Henry was in for a long shift today. The hospital was understaffed, though thankfully he had some time to prepare. Unfortunately, finding someone to watch Ethiriel took more time than he liked. His brother wasn't his first choice to ask of this responsibility and the younger Knight had given some guff about the situation but, ultimately, he agreed. Gabe arrived just a few hours before his shift, around 8AM, to ensure they had enough time for the long drive ahead of them and getting Ethiriel situated in the unfamiliar place.

Gabe: -pulls up in his grey blue Escort; takes a second to lean against the steering wheel and rub his face before getting out and heading for the door-

Henry: -had been preparing Ethiriel for the trip for most of the morning despite it only being for the day, wanting to make sure she wouldn't have any problems or be uncomfortable in the situation; hearing Gabe pull up, gently touches her shoulder- "Are you ready?"

Ethiriel: -merely nods her head, reaching up to touch his hand in return and snakes her arm through his-

Henry: "Alright," -pats her shoulder gently and leads her to the door. once outside, adjusts the hat Ethiriel was wearing to protect her from the sun- "Thank you so much, Gabe, it really means a lot that you'd do this for us."

Gabe: -steps halfway when the door opens, pockets his hands and waits for them to meet him- ”Yeah.” -nods towards the car and turns to head back to it, opens the passenger door and stands aside- ”What'd you pack, what do I need to know?” -leans an arm on the top of the open door and stares at Henry-

Henry: -with his perpetual goofy grin, follows- "I packed up some silver for her as well as some cleansing wipes, tissues and a bottle of water. She shouldn't need all of it but, you know, just in case."

Gabe: “Right.” -peeks over the door- ”You buckled, or...?”

Ethiriel: -with Henry's help, ducks into the car until she's 'seated,' folding her arms over her ribbon- -glances over in Gabe's general direction and gently shakes her head no-

Gabe: -grimaces and glances at Henry, then walks around the door to Eth's side- ”Alright.” -pulls the seabelt slack and leans across her while taking care not to touch, and buckles her in with a resounding click- -leans back out and sighs, squinting at his brother to silently ask why he didn't do that- ”Anything else?”

Henry: -offers an apologetic look at Gabe's glance but has already started walking back toward the house; he had already spent a bit too long and would need to hurry if he spent too much more time- "I think that's it. You're really a life saver, Gabe."

Ethiriel: "I thank you," -voice soft, now looking straight ahead rather than toward Gabe; expression neutral-

Gabe: -frowns and nods at Henry, offers a short wave- -drums his fingers on the door when Eth thanks him- ”Sure. Watch your fingers.” -creases his brow at his own unfortunate wording but doesn't correct himself, just waits a moment for her arms to be clear before closing the door and getting in the driver's seat- -is quiet, save for a bit of shuffling while he buckles and gets situated, pushes the ashtray shut after a slight pause- ”It's a long trip,” -adjusts the radio, keeping the volume low- ”tell me if you want to listen to something else.” -starts the car-

Ethiriel: -does as she's told and once again folds her hands above her 'lap,' containing herself in her own little bubble- "I understand, Sir Gabriel. I thank you for your time today." -doesn't make any comments about the music or volume but tenses just a little as the car was started. she's hated them from the beginning-

Gabe: -brows furrow at how she addresses him- ”It's fine.”

With some very soft slow music playing, the car pulled away from the curb and began its two and a half hour drive from Gambino Island, across the ferry, and all the way to Aekea. It was a long, tired, and mostly silent journey, save for Gabe very sparsely asking if Ethiriel wanted a window open or the air conditioning on. They pulled into the library parking lot with about twenty minutes to spare before his shift started.

Gabe: -gets the car parked and turned off before opening his door; pauses, then reaches over to unbuckle Eth without warning before getting out and getting her door- ”Got your bag?”

Ethiriel: -completely silent throughout the trip other than offering short answers for the few questions Gabe would ask along the way- -had it not been for the sound of his shift in weight the buckle would have startled her. she was just glad that it was time to step out of the giant, metallic monstrosity- "Yes." -follows the seat with her hand until she meets the strap of her bag and carefully hoists it over her shoulder-

Gabe: “Okay.” -leans on the door while she gets ready, glances out at the parking lot, then looks back when he realizes she hasn't moved- ”Here.” -leans down and offers his arm, just brushing her knuckles with his sleeve so she knows it's here-

Ethiriel: -was actually preparing to start moving but with her crown it was actually for the best that Gabe helped her out- -takes his arm and bows her head as she's pulled out- "Thank you..." -keeps her arm looped around his so that he may lead-

Gabe: -takes a few steps away from the door before locking and closing it, just offering an acknowledging murmur; keeps a leisurely pace with his other hand in his pocket, the arm Eth's on held a bit stiffly- -opens the doors and leads her inside, grimacing at his coworker behind the front desk that looks surprised by his floating companion-

Coworker: -rests his arms on the desk and leans over when they approach- ”Look at you.”

Gabe: “Shut up. Come get me when you're off, I'm grabbing some things.”

Coworker: -laughs and shrugs- ”Yeah, yeah. Sorry you have to deal with him, miss.”

Gabe: -takes his free hand out of his pocket briefly to flip his coworker the bird, which just makes them laugh; starts leading Ethiriel into the library proper, which is very quiet aside from shuffling papers, footsteps, hushed voices, and clacking keyboards- ”I'm up front, so when my shift starts you won't have to move around.”

Ethiriel: -notices how stiff Gabe's arm was but does not mention it, clinging out of necessity- -offers his coworker a tip of her head in respect and acknowledgment. a bit surprised by the apology but doesn't draw any attention to it as she's already led further away- "I understand. I will do my best to keep out of your way."

Gabe: -slows slightly in his step but continues without stopping fully, just offering a quiet sound of exasperation- ”I'm getting something so you won't be bored to death.” -turns down a few aisles until they get to the audio section-

Ethiriel: -continues to float along with him, catching no glimpses of silver anywhere in the area so is content to just stare straight ahead- "You need not worry about me..." -feels kinda bad that he's going out of his way for her-

Gabe: -scoffs while looking through the aisle, occasionally plucking a CD case from the rack- ”You'll be hating life if you just sit here with nothing to do.” -looks over what he's collected once he has four, then starts leading her toward the supply room-

Ethiriel: -listens carefully to the noise each case made, not sure of what he was doing for her sake but she didn't argue further-

Gabe: -opens up the supply room and digs through more of the shelves, grabbing a CD player and a pair of headphones; hesitates at that, glances at Ethiriel's ears, then searches for ear buds instead- -it takes a few minutes of prolonged silence between them for him to find something workable, cradling the procured items in one arm and leading Eth with the other back out of the room, closing the door with his clumsily with his elbow, and makes their way back to the front-

Coworker: -finishes helping a customer when Gabe sets the items down on the counter- ”Oh, you're checking out?”

Gabe: “Stop being an idiot for two seconds.” -lifts the latch and gets behind the counter with Ethiriel, gathers the items back off the counter, and moves them to an empty far corner out of the way- ”Here, where's your silver thing?”

Ethiriel: -waits quietly and patiently as Gabe searches, listening to each little noise his digging made- -once behind the counter, floats beside Gabe until he spoke up. Hands him the satchel from around her shoulder while waiting for instructions. She didn't want to be a bother or obstruct his work-

Gabe: -pauses when he gets handed the whole bag, stares between it and Eth, then mutters his thanks and looks through it in search of the most solid piece of silver; a little trinket he'd seen before seated on the coffee table- ”I'm putting this here,” -holds it up so she can see it clearly, then slowly sets it on the counter- ”It'll be right next to me.” -closes the bag and hesitates, carefully handing it back to her; gathers up the headphones and CD player and holds them out tentatively- ”Have you used headphones before?” -tilts his head a little while examining her ears-- hopefully these would fit more comfortably than full ear sets-

Ethiriel: -watches closely once the silver is brought out and placed down, her eyes not leaving it even after he starts talking again. takes the bag and hovers lower to the ground even without instruction- "No, I have not." -finally glances away from the silver to attempt a look at Gabe, settling for his general direction-

Gabe: -exhales quietly through his nose; mutters something under his breath like 'shouldn't be surprised'- ”Alright, I've got some here. They'll let you listen to something so you don't want to claw your face off from boredom. Got a couple different books on tape, it's-- like being read to.” -shrugs and holds up one of the buds to her ear, hesitates a little before gently helping it in- ”Tell me if it's uncomfortable. I'll leave one ear open in case I need to get your attention.”

Ethiriel: -hears his muttering but keeps quiet, keeping her eyes ahead as he helped her put them in- "I suppose one would not want that. Thank you, Sir Gabriel." -lifts her hand to meet the earbud planted carefully in her ear before folding them both in her 'lap'- "They are just fine."

Gabe: -scoffs quietly, managing a smirk at her initial retort, then grimaces at 'Sir Gabriel'- ”Right. Okay.” -picks out one of the CDs and gets the walkman situated; turns the volume as low as it'll go at first and pauses it right as it starts- ”Mm...” -looks between the walkman and Ethiriel's hands- ”Here.” -winces and carefully slips one side of the walkman against her palm- ”There's different controls for how loud it is, if you want to pause it, start it over. They're fairly, uh, textured. The buttons. Shouldn't be too hard for you to work it...” -frowns, one hand still on the CD player so they're both holding it- ”Do you want me to help you find them?”

Ethiriel: "If you would, please." -lowers her voice, almost sounding disappointed but she wouldn't know what they meant without his help as it was- -doesn't flinch as the walkman's plastic slid across her palm, instead bringing her other hand to examine what she could of it that wasn't taken by Gabe's hand-

Gabe: “Okay.” -doesn't take her hand immediately, first glances over his shoulder to his coworker who is occupied organizing a few things before his shift begins; opts to manipulate Eth's index finger rather than her entire hand, seeming to touch as little of her as possible- ”Volume's on the side, here.” -helps her slide the dial, first all the way up- ”Maximum. Minimum. Try starting around here.” -moves along to the control buttons, stopping at each one- ”Press this if you want to hear something again. This if you want to skip something. This one pauses where you are and continues when you press it again. This opens the case, just let me handle that one. Press this if you want to stop, it'll turn it off.” -releases her finger and hesitantly lets go of the walkman so she can hold it on her own- ”Got it? If you want to start it, just hit the--” -grimaces and guides her finger to the play button again- ”--this one. It's paused right now.”

