There aren't many shows I prefer to watch subbed. All of these anti-dub fanatics try so hard to be hardcore, but they're mostly just way behind the times. The really crappy dubs are all pretty much over 10 years old. Or they're children's shows that I don't give a flying ******** about, anyways. Ever since anime went mainstream (Yes, it kinda is.), they've done a fairly decent job with most English castings.

And Vic Mignogna is definitely awesome. He makes me want to cry so bad the way he yells, "Give him back! He's my little brother! He's all I have left!"

It's really interesting to watch movies and all in their original language only if you can UNDERSTAND the native tongue. For anime, I'd rather go for the dub unless it's extremely crappy.

It just depends on who is doing the voices. Whats-her-name, Wendee Lee I think, goes back and forth between being good and bad depending on the character. Stepven Blum is pretty much always "that guy" which again, depends on the character type.

And I always like hearing Norio Wakamoto regardless of role. Does every villain well, and every comedy better.

I don't know, I don't really get hung up on it either way. It's been a long time since I heard a really bad dub, but there does seem to be one or two characters in a show that are never done well. I guess it comes with having such a small stable of voice actors that every company goes with. Or just bad direction.

Not familiar with that name, but I do know of a few VA's that sound the same in damned near every role they do. Scoot McNeil, for instance. I remember when Kouga made his first appearance on Inu Yasha, I was like "Hey... isn't that Duo Maxwell?" Of course, I didn't realize he voiced Hohenheim for FMA until I looked up his name because I couldn't remember it. But now that I think about it, it does sound typically gruff Scott McNeil. I must not have been paying attention.

Yeah, there's always a few characters. But they seem to be mostly minor roles, so it doesn't bother me much. I remember some girl bitching about how the annoying dub voice for Van Argeno completely ruined Blood+. Who the hell even cares about that guy to begin with? And besides, he's not really supposed to be likable, so I don't think an obnoxious voice ruins the character. I thought it was more annoying how every guy in the Japanese version had a voice like Michael Clarke Duncan. Kinda like how every girl in Sailor Moon sounds like Minnie Mouse - and SM really did have a bad dub in later seasons. But I still preferred it to the squeaky Japanese voices. Do 15-year-old girls really sound like that in Japan? Because they sure as hell don't here.

Spike Spiegel/Shishio Makoto/Orochimaru/Eikichi Onizuka/Mugen from Samurai Champloo/Tom from Toonami and a host of other characters.

I hadn't watched a dub in so long that when I popped Baccano! into my DVD player, I couldn't recognize a single person. Good acting though, I liked the fact that American actually had accents to their voices. I generally prefer dubs, but I have little in the way of impulse control when it comes to anime (plus, a good chunk of it seemingly never comes over here) so I watch a lot of subs. If I like it, I generally try and buy it when it gets stateside though.

At best I'll watch maybe one or two shows a year, so going out of my way to see dubs is hardly ever worth it. And OVAs and movies tend to not get ported over, so I don't even bother.

Yeah, Steven Blum gets to be "that cool guy" in every cartoon/anime ever. He's got a good voice, but little range. Which works for him, I guess.

I don't mind when some of the one-off characters sound bad, but it's when anyone has a recurring role of any kind that I get annoyed. A bad act once you can ignore pretty easily, but I hate being reminded of it.

And, well, it depends. Your typical "girly" Japanese teenaged girl probably does sound like that, but only because they're going out of their way to try to look cute. The girls I knew sure as hell didn't, but they weren't stupid either.

Then again, on Japanese television everyone has a really annoying voice so maybe it is just them.

I think Brian Drummond is a pretty consistent VA and one of my favorites.

Ugh. Went to the gas station today and somehow spilled gasoline all over myself. wtfman. I am not kidding. I did not pull the nozzle out at all. I was trying to put that stupid lock on and somehow it came out. alsmlkdsmclwkdf. ):<<<<

Crap. Fires in Leona Valley. I love Leona Valley so much. I hope they're okay. It's such a quaint town filled with lots of country hills and shrubbery. ): Plus it's near where I live. *gulp*

Brett Weaver, Spike Spencer, Crispin Freeman are three of the names I used to follow.

Brett does your crazy energetic over the top types. Gai Daigoji in Nadesico, Carrot Glace in Sorceror Hunters, Nabeshin in Excel Saga...

