                                                                SLOANE MADDEN
THE ONLY TRUE WISDOM IS IN KNOWING YOU KNOW NOTHING.

The others? Sloane blinked, a little confused, but couldn't help eventually cracking a smile. If nothing else (though there was much else), Juno was interesting. Something told Sloane that if they continued getting to know each other, there would never be a dull moment with Juno--and certainly not a plain moment.

When Juno asked about Sloane's earlier disclaimer, the hostess shrugged her shoulders and absently inspected the dwindling contents of her mug. "Perhaps," she said calmly. "Or perhaps my subject was just so beautiful, there was no way I could fail." She took a sip of her coffee casually, as if she hadn't just made a pass at the girl. If Juno wasn't listening, she might even miss it.

Some of the club's customers were watching Sloane. Sloane was honestly surprised that she hadn't been bombarded by girls yet--not because she was full of herself and expected them to worship her, but just because of she typical make-up of the club's clientele. Most of them were completely opposite Juno where personality was concerned; even the shy ones were brave enough (and, perhaps, obsessed enough) to demand the hostesses' attentions. Yes, she had been fortunate to share these few, quiet moments with Juno, but Sloane sensed that they were about to be interrupted. Sloane sat up, collecting herself in preparation for her departure. "We're hosting a Halloween party tomorrow night," she said, looking at Juno. "A masquerade. There will be dancing, food, masks, a costume contest. You'll come, won't you?"

"W-what?" Juno squeaked, catching Sloane's casual words, her face practically in flames for how her cheeks were burning. She couldn't believe that Sloane had just said what she did, like absolutely could not believe it at all. Juno rubbed at her cheeks furiously trying to get the burning to go away, but finding herself widely unsuccessful. Juno shook her head, arguing with herself internally. Sloane couldn't heave meant what she said, there was no way that Sloane really meant that. Juno peaked at the girl through her hands, trying to see if Sloane would add anything else. But the beautiful hostess changed the topic, instead informing Juno about the masquerade party that the club would be throwing.

Juno did know about the party, these sort of large events were just the type of thing that Juno would avoid, the crowds were much to large, she couldn't find a quiet corner to work in like today. But Sloane was inviting her, in a way. Almost requesting hopefully that Juno would show up, and Juno had never been put in this situation. "Um.." Juno started shakily her stomach fluttering, absolutely filled with butterflies. "If you want me to, I will come." Juno admitted, that it was all on Sloane's word now. If the girl wanted her to come to the masquerade, Juno would show up without question.

(Awwww, you got rid of Vachina.)

Juno was putting the ball in Sloane's court, letting her decide whether Juno would attend the event or not. "You'll be there, then," Sloane said smoothly, finally rising. Turning to stand in front of Juno, Sloane casually leaned forward, her mouth inches from Juno's ear. "I'll be wearing a black mask with cutouts," she half-whispered. "Come and find me." She grabbed her mug from the table between the chairs, as if that had been the purpose of her gesture all along, then stood erect. Sloane gave Juno a half-salute as she began walking away. "Until tomorrow." And with that, she was on her way to the other customers.

(my fridge! It lives!)

Juno couldn't below how suave Sloane was being as if she didn't have a single ounce of doubt floating around in her head, she was so unlike Juno that the tall girl just found herself so overwhelmed and almost intimidated. She just didn't get how she could catch the attention of someone so amazing, and even now she was sure that she was getting a bit ahead of herself. Maybe Sloane was still being nice, all the hostess' were nice, but maybe not this nice. She looked up at Sloane, an almost dreamy gaze in her eyes as the woman closed, and trembled nervously when Sloane whispered in her ear, explaining how Juno would find her when the party came. "O-oh, ok." Juno said as Sloane walked away to continue her duty. "I'll be there." She promised, and stood, gathering her sketchbook, she noticed the swarm of girls that huddled around Sloane as soon as she was free, surprised that they had waited so long. She saw how some lingered to stare at her glare at her even. Juno swallowed heavily, and scuttled towards the door, exiting. Though she was running away from attention, one of her greatest fears she couldn't help but let out a whooping, giddy laugh.

She had to prepare, she knew she still had a day, but she had never been so excited for something before. She just couldn't wait.

---

Juno found herself pulling at the hem of her dress, she truly didn't remembering it being so short, just above the knees of her long legs. She had purchased thios dress to visit an art gallery that was showing her work one time, and it had been below her knees. That had also been 3 years ago, she had been 13, before her sudden growth spurt....her second growth spurt, that is. She should have tried the dress on before hand, she groaned, it was too late to change much now, she didn't have anything else prepared, and the party would be starting soon. She could see the line ahead, and gulping one final time she integrated herself into it, waiting for the doors to open and for the masquerade to begin...suddenly the line lurched forward, the doors opening before she was ready Juno found herself in the rush, trying to keep her balance as she moved with everyone glad she was wearing flats in the sea of girls who were packing hills and mask of their own that Juno had forgotten and probably wouldn't have worn anyway. She was sure she would fall if her vision was impaired by a mask.

