Syn wandered the streets aimlessly, eyeing each building carefully to see if it held what she wanted. She was getting to the parts of the city that weren't as destroyed as others, so nicer homes were starting to pop up. A squawk and rustle of feathers alerted her to Tuslo's arrival. She held out one arm without looking and felt the customary weight of the small macaw on her arm. Without saying a word she kept walking for a moment, then remarked as if they had conversed in normal speech, "Competition, eh? I should think that raven would be more concerned about Malaria" still using her nickname for Midnight "than ye. After all, yer male and fowl. She's woman and lovely."

She paused at one building, listening to the bustle of servants inside, remembering that when she had worked at the bank she had heard rumors of a dark-haired lady living in the building. Well, perhaps the rumors had been right, perhaps not, but the sounds and the look of building told her she was right. She started to sing a pirate shanty gaily as she circled the building once, giving it a once over. She gave a piercing whistle, pleased, then moved to one of the open windows in the building and called, "Malaria? Ye hiding in there?"

Hearing the Captain say he was going below deck to address the doctor caught Reginald's attention. Looking up from his spot on the quarterdeck steps with his mouth full of lemon cake, he had the most confused look on his face.

"Where's he going?" he muffled through the cake. He tried to finish chewing and swallow, but by the time he was ready to say something to the Captain, he had already gone below.

"Oh well, surely he'll see me when he comes back up."

*Jaden watched as the Doctor took the cake and closed his book as he laid it in his lap. She was silent for a few moments before she noticed him turning about to look at her, rather than her shadow. She was somewhat flushed in the face. Her thoughts had centered squarely on her letter she had left him in his quarters before attending to the treats for the crew. Trying desperately to think of anything to take her mind off of her slight embarassment, she said the first thing that came into her head*

"Ah... no Doctor... I was just... wondering what you were reading..." She was indeed interested in what he was doing, but she could tell her shallow attempt may be discovered and, at some point, her rouse would be called out.

*Despite her casting a shadow across his book, it was obvious that night was soon approaching and a cool breeze could be felt drifting across the deck. The slight shiver that crossed her shoulders caused her to put down the bag filled with cakes and thermoses of lemonade while standing beside the Doctor. She was suprised only little that her bag of cakes and juice was snuck up upon, confiscated and ravaged by the rest of the onboard crew as they sifted through it like gold dubloons. Obviously, there were those who desired seconds.

It was much to her relief that the Doctor had heard the Captain just after she had said her piece. Nervous as she was of his interaction with her in any way, she hoped her half-hearted retort would suffice. And this distraction of the Captain searching for him was oddly comforting to her. She smirked slightly as the Doctor wondered aloud where the Captain was off looking for him with his cheeks filled to the brim with lemon cake.

Taking a moment to reassure her mind that nothing had been heard by him or had happened in regards to her odd behavior, she sat down near the Doctor, as now she would also have to wait for the Captain. She had been told to speak with him when she was able. Now was as good a time as any.*

*Stepping up ondeck through the small swinging cabin doors, he stood up straight and walked up to the foreward rail. Leaning against it, he sighed aloud about his failed attempt to locate the Doctor. Closing his eyes, he whipes the sweat off his brow*

Mediterranean Climates aren't meant for Wool & Cotton Uniforms..
... and this damned hat doesn't sit proper anymore.

*As the slits of his eyes opened, a slight movement to his right caught his eye.*

"AH! THERE YOU ARE DOCTOR! OH, MY AND MISS JADEN TOO."

*Upon the small stairs that sat between the maindeck and the quarter, sat Doctor Baxter & Miss Jaden snacking upon lemon cake & lemonade. Reginald seemed to be quite enthrawled within his book, but Jack knew that he wouldn't mind being interrupted for such an occasion.*

"Regin... Ah, Doctor Baxter. I was wondering if you'd be so inclined to join Mr. Ilor, Myself and who-so-ever else wishes to join us, in answering to an invitation that has been offered to the Officer's and Crew of the Lady Washington, by none other than one of my dearest and kindest old friends, Miss Malaria.

Oh dear, I said that rather oddly didn't I? I am not quite aquainted with the name that she is presently known by. Last I saw her, she went by the name of Midnight, Miss Midnight Oasis. Though, yet it has been a rather long time since I've seen her last, so I'll take it upon myself and the Crew to address her by her present name... Miss 'Melaria'.

