The next booth was far more satisfying to Coralie's way of thinking. The little kissy-face ghost was adorable and the sort of thing that she could keep forever and ever. Smiling, she put it back into the bucket she held and curled her tail about happily.
So many raisins. Well, Adelinde thought as she thanked the demon passing them out, at least they're safe enough to feed to some of my pets. And the little fuzzballs would probably enjoy the un-looked for treat.
Given that she had a fair haul of goodies as well as two new friends, Ashlynn knew that she really couldn't complain when she was given a less than optimal treat. Still. That didn't stop her from fantasizing about finding out who was supplying the creepy turnips and dropping them off of a tall building.
Zahneel hadn't really been trying to win at Ring Toss. She'd just been playing and having fun. And when the cotton candy cone was handed to her, her eyes went wide. It was so pretty. And sugary. So very sugary. She hadn't meant to eat it as quickly as she had. But the sweet scent had been too much to resist.
Wrinkling her nose a little as she examined the gummie she'd just been given, Binhdi thought that she'd never seen anything so icky. Sure, it was meant to be a gummie poo. Ha. Ha. Ha. So funny. Much laugh. But the deep red color made her think of blood and the idea of eating anything that looked so much like congealed blood was more than a little horrifying. Maybe she could find a kid along the way to pass it off to.
People seemed to like giving Gilby raisins. That was okay because Gilby like to get raisins. They'd already opened one of the boxes and were munching away happily. They could see their Mommas a little ahead, walking and talking. And that was good too. As they trundled along behind, the tiniest hint of movement near their feet caught their attention. Jumping back a little, Gilby saw a smiling pumpkaa and smiled back.
"Oh hello! I didn't kick you, did I?"
The pumpkaa surely would be smiling so widely if they had. Still smiling, Gilby picked it up and ran to show their Mommas the new friend they'd made.
The next game booth, Hamish has done a little better. The raisins were accepted with a smile. He was aware of Prague in the background, keping a watchful eye on him. And as he was turning to head back to her, the demon at the booth stopped him.
"Here now, young 'un! Don't forget this!"
He handed Hamish a beautiful, orange cat plush, prompting the biggest smile yet of the evening. Hugging the plush tightly, the little hybrid thanked the demon and ran to show Prague the gift.

Piper was enjoying the festivities in the area with her mother. Rosali had planned the trip so that she could see her other two sons at the same time that Piper could treat-or-treat without having to worry about the fact she was a hybrid. Asphodels Gardens was by far the best place for her to grow and learn to accept herself, though she already had a considerable amount of acceptance for herself. It also gave her a chance to check out the Academy as a possible place to send Piper to get her education.
They ended up stopped at a booth where you could sit down and create your own paper ghost. Piper took her time trying to get the face just right and was proud to show it off to her mother when she was done. "Isn't it cuuute?" Her Mom laughed and agreed, quite proud of the little Paper ghost her daughter had created.
Some might thinking being a senior meant you were too old for Haunted Hallows, but Conan could beg to differ. Any day that allowed you to dress up for fun and go get some free candy was a good day in his book. He'd probably be celebrating well into his later years in life. Plus, since you got to dress up and wear a mask, you could hide who you were while doing so! Which meant even when he did become famous, he'd still be able to participate!
He was dressed as a fancy vampire, a mask covering his eyes and a cape along his back. Did he mention how annoying it was to wear a cape with wings? He kept them neatly folded on his back. The rest of his costume involved a neatly tailored suit and some fake blood here and there.
He happily picked up a pumpkin and dove into the crowd for, hopefully, some treats.
Quilo smiled when Tarin squeezed his hand. What was she doing that for? He squeezed her hand back, but it was a trembly one. He was feeling very giggly right now.
Something moved in the grimy shadows of the kitchen, leaning out from a cabinet and holding a bowl. "Oo!" The bowl was full of something with an organic texture, glistening moistly in the light. He loved the texture. Someone had taken a lot of time and trouble with this place. But after Tarin's negative experience, he didn't bother reaching his hand into the bowl. He just admired the slime from a distance. "What's it made out of?" he asked.
