We're hitting that wall again where the training causes more problems than solves them.

Why does AS make sense to many of these people? Because they're yanked from the world, have their formative years in an environment that's all aberrants, trained to fight with their only real challenges being other aberrants.

Day to day socialization is a parody of normal human interaction, because every day is a reminder that -they're not human-. Moreso, not fit to be in human company. For the people deep in the program like Meghan and Rowan, one wonders how much time they've actually spent in the world?

And for those people, people like Hammond and Laura who chafe at the strings guiding them, being a living WMD for people who are terrified of them, who provide no window to see the similarities between themselves and the people they're saving...I wouldn't be surprised that a large percentage of Alphas are either vocal or covert AS.

This is going to be really interesting.

The worst part about this: he will, too. gonk

Gendou: I continue to be amazed at the depth of character and story, the complexity of your characters and your storyline. Your tone is excellent, hinting at directions of thought the readers may not have followed on their own and (obviously) inciting us to think about all the angles until we're all dizzy with excitement and possibilities. It makes me a bit curious to know how much you thrive on our arguements to continue the plot. ninja heart Do your readers give you ideas for further plot twists with their speculation?

An additional note: it's gotten to the point where, when there's a new chapter up, whoever finds it first around this apartment announces it to the other and we sit and read it together. heart And then talk about it. You're doing wonderfully, Gen. Keep it up!! heart 3nodding

I really can't add much to what was said, because I'm not a very in-depth reader, but...

I thought it was interesting. The staff, and all the administration worried about Laura spreading the AS movement, when by all indications she is the person that is most determined to keep those very thoughts from the classroom. Whether it be professionalism or not, I do not know. But it's almost as if she thinks it's wrong. Despite her apparently open support of it.

Anyway. That's all I have to add.

Oh, poor Gendou... (not the author... though you'd probably guess that) and poor Jillian. They're both so wounded. I have a thoroughly irrational desire to snuggle both of them. sweatdrop

I wonder if this is how Gendou meets Rene, though, having to ask a girl to the dance... or was that why he approached Jillian? *slips Jillian a notebook under the table* ninja It probably helped she was alone, actually... though the rejection he felt must have been awful.

I'd love to know more about the histories and awakenings of the older generation. It looks like Meghan's (and maybe Ephraim) are the only two "AS is stupid" figures among the higher ups, which for Rowan makes sense - she was trained to be an assassin as a child, right? A certain amount of contempt for her targets (mostly human, it appears) is reasonable, given the circumstances of her raising. I wonder about Laura and Hammond, though... and I'm still curious as to the circumstances of Wyndi being attacked (but that's pure self indulgence) and the contrast between the Betas, who have families and go home on holidays, and the alphas, who appear to be completely cut off from society.

It makes an interesting contrast in more ways than one... without love for non-abberants, being able to dislike them is easier, but you have this whole crop of individuals who still have that connection. I can't see most of the Betas being ok with anything that could kill their families. It also brings up interesting issues if the line between beta and alpha was so fluid; it's a psisiological fact that people exntend themselves when under extreme emotional stress; could battle between alpha and beta with the beta protecting a loved on lead to the beta effectively becoming an alpha? The stress on rating obscures how trivial the difference likely is.

Of course, we're mostly seeing things from the Alpha side of the fence... I'd love to see more from the beta side, but that's probably asking a bit much.

Honestly, the US culture seems a lot less hostile than the one in most super power setups... but didn't Meghan say that part of the problm was their stressing how dangerous abberants were so they could get reports on them and have them turned in?

Sort of a "you made your bed, now lie in it sucker," sort of situation, only the previous generation made the bed.

Very intrieging, Gendou. Thanks!

*headdesk* Durr. Hammond/Rowan IS so totally OTP. I missed the "he totally likes her" in one of the previous chapters. Hoorah for rereads!

