[ Jack : Steel Town >>> Steel Meals ]

Recovering himself as best he could, considering the fact he had just been manhandled to the extreme by a complete stranger not more then fifteen minutes after entering the town. Jack, breathed a sigh of relief. Taking a moment to brush himself off he voiced his word of thanks shakily, while stumbling to keep up. “Thanks... I.. I honestly didn't think I'd be the damsel in that scene but, to each his own. I owe you one.”

Following the young PAAC member across yet another street. The duo stepped into a small restaurant. Abruptly titled “Steel Meals” the place served anything but. With its many booths and stools positioned neatly around the establishment for ease of access to every customer. Steel Meals gave that classical vibe which many customers seemed to enjoy. However, most of the current flock, didn't blend will with the theme.

From mean to rough, from coarse to rude. A large manner of tough guys littered the area. covered in gear ranging from, patch-worked leather to light steel plating and armed with an assortment of blunt and sharp edged weapons. It was clear to Jack that they had just entered, a lion's den. Step by casual step, the mimic calmly followed Sera over to the main counter as each second, the eye of someone or another caught a whiff of the foreign blood walking into their territory.

Sighing as he finally managed to notice the absence of his weapon, the mechanical man realized he had likely dropped it during the incident he was involved in just seconds before. A blunder, that he would just have to accept.

Catching erratic movement from the corner of his eye. A young petite woman with raven black hair dressed in an apron over her street wear, stumbled out from a doorway adjacent to the entrance, a tray full of drinks in her hands.

It was barely noticeable as she made her way passed, but to the trained eye the raven haired waitress seemed lightly afraid. A fear, Jack couldn't blame really, he himself was also on edge and the tension was now so thick that if he had wanted. He could cut it with a knife.

When Sera stepped into Steel Meals, a strange whiff met her nose. It smelled kind of like alcohol, which might explain the act outside just moments ago. But Sera was used to it, sort of. She lightly coughed from the smell, and catching a reply in the meantime.

"Be with you in a sec!" It was Ava, as if Sera coughed to get her attention. Then again, the diner was small enough, you could yell from one end of the room with the waitress at the other and get served. She nervously set the drinks from the tray on the table occupied by three brutish men, and Sera caught one giving a rather malicious grin as Ava left. He was probably chuckling or something, but Sera didn't hear anything. "Whew, boy are we packed tonight!" Ava flung her hair back with her hand as she stood behind a small podium near the entrance. "For two?"

"Yeah." Sera looked around as Ava dug out two menus and prompted them to follow, glancing here and there as she did so. She was afraid of something, and Sera had a hunch she knew what. Their seats were in the top-left corner, a booth that curved around to compensate with a rather small table. The burly thugs were situated on both sides of their booth, making it rather uncomfortable.

"Here you go. Can I get you anything to start?" Ava dug out a small pad of paper and pen, ready to take their order.

"You still got the Grutt's Eye Grail?" Ava nodded, apparently too scared to reply with words. "Alright, I'll take that, and let's see..." Sera flipped through the menu. Roadkill Surprise was the first thing to show up, listed under daily special. On the next page were a variety of soups and salads, such as One Ton Soup, which was a simple tomato and potato soup that could be mixed with a variety of other vegetables and coated with a thin layer of cheese, or Ravera Slaw, a type of coleslaw dish with complementary Ravera tentacles chopped up into it. Of course, the Ravera are a poisonous type of Anemone, so the chefs had to remove that. "I'll take the Ravera Slaw with some Needle Drake Steak."

"Great. And you?" Ava turned to the young man with green hair and red eyes.

[ Jack : Steel Town : Steel Meals ]

Him? That question was startling. He was a machine. He didn't eat. But if he didn't order something, he would arouse a small bit of suspicion, mainly from Sera. Jack looked at his options. If he ate, chances were he could suffer a major amount of internal damage. If he avoided it though, Sera's interest in him would shoot up and that was also bad. The young raven haired waitress, glanced to him with a look of haste. It was obvious she wanted to avoid being around the other customers as much as possible and Jack, right now was a bane to that desire.

