I just can't believe what happened today. A high schooler opened fire at his class mates at noon in a town near me. 8 people were shot to death many injured. This is Finland for god sake! I just... can't understand what kind of a person would do that.

My god.... I never expected school shootings to happen over there.. Bad enough they happen at all but still... My thoughts are with the families who lost sons and daughters.

No one in this whole country thought something like this could happen. The shooter is at critical state in the hospital. He shot him self on the head, but some how managed to survive from it. This whole thing was a shocking blow to us all because we thought our country was safe to live. I guess we were wrong.

The problem as I understand it is that teens these days can become so troubled over so many things. Every school shooting I've heard about started with a troubled teen who couldn't handle something in their life and lost all hope along with rational thought... It's a shame young people have any access to weaponry. If they didn't, maybe we'd have a better chance of helping them and avoiding such tragedy.

Yeah. He thought he had the right to get rid of the "lesser humans". I really think he was severely mentally ill. It's said that he got the ideas and influences from these american high school shootings that have happened recently.

He was 18 what means that he was allowed to own and buy a gun. It's really not so easy to get a gun in here and you have to fill loads of papers and go through some interviews, but still it was probably legally bought.

Here's the bbc news link for the thing. bbc news

I'm not so sure that the problem is access to weaponry... After all, we didn't have shootings in the early days of the USA, and guns were far more plentiful (per capita) then!

I suspect the real problem is that, as a society, we start teaching conformity at an early age; combined with all of the conflicting messages in our world, and the lack of people who actually care about youth today (including, sadly, what seems to be a majority of parents, looking at what teenagers end up doing nowadays).

[sarcasm]Amazingly enough,[/sarcasm] when they start hitting puberty and the mental expansion that comes with it, they quickly start realizing that they don't fit into the "mold" they've been exposed to, and conditioned into, their whole lives. Different people react to it in different ways... Hell, I've seen people in their 30's who eventually just one day snap and come to terms with that reality; it's better to just deal with it when it first comes up... Provided there's someone to talk to...

If only we could address the rage when it was still frustration, even if it's at the point of being pent-up... crying Any parents here, please discuss with your kids that it's OK to get frustrated at the world, and perfectly normal. Let them know that they can always talk to you or someone else about it. 3nodding A little talk can make a huge difference...

And it's mighty sad to me that it's happening in "better" societies... sad My condolences go out to those affected... If there's anything I can do from thousands of miles away, please say so! heart

The sad truth is: guns don't kill people, people do. Finland has world's third highest gun ownership (56 guns per 100 people). Still we have a low rate at gun violence. It's still pretty rare if guns are used in some crime. Unfortunatelly in the recent years the crimes have become more severe and cruel. Also professional crime activities are becoming more and more popular. Our society is changing and not into a good direction.

There have been a lot of talk about young teenagers mental care and the recourses teachers and officials have to find these problem cases. Usually when there's some kind of funds cuttings the youngsters mental care is the first one to suffer from it. I guess here we see the result of what happens when the resources gets too low.

Finland has been in the top list when it comes to teenagers suicides. In the recent years the numbers have gone down but still many kids drops out from the society and they are very ill. They would need help, but there just aren't enough funds to help them. It's a shame that so many futures are destroyed because there isn't anyone who would notice these things early enough.

Yes, it seems that in most countries, funding for childrens' health and well-being is among the first to be cut. I suppose the reasoning goes something like "They're young, resilient and can't vote!"... If only the policy-makers would realize that they're harming their own future by not securing it from the outset... sad

How is everyone around you coping, with such a tragedy happening so close to home? Are people discussing the situation? Or just yelling about what is wrong to have caused it, without listening to each other? (I'm sorry if I'm probing too deep, I'm just intensely curious as to how other places deal with such issues... My schools, growing up, simply added "policies" as to what to do in such foreseeable events... As if breaking another rule is foremost on someone in that state's mind!)