Spike is your "but I don't WANNA be the protagonist" protagonist. Shinji in Evangelion, Akito in Nadesico, Maki in Bubblegum Crisis...

Crispin does... well, everything stoic. Zelgadis in Slayers, Touga in Utena, Tsume in Wolf's Rain, Kyon in Haruhi Suzumiya...

Of the three I've only met two. Brett is as humorous as the characters he plays and spent a lot of time just hanging out with fans. Crispin spent a lot of time talking with fans about inspirations and influence. That guy has some amazing charisma.

Vic is also very friendly. At Youmacon '05 the band "The Spoony Bards" were set up in the lobby taking requests and playing during the entire con. At one point Vic joined in and played/sang Billy Joel's 'Piano Man'.

I think I honestly prefer voice actors to most live action actors. Don't know why, though. Anyway, that's my contribution to the topic. User Image

Oh, no wonder. Kenshin is the only one of those shows I liked, and I was never very religious about watching it.

That's kinda what I was thinking about the Japanese schoolgirl thing. I don't know why the hell that would be considered "cute," but then, we've already established the Japanese are crazy.

I don't know if I even watch that many shows a year. It's more like I don't waste time seeking out subs. I only like a handful of shows that do get dubbed, so I don't really feel the desire to sift through the massive piles of s**t that don't get brought over to find the one or two gems that didn't.

And Haji. heart You know, I wish John Truitt actually did more VA work. I don't think he's ever done anything but Ghaleon for the Lunar series, but I always thought he had an awesome voice. And his outtakes were some of the funniest.

And I hear that a lot, about certain VA's being very friendly and the like. But I've never even been to a con, so... I think I may have liked to when I was in high school, but now I think I'd just be uncomfortable around all of the weirder fans. I'm not even talking about cosplayers - that looks fun as hell. But like, these people that can't seem to grasp that, cool as x series is, it isn't reality - yeah, they scare me.

Apparently Crispin does a series of lectures on themythology of anime, too. Looks interesting.

It depends, there are a lot of niche series that are really good but just don't get dubbed because they don't have appeal in the west. They tend to be what I follow lately, so if I don't watch them subbed I'll probably never see them. There isn't much of a market for shows about microbiology and economical marketing.

But I guess I watch shows like Highschool of the Dead and stuff too, so whatever.

More than anything I get really bummed out when I can't find translations of games or books I want to read. Or when they get licensed but I just can't find the damned things.

I always remember his death scene outtakes because he kept drinking milk and it kept ******** with him. I haven't even played the game in years but I always remember that.

And cons can be fun, but you don't really run into those kinds of people there. They tend to prefer to stay on the internet if anything. Really the reason not to go is the (literal) unwashed masses, and over excited tweens and such. The last con I went to was a huge bummer because while it was open after midnight, there was literally nothing to do because 90% of everyone had gone home. No late night movies, room parties, games, panels, or much of anything. And it's really hard to get excited for a dance going on when all the girls are about 16.

Coincidentally, FUNimation just put up a survey to find out what their customers (current and potential) actually want in their releases. It's questions about boxsets, DVD extras, included merch, Blu-Ray releases, and the like.

Haha. Yeah that. Maybe that's why he only shows up on Vic Ireland series. Why would you drink milk during voice-overs? Not the best for your voice. Unless he was doing it so he sounded more disgusting and gurgly.

I have a very low tolerance for screaming tween girls. Probably because I never ever went through that phase. Have some godamned self-respect. And if you can afford to go to a con, I'm pretty sure you can afford to bathe, too.

Yeah, it was his death scene. But I think he kept gagging, so whenever he would start again he would have to drink more milk.

And taking that survey just made me think of how good some dub releases are, and how terrible others are. I remember His and Her Circumstances actually being a pretty good release because it had a ton of interviews and notes and stuff. And people always bring up the Berserk outtakes.

I really hate it when I get a DVD of a show that I like and there is stuff cut out, or just not much there besides bare bones episodes. Then again, I'm one of those dudes who loves listening to commentary.

The extras are generally why I buy series. In most cases I've already seen a given series (or movie), so if the DVD release just has episodes, I can't really "justify" it to myself.

And the commentaries can be hilarious. For example, the ones for Najica: Blitz Tactics; the cast was either hopped up on energy drinks (ladies), or drunk (guys).