Ethiriel: -pays close attention to the way each thing felt, the textures all similar yet different enough for her to differentiate with some practice. once the weight shifted and it was all in her hands, she lowered them to about the curl of her ribbon and held it there- "Thank you." -feels the buttons carefully before he led her to the play button, gingerly pressing it so that it would play-

A short introduction played in her ear, announcing the identity of the narrator, the author, and title of the story. Douglas Adams' The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy was read and, once Gabe was sure the actual story began, he nodded and moved away to convene with his coworker. For the next hour and a half, Gabe was quiet and kept busy by arranging books behind the desk. He checked on Ethiriel with an occasional glance, otherwise dealing with folks checking out relatively few books or movies. Here and there she might hear hushed voices, his own and those of strangers, flipping pages, and typing.

The next pair of customers was a mother and small daughter stepping up to the counter. While Gabe was checking them out, the young girl was leaning against the counter and making idle noises with her mouth, sliding her hand across the counter top and walking back and forth until her fingers bumped against Ethiriel's silver knick-knack.

Girl: -stops at the silver and holds it against the counter with both hands; glances at her mother and Gabe, then resumes her pacing while making a motor sound with her lips and sliding the knick-knack along like a toy-

Ethiriel: -completely silent and payed close attention to the CD, somewhat enthralled by the contraption and the story it told. it was humorous, something she didn't normally partake in, but it was enjoyable in most ways and it kept her from her own thoughts so she was grateful- -the sound of the tapping against the counter caused her to open her eyes, immediately caught by the bouncing silver trinket on the counter- "Sir Gabriel..." -watches for a moment longer, eyes attempting to drift away- "Is that your doing?"

Gabe: -doesn't look up from scanning the books even when Ethiriel addresses him but leans his head in her direction- ”Is what?” -glances from his peripheral, only to double take and drop the book he was holding on the counter- ”Hey--” -puts his hand on top of it to keep the kid from moving it, pressing it against the counter- ”Don't touch that.”

Girl: -immediately takes her hand off it when Gabe grabs it and stares with a big frown; sticks her tongue out at him-

Mother: -frowns at Gabe at first, then Ethiriel, but softens when she sees what's going on- ”Are you touching things that don't belong to you?” -her daughter puts her hands behind her back and shakes her head; she sighs and walks over, taking her hand and pulling her back to the front of the counter- ”Sorry. I hope she didn't hurt it.”

Gabe: -was braced for a s**t storm but eases up and moves back to his spot- ”She didn't, it's just--” -gives Eth a sidelong glance, then resumes scanning- ”--important.”

Ethiriel: -doesn't remove her eyes from the trinket the entire conversation, though her confused expression softened and she merely watched as Gabe's hand covered part of it- -lets out a shallow breath as she pauses the walkman to listen a bit better- -feels a little guilty for interrupting the girl's playing but it certainly wasn't an item to be toyed with-

Gabe: -finishes up with them and ends the exchange with a brief lift of his hand, the closest he was willing to get to a wave at that moment- -once they were out the door, glances back to Eth and leans against the counter- ”Usually customers get shitty if you tell their kids not to do something.” -looks back at the door, then out to the rest of the library- ”Could've gone worse.”

Ethiriel: -glances back in Gabe's direction as he finishes, still having the walkman on pause- "That is unfortunate. One should be thankful for assistance when something is out of place." -takes another glance at the silver without turning her head, then back to Gabe- "Thank you for stopping that child, I am sure Henry would not have been pleased had it broke."

Gabe: -scoffs quietly- ”Just Henry?”

Ethiriel: -stares for another moment before bringing her attention back to the walkman, still leaving it off- "...it... it helps me, but it is not mine to keep. -honestly sees all of their silver trinkets, even her food, as Henry's due to him being the one to have purchased it-

Gabe: -creases his brow and stares forward- ”It wouldn't bother you if it broke?”

Ethiriel: -lets out a silent exhale, brows knitting- "...I suppose it would. Sir Knight has plenty to keep my vision, but I suppose I would be upset on his behalf."

Gabe: “Mm.” -scratches his chin and goes quiet for a moment- ”Is that book any good or do you want something else?”

Ethiriel: -idly rubs her fingers over the buttons, about to press play when Gabe speaks up- "Oh... this is fine. Thank you for choosing it." -finger rests on the play button- "It is quite humorous."

Gabe: -smooths down the back of his hair and crosses his arms against the counter edge- ”Sure. Read it a lot as a kid.” -quiets, noticing where her fingers are on the walkman-

Ethiriel: -pauses for a moment, turning her gaze downward before growing a gentle smile and pressing play again-

The rest of the shift was about as quiet as before the child's interference. Ethiriel's audiobook got quite a ways in before it was time to go. With no other incidents, the tension lessened the longer it drew on; still present but muted as they grew more tolerant of the other's quiet presence. Once her trinket and all of the peripherals he retrieved for her were packed away, it was time to go.

Ethiriel enjoyed what little time she had with the walkman, and of course, Gabe's silent company -- it was nice to have a quiet partner, especially when your guardian was as rowdy as Henry was. It wasn't always a bad thing, but it was definitely a nice change.

Henry's shifts were a few hours longer than his brother's which meant the house was empty by the time they returned. Even so, Ethiriel was brought inside thanks to the spare key under a chair cushion out back.

Escorted to her room, the tea Frei was thankful for how relaxing the day had been. She did not quite long for Gabe's constant company, but she wouldn't have minded spending more time with him like this in the future.

Gabe's number had already been dialed in and Henry listened patiently to the tone on the other end. It took longer than he would have liked but surely the boy was busy with something. His smile grew as he heard the click of the phone being answered.

”Heeeyyy, Gabe! How're you doin' today, bro?”

”Hey. Huh? Uh—fine. What's up?”

With a grin, Henry's hand met the back of his head, ruffling his hair. ”That's good to hear! Just wanted to chat for a bit!” he exclaimed.

”Okay.”

”Do you have any plans for your birthday yet?”

Distracted, Gabe offered a slight pause. ”I don't think I'm doing anything this year.”

”Ah, I see. How would you like to do something together? I'm sure Ethiriel would enjoy a small get-together, too!”

Giving out an agitated breath, Gabe continued, ”I don't think I want to do anything this year.”

”Aw, are you sure? It wouldn't have to be anything big! I can just make you dinner and we can chill!”

”You know if it's a 'small thing' mom's gonna want to get into it too and then it won't be small anymore.”

With a laugh, Henry retorted, ”Who said anything about telling mom? I said small; we all know she likes to make productions...”

”She'll ask. I'm not really in the mood for birthday stuff.”

”Not even if I make your favorite?”

There was a short pause, but soon Gabe spoke up again. ”Are you bribing me with spaghetti?” he asked, his voice as flat as possible.

In his most serious tone, Henry replied, ”...Quite possibly.”

Sighing irritably, Gabe said, ”I don't have time for birthday s**t right now, Henry.”

”I'm sorry, did I call at a bad time?”

Gabe scoffed. ”Yeah,” he muttered, ”I need to concentrate on these apps.”

Henry gave pause, staring at one of the rims of his wheels. ”...Apps? Like... applications? What happened?”

”What always happens.”

”...Is everything okay?” he fretted, switching ears, ”Do you have enough for rent?”

With an irritated laugh, Gabe answered, ”That's why I'm trying to concentrate.”

”You'll let me know if you need help, right?”

Gabe paused.

”Can we talk about this later?”

Henry sighed and lightly kicked his wheel before turning and leaning against the car ”Yeah, sure. Ring me up when you've got a free minute.”

”Right.”

And then Gabe hung up. Henry stared off into the sky for a moment before glancing back down at his phone.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 09, 2014 12:37 am

While it was under strange circumstances, Henry was glad to accept Gabe back into his home. There was plenty of room, plenty of food and an extra hand with Ethirel when the moment would arise. There was no ill-will or malcontent in his coming home, and the nurse welcomed him with open arms.

Despite Henry's positive assurances and insistence, Gabe certainly did not agree without argument. Quite a bit, in fact. The older brother was straight to the point after their phone call on the beach. Gabe hadn't called him back like he agreed, forcing Henry to take initiative. None of the apps were getting responses, his rent was already past due, and Gabe was holding on to what he had for food and gas. Gabe rebuffed the offer immediately. Henry tried to assuage his brother's refusal for several days, even citing that it would be helpful to him and Ethiriel to have an extra set of hands around. In the end, the only thing that got Gabe to agree was the threat of having to move back in with their parent's.

Of course, the house had already been cleaned in preparation, something Henry always did for guests who were to stay for more than a few hours, but this guest was to be a semi-permanent fixture in the Knight household. "You're always welcome," Henry would say, holding his arms out in an offered hug, though his brother never took it. "My house is always open."

Upon hearing the news of Gabe's "return," the tea Frei merely nodded her head and agreed to the change. If he was like he was at work while at home, honestly it didn't seem like it would be much of a difference. He was quiet, reserved and as far as Ethiriel knew -- a hard worker. Perhaps they would enjoy each other's company at times, if Gabe so allowed, and she wouldn't have minded in the slightest. He was rough around the edges but as much as she knew him, he was a decent person.

Ethiriel had been dressed by Henry today, wearing a baby blue sundress in preparation. It wasn't the most special of occasions but for the nurse, he was welcoming back a family member. The Frei wasn't particularly swayed one way or another, but she did look forward to Gabe's calm composure.

When he pulled up to the beach-side house in his dull blue Escort it was obvious from a glance that the interior was packed. Boxes were stacked all across the back seat, in the rear, and on the passenger seat. It was a wonder he afforded himself enough room not to cause a visual hazard. Gabe Knight wasn't one to be sunny eyed and smiling even on a good day, not like his brother, but the expression he wore when he got out and started unloading was just the opposite.

