~~Melody~~

She allowed herself a few moments of his comfort before pushing away shakily and managing a weak smile. "I haven't slept at all, I'm afraid... I was up all night preparing him for..." Unable to finish she nodded toward Zek's body. "If I'm to be in any shape for the ceremony I should at least try to get some rest." She stood on tip-toes and brushed a kiss on the Teru's cheek. "Thank you," she whispered, before pulling back and starting out of the room. She paused to give him a longing look once more before wearily trudging back to her room. Melody wished that she could have done more for him, but she really was at her limit. Her last thoughts before her head hit the pillow were of her resolve to make it up to Gannon once she could think clearly. He's always been there... always... so just this once... if he'll let me... Melody couldn't even finish that thought before the dark oblivion of unconsciousness claimed her.

Gannon… User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

He watched as the woman left, feeling a pang of regret for letting her leave. He knew that anything he was feeling for the loss of their friend, she was feeling too, if not more so. Still, she needed her rest after all she had already done, and there were other things that needed his attention. Hikari should have still been in the clinic with Miko, but he doubted that would still be the case if he didn't hurry back.

With one last look back to Zek's body, the Teru left the room. Making his way to the Temple door, he spotted Ishira leaving another room. The other Teru seemed pretty worse for wear. Not surprising, considering... Gannon gave the other Teru a nod and waited at the door for him.

Rhaplanca lethargically crawled back into her bed as Ishira left the room. No sooner did she lay her head down did she plummet back into unconsciousness to be plagued by restless slumber. Nightmares came almost immediately and she would succumb to tossing and turning frequently.

Ishira felt a pang of guilt knowing the emotion state of the reyvateil but there were other matters to attend to and he knew in his heart that his presence would do little to placate Rhaplanca while she slept. He gingerly shut the door behind him and as he made his way down the hall toward the mourning room, eyes fixed to the ground as he fretted over the seemingly withered connection between him and Rhaplanca, he eventually caught movement ahead of him and looked up. As his gaze met Gannon's the other Teru gave a nod of acknowlegment. Ishira returned the gesture and cleared his throat softly in an attempt to break the air of the somber situation.
"I apologize for the late rise," he began, taking in the site of the worn Teru in front of him. It looked as if centuries had passed since he last rested but Ishira did not point it out, "The blessing and prayer will take me a little while," he said as he stopped beside Gannon but keep his gaze forward towards the room, Zek's body lain on the stone inside. It seems that someone, Melody he guessed, had already cleaned and prepared the man, "Take that time for yourself, a spirit does no good with the able loitering," then Ishira lifted his hand over Gannon's shoulder, pausing for a moment, then committing to lightly clap his hand down on Gannon's shoulder before stepping into the room.

Gannon waited until the other Teru left before heading out of the temple. He made his way back to the clinic and made his way to where he left the blond Reyvateil. He wasn't surprised to see that she was no longer there. He questioned the nurse at the front desk and found out that she had left with one of the twins. That was fine with him. They were relatively safe in this town, and as long as Hikari didn't go running off on her own, everything should be fine. In the meantime, there was work he could be doing.

After the battle, he hadn't had a chance to check their inventory. It had to be getting pretty low. Though, at the moment, they didn't have much money, either. That was something he could at least fix. Just because he hadn't been back in town in the past decade, didn't mean his property wasn't still here. When he had gone on the run, his family's land had been sold and the profits had been put into an account for him and his belongings, weapons and armor for the most part, had been put into storage. He could sell most of it tot he weapon shop and make enough to last the group for a while. His mind made up, he left the clinic and made his way into town.

Luckly, the storage unit his belongings were in were only a few blocks away from the weapons shop. It wouldn't be too much trouble to cart everything down the road. He removed the lock and opened the door. Each and every weapon, every piece of armor. He had taken pride in. Had taken great care to keep them clean, sharp, and rust free. Now, from where he stood, he could see patches of rust creeping up the blades. Dust covered the sets of armor. Ten years had taken their toll. "That's gonna hit the price a bit... On well..." He shook his head and began loading the equipment into a cart.

It hadn't taken long before everything was ready to go. He looked around the near-empty storage unit. There were a few trinkets here and there, but nothing that meant much to him. Well, almost nothing. Sitting on one of the shelves, in an old frame, was a picture of a much younger group of friends. Zek and Melody, he could easily recognize, but the one in the center seemed like a stranger to him. A young Teru, not quite out of his teens yet, seemed to smile back at him without a care in the world. His familiar sat perched on one of his pointed horns. He had been what, sixteen? Seventeen? It wasn't long after that his life had been torn apart.

