*Bard doesn't have exact change, and so he pulls into one of the manual lanes behind a grimy gray semi. He rolls down the window and grabs his wallet. He then reaches across Luke and grabs something from the glove box*
*In a minute they're up to the toll booth window. The middle-aged African-American woman doesn't smile as she takes the money from Bard's gloved hand. She gives him change with a curt "Thank you."*
*Bard smiles* Thank you. And... *he holds out an oversized candy cane* Merry Christmas!
*The woman stares at it for a moment, then takes it with a half smile* "Merry Christmas."
*The toll gate opens, and they're off again. After a moment, Bard says* There're more candy canes in there if you want one.

*Luke watches as Bard hands out a candy cane to the toll booth worker. Luke smiles at the randomness of it. Well that was damn right jolly. As they pull away, Luke says both to himself and to Bard.* Man, you really get into this holiday.

Can you imagine working for minimum wage in a glass and metal box in the middle of a blizzard on Christmas night? Having to put up with impatient drivers, most of whom are tired, drunk, and irritated at you for doing your job?
No one should feel forgotten. Especially not on Christmas.
*he looks over at Luke and flashes a smile* I didn't expect to be driving to Pennsylvania though. I think we'll have to get some more candy canes when we stop off for gas.

*Luke returns the smile, but it's an appraising one. He looks away, not even knowing what to say. It wasn't enough that this guy had to leave his friend's bash and give up his holiday to personally drive him across three states because Luke decided he needed to go. He kept candy canes in his glove compartment for whoever they ran into along the way.*
*Finally he says.* It's about time Santa got some competition. *Luke checks the glove compartment.* You've still got about six or seven of them in there.