"Glad you made it okay!" called the nurse, his ever present smile wide on his face. Even with his brother's sourpuss expression, Henry was as cheerful as always.

Ethiriel remained on the porch and out of the harsh sunlight, staring forward without a focal point as her guardian rushed to meet his brother and help him with his cargo. Despite the heat, it was a nice day and she was glad to be outside, even if for a little while, but she wished she could have been more help to the two humans. Instead, she could only offer a bow at Gabe's approach.

"Greetings, Sir Gabriel," she said, lifting her head at the sound of feet on the wooden porch.

Henry, first to make it up the steps, gave Ethiriel a toothy smile as he walked past and opened the door, propping it open with his foot for Gabe. Moving everything would take several trips but the man didn't mind in the slightest.

As he popped the trunk, Gabe coughed into his sleeve. ”Yeah,” was the only reply he gave both of them, followed immediately by a gravely clearing of his throat.

He pulled one of the boxes closer to the edge of the trunk, wrapped his arms around it, and used his thigh as a ramp to prop it higher against himself before starting towards the front porch. Gabe walked past Ethiriel and his brother without a word. The box was quickly deposited in the nearest free area and he was back at the car. Before grabbing another, he stared at the collection piled inside tiredly.

Henry had noticed how listless Gabe was, at least more than usual, but paid no mind. It was a tough time in his brother's life and he was fully aware; it was practically a personal defeat. Just like with Ethiriel, he knew he was going to have to give the man his own time and space, and he knew there was no telling how long it would last. The nurse had already planned dinner, Gabe's favorite, and would start as soon as they had finished removing as many boxes from the car as possible. If sooner, during unpacking.

Useless at this point, Ethiriel hovered to one side of the porch, toward the swinging bench, and 'sat' out of the boys' way as they did their work. She folded her hands into her lap and enjoyed the indirect sunlight, feeding herself.

Just as soon as Gabe had started for another box, so had Henry. It was just his car packed, meaning that there wouldn't be too terribly much to move, so it would take little time at all.

”Dad's getting the furniture,” Gabe mentioned once he closed the trunk and moved on to the back seat. That explained the lack of a hauling van. ”Keeping it at their place.”

Boxes of books, electronics, and other paraphernalia were stacked somewhat haphazardly, all labeled with sharpie in a dragging scrawl. It was apparent a few things were jostled during the drive but Gabe didn't seem anymore bothered by that than the rest of the situation. They were stacked and carried all the same.

He coughed again. ”Mom's flipping out.”

In passing, Henry paused for a brief moment. Gabe... smelled like smoke. Not that this was new; more often than not, when they would visit, the nurse could smell it on him like an extra layer. Disappointed, he opted not to say anything and instead, help with the last of the boxes.

"I figured," he said, bringing back his famous smile. "There should be plenty of room for all of your stuff, the rooms here are pretty big."

Gabe scoffed as he set the most recent boxes atop another assortment. ”Aren't they, though,” he muttered, running a hand over his face before returning to the car.

The younger brother sat a hand on the open door, leaning in to peer at what was left. Over halfway done and he was losing momentum. Gabe exhaled and brought his forehead to rest against the roof. Only when Henry got closer did he push himself to grab for another box.

Unloading took about fifteen minutes between the two of them, a much shorter time than the hours of box packing and vehicle loading, not to mention the drive itself from Aekea to Gambino. Henry had offered Gabe a rest several times throughout the unloading process, but the man was too stubborn to take it. When the three were back inside and the front door was closed, Gabe immediately retreated to one of the sofas to lay across it.

Ethiriel was led to the opposite couch from Gabe, her eyes immediately locking onto the silver bobbles that were ever present on the coffee table. She was grateful for their presence, but at the same time she couldn't help but resent them. Sighing, she relaxed as much as she would allow herself, her hands folded neatly in her lap, her ribbon resting on the seat.

Already having made his way to the kitchen, had started banging for pots and pans in search for the right set for dinner. "I'll have something special ready for you soon, Gabe!"

Sighing, Ethiriel closed her eyes. Staring at the silver for so long was leaving her restless, but there was little she could do. She couldn't notice Gabe's less than excitable attitude, at least if it was any different than usual, but she hoped her presence would be a little bit calming for him, now that she knew a little more of her natural ability.

The noise of the pans caused Gabe to grimace. He pulled one of his arms up to cover his eyes and let out a tense breath.

”I'm not hungry...” he muttered sharply, clearly not intending for Henry to hear. Whether he meant Ethiriel to or not was hard to say.

Slowly reopening her eyes, Ethiriel glanced ahead toward the sound of Gabe's voice. Her lips pulled into a light frown, brows knit slightly at the abrupt announcement. She couldn't blame him, he sounded exhausted, but food was necessary. Especially for humans who couldn't idly feed like she could. "He is merely trying to be of help, Sir Gabriel," she said, her voice calm and gentle.

As soon as Ethiriel spoke, Gabe's mouth pulled into a tighter frown. He lifted his arm just enough to see her, tell where her eyes were looking, and followed them to the assortment of silver on the table. For a brief second, his hand balled up.

Gabe shifted, turning against the couch so his back was to her and he could more easily block out the light.

”Food can't fix this s**t.”

"I am aware," she said, slowly wringing her hands. "I am sorry about the weight of your situation, and I understand more than you realize."

The frown remained on the Frei's features, eyes drifting just below the silver. She was in no place to lecture him and already regretted speaking, but she didn't like the idea of him being so down. Ethiriel wasn't sure why but she couldn't stand how heavy the air in the room felt. Palpable, the tension was putting her on edge. Perhaps it was that she could relate that everything felt so wrong, but that was something she wasn't to put into words. Not now.

"Perhaps, if you are so against it, you should let him know before it becomes an issue."

”It's fine.”

It sounded just the opposite.

With that, Ethiriel made no more attempts to continue conversation. His short and biting answers dug at her, even if they weren't necessarily directed at her. Letting out a deep breath, the Frei closed her eyes once more and listened to the sound of Gabe's shallow breathing from across the table.

It wasn't long before dinner was ready as spaghetti was one of the easiest meals to ever prepare. The table was set immediately and Henry called out for his two companions to join him. For Ethiriel, he sat a silver bell at the corner so that she could find her way.

The Raeven sat at the end seat, nearest the bell, before returning her hands to her lap. She didn't utter a single word, but merely sat and watched the silver offered to her. Much like Gabe, her appetite wasn't in high gear -- especially after the "conversation" she had with Henry's pouty brother. Would he always be like this?

Gabe was slow to make himself present. No response was initially given to the call for dinner, then when Henry called again his brother instead disappeared into the bathroom for a few minutes. The plates were set up for the brothers across from one another while Ethiriel was seated with her bell at the head. Between them, just to the side enough so their views wouldn't be blocked, was the spaghetti and sauce ready to be distributed between their plates.

By the time Gabe returned, Henry was pulling noodles from it for himself. The younger brother loomed in the doorway for a moment to stare at his appointed seat. With a defeated sigh, he took it.

”Had a hankering for spaghetti?” he asked flatly without looking at Henry or Ethiriel and making no motion to get any for himself.

Henry paused in pouring the sauce over his pasta to look up, a sympathetic smile forming on his face. "I figured you'd like some..." he said, his voice trailing just the slightest. "Come on, it's your favorite." Once finished with the ladle, the nurse carefully dipped it back into the pan and rotated it so that Gabe could reach. He then grabbed the bottle of parmesan and dusted it carefully over his spaghetti.

Much like Gabe, Ethiriel had yet to touch her own meal; a mug of hot water and a few tarnished pieces of silverware. It wasn't uncommon for her to eat so slowly, more so lately, but she felt the same lack of hunger as her guardian's sibling.

This was, as usual, met with a saddened glance from Henry.

Gabe watched the ladle swing against the pot edge toward him with a look of stark indifference. His brow creased after a moment and he looked up in time to see Henry regarding Ethiriel, who was as quiet as ever. He scowled at the table, though Gabe forced it back to a more neutral expression when he took his portion of the noodles and sauce.

”I'll unpack tomorrow,” Gabe sighed. The biting edge of his voice was muted.

Ethiriel's eyes flicked upwards, though no sound escaped her still lips.

On the other hand, this encouraged Henry; his smile became more natural and vibrant before he gave a quick nod. Taking a bite off of his fork and set it down to wipe away any sauce on his face. "I can help you with that, if you'd like. I'm on call tomorrow but otherwise I'm free!"

Gabe gave Henry a short shrug while twirling his fork. ”if you want.” He hadn't put much on his plate, enough to cover half of it. ”I'm not taking out everything. Just the stuff I need.”

"Come on!" Henry exclaimed, though his voice did not rise. He picked his fork back up for another mouthful, followed by another go at his napkin. "You're welcome to stay as long as you want! As long as you need! We can negotiate this if you think it's a problem!"

Gabe looked at his plate instead of his brother as soon as he switched tones. His hand , and the fork it held, fell limply against the side of the plate. His voice lowered, ”Of course it's a problem.”

Hesitantly, Ethiriel searched for the mug before her so that she may dip her thumbs, eyes forward as the brothers spoke. Problem? Like... a burden. She sighed, giving up on the mug before placing her hands gently on the table. She could still feel the tension between the three of them, and it was far from pleasant. Unable to get a word in, Ethiriel glanced at the silver chain on Henry's neck before softly clearing her throat. "Pardon, but perhaps this is a conversation best saved for later."

Henry stopped to stare, a small blush crept across his cheeks.

Gabe stared sidelong at the frei without lifting his head. He picked up his fork again and finally took a bite.

Ethiriel immediately regretted butting in.

"Forgive me, I am out of place."

Unable to find words, Henry could only stare at his inhuman companion for a moment longer before clearing his throat. He stared down at his place, surprised at the outcome and unsure of what to say next. Ethiriel rarely spoke as it was, but he had never heard her step up in such a way. It gave him severely mixed feelings.