And of course, those in control of the exchange students will be grilling their students for information when they return as well. So it'll be interesting to see whether our group displays some of their more powerful, in order to tell the others, "we're dangerous, don't mess with us," or keeps them well hidden, for future endeavours. Equally, just what level of Aberrant is sent from the other countries, for similar reasons.

Marty vs Fred was interesting: Fred's ability is certainly dangerous, perhaps moreso than either of Michael or Weston, dependent on just how fast she can fire the ball bearings. Marty's sheer weight could have some future applications as well, although even he would have trouble resisting actual artillery fire. I wonder whether there'll be any armour (tanks, mounted weapons, RPGs, etc.) in the facilities given the needs for explosive weaponry against certain Aberrants.

Gendou's fight was foreboding: was the fear simply Rene's or was it something to do with Gendou? Equally, just how far can Rene's transmutations go: can she create potential charged antimatter? It's a pity Gendou lost though, seeing as he could've done with some more self-confidence.

The final question, of course, is whether the person who you spar with is selected simply because your abilities match, or because the teachers recognise a certain something about the personalities too. ninja

heart heart I couldn't wait. I was gonna wait until Ian was home from work, but I just couldn't stand it. Had to read it now. heart heart

What comes to mind immediately is how handy an ability that automatically targets the inherent weakness of the opponent would be. Chaotic and utterly unpredictible from one opponent to the next, but if she can sense, maybe subconsciously, what will do the most damage and that's what results in her chaos...

...she just needs an opponent deathly allergic to fish now. 3nodding heart

See, this is what I get for checking the Guild compulsively, I read things before I'm conscious enough to form a coherent response...

Very nicely done. Fred's abillity is... interesting. I imagine It would make for interesting impromptu weapons on gravel roads, etc. Or if she got pissed off eating cereal out of the box. Death by Lucky Charms marshmallows, bwahaha.

Aaaand yeah, again with the whole lack of coherency, anything else I say would make even less sense than the cereal thing so I'm just not gonna say it.

It's interesting to see who is paired with whom and how they react to the conflict. A lot of people seem to have real inferiority complexes about there abilities... it makes it much more interesting.

I wonder if there's ever going to be a weather alpha. ^_^ You could combine wind and water and electricity to make something like it, I suppose.

Something that just occured - Cal, the SA kid, has really internalized the alpha/beta split; he referred to his abilities as "useless." Could that be a side effect of SA? If aberrants are superior to humans that implies a hierarchy even within aberrants.

Someone who could see past that to what people CAN do instead of what they CAN'T would be very useful.

Foreign exchange students! That's just neat, but dangerous for everyone. I wonder if anyone would be prepped as a spy. I can't imagine them sending a student without some prepping, and their bound to face an inquisition on return. The power to stop a heart! That's pretty scary.

I suppose that fight just scarred Gendou even more. No asking Rene to the dance now. ; ; It's so sad! Much improved from fish, though. Just have to scare her and she does nifty changes. Teachers are mean when the pair people, but I suppose it's for the best. Learn by trauma!

And -THIS- is the most dangerous blunder perpetrated so far.

Forcing Rene into conflict without understanding (much less control) her abilities, while gendou's fragile psyche receives several harsh blows. They left the battle mortally afraid of each other. And both have an insane capacity for destruction.

Hmmm, living target practice. Could be a useful bodyshield, if you can find someone strong enough to carry Marty around. I suppose working out would work too, but it wouldn't be as funny.

However, the students are all fighting alone. In the field, it seems they never operate alone. At what point, exactly, are they going to start AbFam in a team setting? Fred using Marty as a shield would be the same effect as a Crossbowman behind a mantlet. Or perhaps, depending on Fred's abilities, Fred throwing Marty would be quite effective.

Gen and Rene, I can't say I expected the outcome. But I also can't say I was suprised why it occured. Your writing was, as always, amazing. Fear has always been a wonderful 'motivator', and a good reason to force someone to test their limits.

Well what's that now? xd