Now, Doctor... would you like to get into your best and accompany me? Whom ever so wishes to join us this evening at the dinner banquet is to meet us on the main road at 5 bells. I recommend dressing in the best dress coat an breeches taht you can find. Miss Melaria seems to have come by a large fortune over the past few years and I am afriad that she now recides within a well to do manor. Now, usually I would not ask it of you to dress in any particular fashion, but this is a special occasion of course. Therefore, it's all Dress Blues & Lace Me and Tarpualin Hats for the Crew until further notice. As for you, Doctor, might I recommend a nice vest, a fancy dress coat and a wide brimmed hat. You'd look absolutley fetching."

*Stopping only to catch a breath, Kurisutofa smiled at them and then went none but wide eyed.*

"Oh, what a fine kettle of fish... I've completely forgotten...

Miss Kale, would you be so kind as to join us for dinner at 6 bells?
Fetch what proper midshipman's dress attire you can find within the ship's slopchest. If not there, I'm sure that there should be a proper midshipman's dress uniform in my cabin tucked away in some old seachest from times long passed.

As for a tarpaulin hat, Miss Nyssa never wears hers, therefore you may have it. It's in perfect condition. Never been touched since the day I made it for her. The long black silk ribbon still gleams gold-gilt with the name 'Lady Washington' upon it. It would sit splendidly upon your fine locks, Miss Kale."

Destiny had been about to ring the ship's bells for lunch. As she slipped up the stairs in the hatchway, she couldn't help but stop and listen to the Captain say
Quote:
"Whom ever so wishes to join us this evening at the dinner banquet is to meet us on the main road at 5 bells."

Destiny put a hand to her chin and tilted her head sideways in thought. Hmmmmm, I wonder if the Captain would mind if I tagged along. It will be interesting to meet this lady friend of his. I'll just slip back along the corridor, and back to my quarters. The new cape and top I picked up in Toulon should be perfect.

Destiny turned about, and headed back for her quarters. Taking a quick sponge bath in a tin basin, she brushed out her hair till it shone with a glossy finish. Arraging her hair so it covered her ears, she swept the rest into a loose braid down her back. As she braided her long, honey-gold hair, she wove in soft black and white ribbons into the braid, both for decoration and protection.

Her hair finished, she began looking for just the right outfit to make a good impression on the Captain's friend. She quickly found the black, white, and red outfit she had been looking for. She slipped on the black silk top with the white lace ruffle and softly caressed the silk with her hand, still marveling at the fabric. Next, she pulled on a pair of the softest leather breeches she could find, dyed a shade of black. Through many belt loops , she threaded her velvety-smooth, embossed, midnight black leather belt with a large gold buckle. She sat down on her bunk, and reached underneath for her second pair of boots. As she pulled them out, she could see her face reflected in them. On her feet, she slid a pair of silk stockings on, and then pulled her boots on. Standing up, she felt almost dressed. However, she didnt' feel dresed without her back-slung short swords, and numerous hidded daggers. Cautiously, she slipped the sheathed daggers into all their hiding places. She wasn't sure if it was proper to wear swords to dinner, but she felt naked without them.

She stood back and looked herself over in the mirror. From head to toe, she presented a picture of sophistication and elegance, as well as a muted sense of deadliness. But there was one last thing missing.. her cape. Twisting around, she carefully untied the strings to her red silk-lined black cape, and in one swirling motion, settled the cape over her shoulders. Delicatly she the strings back, fastening the jeweled pin over the knot.

The pin was in the shape of a onyx raven over a torn heart that was bleeding rubies. It was composed of black onyx, ruby, and gold, small enough to hide from most, but yet distinctive enough to attract a small bit of attention, and enough to strike fear into the hearts of those who once knew who she was.

Now she felt fully dressed. With a turn and flourish of her cape, Destiny left her quarters and headed out the hatch, down the gangplank, and onto the side strees that would take her to the Main Road, intending to be there by the requested hour.

Her hair finally dry, she slipped into loose working clothes and took the stairs back into the kitchen. Seeing the dining table being set inside, she decided since it was a lovely night that they should dine outside facing the sea. Looking around for help she signaled two maids to collect the dinner ware as well as set the outter table. Picking out a white eyelet table cloth sewn from a ships sail, she unfurlled it onto the smaller table on the back patio. Looking off through the tops of trees she could see the sea peeking through their tops, waves softly rolling towards shore.

