Why do I miss someone I never met?
With bated breath I lay.

Zoe nodded and gave an affirmative nod. She trusted Mr. Bargar with a lot of things. Fortunately, he was a knowledgeable man and he had proven quite capable of answering every question that she had so far. Considering everything, this was a wonderful, wonderful boon. She regained some of her confidence and looked up again. Philip continued to smile in a friendly and inviting way. It was encouraging to see and to feel camaraderie, even so soon after arriving here herself.

"Maybe you'll get the chance to meet him one of these days. He's promised to check in now and again."

As for when that would be, Zoe didn't have the faintest idea. Still, she would know probably about the time when he arrived. That seemed to be the way the peculiar man operated. With all of this said, Zoe listened to the interesting statement that Philip said. It was said that leaving home was a kind of birth. She wasn't sure about that, but she understood that it was a fresh start, and a way into a new life. She recalled lyrics to a song that spoke to that effect.

Sometimes when you lose your way, it's really just as well. That's when you find yourself.

It was about here that she found herself a it caught off guard. He was glad she was there and that they had met. The color returned to her cheeks and she also turned her eyes to the now wonderfully present books that lined the shelves.

"I... thank you." She took a few breaths before she swallowed. Likewise.

Unfortunately, her mind threatened to fall blank here. She struggled to think of something to ask or to say at this point. They had already talked about the weather... QUICK! Think of a conversational topic!

And all the poetry in the world finally makes sense to me.

"Well, I enjoy meeting new people and making friends. You can never have enough of those in the world, y'know?" Philip mumbled this softly, looking down at his feet in an awkward manner. She spoke very fondly of this stranger. He wasn't exactly sure how to respond to that. A 'good for you' seemed rude and too forward. The disgraced soul opened up his thermos once more to down quite a bit of coffee in order to fill the awkward silence. Zoe began to speak up as he drank. Philip stopped halfway in order to give her his attention. She only expressed her thanks, but Philip still felt that was enough to make him cut all his actions abrumptly. Especially if it meant seeing her pretty smile. Her features were very smooth and pure.

Sometimes, if you lived long enough and traveled enough places, you encountered people who shared similar features with you or someone else you might've recalled meeting. Although it was true that Philip probably hadn't lived long enough and been enough locations to observe this, he could tell this wasn't the case with Zoe. Her cheeks, nose, mouth and eyes were so defined and precise...It looks like she had been able to shape them herself. He couldn't imagine meeting a single person who shared single perfect structure of her face. In Philip's thoughts, he'd realized she stopped talking and that he had sort of left her in silence. Blushing madly at this, he brought the coffe back up to his lips in an attempt to hide his foolishness, frantically thinking of something to say.

The container was topped and set aside. "Um...It's sort of inconvenient to move to a new place around New Year's, don't you think? Normally it's a time of relaxation with loved ones. Do...you have any plans? A resolution, maybe?" Philip shyly bit his lip to conceal a charming smile, but it broke in a few seconds. "I've never sucessfully kept one. It gets kind of saddening after a while. You work so hard in the beginning and then feel so bad about letting that all go to waste," He laughed softly at the observation. "This year I'm shooting for something simple. Be happier. Maybe a bit lame, as well, but that's always something someone can work on, right?" His feet began to shuffle with the delicate situational conversation he had brought up. Perhaps this was getting a bit too person? She was just a stranger, after all. It wasn't as if he seriously planned on spending New Year's with her, or made plans for the future or anything like that. He thought it would be really nice to make those plans with a friend, but knew that thinking things ahead and getting hopes up wasn't always the best idea.

This was true, too. One could never have too many friends. Some part at the back of her mind offered a counter by suggesting that a dictator could have too many friends, because they could run the risk of not having allies that were true and honest to them, or likely to be found at their side when things got tough. Then again, in such a case how did you know they were really a friend? Fortunately enough, Zoe never found herself in such a position and she had absolutely no desire for world domination, so the likelihood of running into this was slim, at best.

The thoughtful silence that followed their exchange became just a bit awkward as both struggled momentarily for topics, though ignorant of the other doing so. Philip was the first to procure one. New Years!

In the blur of everything, moving and otherwise, she had lost track of the days. Now that he mentioned it, it wasn't far off from the new year, was it? The holiday season itself was only a few short weeks away. Oh wow. Had it already been so long?

"Some of the traffic was worse than I thought it would be," Zoe admitted. Though, it was a poor replacement for how thoughts of the holidays made her heart sink so sharply. Normally she did spend it with loved ones. Family and friends. There were parties at home. Grandma threw the best ones at her large house on the hill. People would come and enjoy the celebration by the largest of trees that could be built up indoors, one that stood over ten feet tall. So quickly to her mind came the lights and the colors, and memories of running through the house with her cousins and siblings. The taste of eggnog, the smell of cookies and ham.

