"Greetings to you all," the priest replied, "Lahmear's blessings upon you. Please, sit."

He gestured to the chairs with a smile and it seemed a bit of the tension in the room vanished at this. Seist was quick to accept his invitation. Behind the three, the acolyte shut the door and walked over to the scribe's desk. She drew out a piece of blank paper but made no motion to do anything more, instead waiting on High Priest Therris's request.

"There are only a handful of priests of Dues and Frain that have marked their eyes so," Therris said, watching Seist as he spoke, "Which of those are you?"

"Margrave Seist Loringar of Kas Kain. This is Bazil, my attendant for while I am in Downswood, and this woman is Autumn, of the fae people. She was attacked in the streets by what I believe are mercenaries under the employ of Baroness Yvette. They carry fae-poison and seemed intent on kidnapping her mostly unharmed, until my companion intervened. One escaped, one we brought here. We now turn to you for advisement."

Seist's tone was respectful but the priest did not seem impressed by either his title, faith, or his polite words. He barely acknowledged that Seist had spoken and instead turned his attention to Autumn.

"Do not let the priest speak for you, fae," he said gently, "I have heard of Seist. His reputation for causing trouble precedes him. What would you ask of me to do?"

page 2176

Autumn took her seat at High Priest Therris’ gesture. Therris’ words concerning Seist drew a warm smile from her as she successfully fought down a giggle. “I met Seist only this evening when he and his companion intervened on my behalf; this is the first I have encountered his reputation and I thank you for the warning. In this instance I find myself in agreement with him in seeking your advice.” She diplomatically chose not to mention that she had not been consulted for this decision.

page 2176

Bazil made a wave with his hand reaching out into the air before him until his fingers brushed the back of the chair. With some care while maneuvering, he took a seat and listened to that which the high priest had to speak making no nod at the mention of his own name. Certainly, Priest Seist's reputation had preceded him. It was one of the reasons he had been asked to attend the wandering margrave on behest of those who hired him through his employer. Inwardly, he might be amused by the high priest's remark, but wondered if it changed anything. Thinking it over, the high priest might be interested to have a fae in his presence just as much as any other intellectual who was not completely swayed by the situation of the dragons to the East.

((Okay, Therris is going to ask for everyone to explain what happened... can I do a time-skip to the end of the explanation? Please?))

((Autumn will be diplomatically more forthright with Therris. I'm fine with a time-skip.))

((Please. Bazil will not say much differently than he has already said before. Details of the battle while little of himself. That doesn't necessarily explain why/how a blind man would get in the middle of such a thing but meh. XD))

Therris listened to each account gravely, seeming to pay the most attention to Autumn. He did not remark on Bazil's explanation, although he seemed keenly interested and it did not appear to be simply because he wanted to know the exact narrative of events. Seist had very little to say and managed to restrain himself from making suggestions at the end of his account. Instead, he handed over the fae-poison for the high priest to inspect, taking care to keep it away from Autumn.

"I will have to take your expertise in this," Therris replied, returning the pouch to Seist, "I am not schooled in poisons. We priests of Lahmear do not share the curiosity in all things of your order. I trust that you will dispose of it for me."

"I will," Seist replied.

"Than here is my wisdom," he said, addressing Autumn directly, "I can only advise as I would a mortal, for I have little interaction with the fae. But you must understand that this is a delicate situation. I can ensure that this man in my custody does not get another attempt at harming you. I can have some of my priests seek out his partner but it will have to be done subtly and in secret. Our chances of success are slim."

"Or," he continued, "I can use the full authority of both my god and my position to find and bring justice - true justice - to both of these. Lahmear's justice. I do not know what that will be. However, such a thing will put this entire affair in the public sphere and I am not certain that would be a wise thing to do at this point. It could... foster resentment. And I am not certain of my ability to protect you. In the end, it is your choice to make. I will honor whatever you decide."

page 2177
Jenannen
“It is for mortals that I seek your advice and I will therefore cede to your wisdom. I do not wish to further upset presently strained relations by seeking the retribution of the fae nor justice in its full resplendence,” she spoke softly in the same diplomatic manner she had used when she spoke of the events that had befallen her. “May Lahmear’s light bless and guide you,” she concluded.

page 2177
Kiddo Seanchain
The priest seemed satisfied with this. Relieved, almost.

"Than I shall keep your first attacker imprisoned until I am certain he is no longer a threat," Therris replied, "Lahmear's light protect you, fae-child."

Seist was the first to stand. He glanced between Autumn and Bazil and then turned to High Priest Therris.

"If you don't mind," he said, "I'd like to stay and talk a moment longer. I have some questions to be asked in private. Bazil, would you be so kind as to see Autumn to her home safely? I do not think we will be visiting the dragons until tomorrow with this detour, so I will not require your services for the rest of the evening. And I believe you are more than capable of dealing with a single mercenary without me."