"It's not a problem. You're not a problem," Henry stated, returning his glance to Ethiriel. "You're both part of this family."

Sliding her hands from the table, Ethiriel folded them in her lap. She wouldn't say another word.

The one bite seemed to be all Gabe could muster. As soon as Ethiriel apologized, he set his fork down fully and propped his elbows on the table, a hand on his forehead shielding his eyes from Henry's view.

”This isn't a vacation for me,” Gabe finally spoke after nearly a minute. His mouth hung open, as though to say more, but promptly closed.

Henry exhaled sharply through his nose, his brows knit upward as he stared across at his brother. He watched for a moment, not so much disappointed at how little he was eating but rather at how horribly this conversation was going. He cared about Gabe. A lot. "I never expected it to be. You're here because I invited you into my home to stay as long as you needed. If you want, I could always use your help around the house. I want you to keep occupied with whatever you want; be it applications or anything else you wanted."

Gabe's arm dropped to the table as soon as applications were mentioned. He stared at his brother incredulously with tired eyes and a thin frown.

The Frei wanted to butt in again, to speak her mind, but she -- much like Gabe -- couldn't muster the strength to. She wished Henry would cease; it was obvious that his brother didn't want to discuss further.

Instead, she floated higher above the seat and offered a bow. "If you would excuse me," she said, holding her hand out to blindly search for the door frame, and ultimately exited the room.

"Ethiriel—"

The younger Knight leaned back in his chair, brows raised. He gestured airily with one hand and let his arm fall again. Gabe pushed his chair out and took up his plate.

Henry listened quietly as his brother excused himself. He could hear the crinkle of the bag and the sound of ceramic hitting the metal sink, the sound of the fridge opening and closing. His eyes remained glued to where Ethiriel had left, his brows knit together so tightly it almost hurt. This wasn't what he wanted -- not at all. He wasn't even sure of how this happened in the first place, but it was obvious that he had done something wrong.

Gabe's passing through the room was quick and calculated, and it wasn't long before he heard the door slam in the hallway.

Tensions carried over to the next few days.

The following morning, true to his word, Gabe started unpacking only what he deemed essential. All of the boxes were moved to the guest room and out of the way but only two were unloaded – clothing and hygiene products. Any of the few other boxes he deemed important enough to open were left as such near the foot of the bed while everything else was tucked out of the way, in the closet or a nearby corner.

Henry offered help as well as apology. Both were rebuffed by his brother, who seemed even less inclined to interaction than the previous day.

As for Ethiriel, she had spent the rest of the evening alone in her room. No music, no talking. Even when Henry rapped on her door she dismissed him, refusing to speak for the rest of the night. She felt awful; even though none of it was directed at her, the heavy feeling of burden washed over her and she couldn't shake it. She didn't want to see Henry at all, so she asked politely to be left alone for the night.

After that, things became quiet. Ethiriel and Gabe both kept to themselves and scarcely interacted with Henry, much less each other. If Gabe wasn't tucked away in the guest room then he was in the study using the computer, which was where he was this day. The sound of typing wasn't constant but it was hurried, changing between calm precision and aggressive tapping intermittently.

Ethiriel hadn't left her room since the argument nights before, feeding solely on the sunlight that would seap through her window. It wasn't enough, but she wasn't prepared to deal with Henry, no matter how apologetic and doting he had become. In fact, the doting made her feel worse and brought out the negative emotions she kept inside so tightly.

However, sulking was also unbecoming and she was begrudgingly ready to venture out and at least get a proper meal for herself. She was tired and weak, and needed water and any sort of tarnish she could find.

She slowly opened her door, careful to keep the noise down, and floated down the hall to get to the kitchen. Rummaging through the drawers was far less quiet, despite how hard she tried, but she was able to find herself a snack. Rubbing the spoon between her thumb and finger, she floated back out toward the hall until she heard the clacking of Gabe's keyboard.

Wondering, she approached the sound as best as she could without a guide.

"What is it that you are doing?" she asked, keeping her voice low as she idly fed off of her silverware.

Even with the clattering of silverware in the kitchen as a warning, Ethiriel's passing and approach was otherwise silent. Gabe gave a small start, just barely noticeable as his typing abruptly stopped.

”Uh,” he rubbed his eyes, explanation delayed by a scoff, ”looking for jobs.”

Gabe looked at the spoon in her hands and scratched his stubble. ”Henry's at work.”

"I see..." she said after a short pause, her voice trailing off. Hovering a bit closer, Ethiriel tried her best to focus on the dull glow of the screen. "Are you having any luck?"

He leaned back in the computer chair, one arm draped lazily over it with the other against the desk. Ethiriel's approach was regarded silently. Mainly, Gabe watched her eyes to see what she was training on. The fact she was looking directly at the screen, despite not focusing on anything more specific, made his brows raise.

Gabe murmured and looked back at the screen. ”Not really...” He scratched the side of his head then smoothed his hair down. ”What are you doing, just getting food?”

Ethiriel let out a quiet hum, blinking before leaning back away from the computer to look to the silver in her hand. "That is most unfortunate, you have my condolences and wishes of luck," she said, her expression softening into a neutral tone. "And yes, I needed nourishment, though my appetite is weak."

”Yeah,” Gabe responded quietly, returning both hands to the keyboard.

Hovering lower, closer to seating-height, Ethiriel continued to wring the spoon in her delicate hands. Perhaps it was that she was lonely, or merely that she thought Gabe could use the company, but something was telling her to stay -- even if just for a bit longer.

"Is it always difficult? Searching for work?"

His typing hadn't resumed by the time she asked. For a moment he stared at the monitor himself without any focus.

”I guess. It depends.”

There was a brief silence, Ethiriel thinking hard on what to say. She wasn't used to being the one to start or keep conversation going and it was difficult to judge what Gabe was thinking, even more so without sight. She sighed and lifted her chin.

"I... would like to extend my apologies for the other night. I am sorry that Sir Knight can be so..."

She stuttered, unsure of exactly what to call her guardian. He was so kind to her, eager to please and always working hard to keep her comfortable -- how could she talk down on him? Her hands lowered as she closed her eyes, her brows furrowed in frustration with herself. How could she? How could she be so horrible?

"I have spoken out of line again -- forgive me."

Gabe finally resumed typing in that silence, even continuing through it – until her next pause. He stopped again, palms against the desk's edge, and looked over the frei.

The second apology drew a scoff.

”I know how he is. I've known him my whole life.” His tone wasn't quite harsh but it was far from soft.

Gabe leaned his head back to stare at the ceiling, one foot lazily swaying the seat. ”He is trying to help,” he muted the bite again, ”but he doesn't get it.” After a few more moments of staring, Gabe shook his head and returned to the keyboard. Under his breath, he whispered, ”never ******** gets it.”

Ethiriel listened as Gabe swerved his chair, then again as he mumbled under his breath. She didn't feel the same apparent contempt that the younger Knight sibling held, but she could definitely relate to what he was saying. Henry was nothing but help but he was overbearing at times, even with his good intentions.

"He is far too nice... I feel as if..." she started, voice drifting off again as she consciously stopped herself. It was none of Gabe's problem how she felt in regards to Henry or anyone else, why would he care? No, she needed to think better before speaking. This habit of talking without consideration was becoming a bad habit, even if it was only around the Knight siblings. "Apologies, it is nothing."

While Ethiriel troubled herself over word choice, Gabe's typing fell back into a semi-constant rhythm. Yet again, when she apologized, this rhythm was broken. Instead of stopping entirely, this time he merely paused, sighed, and carried on.

”Go ahead. It's not like I haven't complained about him before.”

"N-no... really, it is nothing," Ethiriel insisted, her brows now knit tightly together, her head bowed. Her loose hair cascaded down over her shoulders, and she had long forgotten about the spoon in her hands. "I have bothered you long enough--" she started, hovering higher with the slightest hesitation.

The chair creaked as he pushed back on it and turned to look at her. His own brows were furrowed, drawn over narrowed eyes.

”Are you serious with that?”

"Am I serious with what?"

He grimaced. ”Apolozing for talking. Just-- say what you want.” Rather than biting, there was a hint of exasperation to his voice.

"I..." Ethiriel paused, lifting her chin. She couldn't find him in the sea of darkness, but she focused on the direction of Gabe's voice. "I apologize for stepping out of line. I have no right to talk ill of the man that cares for me."

Another scoff proceeded Gabe's whisper that held something between frustration and exhaustion. ”Jesus Christ.” With that, he went quiet and the clacking of keys resumed with some of its previous fervor.

Silence continued after that, and once she heard his typing, Ethiriel knew the conversation was over. She was tempted to give another apology but knew that, at this point, it would only frustrate the man further -- and honestly, that was the last thing she wanted to do, especially since he had enough on his plate as it was.

No, she couldn't be a burden to anyone else.

Ethiriel floated near Gabe for another few minutes before setting the now clean spoon onto the desk, then turning toward the silver chain that hung in the door's frame. Both frustrated and thankful for the gesture, she made her way out of the room and back toward hers.

Ethiriel had taken to sneaking out of her bedroom at night for food rather than during the day or when Henry was home. She was still sore, even if he had meant well. He had been rude and prying in business that wasn’t his to meddle in – it didn’t sit well with the Frei. She knew that his apologies were sincere, but she couldn’t stomach it for now. She would give him a few more days.

The lack of proper nourishment was starting to get to the young Raeven, even if she had plenty of sunlight throughout the day. She needed tarnish or rust with plenty of water, but her brooding was cutting into her schedule and even her appetite. She would have to cave in, soon.

Henry had even gone antiquing as a silent apology. Ethiriel was touched, but still hadn’t quite accepted his apologies.

It was uncharacteristic, unladylike, but it was the only way she could think to “punish” him. It wasn’t the first time his words had hurt her, even if they hadn’t been directed at her this time around. She understood Gabe, even if he was rude and, at times, hateful. She felt his aggravation as her own.

Unfortunate.

