                                                                SLOANE MADDEN
THE ONLY TRUE WISDOM IS IN KNOWING YOU KNOW NOTHING.

Sloane was engaged (more or less) in a conversation with a fan about... finger sandwiches?... when a wisp of silvery hair fluttered by her. A scent lingered in the girl's wake, and if the shining locks hadn't been enough, it was this. Sloane recognized that perfume immediately. Her eyes followed the silhouette into the crowd, then retraced the girl's steps to the table, to a shaken Juno. Something wasn't right.

"Uh, so, what's your favorite food, Sloane?"

Sloane returned her attention to the girl speaking and smiled. "I'm sorry, but would you excuse me for a moment?" Focusing on the fleeting form of the all too familiar young woman, Sloane waded through the crowds. Soon she reached the door, and her heels clicked quietly against the hardwood floors as she escaped from the noisy event to the silence of the hallway. Before the intruder could get away from her, Sloane grabbed her arm and forced her around. "What are you doing here?" she asked, voice low, studying the other with narrowed eyes.

(happy thanksgiving)

Ely knew who it was accosting her before she even turned around to confirm it, that's why she was able to wear a huge grin on her face instead of a glare as she turned to face Sloane who didn't look like the happiest camper in the world. "What am I doing here?" Ely repeated the question grinning in that way she did, all confidence no hesitance. "Well I am a student here, just like every other girl on this campus." Ely said smartly, looking down at her forearm which was tightly held in Sloane's grasp. "And today of all days is a Hostess party, near every student on campus is here, unless..." Ely snatched her arm free. "You are going to tell me, I'm not allowed to come to social gatherings now? Come on Sloane, is that what we are now?" Ely looked Sloane in the eye unimpressed. "Please~"

THE ONLY TRUE WISDOM IS IN KNOWING YOU KNOW NOTHING.

                                                                (You, too, doll.)

As Ely shook off Sloane's grasp, the hostess withdrew her arm. "You can do whatever the hell you want," she said coolly, shrugging her shoulders and taking a step back. "As long as you keep your distance." Ely knew how to get under Sloane's skin. She always had. Sloane's relationship with Ely was complicated in the way Sloane didn't like her relationships to be complicated; they had shared passion, screaming arguments, deep conversations, and perhaps everything else you could think of. But Ely had gotten too close, learned too much, and now Sloane saw her as a threat. Sloane tended to distance herself from people who could see through her, and not always in the healthiest ways. Perhaps never, actually.

"Pft, keep my distance huh?" Ely said shaking her head and putting her hands on her hips. "Last I checked, you were the one that came after me, not the other way around. unless." Ely started, looking Sloane up and down, narrowing her eyes. "You were trying to keep me away from someone else?" Ely said all too knowingly. "What? Afraid that one of your little fan girls will learn too much about you if I'm around them? Honestly I think I'd be doing them a favor if I told them how toxic you really were once they slice by that fake a** smile you always wear." Ely said clicking her tongue. "But don't worry, I wouldn't rat on you like that, I have class after all."

Sloane tensed as Ely confirmed her suspicions. So, Ely had talked to Juno. What words were exchanged, Sloane could only guess. From the way Juno had looked, shaken and stunned, it seemed they hadn't been friendly. "Don't be bitter, Ely," Sloane said, folding her arms across her chest and taking a casual step closer to the girl. "It doesn't suit you." Closing the space between herself and Ely, Sloane reached out and grabbed Ely's chin, forcing the girl closer so she could hear every word Sloane was about to say. "Stay away from her, or I'll have no choice but to keep you away myself," she said sharply, voice low. "Do you understand?"

"Oh my, you know, I used to think it was all hot and intense when you got serious like this. But now, not so much." Ely said not showing the slightest sign of fear when Sloane got physical. "Go ahead, hit me, I want you to. Show me just how much you'll do. If I get close to her, because I promise you. If it doesn't come back on to you, I'll be coming back down on Juno tenfold. I can take a beating, and I know you can as well. But what about your friend?" Ely asked tauntingly.

"How many punches until that pretty tan face of hers goes from brown, to blue, and then to black? I wonder if she bruises like a banana." Ely mused as if she were talking about the weather so casual. "I suppose you let me go, and allow me to continue on my marry way~"

Ely didn't even flinch. Sloane suddenly found herself with more disadvantages than advantages, and once again she was reminded of why she kept people from getting too close. Ely had been the exception; there had been a time, how ever brief, when Sloane had thought that maybe, just maybe, it would be alright.

Juno had fled the party, in as orderly a fashion she could manage, she had poured the punch that the mystery woman had given her out in a trash can as she walked down the halls, she wasn't heading back to her room, she had a real irrational fear of being alone right now. The halls were good for her, there were students who were lining the walls chatting about the party, in an environment that was much less crowded and much more quiet, Juno was glad they were there, she didn't know them, and they almost certainly didn't know her, but she was extending silent thanks for all of them.

The bath room was her destination, she could lock herself in a stall, and hide away for hours, until the party was over, until she had the courage to sneak into her room, and curl up for the night. One thing was for sure, she was never going to take a chance again, she didn't need this, she didn't deserve this. She just wanted to draw, she was happy doing that, she swore she was. No one had ever threatened to hurt her for being an artist after all. So yea, she could forget about the hostess club, she could forget about Sloane. She could tuck her tail between her legs, and pray that she never met that woman again.

