(go for the fast-forward. but maybe PM some of the other players who've slackened their interest first. The prospect of actual fighting might draw them back in.)

((Actually, I'm headed off to vacation too, but I'll leave on this note.)) An arrow hits and downs the man who asked about archers on pikes. A flight of arrows hit earth a hundred yards shy of the front ranks. Figures appear in the trees. The battle has begun, six and 3/4 hours after the first report. There is still some work to be done, the pit is only about 3 feet across and not very deep, fire pits are build at least roughly for about 20 minutes of fuels, and you have about 15 shots per archer of fire arrows. You have plenty of rough arrows and overturned carts. Your bowment have longer range, but a slower reload.
Details to arrive (printed in white, look at it monday so it'll be like I just posted): ((EDIT: Color changed to red for visibility and use.)) exclaim The elves fire a second barriage from the trees to the ground ahead of where the troops were, advancing to new positions more in range at the edge of the woods, notching another arrow with an extra, untold step which makes them seem less graceful for a moment. All troops in the field take the die amount I rolled x5 for the area of effect hail of arrows. Those off to the side are unaffected, as with those at or before the line. You have trumpet signals available. Yes, I realize you could cheat with that, but its not game changing, just at least another turn to work off of.

Lloish withdraws with any troops currently under his command to the protected circle of our troops. He orders the archers to hold on using their fire arrows (or lighting the bracken in the pits) and stay in as much cover as possible. He also spreads the word that any Elf highlighted in faerie fire at any point during the battle is to be given preferential targeting. They'll be a noble or commander or some such. Finally, he attempts to organize the archers to fire in shifts. One group shoots while another reloads. While reloading, they should attempt to stay in as much cover as possible without limiting the reload speed. If this is all too confusing for them (which it very well might be) he gives them clearance to fire at will, so long as they hold off on the fire arrows for now.
Following that, Lloish will scale the crude watchtower that the troops built. He will attempt the following actions in sequence: gust of wind against the next incoming arrow volley to rebound it back at the enemy, create water distributed as far as it will go (12 gallons) to soak bowstrings, and spot (+7 +spyglass) to locate enemy commander and highlight him with faerie fire.
(I suggest that everyone waits on posting second actions, because I read the white text in BigMage's post after writing this and wasn't able to make much sense of it.)

"Augh, my eye!" Lloish cries out, as the unfolding spyglass jabs him in the face.

Sursqueek orders the archers to fire a non-Flaming arrows into the enemy ranks. Moving to his mid field position, He says to Lloish that perhaps the best course of action would be to fire flaming arrows into the woods followed by a gust of wind to fan the flames, and if possible, throwing some flammable liquids in to aid torchiness. This way by the time the enemy is retreating they will (hopefully) have a wall of flames blocking them.

The first flight of arrows is unleashed, killing only two of your side, but three of theirs. Not successful by far, but at least it is winning odds at the moment. The tree cover is offering too high a concealment. A first wave of elves begin to approach rapidly, holding bows up high that moments ago cost them some extra time...

"Hold your fire! The trees offer too much cover... and the fire arrows arent ready yet." Thanatos shouts to the troops. He keeps the hold fire order until the elves are on the plains then he orders the firing upon those. When the elves are about 1/2 of the way to our main base he orders the infantry to get infront of the archers and prepare for the onslaught.

(I'll leave managing the fire arrows to you guys, but I agree torching them right before the elves retreat is a good way to rout the army. As for my part, I'll be trying to weaken them to the point where they can be routed.)
Lloish abandons trying to get the archers into some sort of order, leaving Sursqueak and Thanatos in charge of them. He waits for the next incoming arrow volley and tries to drive it back into the elves with a gust of wind.
(I'm getting the feeling that my huge, sequential if/then posts are throwing the rhythm of the game off a bit, so i'll try to start limiting them to only a couple of actions per turn.)

(water 'attack' still an option for oncoming troops.) Roll for wind. Trumpet commands at the ready. Time before the charging elves even fire...

(gust of wind doesn't need a roll by me. It simply casts, generating a 50mph burst of wind. I'm going to try and use this wind to rebound the next hail of arrows that the archers fire back at them. Let me know if it works, and if a damage roll needs to be made, please make it for me.)
To Thanatos: "We have plenty of regular arrows in our supplies. I suggest we continue to use them rather than let them fire at us unhindered from the tree line."

(Just so i think ive got this all straight...the elves are charging and at the same time firing arrows at us...so eventually they should come out of the damned tree covering...at which point the archers should resume firing...Then when the elves rout, we send fire arrows over the top to torch the trees causing a hammer and anvil effect where we can completely destroy the elven army. However since fire takes a while to get completely going we should probably light the trees about 3/4 of the way through the melee battle, and it could be fanned by Llosh's gust of wind, making it spread quicker and faster. For some reason this is all in parenthesis and I dont exactly know why.) If I got the elves running out of the tree covering thing correct then Thanatos will continue to have his archers hold until the elves first few ranks are out of the tree covering and then he will have them open fire. If i was completely wrong and the elves arent moving forward...Thanatos will suggest the tortuga/shield wall/box o' shields formationing it up, and having our infantry slowly advance on the elves position (by suggest I mean ride over to them and tell them my plan, and ask if they have any other ideas...preferably of the better type).