The Frei would need to eat soon; she could feel the pain of hunger in her rune. She didn’t want to – she wished so hard that she could thrive merely on sunlight… but she wasn’t so lucky.

”Fine,” she thought, pushing herself off of her bed. Ethiriel floated weakly over it for a few moments before finally turning her attention toward the silver chain hanging from her door. The sight of silver used to be a comfort to the Raeven, but now it served as a constant reminder of the burden she was – just how much help she needed. It was irritating, having to rely so heavily on others. Why did she have to be born so helpless?

Ethiriel floated over, her hand slowly running down the length of the chain before removing it from the door entirely. She held it delicately in her hand, examining it carefully before clenching it tightly. In one quick movement, she tossed it onto the floor with a silent huff.

Blindly, her hands felt along the door to find the handle, opening it slowly and quietly. Not knowing if Henry was home, Ethiriel was thankful that she had no feet to patter across the floor as she made her way to the kitchen. Each bit of silver placed strategically across the house went mostly ignored, the Frei making no attempts to actually look at any of it directly.

Her stay in the kitchen was short, immediately finding her personal drawer thanks to, of course, another marker. The young Frei grabbed a large portion of silver bits, deciding it would be best to take more than necessary so that she had something for later. She set them gingerly on the counter so that she could close the drawer without hindrance. Pausing with her hands on the counter, Ethiriel stared at her haul with tired eyes. How long had it been since she properly fed herself? Even the silver was bleary in her eyes. The exhaustion was getting to her – she would need to eat well.

Of course, with the Raeven’s luck, the sound of footsteps sounded behind her. Quickly scooping up her haul, she started back toward her room but was stopped by the last person she wanted to speak with.

”Ethiriel!” Henry said, his voice irritatingly chipper despite the Frei’s obvious discomfort. ”Hungry? Need me to start tarnishing more silver for you?”

He was just trying to be helpful.

”No, thank you,” said Ethiriel, her voice low. Her rune thrummed painfully, but she did her best to ignore it.

”I know you’re still mad at me and I’m really, really sorry,” he added, his own voice dripping with amends. ”I’ve already apologized to Gabe, too…”

Ethiriel thought for a moment, her eyes locking onto the silver bracelet Henry had chosen to wear today. She sighed, glancing away. ”I understand.”

Henry paused for a moment before sighing. ”I’ll give you more time.”

The Frei didn’t need another dismissal; packing up her meal, she moved forward in confidence that Henry would step out of her way. Like she thought, he had, and her trek to her room was unhindered. Upon entry, she secluded herself once more.

She ate well.

Was she being too childish? Henry had just been trying to help, trying to fix the things that went wrong but Ethiriel wouldn’t take it. She had no idea on whether Gabe had accepted his brother’s apology… but she still wouldn’t. The man was nice and actually tried to take care of her, yet she always shut him down. He took better care of her than Leo ever did, yet her bitterness was directed toward the nurse more than anyone else.

Floating just behind her door, the Frei stared down at the chain she had dropped. He was just trying to help and she knew it, yet she was acting like a child denied of a new toy.

Ethiriel sighed. Brushing a strand of hair out of her face, she hovered low enough to pick up the necklace and held it carefully in her hands, staring. She tinkered with it, rolling it in her fingers and examining it at random intervals. The texture felt nice in her hands, and despite the nagging aggravation in the back of her mind, seeing something was still important to her. It was all she had. Sighing again, the Frei’s brows furrowed.

Now, back on her bed, she floated half a foot above so that her branches would not tear up the sheets or mattress. She continued playing with the chain – crumpling it up in her palms, allowing it to hang through her fingers, sliding her fingers along the length; all while staring mindlessly.

Ethiriel stopped, floating back up into a ‘sitting’ position with the necklace sitting in her palm. She squeezed it hard, closing her eyes and letting out a long exhale.

Unable to get her own affairs in order, the Frei tossed the chain across the room in a huff. Her hands met the bed and she clutched the sheets tightly. Why was she being foolish? She should just accept the poor man’s apology and get on with her life. Her attitude was even starting to bother her.

She opened her eyes, immediately meeting the necklace across the room.

What?

Staring in surprise, it took Ethiriel a moment before she pushed herself away from the bed and followed her sights. The chain, now mashed into a mostly solid chunk, rested on the floor near her closet. How did that happen? She picked it up and examined it closely, grabbing a lumped part of it and pulling carefully – it took a little bit of strength, but the silver stretched and followed her finger as she pulled it away. With wide eyes, she stared at her work.

She had never seen anything in motion, especially silver.

The chain was now ruined, though Ethiriel did her best to bring it back to normal. This was Henry’s mother’s… the Frei swallowed hard. Would he think she did it out of spite? What if he didn’t understand when she explained? There was nothing she could do about it now.

She stopped playing with it, allowing it to sit in her hand. Focusing, Ethiriel placed her free hand on top and held it tightly. She could feel the form shift in her palms. Pulling her hand away, the entire necklace had melted into a single glob of silver. The Raeven looked it over for a moment before setting it on her nightstand.

Ethiriel rested on her chest while on the bed, staring quietly at her work. What was she going to do now? She couldn’t fix it and it wasn’t even hers. She messed up…

The Frei turned her attention to her hand, or at least, stared straight ahead as she held her hand in place. She reached for the silver and rested it on her palm. As before, she brought her free hand over and placed it on top. Ethiriel focused hard, pressing the silver hard against her hand so that it would form in place. The silver then formed a cap over her hand. Making a fist, she tightened her grip and flexed.

Within a minute, silver had seeped from her pores and formed a solid glove over her hand.

In awe, Ethiriel examined her work. How had she done that? Her eyes widened as she looked her hand over, in shock at the sight. It was hard, but she managed to open her fist and finally see her hand – a shape she hadn’t expected. This was amazing…

Quick to get up, the young Raeven nearly bumped into her door as she hastily opened it. She felt along the walls until she met Gabe’s door and knocked gently.

The door didn't open and there was no sound of movement behind it. Only Gabe's exasperated voice.

What, Henry?”

”It is not Henry, it is I,” she responded. Her voice was not frantic, but it held a higher pitch than usual – a mix between nervous and excited.

Silence briefly followed, then broken by the tell tale shuffling of movement. The door was opened and Gabe stood at the threshold. ”Yeah?”

Whatever aggravation clung to his voice before was pushed down.

Ethiriel’s gaze did not rise to meet Gabe in any way once the door was open, merely staring straight ahead with her hand held out. The silver casing glistened in the change of light.

”I am not sure how I did it, but…” she said, offering out her hand. She then forced her fingers to clench and open again, though the movement was slow. Ethiriel then glanced up rather than forward, hoping that she was at least able to meet his gaze.

He looked at her hand when she indicated and, somehow, became quieter. Ethiriel's aim was just a little off, looking more at his nose and cheek than his eyes. Gabe didn't notice while he watched her move the metallic appendage.

”So that's not normal,” he asked rhetorically, tone flat. It didn't quite rise so much as loosen when he spoke next. Gabe quietly asked, ”Is it stuck like that?”

Ethiriel met his silence in turn, looking back down once he finally spoke. She adjusted her hand again, staring in subdued awe before responding.

”I do not know, I have not tried,” she said, squeezing her hand once more. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, exhaling quietly through her mouth. It was a slow process, but the silver slowly receded back into her skin, returning to its soft, normal state.

And the necklace was gone.

The Frei stared at nothing now that there was no silver, nothing to catch her attention. Exhaling hard, Ethiriel couldn’t help but panic a little. She held it in as best as she could but her expression said it all.

Her show was met with another brief delay in response. The only thing Gabe apparently thought to ask didn't pertain to the necklace at all.

”Did it hurt?”

”No…”

Ethiriel lifted both her gaze and her hand, though she could not see it she wiggled her fingers, turning her palm outward and inward. She hadn’t had the chance to eat yet, but she no longer felt the pain of hunger within. Did she feed? What was she going to do about that necklace?

She paused, then offered a small bow. ”I am sorry if I bothered you, I was just surprised—“

He exhaled through his nose.

”I would have been, too.” Gabe muttered something about “Silver Surfer s**t” under his breath. ”Well-- you figured it out and it didn't hurt. Nothing to worry about, I guess.”

Lifting herself up from her bow, Ethiriel nodded. She heard the comment, though she didn’t understand the reference and decidedly left it alone. Perhaps this ability would come in handy someday, even if for now it was just a strange occurrence.

”Did I interrupt you?”

He buried his face in the crook of his arm to cough and clear his throat. ”Nothing important.” The typing that usually accompanied him had stopped nearly two hours ago.

Ethiriel’s brows knit at Gabe’s cough, her hand drawing back to meet the other at her chest. ”Have you medicated?” she asked, her tone clearly showing her worry.

A moment of hesitation preceded Gabe's scoff. ”You his stand-in, now?”

The Frei’s expression faltered for just a moment, her brows settling while looking away. ”My apologies, I was just concerned,” she said, lowering her voice. ”I suppose I should allow you to rest. I hope you rest well.”

Gabe went quiet again, though it didn't last long as he tried to mask clearing his throat a second time. ”Yeah.” He sounded distant despite not having moved. Then, like an after thought: ”Thanks.”

Ethiriel offered another bow in response. Without another word, she turned away and headed back to her own room.

She would need to experiment more.

Tea for Three

With an invitation for tea, Ethiriel spends some time with Aina and Duncan.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 03, 2015 11:17 am

It had been a little over a week and a half since Ethiriel had decided to seclude herself. Visits to Gabe were infrequent during her nightly excursions for food and water as she merely passed by in most cases. Sure, she would stop by with a muted but friendly hello and a word or two, but for the most part she let him be.

She figured he wouldn’t want her bothering him.

For the most part, she had been napping quietly – more like resting her eyes as the minutes ticked away. It was difficult to sleep during the day as the sunlight would seep through the windows and sustain her. Ethiriel couldn’t complain; even if she was pouting, Henry was doing everything in his power to make her comfortable – even now dropping off tarnished bits of silver at her door so she wouldn’t have to go all the way to the kitchen in her supposedly weakened state. She was grateful, though it still was a tender point, bringing home the fact that she, indeed, needed help.