The sun was still strong in the sky, shade was needed. Pulling out a large parrisol she placed it in a stand carved from gnarled gold oak casting a shadow over a few of the chairs. Pulling a few more out to the patio she set them arround the table until it was cast in a cool shadow, the colors of the parisol livening up the pale china and cloth. Running a finger over a pale blue flower etched into the off-white china a memory of a face came to her.

...

It had been weeks since she had been coherent enough to even recognize where she was. When her eyes finally opened she was alone on a feathered bed covered in strange quilts, a wet cloth pressed to her forhead. Rolling to her side she saw a small bowl filled with broth, the china bowl was nothing like she had ever seen before; flawless with pale blue flowers etched into a pattern. Sipping some broth she could feel how weak her limbs had become, it was a struggle to sit up and sip soup. Exhausted she lay back down upon the matress.

Just before she drifted back off to sleep, she heard a door creak from across the room. Her eyes flashed open and she tried to sit up, but failed. A face came into her sight, it was kind and mildly handsom with soft whisps of hair out of place and a small trimmed beard upon his pointed chin.

You're awake, here, let me help you eat...

He lifted her, sliding an arm under her shoulders while he brought the soup closer to her. Dishing out small mouthfulls of soup he slowly fed her until the china bowl was empty. Gently laying her back down she tried to thank him, but drifted off to sleep before getting the chance. His face lingered behind her eyes with millions of questions she was too tired to try and answer.

...

Shaking herself back into reality, she took her hands off the plate she was holding, placing it back on the table. Going back into the kitchen she checked on the cook as well as the sun to see how much time was left in the day. It was almost time for her to get dressed and pick up the crew down on the beach.

Hurrying, she went into her small flower garden and quickly picked a few blue flowers to match the china. Finding a vase she arranged them and set the bouquette on the table. Dashing back up to her room, she took the brush in her hand again to work out fresh tagles and to dress for her dinner party.

*Jaden looked up in suprise at the Captain's addressing the Doctor.*

"Had the Captain just started to say the Doctor's first name?" she thought quickly to herself as she stood up in the Captain's presence. She had begun to believe that 'Baxter' was his last name due to the way everyone refered to him by it.

*She listened at the lucky invite the Doctor had received for the banquet that was soon to be hosted by Miss Melaria. What a celebration this would turn out to be for those attending from the crew. She was a tad jealous. Her mind began to think back to the last party she had attended, herself.

~~
She hadn't been to such a social engagement in many years. It sounded like the very thing her mother would have rushed her off in midday to get ready for, as suitors came to call there and she could hope to be rid of her obstinant child. However, her mother didn't have quite the control over Jaden as she had hoped for.
Instead of a dominate suitor who would put her in her place, she humiliated many of them. Those who were not of the pompous nobility or upperclass who asked her to dance and tried to court her; found rather than a fragile flower, they found a woman with brains: a dangerous combination in this day and age.
She was taught techniques that a young woman of the upper class should not have known: The locksmith's son she had courted by (after Jaden had made a point to turn every other suitor down), taught her lockpicking techniques and gave her the set of tools she protected most dearly. This knowledge was later used to slip away from her locked room the night before her own wedding to the same locksmith's son. She also used this ability again one other time. We'll not get into what all happened with the swordmaster's son when she courted him. Let us just say, while he is not dead, he walks with a considerable limp due to mistaking Jaden's sword skills he taught her. He never should have thought her bosom was anyone else's than her own; for a blade, no matter how small, can make an everlasting impression.
~~

As the Captain smiled at both the Doctor and Jaden, she dropped her head and took a small step backwards. Parties were, indeed, fun, but it was wrong to fantasize upon her going to this function. She was not of the crew and her fate had not yet been decided in regards to her staying aboard the ship.*

"Surely, I am not to be invit....." she had begun to think before the Captain began to speak again. It would have been far too forward for someone not of the crew to assume they would be invited.

