Here's a dumb question.
When someone wants to replace the modem in their dekstop--- that means the board that has the jack for a phone line, right?

Uh.. Network card/modem yeah, I'm pretty sure.
It's been a while since I dug in the back of mine though.
Why would you need to?

So..if this...board gets..lets say..hypothetically fried during a lightning storm..or adversely affected... it would prevent the desktop from being able to connect online right?

I'm very tired again.
I could just rest my head on the keyboard. It'd only be for a moment.

Vahn Fah So..if this...board gets..lets say..hypothetically fried during a lightning storm..or adversely affected... it would prevent the desktop from being able to connect online right? nods* But guessing you are using one given to your by your internet provider, if it fries, just say it stopped working and usually they give you a new one for free

Yeah, it happened to me once. Just pull the sumbitch out and replace it. Some ISPs will give a new one, but mine wouldn't. But you can get 'em at places like Walmart for pretty cheap.

Well it's Erinn's desktop... which I have begun to suspect is a better machine than mine... and I have been meaning to get it back up and running.
It won't connect online, and Erinn said that the modem apparently got fried during a storm.
I didn't see charred remains or whatever...so I'm assuming the thing is indeed busted and was wondering if I could solve everything by just replacing the board.

Should work again after replacing it, unless more than just the modem was fried.

Well the hard drive seems fine.. all the data she had on it is still accessible. It boots normal. CD drives all work.
I can still play Diablo II on it. Watch movies, etc.
So I should be OK to assume that the modem board is the problem, right?

Oh to adventure into the unknown--!
How fortuitous, this night would seem, for those who would tempt Charon's call.