The routine outside of her room scarcely changed. While Henry was at work, Gabe was in the office typing at the computer. Now and then he would walk by her door, on a mission towards the kitchen, but there was very little noted hesitance as he passed.

It was roughly an hour ago that he had last walked by. On that pass, there had been a slight delay in his step, but Gabe continued on his way without stopping. The floor creaked to announce his passing once more. This time it came to a halt just barely at her door. Seconds ticked by with nothing but silence and the easily sensed presence of another. Beneath his feet the floor protested and Gabe finally stood in front of her room.

There were three short knocks.

The answer was hesitant, Ethiriel’s voice somewhat meek. ”Yes? May I help you?” she asked, lifting herself up from her bed. She floated just above it, her elbows against the pillow top as leverage.

Before speaking, there was his telltale throat clearing. ”Hey,” Gabe addressed her as dispassionately as ever, ”I'm taking a break.” His weight shifted. ”It's nice out.”

Ethiriel remained silent for a moment, listening carefully to each movement Gabe made. He sounded so forced with his words, almost as if he were reciting dully off of a script or suggestion. She lowered herself back onto her pillow, though her eyes remained open.

”Is it?” she questioned. She could feel the warmth from her window, though part of her wished she could have known what it looked like. Ethiriel sighed before finally prying herself off of her bed and floated to the door.

Aside from a gentle thud from her hands finding the door, the time it took for her to locate the handle and open it was short. She stared ahead, her eyes resting on Gabe’s collarbone. She stared sightlessly for a moment before lifting her chin.

”May I help you with something, Sir Gabriel?”

He stayed put while she fiddled with the door and hadn't moved at all by the time she opened it. Gabe sighed through his nose, the sound slightly muted by the turn of his head. He wasn't looking at her.

”No,” he was quiet, ”I'm going stir crazy, so I'm gonna go around the block.” There was a tentative pause. ”You get any air lately?”

The sigh was heard, its tone changing with the turn of his head. Ethiriel’s brow quirked in response. There was another pause after his question, the Frei considering what he was actually asking. Her eyes softened, blankly staring ahead with nothing to focus on.

”I would not mind.”

The floor creaked as Gabe relaxed his stance.

”Yeah. Alright.” Gabe moved aside and took slow steps out of the hall.

It wasn't cold with the sky clear and the sun bearing down, though there was a breeze that kept things from being too uncomfortable. He didn't need much to prepare, just his shoes and a pair of sunglasses tucked in his shirt collar for if it got too bright.

Ethiriel didn’t need much, herself. The day was warm enough that she would not need a jacket, but she did grab the parasol sitting at her door just in case. She followed a bit behind Gabe, holding the handle carefully as she floated down the hallway. The Frei reached out before her, blindly searching for the man’s arm or shoulder to take hold of.

Gabe's movements were practiced and solitary. He moved without consideration for Ethiriel as he readied himself, only to stop halfway to the door as he noticed her fumbling; he doubled back, slowly stepping within reach. Once her arm was wrapped around his, the younger Knight's movements were notably slower compared to the pacing of his shoes just moments earlier.

He gathered his keys, wallet, and phone, locked the door as they stepped out, and lead Ethiriel into Gambino's streets. The sky was brighter than it seemed from the window. Gabe donned his sunglasses and ruffled his bangs, only to adjust them back into place. He sighed.

”You good?” The question was stiff, but he seemed unmotivated to move until it was answered.

”Indeed,” she responded, gratefully taking his arm gently in her own. Ethiriel’s other hand rested against Gabe’s upper arm, holding herself steady in preparation.

Their first few steps together were slow, almost cautious. All around them were the bustling noises of the island; people passing them by, voices chatting, the rolling of car wheels or rattling of bicycle chains. The salty air was clean and fresh with hints of pineapple, coconut, and just a little fish. Gabe remained quiet, though now and then he would turn against Ethiriel's arm to glance at her. Sometimes his steps moved more horizontal than lead them forward as he made room for other walkers.

He let out a short breath. ”Gambino's such a tourist trap.”

Despite all of the noise, Ethiriel focused solely on Gabe’s arm and his movements as they walked, only giving him a small nod in acknowledgment as he pointed out the hustle and bustle of those around him. She caught the scents, not only of the fruit but the people that painted their surroundings. Everyone carried their own scent, just like they carried their own faces, and in a way it was somewhat intriguing to the tea frei. She hadn’t stopped to think of all the people around them before, and it was new.

When she offered no rebuttal, Henry's brother joined her in silence. His pace was casual but notably slow with her on his arm. Considering the sound of the crowd and the crashing ocean not far off made it difficult to hold a conversation as it was.

Here and there, Gabe would clear his throat or adjust his arm. It wasn't always a careful movement, almost like a stumble when Ethiriel's arms came with, but never enough to dislodge her. A few times between long stretches of silence he would take a breath in a way that seemed to suggest he might speak but it was always followed by a sigh and carried no words. It wasn't until they had been walking for nearly ten minutes that he finally piped up.

”Gonna head back, if it's fine with you.”

Ethiriel had remained mostly silent throughout the walk as well, making less idle noises than the younger of the Knight siblings as they made their way through their route. Her arm remained locked with his, hardly jostled other than the small bouncing from each step that Gabe made.

”That is fine,” she answered, looking over to Gabe.

”Alright.”

The trek back was about the same. Quiet between them, just the ambient noise of Gambino for company.

Gabe lead Ethiriel up the stairs. Keys jingled against each other, all metal but not quite silver. The door opened with a slight waft of cool air. Inside was a moderate temperature but for the moment it felt like a chill in comparison to the beach-side sun.

His keys were deposited haphazardly in a heap on the nearest counter with a loud clatter.

Ethiriel now paid no attention to any of the ambient noise, nor the jingle of the keys or the sound they made when the hit the table. Her arm remained hooked onto Gabe’s as she was lead into the house, but once the door shut behind them she finally pulled away.

”Thank you,” she said, giving the Knight a gentle bow of the head.

”Sure,” Gabe said stiffly.

There was a blank pause between them and from the man himself. No sound, no motion. Eventually It was broken but no less forced as anything else he seemed to do or say.

”I gotta get back to work, so,” he trailed off, ”you, uh-- need anything?”

”No, I am quite all right, Gabriel.”

Ethiriel said nothing else, offering a full bow before glancing behind her to the silver left to guide her.

”Right.”

With that, the two left each other to their own devices. It would be a small handful of hours before Henry returned home and, to anyone none-the-wiser, they would have scarcely moved from their rooms at all.

While the day had been planned for a while, not everyone was very excited about its arrival. Henry, as always, was ever so pleased and looked forward to his brother and girlfriend meeting, and had been eagerly awaiting this day. Ethiriel was, for the most part, indifferent, along with Gabe -- who seemed far less pleased than anyone.

Henry: "She'll be here any minute!" -clasps his hands together, grinning from ear to ear-

Ethiriel: "It will be a... pleasure."

Gabe: -using the back of a couch to lean against with his rear, arms folded- "You're like a chihuahua."

Henry: -smirks- ”I'm just excited! I'm sure you'll like her!”

Gabe: -leans back and stares at the ceiling; mutters- "So you keep saying."

Candice was running a little late due to a meeting running overtime, but she booked it and managed arrive at Henry's doorstep without feeling too frazzled. She brushed a few strands of loose hair behind her ears, straightened her back a little more, sighed reflexively while braving herself, and rung the doorbell.

Candice: -grips the strap of her purse and checks her phone again to make sure of the time-

Henry: -had just been about to respond to Gabe's mumbling but was interrupted by the doorbell, his smile growing with excitement- "Ah, there she is!" -practically pranced to the door, swinging it wide open and holding his arms open for Candice- "Hey!!"

Candice: -grins when Henry opens the door- "Hi, sweetheart!" -extends her arms out and gratefully walks to Henry for a warm hug, then leans back to look up at him, smile bright- "I'm sorry about being running a little late! How are you?" -peeks past Henry's shoulder curiously- "Is your brother already here?"

Henry: -takes the hug happily, his arms practically wrapping around her shoulders- "It's fine! You're not late!" -pulls away and runs the back of his fingers against her hair- "Yeah, Gabe's here! He's waiting with Ethiriel in the living room -- come on!" -steps away from the door frame, allowing her to enter-

Candice: -tiptoes for a moment to plant a kiss on Henry's cheek, then nods- "Oh, okay, great!" -smiles at Henry as she passes through the door and walks beside Henry, intent on entering with him to the living room-

Henry: -leans into the kiss with closed eyes and a low chuckle, closing the door behind Candice- -wraps an arm around her shoulder while leading her into the other room-

Ethiriel: -had been silent with Gabe in the living room but lifts her chin at the sound of footsteps- "Greetings, Lady Candice."

Henry: -turns the corner with his lady friend in tow, looking ever so pleased-

Gabe: -leans on the back of the couch with one arm, furrows his brows for a second when they arrive then eases back and nods at Candice once- "Hey."

Candice: -smiles when she spots Ethiirl and nods- "Hi, Ethiriel, it's good seeing you!" -once she spots Gabe, she grins and waves, clearly happy to see him, and waves- "Hello! Wow, it's great finally getting to meet you, Gabe!" -extends a hand toward him for a handshake, stepping just a bit farther from Henry-

Gabe: -straightens up a little and returns the handshake briefly- "Yeah, I keep hearing about you. Good to have a face to your name, finally." -pauses, glances at Ethiriel, then looks back and clears his throat- "You here for dinner?"

Henry: -watches, grin ever present, as they exchange greetings and steps over to Ethiriel, placing a hand gently on her shoulder-

Ethiriel: "A pleasure to meet with you again." -shrinks just the tiniest bit at Henry's hand but doesn't pull away-

Candice: "Same to you, actually! Henry raved about you." -drops her purse off below the coffee table- "I am. Honey, how can I help with dinner?" -looks over at Henry once she straightens up-- smiles sympathetically at him and the Frei-

Henry: -removes his hand from Eth's shoulder and hikes a thumb toward the kitchen- "There actually isn't much to do so you can relax! It'll be ready in just another couple of minutes!"