*The mention of her name, however, made her snap her head back up and look squarely in the eye of the Captain. A wave of shock seemed to come over her as she heard him talking of sifting through old clothing and a hat that would look well on her. A somewhat blanketed puzzlement and slight joy crossed her face.*

"Has he made up his mind as to whether she was allowed to stay aboard the ship?" her mind raced as she looked around at herself. Almost as quickly as she had thought it, she began to blurt it out towards the Captain.

"Have you decided whether or not I should be allowed to stay aboard then, Captain?... I... I am willing to stay... of course," her fingers began to fidget terribly with the edge of her auburn locks. "But I had not heard what your take was, and... I have not tried to make myself at 'home' until I knew that I was, indeed, accepted and welcome aboard."

*She looked up to the Captain intently to hear his reply. Her heart sat lodged in her throat. Never had she felt such a feeling of anticipation as she awaited an answer from the Captain. Not noticing it herself, she stood rather close to the Doctor as she tried to bite back the grin that started to rise on her face.*

Syn glanced around, waiting for a response, only to see a bucket filled with water literally hurled at her through the window. She leaped to the side, Tuslo flapping into the air. "Oi! What the hell happened to just throwing water with the bucket? Ye didn't need to actually throw the entire bucket and try to kill me!" Grumbling to herself, she hurried to the next building that held promise. This time, instead of going to a window, she sat down on one of the steps leading to the house, waiting for a servant to leave so she could ask who lived in the house.

No servants seemed to be leaving yet, but that could change any moment now. She just folded her hands all prim and proper in her lap with a mocking air, Tuslo going back onto her shoulder and cleaning his feathers. "Ye think she lives here? I suppose she'll throw another bucket at me. Hopefully this one won't be full of water so it'll be lighter." She stared up at the sun, which was trying to shine through some clouds.

"That sounds like a splendid idea. I shall uncover what I have from the depths of my footlocker. I don't have a jacket, however. The only thing I've got is the heavy overcoat I wore upon my initial arrival aboard. I do however have white silk shirts and a vest, and some dark bottoms I could wear."

The doctor went off to prepare for the banquet.

*Calling after the good Doctor*

"No matter the attire, I'm sure you'll look fine."

*Before turning back around, he felt the presence of overjoyed eyes set upon him. Her words were the most exciting that he'd heard in quite sometime. Turning, he saw what he had expected.*

"Aye, lass. I've given your presence aboard some thought, and I have come to the conclusion that it would be for the best. You don't seem to terribley enthrawled with the thought of going home to a family, if that is infact your situation.

Therefore, I have decided taht you may stay aboard and we'll rate you into our books at a later time. For now, we'll rate you as a Surgeon's Mate... if that serves rightly."

Baxter nodded at the bit addressed to him then disappeared below to rummage through his footlocker and find appropriate attire for the evening.

It had been quite some time since Reginald had to attend a formal function. He always did have a small distaste for the pomp and circumstance that surrounded such affairs. However, the food was usually of the highest calibur, and Baxter would thus tolerate the ritual that accompanied it.

However, he was not quite sure he remembered the protocols and such to pass off as a gentleman as he has spent to much time with the "common folk" as his father would say.

After doing much work aboard the ship (And even more to make sure no one noticed that I was absent..), I decided to get ready for this fancy dinner. And incase my paranoid self was right, I decided to hide one of my daggers in one of my boots.

However, if my paranoid self was incorrect, I would be in trouble with the captain yet again...

So..I attempt to ease my paranoid thoughts out of my head..and I try to assume I am wrong..After all..Pirates go to fancy dinners that were arranged by sophisticated people all the time, right?

After that last thought sounded a wee bit off, I decide to just get ready to go to the dinner, and if any problems would arise, I would be ready..if not, well..I will TRY not to cause any problems, or to get myself in any trouble for that matter. xp (That includes not stealing from anyone..for now)

Cut-throat Kate

PostPosted: Thu Jun 15, 2006 5:32 am

Cut-throat Kate, female pirate and infamously unlucky omen, staggered around the little port, an almost-empty bottle clutched in one hand.

The crew aboard her last ship may have all been captured, and the one before that may have been killed in a sea battle, and then there was that freak tidal-wave before that...

...but no, she would not give up. The rumours that currently flew around the port whispered of a pirate ship by the name of The Lady Washington. There were murmurs that they allowed numerous women on board- an unusual trait, to be sure.

Although she didn't know when the ship would be nearing port, she was determined to present herself to the captian and crew as an eager ship-mate as soon as possible.

