She grumbled something uncomplimentary and slowed to a walk, heading back to the house, not pleased.

Eric loped to the car, where Antino was waiting at the backseat door. It was swiftly opened so that he could hop in.
"Will the lady be coming?"
He shifted in the backseat, the windows tinted so heavily that no one could see in them. "No, I believe she is walking."
"You are comfortable she will come back?"
"Yes. I do not like it, it is against every fiber of my being. But she needs it, so I must do my best to provide."
Antonio smiled and slipped into the driver's seat. "I thought perhaps you had seen the light. Women are very delicate creatures."
"Indeed they are. I am learning new things every second I am with her, and she is not even yet of age."
"Maria will be pleased to know you are learning something." Antonio teased lightly. "Perhaps you'll have to tell her when you wake up this evening."
Eric smiled faintly, "I may just."

She took her sweet time coming back, but she did finally, climbing right back into the window she had slipped out of, just past sunrise, not bothering to tell anyone she was back. she closed and locked the window, and with the door still barricaded, flopped face first onto the bed.

Eric went down to his chambers and settled in for the day, making the hole and closing himself up as his body shut down for rest.
Maria shook her head after Antonio got back and relayed the story to her. "That man...That child's been scared to death and all alone most of her life. Why, if he weren't resting, I'd got down there and give him a piece of my mind..."
Antonio had to laugh at his wife. "My darling, I do not think that would do him any good. He must learn these things the hard way, just as every other man must."
"I know you're right...but...I just hate to seem them both upset. I think I'll take her up some milk and cookies. Maybe that'll make her feel a little more welcome." Maria set about gathering the tray and cookies, along with a couple of mugs, milk, and some cocoa powder. Up the stairs to Skunk's room she went, knocking on the door. "Dear, it's Maria. I brought you some milk and cookies, in case you're hungry."

"Huh?" she called out, confused. Why was the woman being nice, after how horrible she had been to her? It was almost like... no. she couldn't afford to think of anyone else as family, the woman was too nice to die, and another betrayal.... Skunk didn't think she could survive being hurt so badly again. So what was he doing, getting close to anyone? She shuddered, hating how much she wanted to sob into Maria, to cling to her, to take comfort. She hated how weak she felt. The weak her got walked all over and hurt. She had to be strong. Strong and alone. She tried very hard to tell herself that.

"Why?" she called through the door, trying very hard not to go running for the woman. She sat up, hugging her arms.

"Because I want to make sure you're ok. I know it's rough starting out in a new place, and doubly rough here. I wasn't always a housekeeper here. So I have an idea of just how rough it can be."

She started moving the furniture with small grunts. Without the adrenaline it all felt ten times heavier.