“Sir? Your order.” The tone of her voice suggested she getting impatient. Besides being nervous, Jack could only guess what she thought of him as a customer. He sighed, realizing he wasn't giving off the best impression, even now, Sera seemed to ponder what he was thinking about.

“Um, I-I'll just have a cup of water, thanks.” It wasn't like he would drink it, but in a way the answer settled both Jack's problems. Somewhat. Handing back the menu, the waitress rolled her eyes as she quickly moved on to other orders.

Relaxing in his seat. The mechanical man ignored the waitress's attitude and instead focused on matters concerning him and his real “problem.” The fact was, he had barely any time to himself since meeting Douglas and Sera. Which seemed good. Yet he was still a ticking time bomb abruptly titled “random massacre” just waiting to happen.

Jack had searched through his data stores numerous times for an answer to these attacks. Yet every attempt only ended up empty. Empty, except for a key element that revolved around these sudden changes in his character. A protocol, named Jackknife.

As mysterious as the name for it was. Jack knew he wasn't the one setting it off and after reviewing all the times he had encountered the protocol. The obvious two conclusions left little margin for error. Someone had either planted this into him deliberately. Or, a fatal glitch in his systems managed to corrupt a part of his processor beyond repair.

[ Darwin : Citadel : Council Room ]

The time for gossip was over, it had come and run its course as it always did. For Darwin however, it was never a welcomed endeavour, since the topic surrounding these sessions always seemed to be looked down upon by many of his subordinates, even when lives were at stake. Bringing up a holographic command console, the aged headmaster dimmed the lights, quickly quieting down any left over socializing that seemed to still remain as he brought up a central translucent video feed in the middle of the room. The meeting had begun.

“ladies and gentlemen, I've gathered you all here to discuss a pressing situation that has recently come to my attention.” Tapping a few keys and skimming through a number of images. Darwin activated a recorded video feed that Zachary had uploaded mere moments earlier. Upon it, a number of individuals belonging to the C.E.C. Engaged a mutant threat that the council knew all too well. It was apparent, their forces were getting outmatched, as the enemy displayed odd behaviour. An organized assault.

“This is the situation in Hanover, I am told that Splinterburg has also received the same amount of punishment.”

Hushed words and sounds for concern echoed throughout the room as Darwin continued to observe the footage. Stroking his beard he pondered the scene before him. Someone had to be pulling the strings. But who? And why? Was this an elaborate scheme meant to topple the C.E.C.? The likelihood felt almost too clear.

Turning to the one who brought this to his attention. The headmaster directed everyone to him. “Zachary Hawkins, if you would indulge us on your predicament further.”

Only a glass of water? Was he not hungry? Of course, Sera had recently met her green-haired acquaintance, so she didn't know if he recently ate or not."Only water? Are you not feeling well or something?" Of course, she wasn't so hot herself, but she was starving. She looked around, noticing that almost all of the creeps in the diner had their eyes on the two, and Sera was getting a little uncomfortable. A few licked their lips menacingly, almost acting like they were animals going to eat soon. But the girl didn't think it was the diner's food they were interested in.

Sera leaned close to Jack, moving a hand over her mouth so as to cut her words off from the weirdos. "What do you think their beef is?" she whispered, glancing around again. A few shifted in their seats, but never took their eyes off of them.

---

Zach cleared his throat. "Of course, Headmaster." he then addressed the rest of the Council. "You may all recall the invasion at Veteran's Port just a few months ago. If you do not, it is fine, as we succeeded in driving out the mutants there. However," he put his hands on the edge of his guardrail, which looked nothing more than part of a sphere, lopped off to prevent him from falling over. This was the case with his fellow members as well. some of you may know the habits in which the mutants attack, and I assure you, the attacks have never been this close together before." he was going on a limb at this point in order to drive his point across.

"Blasphemy!" Another member shouted from across Zach's position. He was a middle-aged man who looked of Indian descent. Zach had only ever heard his last name; Nagesh. "The likelihood of mutant attacks is never certain, this could very well be coincidence!" A few other members murmured in agreement.

