*Bard hurries back to the parking lot, staring at the cars in utter confusion. He doesn't see Melliandra in the parking lot, nor in its vicinity, and he can't imagine how she could have done this anyway.*
*he hears a car pull into the lot behind him, but doesn't think much of it until a gruff bass voice says* "What's going on here?"
*Bard turns to see an African-American police officer staring accusingly from his patrol car*
I don't know, Officer. *Bard lifts his arms in a shrug* I heard the ruckus and thought it might be a friend of mine. *he improvises* She's a bit klutzy, but I don't think even she could do---
*The sound of screeching tires and a wailing car horns interrupts him. In the intersection, six cars collide.*
"What the f--" *the officer looks at the accident, stunned. He shoots Bard a warning* "Don't go anywhere. I'll be back to talk to you!"
*He puts his lights on and gets on the horn, calling in assistance. He does a U-turn around Bard, heading toward the intersection*
*Bard can't get the image of a 15th Century lady unwittingly stepping into traffic out of his head. He hurries after the patrol car to investigate the accident*

*Mell pulls her hand away from the metal as the cars collide, leaving the lights cycling through their rainbow of colors* My my, now that's a mess.
*she turns to see the flashing lights of the police car* Such a colorful time this is! *As the officer brings his vehicle to a halt again near the scene of the accident, she ambles over for a closer look*

"Are you all right, Miss?" *The officer addresses Melliandra as he gets out of his car and surveys the scene* "Did you see what ha--- What in Sweet Jesus' name happened to those lights?" *he stares in awe*

Oh, sir! I have no idea! *Melli widens her eyes in a look of innocent confusion. She motions toward the roof of his squad car* My goodness! Now yours are changing as well! *and sure enough, they too are now shifting their way through the color spectrum*
How strange . . . I think I had better stay out of the way, sir. *she murmers demurely. Smirking inwardly, she strolls onward, leaving the officer to deal with the chaos she's causing. She continues across the street, only paying partial attention to all the people now climbing out of their cars to shout at each other*
*Upon reaching the opposite curb, a fire hydrant catches her eye.* Funny looking little thing . . . *she crouches down next to it*

*Bard approaches the scene of the accident, staring dumbstruck at the scene before him. The police officer is doing his best to maintain order, and in the distance he heres more squads coming. No one appears to be gravely injured at least. But there is also no sign of Melliandra....*

*Mell rests the palm of her hand against the hydrant* Water, hmmmmm . ... *she looks up at all honking and shouting going on* Let's cool those tempers off, shall we?
*Melliandra rises and steps back again, looking around to see if there are any other hydrants in the immediate vicinity . . . and then, with a quick mutter and a flick of her fingers, water starts to spray from the top of them, like a series of fountains, raining down on everyone*
*She tilts her head back and holds out her hands, palms up to catch the water, and cackles delightedly*

*Bard can't figure out what's going on, and from the looks of it, neither can the police. Just when it seemed nothing could get stranger, it does. Suddenly the fire hydrants erupt, spraying water everywhere. Amid the soggy confusion, Bard wanders from corner to corner, trying to see if Melliandra's amid the throng of onlookers, but she's still nowhere to be found. Perhaps she'd gone into a store, ordoubled back on him... he pushes his sodden hair out of his eyes and grimaces.*
Excuse me... *he snags a random bystander* ... I'm looking for a friend of mine. Thin, blonde, blue-eyed, wearing an old-fashioned dress... have you seen her?

"Geez, buddy, I dunno!" *the guy's still staring dumbfounded at scene before them* "Can you believe this sh-"
I saw someone like that! *Unable to resist, Melli pipes up from behind them. She points up the street in the direction she'd been moving before stopping to mess with the lights* I believe she was headed in that direction.

*Bard blinks at the woman*
... Thanks.
*he sets off in the direction the woman pointed*

My pleasure ... *she grins, and after a minute, turns the corner to head a separate way, whistling cheerfully to herself*
*Mell ambles along, leaving a path of mild chaos her wake as she uses her magic to investigate all the wonders of 20th century Skokie. She pauses once again outside a store window, eyeing the mannequins and rubbing her chin thoughtfully. A wicked sort of smile spreads slowly across her face and she lifts her hand to rest against the glass*

*A firm hand grips Melliandra's arm. The familiar face of a lanky man in a grey suit appears in the window's reflexion next to Melli's. Bard mutters softly*
I don't know why you look like that, or how you did that back there, but you don't honestly think I'm so easily fooled, do you?

*Melli chuckles, smirking at him in their reflection* Why, no, I suppose not.
Hands off, though, dear. *She sends a slight jolt from her skin into his hand and up his arm, scolding pleasantly* You shouldn''t interfere with spellcasting so carelessly, you know.

*Bard jerks his hand back in surprise. He stares, first at her, then at it, then back at her. He flexes his fingers, still feeling a trace tingle*
S-Spellcasting?

*Mell turns her head to look at him directly, lifting an eyebrow* That is what I said.
*She glances at his dripping hair and suit and grins* My dear boy, you're quite soaked. *Pursing her lips, she releases a little whistle of air in his direction, drying him off completely* There now, isn't that an improvement?

*Bard looks stares at his bone dry suit coat, involuntarily taking a step back, but he recovers quickly enough*
We.. we can discuss this in the Brink. We need to go back now.