From beneath his hood, Bazil felt better for the decision made. There were few enough cities along the border where the races intermingled and dragon raids relatively minimal to none. To watch for winged giants from the skies when one could not fully see them was a nightmare of its own. One he had to get over living out here.

Aside from that these cities were easier to traverse through. The mix of types of people were greater and he moved around with more ease and less questioning, fewer stops and taunts. Less using of force to prove that anyone's time should be spent elsewhere. He did not mingle much, however, and thus did not give anyone much opportunity to taunt or anything else as he dug into his work or studies.

"I will do so, sir," Bazil said with a nod, rising from his seat and offering his arm once again to the fae woman in turn as requested.

page 2177
Jenannen
“In that regard you have my thanks,” she inclined her head to Therris in appreciation. At his relief she wondered if perhaps the Baroness that Seist was so concerned about had not hoped to further tension between fae and man. She intended to ask him once they were outside the temple.

Autumn regarded Seist coolly as he suggested that there was more to be said in private with the priest. “I believe there is more to be said between us as well,” she watched Seist gauging his reaction as she addressed him, “I am content to wait.” There was a great deal more than prospective tension between fae and man that she wished to discuss with him. Answers to be gained that did not seem likely to be granted by Bazil.

She did not take Bazil’s hand nor did she dismiss him to leave without her.

page 2178

"There is indeed," Seist said gravely in return, "I will find you in the morning."

And he turned back to High Priest Therris and sat down again to talk more.

((bowing out temporarily. I'll post what all Seist gets up to though, when the time is right))

page 2178
Jenannen
“How to you propose to do that?” Surely he had not forgotten that she had ways of not being found or that it was prudent that she not be.

((Token yespls? whee ))

page 2178

"Oh!" Seist twisted in his chair and regarded her a moment. "Yes, of course, I'm sorry. I was figuring I could just ask Bazil later, but just in case... here. Take this. It's strongly linked to me and I'll be able to find it wherever it is. Just don't show anyone you have it."

And he pulled the priesthood medallion off his neck and handed it to her. Behind him, High Priest Therris seemed torn between shocked and amused, while in the corner the acolyte seemed positively appalled. The medallion was about two inches in diameter and was cast in bronze. On one side was Dues with his four eyes and on the other, Frain with her blindfold, her hands pressed together in front of her chest.

page 2179

The hood shook from side to side just enough to be seen as he continued to stand with his arm raised and waiting.

((Filler to make sure no one is waiting on him.))

((By the by how far away is the fae forest from the city/town they were in?))

((I'm not a good judge of distance by pre-car standards... it's going to be a couple days travel at the least though.))

As Seist regarded her Autumn offered him a coy smile. “Thank you,” she cooed as she accepted his medallion; to her ears her imitation of doves was lacking, but she had learned that to most humans it was quite impressive. Autumn was tempted to wink at Therris, but thought better of it. He had shown her nothing but courtesy and respect and she did not want to upset things now.

With a meaningful glance of acknowledgement at Seist Autumn placed the medallion about her neck and let it fall under her shirt.

She returned to Bazil’s side and accepted his arm. “Shall we?”

page 2180

As directed, Bazil led the lady fae out of the temple and to the steps. The sky was beginning to darken at this point, the sun barely being seen over the horizon and quickly sinking. With fewer carts traveling in the eve, the two resigned to walking though neither seemed to mind. Both were accustomed to traveling by foot through the city; both looking more casual than most would at such hours when the shadows grew. Autumn was not being let by Bazil's arm this far away from the temple as formality did not require it and necessity might call upon their arms for other demands such as fighting back if attacked again.

"To what road do we turn now, m'am?" Bazil said waiting for another direction. "How far out must you travel yet?" The night seemed not to bother the man in the least, or if it did, it was just as much bother as the day was.

page 2180
Jenannen
Autumn was glad to discover that Bazil, too, preferred to make the return trip afoot. She had pondered asking if he could drive the cart but decided that she really didn’t care to find out from experience should he offer. She did not know how to drive a cart, nor ride a tamed horse for that matter. While she had no particular disliking for domestic animals the lacking rapport left her ill at ease.

As they moved away from the temple and Bazil had withdrawn his arm Autumn let out a sigh of relief, “Please do not take it personally, I am grateful to you for your escort, but I am relieved to be rid of formality.”

At Bazil’s question Autumn answered “I’ve a thought to heed the advice you and Seist have offered and make my way to [forest name], but I don’t think he’d be too happy to discover I’ve run off with this.” She distastefully lifted the chain careful to leave the medallion itself hidden from view. She wished for the first time in a long while that she had a pouch for storing things in. It was not the first she had born an ornamental chain about her neck but it did not mean she wished to keep it there. She hoped that the answers Seist may give would be worth the trouble he was already causing her.