She bit her lip and her thoughts focused more specifically on the New Year. The flashing memories became a bit more obedient slide show at this turn. Resolutions... She smiled at that. She hadn't been terribly successful with those herself. What was the last one she made..? To eat better? Well, that wouldn't be a problem this year. Not at all.

She agreed with Philip. This year could be a successful year. Fortunately, there was always something to work on just because no one was perfect. "Right. I think that sounds like a good idea. No plans yet, but I wonder if a goal like... Mm.... Maybe just generally laughing more would be better for me. Maybe laugh once a day."

Zoe considered this and then gave a confirmed nod. "I think that's it. Someone told me, once, that laughter clears stress away faster than anything else. ... Or maybe that was cheese...."

She shrugged and her smile returned again. Either way, it was something, it was simple, and with luck it would help brighten things up. "That counts for a resolution, right?"

Now that he began to think about it, the traffic coming along this way was indeed pretty bad. Surprisingly so. Philip's experience had always been that the beginning week of Christmas and the third of Janurary resulted in the most road congestion. Being that the final days of december experienced similar phenomena here, it lead him to believe there were a lot more people than he previously predicted living within Soleil. They'd already established the more friends the merrier, so it wasn't so bad.

Philip's family had never celebrated the American version of New Year's. For his adopted father, it was only an excuse to drink more and beat him and his mother. There were hardly times of celebration in that household. The one year that Philip remebered him and his mother ever doing something special was the year after they got away from that god awful house and managed to live by themselves. His mom baked a cake and they ate it together the morning of New Year's. The memory always threatened to make him cry from both sadness and happiness. Seems like just yesterday that he could hug his mother whenever he felt like the real world was too much for him. She would hug him back and sing lullabies. Those were hard times, but Philip knew he wouldn't have changed them for the world. It made him who he was today.

The book enthusiast noticed how Zoe's reaction went from mildly melancholy to pleasant at the mention of New Year's rsolutions. It seems she was also well accustomed to coping with breaking the cycle. It was good to know he wasn't the only one. Her goal was also something that interested him. A lot of the time, no matter how bad he was feeling, no matter how bad things got - he never forgot to smile and laugh. It was one of those things that appeared on his face out of his control. Part of his nature. He supposed, in that way, that he was blessed. Some people couldn't make themselves smile, especially not if they had to go through what Zoe or Philip had experienced.

"Who needs laughter if you have good cheese?" He snickered. "No, but I agree. I try to laugh often, as well as put a smile on other people's faces. I don't think that resolution is unreasonable at all. In fact, I hope I can somehow contribute to making it last." Philip grinned down at her and gave a nerdy thumbs up, his palm stigmata briefly making an appearance during the prolonged motion.

Cheese was equally considered to be a coping mechanism, likely because it slid into the classification of a comfort food. Cheesy bread, pizza, lasagna, macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, just to name a few from a list that could easily go on for such a long time. It wasn't the healthiest of edibles, anyone could attest, but when combined with other ingredients, there were few things that brought one to feeling at ease enough to fall asleep in proper quantities. Though, really, Zoe was quite pleased that Philip had caught the joke and played off of it too.

It helped also, to hear someone confirm that a chosen resolution was a good idea. It encouraged her to act on it and to keep it as a goal for the new year. Perhaps it will help, and with luck, it was a resolution that she could use to bring others up. Perhaps she could expand the goal to help encourage others to smile and laugh as well. It was also uniquely encouraging to hear Philip's support as proven in the gesture.

There was discoloration in the center of his hand that was only briefly visible as he lifted his thumb. While noticed, there wasn't anything about it that drew Zoe's attention to it. It was what it was. How it got there wouldn't change anything about the gesture or about the sentiment that Philip shared and offered. So, perhaps it was a simplistic mindset, but she did not allow a detail like this to worry her greatly. She saw a thumbs up. She saw a positive expression from his face. She had a friend. She would have help.

"Thank you, Philip." She smiled and lifted her right hand, borrowing his gesture by giving a thumbs up. "Every little bit helps."

"Well, that's what friends are for, right?" The words came out mildly abruptly, and it was only until he said them that Philip realized something. Were they considered friends? They met a few minutes ago. He didn't think that met the 'friend' qualifications. It probably actually involved hanging out a little bit more. Maybe the needed to meet two or three mores times for him to be able to ask her on an outing. Philip really didn't know. Was there a peer handbook somewhere out there? He needed to read it because the man had no idea what the hell he was doing.