Gannon carefully removed the picture from the frame and slid it into a pocket inside his coat then took hold of the cart and left, arriving at the weapon shop soon after. He haggled a bit, knowing he wasn't going to get nearly as much as he wanted from the merchant, but was still satisfied with the six figure numbers he got. They could make it pretty far on a couple hundred thousand leaf. Still, it would go quickly with a group their size.

He was about to leave when the merchant spoke up. "First, one of them half-breed twins comes back with a pretty little blond Reyvateil, and now you show up. Feels just like old days, eh, Resonance?"

"Eh?" Gannon half turned, looking back at the shop owner. He doubted Miko would bring Hikari to a weapon shop. "So, Mana was in, huh? Any idea where they were headed?"

"One of 'em said somethin' about gettin' food. Not sure where."

"Ah. Thanks." Gannon headed out the door, heading off to find the group.

After they had eaten, Hikari stood. "Um... would it be all right if we started now?" She asked meekly. She didn't want to be rude or impatient, but at the same time with everything happening and Hikari having been powerless to stop it, she couldn't help but want to do something. Anything she could to try and make up for her previous failures. Even if it was out of her hands or she'd had nothing to do with it, guilt over what had happened pricked at her like thousands of needles. She felt the stabbing pain of it and was willing to do anything she could to make it go away.

Also, she felt the pangs of uncertainty, and wondered just how long she would have before she was left alone once again. She clasped her hands together in front of her nervously and eyed the half-ling in front of her.

Mana~
User Image

"I suppose we could get a good couple hours in if we go now. At least enough for me to show you some exercises to start off with when you're training alone." Mana nodded. She left, the Reyvateil in pursuit and took her to a remote place behind an old building. In between the building and forest was a dilapidated field. "I used to play here a lot as a kid," Mana chuckled. "Later I started practicing here before I left to become a bounty hunter. You want a nice open spot like this with nobody around to bug you. No distractions or interruptions. Of course, eventually you'll have to learn not to get distracted or it could cost you your life, but, eh..." she stopped herself, realizing how that must have sounded to the Reyvateil who'd likely never thrown a punch in her life before. She shot her a cheerful grin, as if to make her forget she'd even said anything. "We'll get there when we get there right? No sweat!" She put her hand to her chin thoughtfully. "Hm... okay. Now pick up that staff, Kari. Let's see how you do."

Hikari followed behind the half-Teru eagerly before stopping in a field. She nodded, clinging to every word Mana had to say, watching her with wide blue eyes. Mana using the old endearing nickname wasn't missed on her, either. She blushed slightly, deciding that she was happy the half-Teru felt close to her to use it. When she told her to pull out the staff, she did so rather clumsily, however. She swung it around, nearly knocking herself in the head with it. "Umm..." She held it in front of her shakily almost like a bat. "L-like this?"

"Ah... heh, heh, heh... not quite..." More like not even close. Instead of saying that, though, the half-Teru stepped up to the Reyvateil and put her arms around her, steadying the staff in her hands. "You always want to hold it like this, in the middle, so it's less likely to be knocked away and to you can use it to protect yourself." She moved through the motions as she instructed her. "That way, you can shift, like this, and jab, like this. Or take the enemy off balance, like so."

Hikari's mouth dropped open slightly, forming a perfect "o" in awe before a small smile started. "I see!" She said excitedly.

"We're not done there though. For now, I'm going to show you a few exercises. Swing forward, swing back. Side, side. Parry, parry. Again." She shifted with Hikari through the motions over and over. "There. Whenever you have any free time, I want you to practice that. Try on your own right now. I want to see if you got it on your own." She watched as the girl struggled to do it rather clumsily. "Okay, again. Don't be so hesitant. Again."

At first Hikari thought that she might actually get to liking this, but after awhile it became clear to her that learning this was going to be more difficult than she realized. There was no way that she would be able to learn anything before being left behind once again. No! I can't think like that! I will learn to protect myself! I must! She paused to wipe the sweat off her brow before continuing, more determined than ever.

Time passed and after about an hour, Mana clapped her hands. "Okay, and break. You've pretty much got the form down. I'd give it a rest for awhile, Kari. Anymore and you'll get blisters on your hands. Heh... too late," she added upon inspection after helping her put the staff away. "C'mon. We'll head back into town and wrap your hands up. They're gonna sting and be like that for awhile before they get used to it, but it'll get better." She put an arm behind Hikari, guiding her through town toward the inn. They walked past some restaurants and Mana spied Gannon wandering around out in front of them. She glanced at Hikari. Mana had an inkling that the Teru was looking for the Reyvateil in question. "Hey, over here, Gannon."

"Wh-what?!" Hikari stammered, rushing to clasp her hands behind her back in a poor attempt at disguising the blisters. "Um... hello..."