“If I may be sold bold; why did you intervene?” she asked letting her feet follow their own path.

((I don't know the name of the forest so I'll edit after I know.))

page 2180
Jayara
"Because it very well could have escalated into a riot." Was it for the fairy tale damsel in distress? No, and he would not admit to such when it wasn't true. "The men were foolish and risked the populous around them. Yet, what they did say was true. Relations between the dragon district and human one are tense with more dragon raids being recorded elsewhere as a result of what seems to be the war of the fae to the West. I had hoped it to be simply a rumor." A rumor quickly dispelled in one day.

Bazil's staff clicked against the stone as they walked, tapping in rhythm as they walked. "We are heading in the direction of the city wall. Do you have room and board somewhere between here and there?" he inquired, wondering if she meant to leave tonight for these woods she spoke of. "If you worry of the charm and his claim on it, simply return it to him upon the morrow when you meet with him again." Better sense told him to offer to take it back to Seist then and there, but Seist seemed to speak with the fae woman again.

((They are actually still in Downswood. It is just split into different quarters. (ie: dragon, human, merchant, etc)))

page 2180
Jenannen
“You entered the fray when so many were content to remain onlookers. For as much as I know of humans I find there is always more to be learned.” Her tone was contemplative. Autumn too had wondered about the rumored war and had, betimes, pondered asking the forest what it could tell her of events therein. She felt an unexpected longing to immerse herself in the comforts that her forest had offered her. She pondered handing Bazil the medallion Seist had given her and simply fleeing the city, but she was surprised to discover that she wanted to see Seist again. Gods help me, she thought as she let go of the chain about her neck she had absently been fiddling with. She laughed aloud at the irony as it occurred to her.

“The other side of the wall is my destination,” she said vaguely. “You mean he may intend for me to do otherwise?” she asked appalled. The thought that he would not take back his medallion had not occurred to her. That he could potentially find her at his will beyond the morrow was reprehensible.

page 2181
Jayara
Actually, he wondered if she had intended to do otherwise. "The priest's intentions are unknown to me." Giving up the medallion was unusual to say the least, he thought as he her the light clink of metal. "I would not worry of it though lest you go and do something rash between the time now and next we meet." Such as mock the Twins, start killing humans, threaten him, he thought to himself as he tried to decide what would irk the mage priest.

"If the other side of the wall you must go, then I will see you to the wall's gate before parting."

“Like seek out my undetained assailant and wind up captured?” she jested. “I’m not that brash.” She suspected that her secondary reference to not being a brittle piece of wood would go undetected, but then that was part of the fun of it.

“And where are you to go? I do not wish to put you out and I am not unfamiliar with the city.,” she replied graciously. She suspected it would not be that easy. Seist had asked Bazil to see her safely “home” and that he seemed content to merely see her to the gate would likely be what she had to settle for. Besides did she really want to risk that she would not be found again and this time with a greater number of men more prepared for her. They had not seemed to expect her capable of wielding her staff as she was. The second man had been surprised when she had rooted herself to the ground, hadn’t he? She wasn’t a fighter and rerunning the battle in her head would yield no answers for her; this she knew and accepted.

Still the questions remained about what had drawn their attention to her in the first place. Why fae-poison and not something racially specific? Though she hadn’t noticed them when she had left she was now fairly certain that they had followed her from Ardja’s Floral Shoppe. It was likely that they knew she worked there. Had they been in the shoppe before? Did they expect her to be more timid and less inclined to fight back?

And so she was lost in her thoughts once again.

((If Bazil actually does reply to her about where he’s to go she’ll only half be paying attention. So yes, she’s not that brash, but she is that easily caught up in her thoughts and accustomed to going unnoticed.))

page 2182
Jayara
Her going after the other attacker had not crossed his mind, but now he wondered if she would not keep the idea in mind should the fae woman see him again - at least outside the city limits. He had more been thinking along the lines of her angering Seist in some fashion. Fae were known to be tricksy, not naive, after all.

"I will travel back into the city where I reside." He had no intention of being specific there. Nor did he have any intention of going outside the city, regardless of Bazil's request to escort her to the ambiguous 'home'. His employers were paying him to attend to the margrave, not the fae. Escorting to the wall was reasonable enough. "Unfortunately, this makes meeting up tomorrow a little more difficult as you do not reside within the walls. If you would like, I could meet you at the wall before high sun and travel with you back inward through the city to wherever Seist would prefer to speak with you."

page 2182
Jenannen
“Mmm,” she acknowledged his words without replying. She had heard every word, but was not listening. She really didn’t want to come back into the city tomorrow. Unfortunately she was expected at work tomorrow. Would it be better to let Ardja know what had happened or would that only worry her more? Autumn didn’t want her presence, or lack of it, to cause trouble for Ardja. The men had not harmed the onlookers; they had only been interested in her. Perhaps the best she could offer Ardja was that she would not be returning to work.