At the soonest possible moment, she forced herself to the left, out of the line and into a familiar corner, as she caught her breath and started searching, she couldn't see much that was notable, within the sea of masked faces, but she was confident that perhaps Sloane would come to find her, after a while, she was sure that she was sticking out like a sore thumb.

                                                                SLOANE MADDEN
THE ONLY TRUE WISDOM IS IN KNOWING YOU KNOW NOTHING.

These events didn't typically hold Sloane's interest for too long. They were cool, maybe. The decorations were sleek and sophisticated, everyone was dressed fabulously, there was beautiful music and delicious food and enough excitement to last the entire week. But nothing was thrilling about it for Sloane. At the end of the day, nothing succeeded in getting her adrenaline pumping, in testing her, in challenging her, and she was left only with childhood memories of entertaining guests at the events thrown by her socialite parents. If she wanted to drown herself in cocktails and indulge in the latest gossip, she could simply go home. But she was here because it was her job, and because it was easy.

The mask obscured her identity, but she was, for the most part, recognizable. She was dressed in a vaguely militaristic, black and white suit and black heels. Her hair was pulled back into a neat, low bun, with clean, voluminous finger waves lining the left side of her face. Ten minutes into the party, and Sloane was already bored. Some of her usual fans had swarmed her, and they were talking to her about schoolwork. Sloane was listening, reacting, contributing. Then one of them said, face twisted into an unattractive, smug grin, "Look at her. Must not've gotten the memo about this being a masquerade. How embarrassing." Sloane followed the girl's gaze and found a very familiar face.

Another girl piped in about how she would leave and hide under a rock for an eternity in shame if she had made the same faux pas, and blah blah blah... Sloane wasn't listening anymore. "Excuse me, ladies," she interrupted, still focused on Juno as she broke away from the group of now confused, annoyed girls. Sloane's heels clicked against the tile as she navigated the stream of guests between herself and Juno. When she finally reached the artist, she grinned and slipped her hands into her pockets. "I love your mask. Very... minimalist," she joked.

Juno turned her head towards the sound of a voice addressing her very obviously, and smiled in relief the skin around her eyes wrinkling gently as she took int he appearance of who could only be Sloane making her presence known. Juno looked first at the mask committing it to memory now, because when she had had it described to her the day before she would be lying if she said that she had a very clear picture in her mind, but now it all made sense, and she was glad for the style of mask Sloane had decided to wear, it was very easy to make out her face, and place it onto the suit that Sloane was wearing. She looked marvelously masculine in her attire, and Juno absolutely loved her look, and she was wearing hills, the added boost making her almost equal to Juno in height. Juno was surprised that the girl could manage to walk around in those death traps, but then again, she supposed she really wasn't too surprised. Sloane seemed to just be perfect like that.

"I didn't have a mask, surprisingly, it not one of the things I just have laying around." Juno replied, deciding not to mention that she never planned on showing up for this party and hadn't had the chance to go to one of the stands around campus that had been selling mask expressly for the event, before they closed.

"You look....stunning" Juno complimented, blushing, her freckled face darkening. She didn't know where the compliment had come from, it wasn't really like her, but then again, face to face conversation wasn't something she did. Ever

THE ONLY TRUE WISDOM IS IN KNOWING YOU KNOW NOTHING.

"No?" Sloane grinned, eyebrows raising in mock surprise. "I've got at least a dozen." She chuckled, passing the comment off as a joke. But at its core, it wasn't.

Juno complimented Sloane's appearance and blushed perhaps more than Sloane had ever seen a girl blush before. Sloane indulged in a leisurely once-over of Juno's appearance and grinned a softer, warmer grin. "As do you," she said honestly. The dress was shorter than Sloane would have expected, given Juno's modesty--and, the hostess had to admit, Juno was quite a bit taller than Sloane had realized. But she saw only positives in all of these observations.

                                                                "Do you dance, Juno?"

Juno raised her eyes at Sloane's comment, but let it go. She wondered what she meant truly by "mask". Sloane seemed liked a very complex woman, Juno would definitely agree that she was a lot more complex than herself. Even now Juno wasn't sure of the woman's motives, she was being super nice, yes. But she had to want something right? There had to be something that she expected from all of this, no one behaved in this way with no end goal in mind, and Juno still refused to believe that Sloane, was genuinely so interested in her that this was all for the sake of friendship. At least not completely.

