tecche I would like to recommend the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. The first one is called, So You Want To Be a Wizard?. It's set in modern times, but the magic system/rules is/are really interesting. It's a great series all on its own. I read them all but the one where (spoiler warning for potential new readers) Nita's mom dies and the newest one.

The fifth one, the one you mentioned, is so depressing, but probably necessary. Spoiler: Although she doesn't actually die in the book. She dies between books. Still. In the last one, the universe is compared to a dishwasher. It's really amusing, though Kit is like, 'Go away, you make my brain hurt.' Which was also really amusing.

More recommendations: The Darkangel Trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce and the Wolf Tower and Unicorn books by Tanith Lee. Odd, but good.

anneadeline Another one I recommend is 'The Naming' by Alison Croggon. It has magic (they are called bards), a girl as the main character, but not so much fighting. Only the first book is out, but the next one is coming out in August. Yes. I was reading through and I highly reccomend that book as well. Highly. I'm actually going to try and order the second one off of Amazon since it's out in Australia... I could never get into the LOTR books but this is supposed to be 'Written in the Tolkien Tradition' quoted from Tamora Pierce. I think if you like the Immortals quartet you'd like this series... Of course, that's my comparison... xD

I loved His Dark Materials, and The Old Kingdom (The Garth Nix series), though I haven't been to worried about his new series!
LotR is written woth a lot of description, which is not how I would describe Tamora Pierce's books at all.
Anyway, my suggestion is Karen R. Brooke's series which starts with It's Time, Cassandra Klein. The whole series is based around an alternate world Morphea, where all things of Greek/Roman mythology are actually lived (all of the gods are there as well as people like Hyppolita, the Graces). It is a really good read.
If you are into the magic stuff I reccomend Wicca or Sweep. It depends on where you are fromas to what name the series goes by. It is based in our time, so isn't really fantasy...

I did think of buying it from amazon UK or getting it used. I haven't decided yet though, because the shipping costs... sweatdrop ottid If you are into the magic stuff I reccomend Wicca or Sweep. I've read that series (though not the one with her daughter) and really liked it! I'd call it modern fantasy. One thing that I didn't like was how it switched narrators in one of the end books...

That was between all of the different members of the Coven? I liked it when it switched to the one that was the same age as Morgan's sister, I've just gone blank on most of the names...

Of course it switches and leaves cliffhangers confused There's a new series out by Cate Tiernan, I think it's called Balefire. Have you read it? (I haven't)

Ohhh, I forgot about Charlie Bone! Those books are good and they are by Jenny Nimmo for anyone wanting to look them up. It's very similar to Harry Potter but different. Charlie still goes to Boarding School but its only during the week.

Ethereal Dream I thought about making a thread like this, but I guess you've beaten me to it. xp
I'd recommend the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede and the Squire's Tales series by Gerald Morris. i second the recomendation for squires tales. It is about mainly King Aurthur's round table knights.