Zach sighed, Nevertheless, there is not one attack, but two. Though militia was already sent out to Hanover, we must not forget Splinterburg," he looked at Nagesh, though his words were directed at everyone. "As members of the Council, isn't it our duty to help those who cannot help themselves? We should all know that any of our districts could be in danger at any point, suffice to say. And as members, shouldn't we also help one another? I know we are tight on resources, but given the circumstances, would it be too much to ask to show a little courtesy?" Zach thought he handled that pretty well, though showed no sign of it. A small silence fell over the room, allowing Zach's words to sink into everyone's heads. He broke the silence soon after, however, with one last statement. "With that said, would it be too much trouble to ask one of you, any of you," he glanced quickly over at Nicole, though the action was so fast, it was almost hard to spot, to help me save one of my Junctions?" he glanced around the room, seeing no one speak up quite yet. However, he did not let this get to him; he had patience for this.

[ Jack : Steel Town : Steel Meals ]

The tension, had not even come close to fading in its current strength. Strength, that Jack assumed was all in part to their arrival. What was wrong with this place? Didn't the Sheriff care that such dangerous men now sat in a restaurant unmonitored? Where were his deputies? They had to be roaming around trying to keep the peace. Right? These questions seemed to assume to much. The likelihood that these guys had gotten in do to “good behaviour” was there. But one thing you never do in the wastes is assume someone will always follow your rules.

Locking an optic with an ugly, bald headed man who's right eye seemed to be in a permanent squint thanks to heavy scarring, Jack slowly dipped his brow in response to the individual's visible taunt to “try something.” Giving a simple retort of “be my guest.”

The mimic had dealt with thugs and bandits in the past before, so it was no surprise when the idiot's expression changed dramatically while he jerked forward, abruptly kicking his table and spilling his own drink, before relaxing back in his seat. An amused glee clear in his eye. This scene was enough to remind Jack of a caged beast, just waiting for a chance at blood.

Glancing over to Sera, who now seemed confused as to what was going on while she waited for an answer to her questions. Jack directed his full attention back to her, setting his arms on the table in a crossed pile state. “Its really quite simple if you think about it Sera. They, think you'd fetch a fine price on the slave market. While I, on the other hand seem to be just another young punk standing in the way of profit.”

He was right on both accounts. The way each thug eyed his young friend suggested this to the highest notion. It appeared to be the same way for the waitress also. Her nervousness was clear about that. But what was keeping them from just ransacking the place? Springs? No, there had to be more around the town. Perhaps they were waiting for something else. Their boss?

Jack shook his head. Constantly over thinking things seemed to have become a habit, he needed to lighten the mood. “So Sera, what is PAAC exactly. I've heard during my travels, that its a group dedicated to restoring earth and ridding the horrible mutations within the animal population. Like returning bugs to their original size and what not.”

This was just rich... out of all the people in the world with problems. Her mortal enemy was the one asking for help? How pathetic. What, he and all his little “powers” couldn't step up for the job? Hah! Even Ginzou the “great” Silver serpent, as he was dubbed, had control of things in Japan with his pitiful powers. Zach was obviously just looking for a handout. One that Nicole was surprised even the headmaster had considered. Coincidence? More like a ploy to have everyone lessen their strength so the miserable wretch can overthrow the council in a night.

But they would have to deal with that themselves. Her assumptions right now, were just that. Assumptions. If she spoke out of line without proper evidence, her cover would be blow and any trust she had ever gained would crumble faster then the ruins of the world themselves. No, for right now she could only be the observer. Whoever seemed stupid enough to help the little murderer would have to suffer the consequences of destroying the council by themselves.

Show some courtesy? how despicable. Even when the dried blood that had been shed was obvious to Nicole's eyes. This man, this “thing.” Dared? did he hear the pleading cries of his victims. Did he care then? Does he care now? His expression certainly didn't reveal an ounce of this care he was trying to display and she had no doubt everyone here could see that.