But Juno was so confused she didn't know what to think, especially when Sloane returned her compliment, and Juno couldn't read even a hint of a fib in her words, the tall freckled girl again found herself blushing beet red, looking down at the ground completely losing her ability to make eye contact with Sloane. "T-thank you." She coughed, Still looking off to the side when Sloane asked her if she danced. Juno wrung her hands together nervously. "I've taken a few classes." She admitted, something her parents had done to try and get her to open up. "I can hold a rhythm." She added, she didn't know if that would be enough.

Part of her mind scolded her for being so timid about things, she was 16 for Christ sake, there was no way Sloane could expect some intricate dance routine out of her.

Sloane grinned broadly and chuckled. "Then you're already more of a dancer than most of the girls here," she replied quietly, but playfully, as if it was a secret the two of them alone now shared. Sloane turned briefly to the dance floor, which wasn't seeing too much action just yet. Guests were still arriving, interacting with the hostesses, chatting away about nothing. Soon, though, Sloane knew, it would be packed. Returning her focus to Juno, she extended her hand and asked, "Would you do me the honor of dancing with me?"

Juno swallowed heavily, seeming to pale just a little at the request, she couldn't believe that it was being made, that for whatever reason, Sloane wanted to dance with her, and she was sincerely thinking about bitching out, not even just a little, she was honestly about to turn tail and run she was so nervous. But all she could think about is how bad she would look, running away from Sloane, in front of all the girls that were watching them like hawks. She wouldn't be able to live on this campus anymore, their words would torment her until graduation. "Okay." She whispered, but she didn't move, she seemed almost frozen.

Hopefully she would feel more comfortable. As she turned partially toward the dance floor, Sloane watched Juno curiously and chuckled. She withdrew her hand. "You know, you can refuse, if you want," she said lighteheartedly. "It'll sting, but I know I'm out of my league here, trying to woo a master artist. I'll recover. Eventually."

"I know I could." Juno admitted, her eyes still tracking the floor as if there was another party going down on the marble.
"But I really....can't..." Juno added, managing to look up at Sloane hesitantly. "I don't think I could forgive myself if said no." Juno said softly. She wasn't going to add that she had dreamed about being placed in a similar scenario on multiple occasions, because she knew that there was absolutely no way to say that without making it awkward.

"So let's dance, stop making me more nervous than I already am."

Juno wouldn't be able to forgive herself? Admittedly, that was an answer Sloane hadn't been expecting, and she watched the girl curiously with slightly raised eyebrows. But when Juno asked Sloane to stop making her more nervous, Sloane couldn't help chuckling. "Of course. Let's go." Without waiting for further movement on Juno's end, Sloane gently took her hand and tugged her toward the dance floor. Once there, she immediately took the lead and wrapped an arm around Juno's waist. Not too high, not too low, and not too tightly. Yet. The perfect gentlewoman. "Just follow my lead," she said as she followed the motions of the dance, some kind of waltz, and did her best to guide Juno's movements with gentle, discrete nudges and head gestures.

Juno released a deep breath that she didn't even know she had been holding when Sloane gripped her hand, and she allowed her self to be lead, pulled even to the dance floor, keep her eyes down onto the back of the woman in front of her who was leading her, knowing that if she met the gazes of the many masked faces that were watching her that she would lose her nerve, though she almost lost her nerve anyway, when Sloane stopped them and wrapped a strong arm around her waist, Juno let out a little squeak one that was far to feminine for someone of her size, and she blushed furiously, as she tried to figure out what to do with her free hand, her mind drawing all sorts of blanks. She finally managed to place it on Sloane's back, finding it too hard to look into the girls eyes, even as she looked down at her face as they danced, Juno true to her word has taken classes so she was able to keep up fairly decently. "I have a question..." Juno asked as they moved, looking off to the side now.

"Why all this? I just don't get it, no one has ever been so nice to me before."

(Sorry! School and work have left me exhausted and with little free time this week.)

Internally, Sloane couldn't help being amused by Juno's reactions. She found the blush adorable, the squeak endearing, the hesitance to assume the position of the dance enjoyable. Externally, Sloane remained calm and collected. Aside from the smirk playing at the corners of her painted lips, Sloane didn't react. She didn't want Juno to feel any more embarrassed than she apparently already did.

Then Juno said she had a question: why? Sloane's brows rose as she studied Juno's face, which was now turned away from her. "What do you mean?" she asked. But she knew. She knew what Juno was alluding to. Focusing her own gaze elsewhere, Sloane considered the question for a moment. "Perhaps I see something in you that others are too blind to see," she offered. "A kindred spirit."