She stopped and turned to face Bazil, “I’ve business yet to conclude before I am done with this city.” She regarded Bazil intently, offering no further direction or clarification.

page 2182
Jayara
How troublesome. No wonder those two men had been able to come upon her.

"I would recommend attending to said business after meeting with Priest Seist tomorrow. After such time chances are I will not be attending you, and you can conduct your business with privacy." Unless she was speaking of business after hours, tonight, something that was a bit questionable. Another fae maybe? "Anything more tonight is probably not a wise time to be completing any other business."

page 2183
Jenannen
“I am expected at work tomorrow; but for Ardja’s safety, as well as my own, I think it best if I am no longer to be found there. She’s a sweet woman who has less experience with trouble than I do,” Autumn’s voice was warm when she spoke of Ardja. Ardja had not been put off by her being fae and had taken her as an individual as so many humans had not. Not only that but Ardja had been a quick study in the things that Autumn had taught her. She loved the flowers, in her own way, as much as Autumn did.

“I do not wish to leave my business with her unconcluded until after Seist has found me tomorrow.” She moved now in the direction of Ardja’s home. While she did not know her way around the entire city she did know how to orient herself to her destination.

((Not that you have to, but feel free to have Bazil correct her direction, she could find it on her own, but not necessarily taking the safest path. Or he can follow her and keep an eye out for trouble. I’m also cool with Bazil knowing Ardja…))

page 2185
Jayara
Bazil stood still, letting the fae woman walk alone a few paces. When she did not turn around, he shook his head and began to follow. It was only a few silent minutes later that he spoke up.

"The business that you work for is not in this direction." He did not frequent this floral shop Autumn spoke of nor know of its owner Ardja, but he did have an idea of its general location - because of Autumn. The fight had not been the first time he had noticed her around the city, and to him, she had stood out plenty. He just had not know what she was at the time. "You need to be taking the street we passed three buildings back."

“It is not to the shoppe that I now head, Ardja left the same time as did I. She will be home with her husband now,” Autumn said gently. Tying to ease the tension she offered after a few steps, “I am well spoken for a cause, but I am not much of a conversationalist,” her tone a quiet apology.

((By the by in all of this she has not mentioned being a dryad. So I’m a little confused at what he now knows he did not before; I thought from the get-go her recognized her and her magic as fae.))

page 2185
Jayara
"Then I will follow until you return to the wall," Bazil spoke.

((Honestly, there is little else for Bazil to do here. He will for the most part stay out of the way. So I would just fast forward to either you ditching him as you considered or going ahead to the wall. At this point, since no time frame has been offered by Autumn as to when to meet up at the wall to escort her inward, Bazil will not meet with her at the wall unless you say they agree to something.

No where did I mention that Bazil knew she was a dryad so I am unsure what you are speaking of. Being a dryad or her mentioning such has nothing to do with it his ability anyways. Being fae - does. If you are concerned, then pm me and we will discuss this in private.))

page 2187
Jenannen
“Very well,” she acknowledged.

She made her way to Ardja’s residence via the most direct route she was able to navigate. Once there Ardja invited them in and offered her guests some tea. Bazil politely declined and Autumn accepted following Ardja into the kitchen. Ardja engaged Autumn in small talk while the water boiled. As the tea steeped Autumn offered; “My path no longer leads me to your shoppe. I have been with you longer, already, than I had expected and I thank you for the kindness you have shown me.”

Ardja was accustomed by now to Autumn’s indirect answers and opted merely to embraced the fae. Atumn returned the embrace and kept the proceeding conversation brief. After Autumn finished her tea she left with Bazil and the two traveled in silence. Autumn once more lost in her thoughts followed Bazil’s lead to the city gate.

Seist's conversation with the high priest was both productive and somewhat distressing. He had known that Baroness Yvette was doing curious things but had no idea just so far her reach had stretched. She even played games with the temple of Lahmear. His head spinning with matters of politics and a priest's plea for help, he took his leave of the temple well after sundown. He'd have to find a way to abandon both Bazil and Autumn. The former was too observant and he needed his intentions to go unnoticed - especially now. The latter was too much of an unknown element and he did not wish to complicate anyone else into this. Thankfully, it would be easy to do. Bazil would be left behind when he left Downswood and the fae girl would surely return to the forest now.