[ Darwin : Citadel : Council Room ]

The way Zachary discussed the situation, made it quite noticeable that he had yet to truly grasp political debate. Even one's as medium as this made Darwin fear that the young man would already lose whatever footing he had gained on the matter. Unlike past discussions that held simpler topics involving resource or investigation on a smaller scale. Which Zach excelled at. This, was a more militarize branch. one the young man had barely any experience in.

But, regardless of this, the old headmaster had yet to give his say. Which, was law.

Getting to his feet. All eyes fell upon him, as Darwin voiced his standing. “Zachary's plea is just. As the council, we are sworn to protect the innocent from the harshness of the wastes, no matter the circumstances and regardless of the cost. Will any of you rise to the call?”

Rise to call. These words were his trademark, they were inspiring, awe inducing even. To Darwin, they were the words the people first heard when he had taken the mantle of Headmaster from the founders. When he used these words within discussion. It meant he had become. Serious. Now, time would tell if he had to deliver.

"The-the what?" she whispered back, though heard full well what he said. "The slave market?" Looking around now, she knew just why they kept giving her sneaky looks and odd faces that she could sense a certain satisfaction emerging from underneath, a satisfaction she had all too well an idea of. If that was the case, Ava would also be their target. Fortunately Jack was here, which would certainly aid in their escape should these brutes try anything funny. Sera silently slipped a hand down to her trusty gun, just in case.

"I guess you can include bugs. I'm not too fond of insects, but I try to save what I come across." she looked to Jack, keeping an ever watchful eye on the brutes. "The basic gist of PAAC is, like you said, trying to restore the world to what it once was, through what we call 'Demutagen'. It's simply the process of reversing the mutation from the Terranium stuff, and returning the animals to normal. I'm not sure the exact process about the earth, though. I just rescue animals, so that's all I know about." She never once saw anything that was used on something other than animals, so she wasn't sure if the PAAC handled economic repair or not. Still, if they were conscious about saving animals, trying to rebuild the earth didn't seem far off.

[ Jack : Steel Town : Steel Meals ]

That look of serious concern as well as the way she slowly made for her gun, gave Jack a cause for worry. Right now, everything was at a standstill. Like a room full of flammable gas. All it needed was a spark. A spark, Jack wasn't going to let Sera become. Thinking fast the mimic reached over the table between them and fished her hand away from the firearm, quickly pulling it into a firm hold amongst both his own. Despite the awkward look he would obviously be getting from this action, it was necessary. Even if she was just going to rest a hand on her weapon, that was all the excuse needed for these rough rollers to cause a blood bath. Sure if it was just him this would be fine. But Sera, was a warm blooded human, or a “bullet cushion” to put it more blunt, and it certainly seemed that way for the waitress also. Who, Jack reminded himself, was a bystander and thus didn't need to get involved in a shoot out.

Looking his young friend in the eye, the mechanical man gave a light smile with a few hushed words. “I've heard, some people think it best, not to tease the lion. Don't you agree?”

Shifting his eyes so as to direct Sera's attention to those around her, Jack observed each individual casually slide a hand away from their present armament. It was close, but now was not the time for a fight. These people hadn't even started anything. Yet. So, it was in Sera's best interest to avoid giving them a reason to. “So... how does PAAC make this anti-mutagen? I assume its a long process since most of the wild things out here are still “monstrous beasts” bent on melting the flesh straight off the bone.”

He needed to keep her talking, to change the mood. At least until the food was ready. Then he wouldn't have to worry so much. Glancing down to his hands he realized he had forgotten to let go of her. A thought he abruptly executed releasing her and trying to play it off with a simple chuckle. “Sorry, I-I don't know what came over me. heh heh.”