Yes, a nice little row-boat might help. Spying a man on the docks, lightly dozing next to a selection of the small vessels, she pulled out a couple of cold coins from within her pocket with which to barter...

...then thought better of it and pulled out her pistol.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 15, 2006 5:58 am

*If the look in her eyes seemed overjoyed before he accepted her presence aboard the ship, the look in her dark green orbs must have shown pure exhilaration at allowing her to stay.

Perhaps it was because she was to go to a party for the first time since she slipped away from her home and her pretentious and ostentatious mother (she often wondered how her father ever came to fall in love with her mother in the first place... she had her doubts about that.). She wouldn't have to put on aires as her mother had always insisted and instead, have simple, harmless fun for the first time in quite a while. While there was a large part of snobbery that happened at these events that caused her to hate them with a passion, there was the hope deep within her that the next time she was to attend a function such as this, she'd be free of the rules her mother set for her on how to speak, to whom she was allowed to speak, and so on and so forth.

Maybe it was because she was actually begining to feel accepted aboard this vessel, even when she had been so careless to attempt to rob it. Really, robbing from pirates. She must have been truely mad to do so. And to pilfer from the Doctor, no less. She had become careless in her manor of taking great care as she did her theivery. Did she want to be captured? Did she wish to stay aboard the ship from the very getgo? Only time and her staying aboard the ship would tell her the answers to those very questions.

She looked back at the Captain, as she swallowed, trying deperately to speak, for her acceptance aboard the ship had thouroughly captured her off guard.*

"Captain... I... I thank you." Her face flushed somewhat from his kindness and apprieciation of her willingness to stay aboard the ship. She dropped her head and let her auburn curls dangle about her face as she heard the rest of what the Captain had to say. She slowly raised her head and cocked it to the side as she carefully thought about what he said:

The Captain
"For now, we'll rate you as a Surgeon's Mate... if that serves rightly."

"Surgeon's Mate? Surely he must be joking...." she pondered quickly "I know basic bandage wrapping... unless he thinks that I should stay to clean the medical deck more often...." She stopped a moment and it seemed to click in her head.
"Ah... perhaps it has to do with the fact that I only really know the Doctor on the ship?... Some knowledge of the Doctor, I don't even know his full name..." She frowned slightly but tilted her head to the side as if she was thinking of the other side of things, "I tried to steal from the man and he's shown me nothing but kindness and respect, save for the initial finding of me crouched over his footlocker." her eyes looked past the Captain a moment to where the Doctor had walked up to the entry to the lower decks.
"He didn't seem to complain at all when the Captain suggested it. Maybe he agrees with it from some standpoint that I am unaware of..." She looked back to the Captain.

This whole thought process only took a minute or so to go over in her head, so there was only a brief moment to notice the very thoughts flooding her mind as she stood before the Captain, awaiting her answer.

"I do believe...." she began slowly, as if to choose just the right words, "Surgeon's Mate will be just fine... Captain. I hope that I will not let you, the Doctor, nor the crew down in any way possible, Sir." she smiled at the Captain with the hint of relief across her whole face.

Before she forgot of his offer, she thought to ask, for she did not have a hat of any sort.
"Might I ask, sir... where the Tarpualin hat may be?"

*Looking down at her clothing she looked back to the Captain once more, a bit shocked. Still clad in her damp, leather clothing, she was hardly in the propper attire for an event such as this. Scattered with her thoughts at the moment, she remembered some of the items she had snatched from Madame Mimfry's Misses Miftis. Jaden hadn't expected to get to use some of these items so soon but she would have to remember some of the ever so hated pomp and circumstance she was drilled with by her mother if she was to go to this event: First and foremost, to respect the host or hostess of the party, one must look proper. She'd need to also get a pitcher of water from the Galley before heading to the bunks. She didn't have much time to change and be ready but needed to do so rather quickly.

As she awaited an answer from the Captain, she ran up the steps to the doors that lead to the decks below.*

<< Aeoess, my character does not even know of your character's existance. Do not get confused between OOC chats and IC RP... If you can't separate the sarcasm and comedy of the OOC, from the storyline of the IC, you may come across many inconsistancies and problems with character interactions. And might I ask how you can be aboard the deck of the ship AND in the Tavern at the same time??