His cheeks darkened and he eventually blurted after a stagnant silence, "Ah- do you like coffee? Or tea? Would you perhaps like to get some with me sometime?" Damn. That was really forward. But what if she thought they weren't quite friends? Sharing coffee with someone would make them quite friendly, wouldn't it? Philip pursed his lips and covered his eyes in slight embarassment, steeling himself. His arms returned to his sides to become stuffed into his pockets.

"Okay, let me explain!" He laughed at himself shyly. Philip thought he was sounding like a total idiot. "I don't mean it as a date, you know? Something that's supposed to be romantic. We just met, and I want to respect your boundaries! But you're very nice, and I think we could become better friends over some hot beverages. And, uh, well...I'm the manager of the cafe here near here. I'd love to serve you." By the time he finished speaking, his olive skin had taken on a scarlet tone. He had more to say, but needed to stop talking. Philip felt like he was butchering it.

Maybe I should just turn around and leave... He thought, staring down at Zoe bashfully. She probably thought he was some sort of creep. Did people ask others to share food with them after a first greeting? How else would the opportunity even arise?

Zoe's arm returned to her side. Her left hand held the book she had every intention to purchase, and it wasn't likely that she would walk off without it. The statement of friendship seemed casual enough to Zoe, so she didn't worry about it. However, even she was caught off guard a bit by the invitation that followed. She hadn't been asked out before, at least not by someone she didn't previously kow for years. As she struggled for an answer and how she felt about that, he hurried into an explanation.

The surprised blush on her face calmed down as she processed this and realized that it was likely that the invitation he extended was because he worked at a nearby café. It was busines acmen as well as just a friendly non-threatening environment where they could casually converse. That made more sense. Nothing to be scared of.

When she was sure of her voice, she answered. "That would be nice."

Her smile, when it surfaced, seemed to recover from a bout of bashfulness. The could be friends, right?

Despite having groceries, making a trip back home before coming back would take too much time than simply passing through the Cherise shopping district. Akira walked back to the district and found the shop he say the day before. He hoped that as he entered it, he could find some section for DVDs. He started browsing, getting lost in the amount of books the small store held before finding the selection of DVDs, surprised they even had some of the older movies.

Philip let out a giant sigh of relief. She didn't panic at his question - didn't get angry at him, and didn't flat out turn him down, either. It was more than he could've asked for some girls in his past, though. The last time Philip had tried to ask someone out on any semblance of a "date" he got labeled as a creep. Or a stalker? He couldn't recall. The memory was so awful he purged it from his mind. He wasn't a pervert, or anything of that nature. In fact, Philip couldn't fathom how he could've been perceived as such a thing. Was it because his touch was cold? Maybe because he was excessively friendly. He honestly didn't know, and had been alive too darn long to change himself.

The disgraced spirit smiled at her Zoe and laughed, scratching the back of his neck. "Geez, I'm really glad you agreed. That would've been awkward if not...I'm glad we can spend some time together! Maybe, perhaps, even find some books we've both read and discuss them? I think that would be fun...It would certainly bring up some nice conversation over tea, right?" He hummed softly in amusement, replicating her actions of securing the book for purchase. "Oh, yeah...Is there a specific time you would like to meet?" Philip clutched his things close, and offered for the both of them to leave the isle in search for a more spacious area that allowed customers room to traverse the science fiction and fantasy section.

As the panic passed and everything once again returned to calm and conversational, Zoe felt distinct relief for herself. Though now that she thought about it, it probably would have been even more awkward if she had said no.... Fortunately for both of them, she did agree! She felt a nervous chuckle and cleared her throat again.

The time to get out, to enjoy a warm drink, and indeed to have the time and space to talk about books and stories was a welcome one. Though, there was the question about what time would be good. Zoe did want to double-check with her work schedule, but when she did know that, she was happy to set a specific time. That they had a place indeed made it easier.

"I want to check with my schedule, but I have a feeling I'll be available in the mornings or around noon on most days." Though, experience taught her that the more specific you could be with a meeting time or place, the easier and better it was to meet up again. As it was, to not have a specific time meant that they would have to clarify it later, and that would be harder to do when she didn't have a phone. .... Tomorrow was probably too soon. She doubted she would be officially starting for another few days... Then again, if she was on the clock the day she turned in her application, there was a healthy chance that she was probably on the schedule already. She had no idea with her new job.

She felt herself becoming more nervous even as she struggled to think of a good day. "Uh.... If not tomorrow.. perhaps the day after?"

Then she heard what she said. She turned away to hide her face, now keenly aware of the color that must have risen to it. "I mean, when is best for you?"

While he was scanning through the titles, not many of the new releases appealed to him. Out of curiosity, he looked around, spotting a new customer to the store, with oddly changing hair.