She wondered if she would be needing to have lunch money prepared to give up tomorrow, this whole being bullied thing was really new to her....

THE ONLY TRUE WISDOM IS IN KNOWING YOU KNOW NOTHING.

Juno was gone. Sloane searched the entire ballroom, but the girl was nowhere in sight. When Sloane asked around, she was given vague answers; luckily, most of the guests could recall a young woman without a mask, but there wasn't much to say about her after that. She may or may not have gone this way, she may or may not have gone that way. Finally, Sloane left the party again, either to find Juno or relieve the stress Ely had inflicted, and, finally, she saw Juno. Sort of. Maybe. Juno was walking away, her back to Sloane, but she was too tall to be anyone else at the school.

Sloane took a detour and managed to be at Juno's side quickly, just a few feet from the restrooms. She fell into step beside the girl, hands in her pockets. "You weren't going to say goodbye?" she asked. It sounded like a joke, but it wasn't. She just wanted to make sure Juno was okay.

Juno knew who it was besides her before the girl even spoke up, only one person would be able to approach her so casually, well in truth only two people would approach her so causally, but Juno felt that the other of the two would have tried to bash her head in before she tried talking. Juno turned to Sloane who still had a bit of humor left in her it seemed, Juno was glad, it was truly more than she could say for herself at the moment. "I wasn't leaving." Juno lied, placing a hand over her lower stomach and grimacing a bit. "I just drank a bit too much punch it seems and I was on my way to the restroom. That's all." Juno assured, it made her feel guilty. Lying to Sloane like this, the girl had been so genuine with her, in this moment Juno felt like the hugest piece of trash.

Sloane knew immediately that Juno was lying, but didn't call her out on it. Instead, the hostess nodded and hummed sympathetically. "Happens to the best of us."

A few steps closer to the restroom, and Sloane gently reached for Juno's arm, silently asking her, but not forcing her, to stop. "Juno, I don't know what Ely said to you in the club room," she said, her voice low, calm. She didn't appear unsure of herself, per se, but something had changed. She was handing all of the power in this moment over to Juno. "But I want you to know that if you chose not to see me again, I wouldn't think any less of you for it."

Juno's dimmed a bit at the mention of the girls name, she hadn't been formally introduced, but she had a feeling that the girl was indeed whom Sloane was talking about. Juno looked down a bit, slightly ashamed now, knowing that Sloane knew her to be the coward she truly was, and that there was a chance that Ely's words had really been enough to possible run Juno away from her. "I still want to be your friend." Juno said softly. "I don't want to stop seeing you." She added stressing her point.

"But I also don't want trouble."

Juno didn't want trouble. Sloane internally cursed Ely for forcing Juno into such a state of fear. "Of course," she said softly, nodding and letting go of the taller girl's arm. Sloane didn't want to lie and say she wasn't trouble. She didn't like being dishonest, and being dishonest to Juno, especially about something like this, was twice as unnerving. "I'm sorry that Ely made you feel uneasy. I will do all that I can to ensure she doesn't bother you again. However... I am dangerous. Getting to know me doesn't come without its risks."

"You're dangerous?" Juno asked Sloane turning to face her, looking down into her eyes. "Are you a danger to me? Or is it that there are more people like Ely who will be poking there heads up?" Juno wasn't normally confrontational, never confrontational at all really, but she was unnerved and really just shaken up big time, she began to babble. "I've been safe my whole life. E-every risk was calculated, I entered art competitions because I knew I would win 9 times out of 10, b-but sometimes when I knew an artist who may be entering I would not enter, not because I was afraid they would beat me, but because I knew that they might be hurt when I won. But even still, including these steps I take to spare feelings, I have no close friends, friendships take risk, big risk, you can not show who you truly are without taking a risk, because being yourself is a risk, and I've always been too afraid to take that risk. With you I really, really want to try. I want to be your friend, I want you to like me, I want you to feel the same way about me that I feel about you, I want you to understand what my drawings and paintings of you really mean. But I don't want to get burned." Juno took a deep gulping breath.

"This is so scary, my heart is beating like crazy, and I can't stop my body from shaking." Juno whispered hugging herself. "But I still don't want to run away, but you have to promise!" Juno announced, vehemently. "Promise you won't hurt me."

                                                                SLOANE MADDEN
THE ONLY TRUE WISDOM IS IN KNOWING YOU KNOW NOTHING.

Sloane was surprised--not by how upset Juno was, but by how she was handling it. For the first time, perhaps, she seemed sure of herself; she knew what she wanted to say, and she was saying it. Sloane listened to every word patiently, silently, the features of her face drawn into something contemplative, just inches from a frown. Then came the demand: promise. Promise Sloane wouldn't hurt her.

That's not a promise you can make, the voice in her head warned her. She had never made that promise before. No one had ever asked it of her, and even if someone had, she didn't like making promises she couldn't keep. And yet...

                                                                "I promise."

Sloane suddenly felt uneasy. Why would you do that? Sloane, though she could handle a crowd with finesse and speak elegantly and eloquently with even the most powerful of people, distanced herself from others. Many she encountered knew this, often instinctually; she was transparent about her intentions, and they didn't expect much from her by way of closeness. So no one had ever asked her to promise such a thing. No one thought they could get close enough to be hurt.

Except, maybe, ********. Ely. Juno would find out what Sloane was, like Ely, and she would hate her for it.

Sloane took Juno's hand. "I promise," she repeated, "that I won't hurt you."