Gabe: -puts his other hand on the back of the couch and raps his fingers against it- "Great." -doesn't sound enthused or sarcastic, just pushes off the sofa and rounds it to take a seat-

Candice: "Okay!" -smiles and walks to the kitchen to peek at the oven- "What's on the menu?" -looks back at Henry with a smile- "May I have something to drink, dear? We spent too much time today blabbering at each other."

Henry: -watches Gabe round his way into seating, gently nudging Eth to do the same- "Oh!" -makes his way over to Candice, patting her shoulder softly- "I've got some stew in the crock pot! It's just about done! And of course you can have something to drink! What would you like, sweety?"

Gabe: -squints when Candice and Henry leave without much notice, then looks over at Eth- "A pleasure?" -voice low and skeptical-

Ethiriel: -turns her head toward gabe, though could only guess where he was- "We must show manners..."

Candice: -smiles when Henry pats her shoulder, kisses him on the cheek again- "Mm, that sounds great. Mm! Something sweet, could you surprise me?" -leans back to look over at the living room, toward Gabe and Eth; waves- "Gabe, Ethiriel? Would you two like anything to drink?"

Henry: -leans into the kiss again, smile softening- "Absolutely!" -turns toward the living room as well-

Ethiriel: "No, but I thank you for the thought."

Henry: "Gabe?"

Gabe: "Nope, thanks."

Henry: "Alright, suit yourself! Honey, you can go sit down and I'll be right out!" -happily romps into the kitchen, digging through the cupboard for two glasses- -fills them both up with tea he had made just that morning-

Candice: "Okie dokie! Thank you." -she walks back to the living room to sit at the couch beside Gabe-- with a happy sigh, she looks at Gabe, then Eth- "So, how have you two been doing?"

Gabe: -resting his arm on the couch and his knuckles against his mouth- "Been fine."

Ethiriel: -sitting properly with her hands resting against her 'lap'- "I have been well. How have you been, Lady Candice?"

Henry: -finally comes back from the kitchen and sits opposite of Candice, placing her drink on the table- "Yeah, how's your day been other than the meeting?"

Candice: "That's wonderful." -smiles calmly between Gabe and Eth, then grins at Henry and offers him a quiet 'thank you' when he sets down her cup-- picks it up-- sighs- "My day... well, it's been a handful. It's the beginning of the school year, so everyone's had something to complain about..." -takes a sip of her drink- "And we're really worried about one of our students... he's been at the hospital, he hasn't been able to attend class for weeks. We're trying to think of something to do to cheer him up. So, if you three have any ideas..."

Henry: -smile lessens just a little, brows furrowed- "I hope the student's okay... Do we know what's wrong with him? What's his name; maybe I've seen him at my hospital--"

Gabe: -leans back against the couch and rests his arm on the back so it hangs between them, almost like a barrier- "You're a teacher?"

Candice: -frowns softly up at Henry and nods- "Well, he's been in and out of the hospital... they think it's chronic pneumonia. His name's Mikey Donahue, if that sounds familar-- he just went into the 7th grade..." -glances over at Gabe-- laughs lightly and shakes her head- "Oh, no, not a teacher. I'm a counselor for Meadowview Middle over in East Barton."

Gabe: -frowns almost instantly, though it's hidden by his knuckles- "Really..." -glances at Henry, then to the coffee table, scoffs- "Well, your boyfriend would know all about that."

Henry: -silent as she explains, then lifts his chin a little- "Yeah, I recognize that name. Poor kid... I'll be sure to let him know that people are worried." -doesn't look toward Gabe but does catch his tone- "Hopefully he gets better soon."

Candice: -glances worriedly at Gabe- "Come again?" -looks back toward Henry and nods, clearly concerned- "Uhuh... thank you so much, sweetheart." -smiles- "That's what we're all hoping. He's our little trooper."

Gabe: -clears his throat- "He's an expert." -waits for them to finish, lightly taps the back of his couch cushion- "Just give the kid something to stay occupied."

Candice: -frowns lightly at Gabe, then toward Henry in vague apprehension-- nods, though- "We've certainly been trying..."

Henry: -nods as well, taking a quick glance toward Eth, then back to Candice- "I'll do what I can to help the process along."

Gabe: -makes a vague shrugging gesture with his hand but doesn't say anything else on the matter-

Candice: -smiles- "Thank you, sweetheart." -she refuses to settle into awkward silence-- instead, she turns toward Eth- "What have you been up to recently, Ethiriel?"

Ethiriel: -has been listening closely despite her apparent lack of interest- -turns to Candice's direction and nods- "I have not been up to much, Lady Candice. I have mostly been in my own thoughts."

Henry: -looks to Ethiriel sympathetically. gaze lingers for a moment before turning back to Candice- "She's... been preferring alone time lately. She just needs her space."

Gabe: -scoffs quietly and adjusts his hand against his mouth-

Candice: -nods sympathetically- "Uhuh... I understand. How has that been? Have you been resting well?"

Ethiriel: "I have, indeed. Thank you for your concern." -lightly bows her head as she speaks-

Candice: -smiles- "I'm glad to hear that. Of course, honey-- are you still free for a walk sometime?"

Ethiriel: -offers as genuine a smile as possible but falls short- "Of course."

Candice: "Wonderful." -she smiles and returns to her glass, realizing neither Gabe nor Ethiriel seem keen on speaking-- instead, she offers Henry a smile and glances toward the kitchen, sighs- "I'm sorry I couldn't bring anything for dessert with me today, Henry. I was all set to make us a peach cobbler and everything."

Henry: -stares at Eth as she talks, brows knit slightly- -falters for just a moment once the attention is back on him, his smile growing wide- "No, it's okay! It's not necessary; and besides, if we want something sweet I've got snack cakes!" -laughs, pushing himself up off of the couch- "It should be ready any minute if you guys wanna take your places!"

Ethiriel: -doesn't address the conversation further now that Henry's shifted attention- -floats above her own seat and, thanks to silver bangles strategically placed, manages to find her seat at the table-

Gabe: -gets up after Ethiriel and peeks in the kitchen before taking his usual spot at the table-

Candice: -laughs- "If you say so! It's been so long since I've had a snack cake... oh-- alright!" -she stands from the couch and follows behind the Frei and Gabe-- she takes her seat and sits near both Eth and Gabe, then looks over at Henry- "You're sure you don't need any help, Henry?"

Henry: "That's a good thing!" -laughs as well, followed by a light grunt from him lifting the inner pot out of the cooker- "Don't wanna eat too many processed foods so long as you can help it!" -brings the pot and sits it down on a coaster- "I'm sure, just gimme another minute!" -ducks back into the kitchen and brings out three large bowls and sets of silverware, placing them all in their proper spots- -had brought Ethiriel her special meal and set it down in front of her before finally taking his own place- "Alright, get however much you want!"

Gabe: -watches Henry do all this himself with a mildly scrutinizing brow raise- "Yeah, thanks." -sits up and leans forward to fill his bowl first, though doesn't start eating immediately- "What'd you put in it this time?"

Henry: -watches with a smile as Gabe serves himself, glad to see him eat- "Oh, the usual. Beef tips, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes. I hope you like it--"

Candice: "Mm! That sounds delicious. I've only had stews with just tomato in the soup base before..." -smiles up at Henry- "After you, dear!"

Henry: "In that case, I REALLY hope you enjoy it!" -lets out a gentle scoff, shaking his head- "Where would my manners be? You're the guest; go ahead, Candice!"

Candice: "I'm sure!" -laughs and shakes her head, sighs- "Henry... oh, alright, because I can't resist--" -she takes up a bowl for herself and serves herself a moderate portion, smiling all the while-

Henry: -watches in content, then follows suit once Candice finished pouring her portion- "Ethiriel, would you like some water with your meal?"

Ethiriel: "No, but I thank you, Sir Knight..." -holding onto one of the forks given to her, idly rubbing her fingers over its surface-

Henry: "Just let any of us know if you change your mind! Does everyone have what they need?"

Gabe: -closes his eyes for a second and sighs when Candice finally pours herself some, picks up his spoon and stirs his- "Think we're good, mom."

Candice: -smiles toward Ethiriel, then back at Henry, and shakes her head-- laughs over at Gabe at the retaliation- "It looks like we're all good, Henry. Let me see..." -she spoons up a bit of broth and blows on it to cool, then tastes the spoonful-- her smile grows- "Mm..." -she looks down at her bowl and mixes it a bit- "This is delicious!"

Henry: -quirks a brow at Gabe but laughs as well, bringing a spoonful to his lips- -somehow manages to perk up more at the compliment, finally taking his own first bite- "I'm so glad! I can teach you how to make it sometime if you'd like? Super easy."

Gabe: -doesn't pay much mind to either of them while getting a few spoonfuls- "Yeah, it's good." -leans back in his chair and glances at Ethiriel's usual meal of silverware; asks flatly- "How's your spoon?"

Ethiriel: -does not look up from her silver, expression remaining quite neutral- "It is just fine. I am glad you are enjoying your stew."

Candice: -smiles up at Henry after enjoying another spoonful- "Mm, I would love that! We could have a cooking night." -glances toward Eth at Gabe's question, marvelling at the Frei's uniqueness-

Henry: "Sounds like a plan!" -begins eating his own bowl a bit more seriously, intending to finish-

The rest of the meal was enjoyed in relative silence, save for the minor conversation shared between Henry and Candice. One or the other would occasionally bring Ethiriel or Gabe into the mix, but both were quick to become silent not long after.

Ethiriel soon retired to her own room while Gabe left to search for more jobs. The Frei was silent again afterwards, choosing to remain alone for most of her time. Candice was sweet and very accepting but the poor tea girl couldn't find the interest to stay.

