Earthswordsman I miss summer vacation... One of the downsides of being a responsible adult. Couldn't you take a vacation during the summer? You know, be like "Yeah, I'm going to take a vacation. Here is my form."

Celestine Ravencroft Yeah, we have fall and spring semesters, and starting in 3rd grade you have to do state curriculum exams every year until you graduate. Then senior year it's the senior exit exams (a royal pain). There are semester finals at the end of both fall and spring in high school, and the spring semester finals can get you put into summer school if you don't get a decent passing grade (at least in Texas its like that.) College goes by spring and fall semesters too, with some lighter classes in summer. College students are usually out for the semester breaks several weeks before grades k-12. Gosh, that sounds rough. Standardized testing in Ontario isn't graded (except for math in grade 9, where the test counts as part of the exam) I don't know if it's just my school, but if someone has a grade above 35 but below 50, they take a remedial course to pass, so it's equivalent to summer school. I can only say this stuff for Ontario, since EQAO is exclusive to Ontario, as far as I know. How are state curriculum exams? I didn't get exams til high school, so I wouldn't know how it's like.

State Standards Testing varies from one grade to the next (it may vary by state as well.) You start out pretty basic with English and math in the early grades, but then you include writing, science, and social studies(history) exams as well the further you go in school. I remember in 4th grade I had the writing half of the reading/English test. Unless I'm completely off, the final writing standards test is in 11th grade. Now granted, I'm thinking in Texas terms here. I didn't go to school in Iowa for most of my primary and secondary education, so I'm still not sure how their testing differs. I know they try not to teach to the test as much up north. Schools get a lot (but not all) of their funding based on the over all result of the state curriculum test. There's a big emphasis down south on whether or not a school gets "exemplary" status, meaning they had super high over-all scores. It really puts too much pressure on the students. If they'd just teach the required curriculum and stop shoving the test down everyone's throats, I think they'd see better results. You can teach test skills without saying "test" all the time. Of course, having gone through the teacher training program, I've gotten to see the education system as a whole from a different perspective.

You know, be like "Yeah, I'm going to take a vacation. Here is my form." Yeah, I'm actually taking a week off in July, I meant more like getting 2-3 months off like back in the day. Definitely can't get away with that anymore. sweatdrop