The shadowy, almost skeletal figure that held the bowl laughed. It sounded like walnuts being scraped against a blackboard. Quilo saluted. Point taken! But as he turned to go, he felt something heavy land in his bucket. He snuck a peek. Candy corn! And the good stuff, too! He turned to talk to the shadowy figure, but they had retreated back to the cabinet.
Quilo shrugged and lead the girls out of the room. A dark corridor yawned in front of them, with a door in front of them and a staircase to the right. "Which way do we go?" he whispered to Tarin.
"Yeah, must be," Sara said. She couldn't imagine what Maria could possibly be caught up doing, and frankly she was starting to doubt their friend would show up to the festival at all. She felt her heart strain at the thought. She had so wanted to get together with her friends this evening, spend the evening with them...share treats, hold hands...
This was her last throw. She picked up the ball and bounced it in her hand. Right. One last throw. She carefully took aim and threw the ball. A smile came to her face as she hit the bottles and knocked them over. The game master smiled at her and handed her a stuffed vespercat and a handful of candy.
"Thank yah!" she said. She turned to Neptune. "Ah think Ah'm just about ready to move on, whaddya think? 'Cause Ah kahnda think it's tahm we went back and looked fer Maria. Ah'm getting kahnda worried about her."
Ustule was getting tired. The night was getting later and later and the crowds were getting thicker. She had never been much of an extrovert. She much preferred small groups of people to large crowds, and it had become quite the crowd by this point. And poor Sphery back home had probably lost her leg again or something, and would need Ustule's needle to re-attach it. She looked again at her bucket. Yes, she had a good variety of treats. She decided that she would get one more treat, go home, hang the lantern in her window, and get some rest. It had been a very good night.
She headed for the entrance to the park, dodging the legs of Nightmares and familiars alike. When she reached the entrance, she held out her bucket to the Imp on duty. "Trick-or-treat?" she said.
The Imp blinked at her. "Leaving so soon?" she asked.
Ustule looked around her and nodded. "Eet ees getting late. Eet ees pest my bedtime."
The Imp smiled and tossed her a pretty plastic bracelet. "Okay, hon. Happy Haunted Hallows, sweetie!"
Ustule didn't like being called a "sweetie," not even by an Imp, but she smiled and waved. "Good night!" she said, and started back for home.
He couldn't tell what the girl's face was like behind her mask, but he assumed that she didn't mind him mentioning her mutation. He knew he wasn't supposed to mention it to people, since sometimes they got kind of hurt about it. He knew he did, sometimes. But he couldn't help himself--it was another mutant! Another Chimera! Dad gave him a look as if to say "What did I tell you, people around here are different!" He hugged his dad's arm and looked over at the girl again. Her tails--tails! Multiple!--were swishing back and forth, but he didn't comment on those.
"My name's Xenophon, but you can call me Xeno. I was, um, trick-or-treating with my dad." He gently tugged his father's arm as if to show off an unusual pet. "But, um, if you have to stay with your caretaker..." He looked up at Jurvik again.
His father squeezed his hand. "I'll talk to the caretaker about it." He released his son's hand and squeezed through the moving crowd to the caretaker to have a word.
"If she and Dad say yes, then we'd love to go trick-or-treating with you, Eilwen!" Xeno said. "I'm sure it'll be fine."
Batholith looked his friend over. Was he a... "Nice pumpkin costume, Foras! You look awesome." And he did. Cute little kid, and really creative, too. He wondered how Foras's artwork was going. He hadn't asked to see it in a while. Maybe he should--or maybe not, didn't artists get super sensitive about that sort of thing? Heck if he knew. He looked over Foras's bucket. It looked like he was getting a fairly good selection of treats. Bath hoped he could increase that number. What better way to spend Haunted Hallows then giving a kid candy until they--preferably metaphorically--exploded?
"Would you like some help getting candy and treats and stuff?" Bath asked. "Because there's nothing much I'd like for myself." He looked over the dart game. How much more difficult was a dart than a knife? He could totally hit a good target with that.
Something rubbed against his calves. He looked down to see a rather ratty-looking vespercat twining around his legs. He sighed and shooed it away with a free hand. "Go on with you." But the ragged stray just responded by rubbing its chin against his shin. "No, shoo," he said.