The Teru heard his name being called and turned in the direction of the voice. As he suspected, Hikari was with Mana. As he approached them, he couldn't help but notice Hikari trying awkwardly to hide her hands behind her back. Judging from the bo-staff strapped to her back, he guessed she'd roughed her hands up a bit practicing. "So, looks like someone had a productive day, eh?"

Before Mana could say anything, Hikari quickly cut in. "Mana wanted to show me a few things so I was playing around a bit." She didn't consciously know why she didn't want him to know what she was doing, but she had a feeling that he had already guessed. Even so, she still wasn't going to volunteer the information.

Maybe part of it was that she didn't want to admit to him of all people that her weakness had killed his friend. Or maybe she almost felt like she had to prove that she was as strong as that Reyvateil he obviously seemed to have an attachment to. She didn't want to even think about the inevitability of her being left behind. On top of it all, there was a small part of her that didn't want him to think that he hadn't done a good enough job protecting her.

So many reasons she realized when she thought of it, and yet it sort of seemed silly. Maybe the main reason was she wished to remain as closed off to him as possible. Because in the end, things would end just as they had before. Her being thrown away, used and betrayed. After all, she was nothing more than a tool; a singing doll. To everyone who wasn't a Reyvateil, that was how they viewed them. That was all she'd grown up knowing and so far, things hadn't seemed to sway her opinion differently. "The ceremony will be soon, right? We should... probably get ready for it.I know I'm not ready at all... I'm all sweaty and these clothes..." She smiled wanly. "They aren't something that should be worn to an occasion like that."

"I-if you want to try a Sol-Marta dish, maybe you should try something other than Chalon de Trois...?" Miko suggested, giggling nervously and sweat dropping. I'd hate for this to be your last meal, she wanted to add but kept her mouth shut. "U-um... the Bunny Roll is probably more... uh... edible," she suggested as she led the way into the restaurant and settled into a seat.

A waitress came by and handed them a couple of menus. "Please, take your time, I will be back to check in with you shortly," she said with a smile before leaving them to their devices.

"I might try the Soda in a Burger. I heard that it is weird, but it's good all the same!" Miko said. "It's your food and drink in one!"

The Teru thought it was kind of funny how Hikari desperately tried to come up with an excuse for something so obvious. Still, he'd let her be for now. She had her reasons for wanting to learn how to use a weapon, and if Mana was the one teaching her, she was in good hands. He was about to make a joke about it, but the Reyvateil changed the subject. Gannon's face darkened slightly at the mention of the ceremony, but he did his best to hide it. Honestly, he really didn't want to think about it for now. "N-no. It's not until this evening, so ya got plenty of time ta get ready. Still, maybe ya wanna go pick a new change of clothes. The both of ya." Gannon gestured to the half-Teru as he spoke. He pulled out a couple high value coins and handed one of them to each of the girls. "I got us a bit of spending money that should last us a while. Mana, maybe you wanna pick up some gloves for her in case she wants to...play around a bit more?"

"Ah, yeah... those clothes are lookin' a little worse for the wear, I'd say. As for these, a little washing will do them fine. They don't wear as easily as normal clothes. Teru magic enchantments and such." She shrugged. "But yeah, better take care of her, I suppose. She's had enough fun for one day, right, Kari?" She winked. Just between us. Though Mana had no idea why Hikari wanted to keep it secret, she at least wanted to respect her wishes. Both as a friend and a vanguard.

Hikari glanced back at the Teru. "U-um... what will you do?" She asked hesitantly, afraid to pry too far. Hikari was worried for him, but she didn't want to crowd him out and bother him with a bunch of nosy questions, either. She at least hoped that if he felt like he needed someone, she would be there for him. Of course he doesn't know that! Because you never told him, dummy! She chided herself. "U-um..." She blushed slightly, unable to look him in the eye. "You know... if you need anything..." Her blush deepened but she gathered the courage to look Gannon in the eye again. "Well, I mean... it wouldn't be such a bad thing, for a Vanguard to rely on his Reyvateil once in awhile, would it?" She chanced a timid smile up at the Teru before realizing that Mana was still there. "O-oh! Mana too, of course, I just meant... because everything that happened and... and..." She stammered becoming completely flustered.

Mana couldn't help but chuckle at the Reyvateil's ineptitude at certain social graces. It appeared that she was very awkward at expressing her own feelings very well. She patted her on the head good naturedly. "It's all good, Kari. I know what you meant." She turned to Gannon, becoming more somber. "I didn't know Zek as well as you guys did. But, man... same as Hikari here says, if there's anything that we can do, well I got your back, too. Melody too."
