Most people are shocked and still can't understand that something that cruel has happened. Some try to understand this, some can't even process it yet. Some don't seem to be affected by it.

I didn't know anyone from there, but it was just about 60 kilometers from my home town and my friend knew some one who was killed in that attack so it takes some processing from me also. My friend told that his friend, that was killed, had two small children.

There have been accusations for our gun regulations, the school funding, the health care. The parliament stopped their todays session when they heard the news and they are going to make a big thing out of this. I think this will lead to more precise protocols on how to cope in such incidents. So far we haven't had any procedures for such things. Something like this haven't even crossed anyones mind. It took everyone by suprice.

I hope this will lead more discussion about the funding for children's healtcare. Especially when we are at the moment facing with the biggest strike in the health care. About 12 thousand nurses have resigned from their jobs due to their low salaries. In major hospitals they can only attend the critical cases. Luckily the nearby hospitals reacted quickly to this incident and there weren't more causalities. Oh, and it was just said in the news that the shooter has died. He was taken into hospital with a hole in his head but the trauma was to severe and he died couple hours ago. He got the easy way out.

Yes it is always shocking when these shootings occur, especially in countries not really known for such violent acts. Here in Australia in 1996 we had a mass shooting in Tasmania where a man shot 35 people. This cause a huge overhaul of our gun laws and semi-automatics and the like were banned.

This was not popular with sections of society and I'm sure that in Finland it would be the same as Finland has a lot of forests and people would say they need these guns for hunting, as they said here too. I think though that weapons of this calibre are unneccesary in today's society and cause more evil to exist in the world.

Also I agree that more money should be spent on the mental healthcare system where people are nurtured and its not just a revolving door policy. It will be interesting to see which direction Finland will take.

It will certainly be interesting on which way our gun laws will develop after this. We have at the moment really high number of guns per person even though getting a gun isn't easy, but that's due to the hunting. But there has already been talk about if we should make our regulations even more strict.

I'm glad that the government has reacted to this crisis rapidly. After an hour when the news reached people they opened crisis centers and phone lines for people. The deparment of education has given out guides for teachers and parents how to discuss this issue with their students and children. Today was a national mourning day and the flags were hauled in the half way. The front of that school is filled with candles and kids are staying together at the crisis centres, talking to each other and to professional helpers. The Finnish Red Cross is giving out free counseling and crisis help for those who need it.

There's also been lots of talk about the shooters mental problems and medication. He was on anti-depressants, but he hadn't taken his meds for few days before his strike. There are certainly lots of buzz in the children's mental healthcare and about the funding so I hope this will at least make the government see that they need more funds.

This shooting just makes me think more on how I want to be a positive influence in peoples lives. And hopefully I can pass this on to my children. Our actions have meanings however subtle they are. Just smiling and saying hello or good morning to a stranger can make them feel good inside. I can hope for our leaders to make our world a better place but I know I can do my part one person at a time. *huggles all* Love you guys!

I think you are so right Joe! If you look back on your own life you can clearly remember certain things people said to you that really had an effect. The people who said them probably didn't even realize that their snide remark or compliment would make any difference but it did.

I too believe that even the smallest things such as smiling at someone and saying hello can be, as you said, a positive influence. smile

The problem as I understand it is that teens these days can become so troubled over so many things. Every school shooting I've heard about started with a troubled teen who couldn't handle something in their life and lost all hope along with rational thought... It's a shame young people have any access to weaponry. If they didn't, maybe we'd have a better chance of helping them and avoiding such tragedy.

I'm not so sure that the problem is access to weaponry... After all, we didn't have shootings in the early days of the USA, and guns were far more plentiful (per capita) then!

I suspect the real problem is that, as a society, we start teaching conformity at an early age; combined with all of the conflicting messages in our world, and the lack of people who actually care about youth today (including, sadly, what seems to be a majority of parents, looking at what teenagers end up doing nowadays).

[sarcasm]Amazingly enough,[/sarcasm] when they start hitting puberty and the mental expansion that comes with it, they quickly start realizing that they don't fit into the "mold" they've been exposed to, and conditioned into, their whole lives. Different people react to it in different ways... Hell, I've seen people in their 30's who eventually just one day snap and come to terms with that reality; it's better to just deal with it when it first comes up... Provided there's someone to talk to...

If only we could address the rage when it was still frustration, even if it's at the point of being pent-up... crying Any parents here, please discuss with your kids that it's OK to get frustrated at the world, and perfectly normal. Let them know that they can always talk to you or someone else about it. 3nodding A little talk can make a huge difference...

And it's mighty sad to me that it's happening in "better" societies... sad My condolences go out to those affected... If there's anything I can do from thousands of miles away, please say so! heart

I agree and I actually didn't mean that the weapon issue was the main problem. Just one of the obstacles to solving it. The real problems have a harder time getting addressed when the temptation to fall back on the use of a gun is there.

Haha! Yeah. Of course I don't mean we should all turn into "Suzy Sunshine" 24/7 'cause frankly that would get on people's nerves (not to mention it's impossible to do without going a little insane) rofl

I'd just would like to try to be more aware that a comment, or condescending look, or smile might have more of an effect on someones day than I might expect.