The cat looked up at him. He had a sinking feeling that it was not going to leave.
Leopleuradon
Bath's going to keep the cat, but he's going to give any treats or plushies he collects to Foras.
Things were getting off to a banging start, then! It was so nice to have a break from homework and schoolwork. But as all students did when they were on break from school, the conversation very quickly moved in that inevitable direction. "What electives do you want to take?" Eidil asked. "I was thinking care for magical creatures and dance. What about you?"
Cal made a face. "Herbalism was going to be on my list, but dancing's not really my thing."
"Care for magical creatures, then. Come on, Cal, you've gotta take it--know thy enemy and all that!" She bumped her friend affectionately on the arm. "Maybe you'll even fall in love with animals someday."
Cal snorted. "Fat chance of that! I sold my soul to plants ages ago."
"Fair enough." Eidil held out her bucket. "Trick or treat!" She giggled when the grown-up dropped what looked like a turd in her bucket. She picked it up gently. No, it wasn't a turd. So was it...? She took a bite. "It's chocolate! Of course!" She took bites off of the rest and giggled again, this time at the look on Cal's face. "It's actually really yummy! Try it!"
While under the watchful eye of caretakers Jezebeth was attending the event with her best friend, Enoukn. In her left hand she held her pumpkin bucket and in her right hand she held Enoukn's hand. She had dressed up like a super hero. Mask, cape, tights, pink skirt, and everything to make an adorable girly super hero. The logo on the front of her shirt was for recycling, and if anyone asked she was a hero for the environment! Long live the wildlife!
She passed by a gaming booth and took aim with a water gun to knock down some bottles. In the end she got to choose a plushie to take home with her, and the booth owner also stuck another treat into her bucket. She smiled and picked out one of the little bat plushies.
"It's so fluffy~" She had to stick it into her bucket so she could free up her hand for Enoukn to hold again.
Enoukn was excited to be out and about with Jezebeth and the caretakers. He himself had dressed up like a super hero too, but his outfit was all dark greens and browns. His emblem was a tree - because you know, protector of nature and all that! Admittedly Jezebeth's costume was way cooler, but Enoukn was just more focused on having a friend along.
He stopped by the same gaming booth that she had and when she let go of his hand he too tried a hand at the game to see if he could do well. He placed his bucket next to his hoofs and did his best. He ended up with a treat for trying at least! But oh well - Jezebeth was happy so he was happy.
Putting his candy in the bucket he picked it back up and quickly went off with Jezebeth to see what she wanted to do next.
Eilwen was stoked to have met another mutant Chimera, he was very friendly too! And he seemed to have a nice dad. She was a bit puzzled as to why his father was a Geist, but she didn't feel the need to mention that or ask any questions about it. "Xeno it is, that's a cool name!" She smiled and her tails continued to swing back and forth behind her. This was a chance for her to make a friend! Sure, kids at the academy weren't so bad, but she was too shy to approach most of them...
"I can't imagine a reason she'd say no for!" She smiled and waited with the other chimera boy for them to get the go ahead to trick or treat together. She really didn't think the caretaker would mind. With everyone out and about for the Holiday groups of people were already meshing together. She could imagine it'd be easy to get lost if one wasn't careful.
"Can I ask you where you go to school? I haven't seen you around the Academy." She was hoping she wasn't prying too much, but she wanted to talk!
"Thank you! I made it by myself, mostly. I had some help!" Foras was crazy stoked to have run into Batholith, he was his favorite adult (or sort of, mostly, soonish an adult). Bath had been there for Foras when things had gotten a little crazy around the academy. Thankfully things had settled down since then. At the mention of Bath helping him get treats his eyes went wide and he smiled brightly.
"You'd do that for me?!" He was so excited for the potential to get some more treats. He'd get a lot on his own, but he'd get double the amount if Batholith helped him! He was distracted from the thought when he noticed the Vespercat down by Batholith feet. He let out a small laugh as the other hybrid tried to shoo him away.
"I think they like you!" Foras bent down to give the little Vespercat a pat on it's small head. It was a cute little familiar and it seemed like it'd be sticking to Batholith for a while now.