Ethiriel hovered with her back just above the bed, staring at the silver ring she daintily handled. It was such a simple thing, yet so carefully crafted. There were no lumps, nothing disfigured – just a ring. It didn’t fit any of her fingers, it was slightly too large, but the Frei toyed with it as she lay silently in her room.

Why did she still feel so at war? Her mind drifted as she idly played with the ring, losing what little focus she had as it was. The Frei stopped fiddling with the ring, instead clasping it in her palm. She laid her hand against her chest, holding the ring tight. Ethiriel stared upward into the darkness and let out a long sigh. While she may not have been particularly happy, she had to admit that she had a decent life here. A guardian that took care of her, plenty of air and sunshine… At least this guardian actually made the time for her. And while he had a funny way of showing it, it seemed like Gabriel cared – even if just a little.

With a huff, Ethiriel closed her eyes and relaxed against her pillow. Her back did not touch the bed, nor did her branch-wings.

Did she even miss Leonard? Why was she dragging this out? How could she be so childish? A silly little grudge with hardly any basis yet she carried it strongly within her; Ethiriel hardly recognized it in herself. Yet, as silly as it was, she couldn’t drop it. She felt wronged – not just by Leo but by Henry. Sure, his mistake was simple and unintended, but she couldn’t help but feel bitter about the whole ordeal.

She squeezed the ring again. Grow up, she thought.

Even in company she was just the slightest bit hostile toward her new guardian; talking shortly with him, only responding to his questions and never asking any of her own. She belittled him mentally and just… how could she be so cruel? Ethiriel knew he cared, otherwise he wouldn’t have been trying so hard, and here she was treating him subhuman. She grimaced at herself as she let the ring drop to her side.

Ethiriel hovered a little higher for just a moment, allowing herself to flip over so she could rest on her chest. She crossed her arms and rested her chin on them, letting out another slow exhale.

Leonard had hardly even gave her the time of day, always too busy with his own projects to take her for walks or get her out into the sun. All she had while with him were the windows and the early morning runs he would go on – which she never participated in, he always insisted she stay on the bench.

Meanwhile, Henry took her on afternoon or evening walks almost every day, making sure she got her own exercise as well. He was so much more kind to her. Why was she being so spoiled.

Ethiriel knew she needed to get over her feelings, knowing well that they were pointless at this point.

The Frei stared at the silver spoon resting on her nightstand, merely wishing for something to focus on. This stupid blindness of hers was the cause of all this. If she hadn’t been blind, Leonard would not have abandoned her. She wouldn’t have been a burden. She would have been able to do things on her own and not require the assistance of someone else at all times. In a way, she was useless.

Closing her eyes, Ethiriel mentally cursed herself for these trains of thought.

She should try harder to be nice to Henry. She should put forth an effort, something she hadn’t done in the entirety of being under the poor nurse’s wing.

It was time to grow up.

”Ethiriel?”

Had she been asleep? Ethiriel rose from her sheets, gingerly rubbing her eyes. What time was it? How long had she been out? The Frei had no intention of falling asleep, but here she was, blearily searching the room for something to focus on.

A gentle knock sounded from the door, followed by Henry’s voice once more, ”Ethiriel, are you awake? Is everything okay?”

”Everything is all right,” Ethiriel called from her stupor. Really, how long had she been out? She couldn’t even remember falling asleep – it was almost a point of annoyance. ”Is there something you need of me?” she asked, finally pulling herself out from under her comforter. It had been so nice and warm, for once it didn’t overheat her, but now outside of them it seemed cold despite it still being fall.

”Well, I was wanting to know,” Henry started, slowly opening the door to wave his hand, immediately grabbing her attention with the silver ring on his finger, ”if you would like to go on a walk?”

For once Henry had caught her defenseless, her hair mussed over her face as she crawled from beneath her covers, her eyes tired and bleary. Ethiriel, slightly embarrassed, moved a few strands away from her face and glanced away from the nurse’s hand.

”I…” she stumbled, clearing her voice and trying to gain her composure. She was still so out of it, what happened? Had it been so long since she’d eaten?

Remembering her vow, to attempt and make peace with the man, she straightened herself and gave a small nod. ”Yes, I… I would like to go on a walk.” Considering it had been over a week since she had last agreed, she removed herself from her bed entirely – something she hadn’t really done much of in days. This was so embarrassing now that she thought of it, this tantrum. She was better than this and she knew it.

”I’m glad to hear it,” Henry said, his smile clear in his voice. ”Do you need help finding clothes?”

”No,” Ethiriel said, floating over to her dresser. She gently stroked the silver chain that decorated her furniture, her guidepost, before opening the creaky drawer that held her shirts.

Henry left the room so she could get dressed in private. ”Just let me know when you’re ready.”

It took a few minutes but Ethiriel was able to find a nice, sleeveless shirt, something that wouldn’t overheat her during the walk – she was still shy about her skin but the more she wore these clothes the more comfortable she was getting. She put it on with some difficulty, frustrated with her branches. They made it difficult to pull shirts from over her head, and then there was getting her back branches through holes. How annoying…She closed her eyes and focused on her back, straining for a moment before the branches complied. It was a slow process, but she was able to shrink her branches enough to pull her shirt comfortably over her head and back before allowing them to spring back into full mast. Ethiriel reached a hand back and gently ran a finger across the length of her branches, a small smile spreading across her face.

Turning around, the Frei had forgotten that she had accidentally consumed the marker for her door and she hesitated. She felt for the phone in her pocket, making sure it was in place before she reached her hand out and moved forward. It wasn’t until she touched the door did she relax, feeling along its side for the door handle.

She would have to tell Henry what she had done.

”I am ready,” Ethiriel called, peeking out from behind her door. Henry hadn’t moved far, just enough so that he wasn’t in the way, half way down the hall.

”You look great!” the nurse complimented. ”Your skin is getting so tan, it’s a very good look for you!”

Perhaps it was luck that, for the season, her window had been the perfect sunning spot.

”Thank you.”

”We can make the walk as long or short as you want, Ethiriel. Just let me know if you get tired.”

”I shall let you know, Sir Knight.”

Again with the formalities. Couldn’t she just get comfortable? Ethiriel’s expression faltered for just a moment before she composed herself once more, lifting her chin and silently clearing her throat. ”Sir Henry.”

She attempted a smile.

Henry stumbled for a minute before a grin formed on his face. ”Miss Ethiriel,” he smiled.

The nurse offered his hand to Ethiriel, his ring being her guide. She took his arm in hers, the crooks of their elbows meeting. Henry gave a gentle squeeze before removing the Frei’s hat from the hat rack and offering it to her to keep the sun out of her eyes. It was still bright outside, still warm, and even with her blindness he didn’t want to risk her eyes.

For the most part, at least for the beginning, the walk was silent; Ethiriel’s mind swirling over what to say to the man while Henry enjoyed the scenery. Every once in a while he would try to describe things he had seen, but the Frei couldn’t imagine any of it from words alone. It was still thoughtful and she did her best to smile for him – an attempt to be more civil. He was trying… he really was. Trying his hardest to make her happy – much more than Leo had ever done. Why was it so hard to accept Henry’s kindness? Once again, she mentally cursed herself for her thoughts.

”Ethiriel?” Henry chimed after a long period of silence on both of their parts.

There was a brief pause, but Ethiriel finally answered with a soft, ”yes?”

Henry cleared his throat, his smile softening despite his companion’s inability to see. ”I want to apologize about anything I’ve done to upset or offend you. I know… you haven’t been the most fond of me, but I want to make up for it. Is there anything I can do?”

In shock, Ethiriel’s eyes widened and her lips parted wordlessly.

”I’ve got some plans to make you more comfortable at home. A couple of surprises that I can’t wait to get underway. I know they’ll make you happy.”

How was it so hard to accept his kindness?

Why?

Why?

There were no words. The Frei’s mind blanked and she could only stare forward in silence.

”I…”

She paused.

”I am so sorry…. Henry… I have been…”

Ethiriel stuttered.

”I have been so childish. I am sorry for this… this idiotic grudge I have held for you. It is pointless and I wish on you my humblest apologies.”

There was another pause, and Henry’s expression softened into a sad smile. He gave Ethiriel’s arm a gentle squeeze, his free hand finding her arm and giving a pat or two. ”It’s okay, Ethiriel. I understand. It’s been hard…” he said, taking a glance at her face. ”I just hope I can help you more.”

Tears pooled from EThiriel’s heavy-lidded eyes, and her free hand was quick to wipe them away.

He was too kind. Far too kind. Ethiriel couldn’t help but feel like a burden, yet here he was, immediately accepting and overflowing with a kindness she had never experienced before. Perhaps things were better here with Henry, where someone was willing to make time for her and sacrifice their own time. Just for her.

Just for her.

”Things are going to be alright,” Henry offered, sighing contently as he finally looked away. Another moment of silence ensued, leaving the two to think over their words and actions. Ethiriel’s mind swirled with thoughts over their situation and how she would try to better herself. Her free hand reached for her phone once more, for comfort.

”Hey, Ethiriel,” Henry said, gently nudging her arm.

”Yes?”

”…would you like to run?”

The Frei paused again, unsure of exactly what that entailed.

Silently, Henry guided Ethiriel from his arm to around his neck, holding on from behind. At first her grip was loose, but as soon as Henry gained momentum she held on tightly, eyes widening at the sudden sensation of high winds. She was frightened, never having experienced this speed before, and she almost regretting not giving a negative answer. Instead she held tightly, burying her face into the back of Henry’s neck – who gave a gentle chuckle at the sensation.

He continued like this for a moment, until Ethiriel’s grip had loosened. The more she grew used to it, the more comfortable the sensation was. Would she be able to do this someday? Would she be able to run, or would she still be burdened by this damn blindness? Would she still have Henry or any friends to keep her head up?

She hoped so.

She really did.

The walk home was, once again, silent. Both had said their peace, and things would hopefully improve from there. Ethiriel at least hoped, anyway. She still felt strange about the Knight family, but the more she grew to know Gabe and Henry, the more at-home she felt. Perhaps someday she could comfortably call this place her home.