Looking around the establishment so as to avoid some embarrassment, Jack gazed upon many interesting things. He hadn't really payed much attention to the interior of this structure do to obvious reasons since coming in. But now that he looked. The place was a bit of a marvel. The booth table supports seemed to be comprised, ingeniously, of small mechanical parts that appeared to be welded tightly together. The seats themselves however, looked to be made of old car seats that held many touch ups, mostly contained with thick tape, probably meant to hold back the springs. Beyond this, the ceiling lights were old refurbished headlamps and the few artistic pieces that littered the concrete walls were abstract art made from, once again, Automobiles.

The whole place was quite the spectacle, human ingenuity indeed. But who was the one responsible for such welding expertise?

Ah, how Zach loved to hear those words. Rise to call. It sent a certain sort of satisfaction through him, slightly easing his regrets. Now he just had to see who would follow through. He remembered the first debate he had been in, where he had heard those words. Of course, someone else was needing some help, but sadly, Zach had his hands tied up for that one with some own issues in his district. Nothing major, just a few nutcases claiming to be part of a cult, though never specified which one. They were dealt with, fortunately, and he heard nothing further from them. Then it hit him; maybe those same cultists were behind these attacks. After all, it was unnatural for mutants to be so...coordinated, but he never said anything, and instead, waited for replies from the others.

Nagesh was the first to respond. "My apologies, but I have none to spare." Well that seemed like a bullshit excuse. Zach had not heard anything pop up in the Indian man's district, so he had no real reason to refrain.

Zach never held anything against the man, so that was ruled out. The only one he didn't like was Nicole. Something about her kept irking him. Perhaps it was her robotic entourage? Or was it her hidden motives? Zach didn't know, and he wasn't going to risk using his power to infiltrate her mind just to find some answers, as she might rat on him. After all, he was trying to use his power for good, not personal gain. However, now that he thought about it, all his power ever brought was pain, no matter how light he used it. Maybe it would be best if he didn't use it at all.

Looking around, he saw that, one by one, each of the other members backed out until only Nicole was left. Great.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 07, 2012 6:37 pm

Sera was reluctant when Jack suddenly grabbed her gun, but he did have a point. Sera shook her head lightly to clear her head. She then glanced around the room, ignoring the many faces the brutes gave both of them, until some footsteps caught her ear. Turning to the noise, she saw Ava come out of the kitchen, passing through a couple off odd doors that swung back and forth as soon as she stepped into the rest of the restaurant. Oh good, food's finally here.

"Sorry for the wait." Ava said, almost stumbling and spilling everything, though quickly recovered as she came up to Jack and Sera's table. "One Needle Drake Steak with Ravera Slaw and Grutt's Eye Grail." she put each menu item on the table as she listed them off. Sera licked her lips, rubbing her palms together as she got ready to dig in. "And one glass of water." she took the glass off the tray, along with a napkin, and set them on the table. It looked a little worn, but then again, this wasn't a professional restaurant, though if Sera had to give a rating, it would be four out of five stars. Ava then turned away, but not before giving the green haired boy a notion to look at the napkin she handed with his water. "You folks enjoy."

"Alright, I'm frikkin' starving!" Sera picked up her knife and fork, which were already on the table, before diving right into the steak, cutting a rather large piece off before shoving it in her mouth. She looked to Jack as if to say the meal was good. Then she remembered his question he asked earlier. "I don't know all the details, but I do know that making the Demutagen is very extensive." She took a sip of her drink. "I think, at one point or another, I may have heard the docs who were making the Demutagen in its early stages studied how this Terranium mineral worked, and based the anti-serum off of it, or something. Like I said, I don't know all the details." she then started to cut some more of her steak. "I think the Demutagen was around before I was born, so I think I heard that bit from one of the employees."

[ Nicole : Citadel : Council Room ]

This was turning out better then expected, no, better then she could dream. Zach was getting nowhere in his effort to attain more expendable assets, even with Darwin's backing. Which was an odd response to say the least, especially from the rest of the council. Normally, when the headmaster gave his signature words. None would hold back. But yet this time they seemed to do so without hesitation. Nagesh, was a spineless b*****d, so it was fairly expected of him to back out. But even the Silver Serpent of Japan had reservations. However, he had his hands full with quelling raider attacks in his sector so that was understandable. But the others, beyond what information she held on them, were without problems.