Still, there was something he needed to do. He carried with him the escaped thug's sword, his thumb pressed tight against the metal of the hilt. Swords were such... intimate things. When a person lived by the sword they were even more so, to the point where they were almost indistinguishable from the person from a magical standpoint. And Seist was oh so good at tracking spells. He found the man walking the street in the outer ring of the city. It wasn't the slums but nor was it the most reputable part of town, catering to a clientele that had money and wanted to go unremarked. He probably planned to slip out first thing in the morning and was finishing up his affairs before he left Downswood. Seist tailed him for a short time as the street grew more empty and desolate. Finally, the man gave the priest the opportunity he'd been waiting for. The thug seemed to be growing more desperate and Seist smiled to himself - he was checking with fences, probably hoping his sword had been snatched by a street urchin and promptly sold off. He was getting careless and took a shortcut down a narrow passage between buildings. Seist darted after him and the darkness swallowed them both up, only partly aided by the thick veil of magic Seist dropped over the area to hide what was about to happen from sight, both arcane and human.

He walked gently, the soft soles of his boots making not a sound, and slid a wire free of his belt as he approached. The man paused, like a deer catching wind of the hound, but it was too late then. Seist hooked the wire around his neck and pulled it tight, drawing the man against his chest and then up onto his toes and holding him there. He flailed and Seist grunted as the man's foot struck him in the knee and then an elbow to the ribs. He did not let go though and after a moment the trashing grew quieter and then the body became dead weight, hands hanging limply at either side. Seist held on a bit longer to ensure the breath was truly gone and the life with it before letting him fall heavily to the ground. He knelt over the body, summoning a spark of mage-light to see by, and carefully drew three lines in the dead man's face with the tip of his knife, mirroring his own scars, faint enough that they could be easily missed. Then he slit the man's throat, just over the line the garrote had left. The raw edges of the wound would hide the mark and the bruising. It was one thing to find a body with a slit throat, the work of a common criminal. A professional garrote was cause for more concern. Then, to finish the impression of uncomplicated murder, Seist relieved the man of his valuables. They'd find their way to one of the temples of Marckius at some point, to thank the patron god whose priesthood had trained Seist in their ways.

That done, Seist stood and walked away. He did not look back.

((Seist is going to sleep in the next morning as he's tired from playing assassin. Bazil may have to find him))

-----------------------------------

page 2201
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist woke when the sun was well into the sky. It wasn't quite noon, but it was close. The priest groaned and reluctantly sat up in bed, still feeling tired from his... errand... last night. Briefly, he wondered if the body had been found yet. There was an accompanying stab of fear at that thought, a familiar sensation that Seist had long since learned to ignore. If he was ever caught, he'd be caught and there was nothing he could do about it besides take what precautions he could.

Besides, he had other things to attend to. He focused briefly, reaching out a tendril of magic to track the general location of his priesthood pendant. There was - nothing. Frowning, Seist tried again and was once more disappointed. The worry came rushing back full-force once more and Seist had to actively pause and remind himself that just because he couldn't locate his priesthood amulet it didn't mean that there'd be a warrior-priest of Lahmear hunting him down just yet. Totally unrelated.

"Blasted fae," Seist muttered, pulling on his boots, "Probably thinks it's funny."

He was more bothered by the fact his magic was being foiled than by the idea that harm may have come to her. She was fae though, he couldn't be too surprised by this. Still. It was irritating.

In a foul mood, Seist made for the door. Breakfast would help and then he could get to work tracking down his wayward pendant. He yanked the door open with a bit more force than needed in his ire.

page 2202
Jayara
Already Bazil was standing opposite the door, waiting in the same cloak of green with hood drawn. His hands were tucked together in their sleeves, the staff they sometimes carried upon his back.

"Shall I be called upon for anything? A fresh pitcher and a cloth, perhaps?" Bazil asked, skipping any sort of good day pleasantries. Seist's heavy footsteps and the rough handling of the latch had hinted that it would be best otherwise. After years of sleepy charges, one learned to let the nobles wake in the fashion they chose unless they requested otherwise.

He was mostly awake at this point, himself. After seeing the fae woman off, Bazil had diverted to his own abode, slept some before the dawn. Waking early, he had made one little diversion to speak with his employer before arriving at the dragon district again to wait for Seist to rouse.

Autumn awoke the next morning to the warmth of the sunlight four hours after sun up. The leaves of her tree trembled slightly as if stirred by a slight breeze when she stretched. She stepped out of her tree and stretched once again lifting her face to the sun and smiling. She closed her eyes and concentrated for a moment; the local flora told her that no one had been with in a hundred yards of her tree since she had settled in to rest last night.

She was somewhat surprised but grateful that no one had been around when she had woken. Upon parting last night Siest had told her of the medallion: “It's strongly linked to me and I'll be able to find it wherever it is. Just don't show anyone you have it.” The second part of that was easy enough, but she had rather expected to wake to company this morning due to the first. She wondered if she should wait for Seist to come find her so she could give him back his medallion, but if he had wanted it back quickly surely he would have come for it by now. Best not linger and be found by more of the Baroness’ men.

