I love scientific ethics classes. ^^

You can take really unpopular stances in your presentation and generate lots of discussion by making everyone really angry.

...does that count as real life trolling? ^^;;;;;

I believe it does. rofl

Oops? ^^;;;;;;;;

So, I really really hate people who have massive entitlement complexes with racial, ethnic and religious slurs.

I'm dealing with this one idiot, a term I don't use lightly, on another website. She believes steadfastly that not saying racial slurs limits her vocabulary so much as to destroy conversation completely.

>.<

Nevermind that racial and ethnic slurs make up a very small segment of the English language

Nevermind that her using them adds to the problems of systemic discrimination.

Oh and you'll love this too, she claimed that G~ and the verb form of G~ that implies stealing or cheating are not slurs for the Rroma people because and I quote, "it isn't used as a slur in my area and you should be tolerant of my culture's use of the word"

>_<

Oh and she thinks it isn't a slur because, "they aren't discriminated against in large parts of the English speaking world"

Sometimes I want to stab people...

Well, I'm still alive.
Headed to a physician later today, after the ballots tho. sweatdrop

As for racial slurs... I do uphold that a person has as much right to make themselves look bigoted or small minded as they want. Just as anyone who finds those slurs offensive has a right to express that. I've taken numerous people to task for using terms I find offensive around me before... not just limited to slurs.

Simply put, their right to be asshats is just as absolute as my right to to treat them as such.

Now, mind you, it is far from polite, and if a forum has rules against such words, then there you have it, by willingly entering an area with restrictive speech, you are agreeing to restrict your speech, or have announced your implicit intention to change the rules of that area.

I'm less irritated by her usage and more irritated by her claims that it isn't bigoted at all.

When ignorance becomes obstinance, it may be time to take off the kid gloves.
Or give up on them as anything other than willfully ignorant, and treat them like the petulant child they are.

My parents are now forbidden from EVER speaking to me about ANYTHING even REMOTELY related to politics EVER again, for as long as any of us lives. Hooray.

Why so?
Because I was sitting in the living room reading a book and my dad woke up, sat down to the laptop, and started telling me about how he and my mother nearly voted McCain, but his conscience wouldn't let him, so he voted for an even more racist third-party McCain clone, and that it'll ruin the country if Obama gets in office because he's a black socialist.

Then he had the gall to ask me why I "seemed" upset at the idea that he would even CONSIDER voting for someone as anti-woman and anti-GLBT when he has three daughters, one of whom is a lesbian.

After I voted, my mother demanded to know who I'd voted for, then started attacking me for voting Obama, telling me he's a black Muslim terrorist and will destroy the country, and he's from Kenya and she's seen his birth certificate saying so, and I'm not allowed to disagree because she's entitled to her opinion.

So they're never allowed to discuss politics with me or around me. Ever. If I don't know they're voting for people who want to make me a second-class citizen and strip me of my rights, then I won't have to feel betrayed.

To make it worse, it's my first presidential election, and I'd already sent in an absentee ballot, which apparently wasn't counted, 'cause my name was on the list at the school as having not voted. I was so excited when I sent my absentee ballot, then to find out it hadn't been counted, and having to go vote as a CHORE, then being attacked for my vote just sucked.

At what point does the word stop referring to the Roma, and start referring to the Iconic Fantasy Literature culture?

I notice no one takes Issue with "Barbarians", even though that's a Slur word (although archaic).

So anyone slightly amused at all the election stuff?

All of my friends on FB, even though we're all mostly Canadian, have their statuses changed to "Watching election, go Obama". xD

Barbarian doesn't refer to any particular people. It classically refers to any non-Greek speaker. More recently, it refers to brutish lifestyles. And people do get offended by it. Cu and I were rather offended when someone called the Celts barbarians and couldn't give a reason when we pointed out he wasn't an ancient Greek, and didn't have to follow their own ethnicism.

Basically: Never. So long as the 'Iconic Fantasy Literature culture' resembles a mockup stringing together of various Roma and other nomadic cultures, it will always be offensive. And even if it is applied to something that isn't a Roma stereotype, I ask why are we using a slur to title this anyway?