Maybe it was do to his lack of experience, having only really served a few years in the Council since the death of the last member. Or maybe the others merely felt superior do to the fact, it was he who was in need this time and wanted to show him what it meant to be at the bottom of the list. Whatever the cause Nicole was joyful that for once, none cared. She was curious about how it felt, to be without a friend amongst the others. To be a low priority.

The man deserved this. But to her he deserved so much more. Death was too good for someone like him. Misery was all he ever needed. To Nicole, it was all she ever had now. Besides the love of her daughter. Now, she was the only one left to voice her response about the situation. A reply she would relish for days to come and one, Zach appeared to also dread.

Getting up from her seat and clearing her throat diligently. Nicole gave a sadden defeated expression to her enemy. “I also, cannot answer the call this time. A number of situations involving an increase in gang activity around the eastern sector of my quadrant has taken most if not all of my available numbers. I'm sorry Zachary,”

It was done, Now, he had no one.
PostPosted: Sat Dec 08, 2012 1:04 pm

[ Darwin : Citadel : Council Room ]

How disappointing, how disappointing indeed. Would none help? This was troubling, everyone had their own battles to face yes, but surely one could spare some. Looking to each of his subordinates in an annoyed disappointment, Darwin redirected his attention back on Nicole, who was the last to give her say. Maybe with the right encouragement he could get some kind of help out of the widow. Gang activity was a pressing matter yes, but since it was isolated to only a portion of her quadrant, perhaps she could figure out a way. She did have those bodyguards of hers and judging by their individual performances one would practically be more then enough. Their expertise in tactics and weaponry was triple the amount a few footmobiles could accomplish.

“Nicole, could you not at least maybe lend one of your android bodyguards as a temporary replacement? Until one us of has the resources left to send a platoon?” this was a stretch yes, but he was serious now and that meant there was no way around this. Plus she was the only member who seemed to employ robotic bodyguards and that was a whole lot better then what the rest of his subordinates had.

[ Jack : Steel Town : Steel Meals ]

Sera's opinion on the matter involving demutagen was more or less informative. The fact that she knew very little of the process which belonged to her own organization said a lot about how high up a position she held. Still, the answers were not all bad. Out of all of it, Jack did manage to pick up on a new topic. Terranium, what an unusual name for a mineral. Turning his focus to the napkin which sat patiently beside his cup of water upon the table. The mimic questioned what kind of message he had received. His first impression on the waitress earlier hadn't exactly been a memorable one, so the likelihood she was simply telling him off in her own way, felt possible. Glancing over to his young friend who now diligently scarfed down her meal, Jack sighed as he realized his chance to save an image of the food intact had come and gone faster then he'd cared to notice. Yet again, bad luck had followed him.

Picking up and carefully unwrapping the folded fabric wipe, the mechanical man silently skimmed though a small bit of words written rather cleanly upon it. What seemed rather surprising to him before reading the message was the fact that Napkin's still existed in some form or another. This was maybe do in part to the current power being the C.E.C. And their promise to bring back civilized society. But, regardless of the reasons, Jack continued to read.

“I'm sorry for the way I acted earlier, but maybe you can understand the situation I'm in. These people here, these tough guys. They aren't exactly regulars and I know you realize it too. The reason for this message is simple, There have been people in this town turning up missing, ever since these idiots decided to show up unannounced. Now, I wouldn't have come to you stranger if you didn't know miss Thomas, but since you do, it means I can trust you. In short, these goons have to be tied to the disappearances and I think they know I'm on to them. So please, save me. Because I'm not sure I'll survive past tonight.”

The mimic was at an odd impasse. As much as he wished to help the young waitress and as dangerous as these goons appeared to be. No one had yet to do anything wrong besides the idle threat. So unless Jack wanted the fury of Sheriff Springs to crash down on him like a hundred foot tall tidal wave of destruction. No action could be met without action taking place. However he would keep an eye on her until they could get a chance to talk.