While searching for a nice plot of land last night Autumn had decided that she would take Seist and Bazil’s advice and return to the forest. She had no intention of staying long, but it seemed wise to put some distance between herself and anyone who may be interested in her capture. Knowledge of what caused the unrest in the forest would be useful, and perhaps she would even take the time to visit her sisters. Seist could find her at his leisure. With that she left for the forest asking the flora to mask her passage as she had done last night when leaving the city. No point in making it easy for another greedy human to find her.

page 2202
Kiddo Seanchain
"No, I'm fine," Seist snapped to Bazil's questions, brushing past him in the direction of the common room. Than he stopped, turned on his heel to address Bazil directly. "No, no - no point to rushing about. I don't have to do everything myself... Bazil! You know this town; see if you can find where Autumn frequents and bring me something that belonged to her. I can work magic of my own. In the meantime, I'll see to myself... need to stop by the market for some supplies after breakfast..."

And the priest started off towards the stairs again. He stopped once more before getting there.

"Bazil," he said, not turning this time, "Meet me back here at noon, okay?"

((Oh Seist... rolleyes ))

page 2203

"As you request, sir," Bazil bowed, knowing full well Seist was not standing before him. An item of the fae woman's. Since no one had discussed how anyone was to meet up again, he wondered if this is would be the fashion in which it would be accomplished. There were few ideas that filled in the gaps better than that. Unless the priest had discovered something about the fae woman or the fae race itself when he went about business after their parting.

His own specific task would be an easy one. Not only did he have a good idea of the shop the fae woman worked for, but he also knew where the owner of said establishment lived. Being day hours, Bazil started off for the shop. There must have been tools, cleaning cloths, or something of relevance belonging to Autumn during her time there. Ultimately, as the blind man walked through the streets avoiding passers by, he knew what kind of object he would likely find, one that would have a meaningful tie to the fae while she worked.

What would not have been of more focus or care to Autumn where she worked than a plant?

When he arrived at the shop, he patiently awaited for assistance, not wishing to knock anything over in close quarters nor cause a disturbance. It was only fortunate that he had been along with Autumn the night previous, making him at least recognizable. Had he been a complete stranger, it would be more than difficult to catch the woman's attention much less ask for something of Autumn's.

As soon as he would be able to have the attendance of Ardja, he would ask to speak with the woman in back if possible for more privacy, explaining it was tied to the attack of the previous day. The fae woman had talked at some length with her employer. Whether the attack on Autumn was part of that conversation was irrelevant. It would allow him to mention that Autumn had disappeared even though they were to meet today, hinting that Autumn's delay could possibly be caused by the one rogue who had gotten away previously. It may not have been the complete truth, but it was not necessarily a complete lie either.

((@Jen: If you want to rp out the conversation between Ardja and Bazil, we can, especially if you do not think that Ardja would assist Bazil under that explanation. If you think Ardja would lend or donate something, we can kinda skip ahead. I want to know what Seist is planning. XD Bazil is looking particularly for a plant Autumn may have worked on, though any other semi-personal items such as a work apron are also an option.))

Ardja noticed when Autumn’s companion from the night before entered, but she was already with a customer and had another wandering the shop that she may need to attend to as well. She nodded to him in acknowledgement and continued with the vase arrangement she was putting together for the man she was with presently.

As the second of her customers left the shop Ardja approached Bazil, and inquired “What can I help you with?” At Bazil’s request Ardja took him back into the greenhouse for privacy, but she left the door open so she could hear the bells on the shop door should another customer enter. She listened as Bazil explained about the attack which Autumn had not mentioned and the possibility that she may have been captured.

“Just like that girl to not mention to me that there’d been trouble. An object that…” just then the bells on the door jingled and Ardja excused herself to attend to her customer. A quick sale of a premade arrangement and she returned to Bazil. “You know my business really picked up after she came to work here,” she smiled, “I’m going to miss that girl.” Ardja set to watering the plants in the greenhouse as she spoke; “ Ah, but you were asking about an object of hers. I’m afraid I can’t help you there; girl didn’t value things the way that we do. More than once I caught her giving away her wages and the tools here were communal. She never wore an apron and she’s worked with every plant in the shop just as I have and just as my other employees have.”

page 2205

"If she tended to them all, then I will buy which ever plant she tended to most and most recently. It would be preferable if it was a type of plant that she favored over another and or one that she specifically arranged." Bazil realized even before arriving that a fae would probably not be as materialistic as a human might be. If what the woman said was true about the shop's sales, then Autumn did have an affect on the plants and the plants would carry traces of it. If he could not gather anything more specific than that, then so be it. He would not waste his time here and possibly draw more attention to this location than what the fae might have already done. Already he had other ideas. "Hopefully it is something small," he added, doubting it. If the fae woman had a penchant for plants, it would not be unusual to think that they might be larger and fuller of bloom for all her attention.

Ardja looked thoughtful for a minute, “Autumn didn’t much care to arrange the cut flowers though the arrangements she put her hand to were beautiful. There’s a fellow that comes here weekly and he insists that Autumn attend him. Even got a young man that seems to be taken with her, but she’s oblivious to ‘im,” Ardja chuckled and continued, “not many humans take a fancy to the fae folk you know. Now let me think,” Ardja bent over and smelled the lavender plant that she was watering. “Last night the two of us were here together until close and we were working on the miniatures while we were talking about…” Ardja’s cheeks flushed and she hurried on, “well, never you mind what we were talking about. It was my bit of conversation anyway. She’s a quiet girl you know. Good listener.” Ardja let the conversation lapse as she made her way to the miniatures.

“Which would you like?” Ardja asked with a sweeping gesture indicating the plants that she and Autumn had been working on last night.

page 2205
Jayara
Bazil had no comment to make regarding humans and fae folk. Most folk had likely not met one, including himself before Autumn had come. And in the current time frame, yes, rumors had swayed the populous as the fae were taking on the role of stirring up the dragons, adding an undeniable negative impact on their mythical reputation. He did not see the race of fae coming any time soon to fight that claim.

Regardless of her blush, embarrassment tinged the woman's voice hinting another topic that Bazil had no interest in delving into, appreciative when Ardja changed the topic back to the plant life in the shop. Choosing not to waste more time in a location with no answers, he asked if the woman would simply pick a small but durable plant, the roots bagged so that it could be easily carried. He paid his coin, thanked the business woman for her time, and hurried off on his way back to the restpoint where Seist had taken room. He was still going to be early, but that would only give him time to sit and eat before meeting again.

Bazil was waiting at the doorway to Seist's room when high sun arrived.

page 2206

Ardja looked over the miniatures* she and Autumn had been grooming last night and selected one. She boxed the planter before bagging it as requested. She took Bazil’s coin and thanked him for his business.

After Bazil was gone Ardja let out a sigh of relief. The man had not accepted her tea last night and Autumn had kept their conversation away from him. She wasn’t sure what Autumn was mixed up in now, but she hadn’t been about to hand over an easy means of tracking the girl. How was she to know that Autumn hadn’t simply escaped from this man? He had, after all, refused tea last night no matter how politely done. While it hadn’t been particularly worrisome last night it just didn’t sit right with Ardja today.

While it was true that both she and Autumn had been working on the miniatures last night Autumn hadn’t been particularly attentive seeing as how she had been caught up in Ardja’s own revelry about her newly discovered pregnancy. Ardja wasn’t sure that really said much where Autumn was concerned though, everything that Autumn touched flourished and even the cut flowers she arranged seemed to hold up longer. Still the miniatures were Ardja’s own delight; it seemed that fae women (or at least Autumn) didn’t have the same inborn attraction to small plants and animals that most human women did.

While Ardja didn’t know much about magic herself her husband was a highly respected physician well versed in both magical and non-magical means of treating his patients. Her husband had attended search parties where magical means of tracking were used. Ardja wasn’t sure just how the tracking worked but she hoped that she hadn’t just handed Autumn over to someone that Autumn didn’t want finding her. She wanted to do right by the sweet shy girl she knew.

((*For the purposed of what they were working on last night think bonsai trees. Miniatures would also include, in Ardja’s mind, things like miniature roses and such.))

(( Kiddo: You’re welcome to have Ardja have handed over a maple miniature—she doesn’t know that Autumn’s a maple— and we could say that was the last one that Autunmn was working on last night. Ardja’s hope, however, was that the tracking spell would lead back to her rather than to Atutumn. I, personally, don’t have a preference for which way it goes.))

Seist was a touch late to their meeting, but he seemed in good spirits nonetheless. He dumped a satchel on the table downstairs and then looked around the sparse common room. Most people had business to attend to during the day so he'd have most of the room to himself. Not seeing Bazil, he stuck he head up the stairwell to check.

"Ah!" he called to him, "Downstairs. I found everything I need - well, most everything. Enough to make do. The Borderlands never ceases to surprise me with just how active a magical community there is, though it is rather... unconventional. But improvisation is good for the mind, you know. Did you find something of Autumn's?"

The priest was obviously excited, for his chatter was fast and he hardly paused for breath. Losing his amulet to Autumn didn't seem to bother him - indeed, the priest seemed to be acting as if this were some sort of new and interesting game.

page 2206
Jayara
"Improvisation is everything to the blind," Bazil chuckled more to himself as he gauged the movements of excited mage priest before heading for the stairs.

"Fae is as Fae are. I decided to check with her employer who was surprised at hearing about Autumn's run in despite speaking with her last night. Unsurprisingly there is little left behind other than the plant life she tended at a greenery store," Bazil said as he stepped up to the table and held up the wrapped dirt and plant. "Or if there is, her employer is not going to give it up to a stranger being suspicious which I cannot blame her in this current climate. Even so, I believe I may have one better - something that has been within reach the entire time. I just need but to borrow your eyes." Setting his staff aside, he began to disrobe, pulling off the classic green robe and holding it out toward Seist. He now stood there, colorless eyes unhidden, while standing in a grey gi with something much like a cloth blindfold tied loosely around his neck.

"The last person to be in direct contact with Autumn aside from her employer was myself, between escorting and carrying her. While I cannot be certain as I could not look, I had the impression that our fae woman may have taken a hit or two. If you would be so obliged to look my robe over for any stains or traces of the fae woman remaining on it. You may find the same regarding the sword you kept belonging to the other attacker as well."

((Yeah... the flower shop, to Bazil, was more an info run and to see if there was something gather more than Autumn's... sap. lol
Edit in: Kiddo: Oh hey, look! Another moment where Seist's flirty side and magic interests compete? XD ))

page 2207
Kiddo Seanchain
Seists eyes went wide for a moment and he mutely accepted the green robe from Bazil. He turned it over in his hands a couple times, his gaze occasionally flickering from Bazil to the robe and back again. Then he folded it and turned his attention fully on the blind attendant.

"This will do in conjunction with the plant," he said demurely, "She is fae, so she will have a strong tie to the earth. I believe I see a strand of long hair on this as well, so that shall help. Not as much as the plant, truth be told, as personal effects will have a greater emotional investment than an errant piece of hair or a drop or two of blood. Well. In some circumstances that's not the case, but it requires the hair or blood to be obtained in a manner that gives it meaning - willing or unwilling sacrifice, for instance."

Then he dropped the pristine, clinical tone.

"I suppose I could return this to you," he added, hefting the robe with one hand. Then he turned and walked away, back towards the common room downstairs, still carrying Bazil's robe, grinning like a fiend.

At least the trip had not been a total waste. This could be interesting... more so now with the mage priest in higher spirits than the few hours earlier.

"I suppose you could," Bazil added with half breath in laugh and a raised blonde eyebrow as he listened to the mage scamper off. "But you have other plans, I can tell," he called after Seist as he grabbed his staff and followed into the common room, slowing down as soon as he reached the more open space, tips of his fingers out to the sides not far from his leg as he walked toward the one who had taken his robe, setting the plant on the table after he reached it. "I must say, if you found a powder or the like that has put you in such high spirits while you were out, I might have to inquire as to who the dealer is," he chuckled again. There were a couple different uses he could think of for such a thing. "But aside from that, what does it take to accomplish your little feat with the plant and robe, or is this something not for myself to know?"

page 2207
Kiddo Seanchain
"I enjoy tracking spells," Seist replied, sounding a bit wounded, "I get things stolen from me, you see, because nobles are good targets for pickpockets. I always enjoy catching up with them and taking back my things. Not hurting anyone, mind you - it's my tribute to Marckius, from whose priesthood came my tutors while growing up. They taught me to revere the game of the underbelly."

He laughed softly and set the robe on the table, opposite the plant. Then he took out a charcoal and started drawing lines connecting them, edged with runes.

"Besides, I get to see what you look like underneath those robes. That would cheer anyone up - well, almost anyone. Namely, the ladies and those sensible few of the male persuasion that can appreciate such things."

((I'd just like to say that I am going to try not to put Kocerou and Seist in the same room))

page 2207

Hearing the scratching of something written on wood, he frowned for a moment. Maybe there would be something left of the writing once the spell was cast. If not, maybe he could coax the mage in to redrawing a copy later or guide his hand in the rotes.

Hearing the new comments, Bazil instantly smirked and pointed the tip of his staff at him. "You must be desperate if you think that after just a robe, sir." Intrigued by this new 'game' of words the mage had decided to play, he wondered how far the self-declared noble was willing to place his bravado. "And even then after all, sight is not everything. Maybe you should become a masseur for a day. There may be something even for you there."

((Now that they are both in the Border, have fun with that. It's like keeping Risen away from RJ. It's just going to happen.))

page 2207
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist had to wait to reply, focusing instead on his runes as he completed the circle. He sealed the drawings with a flourish, imbuing the lines with his magic as he did so. The circle pulsed once with light and then lay dormant. Seist set to unbuttoning the hem of his sleeves and pushing them up past the elbow.

"Indulge me. I've been traveling for a long while and this is the first I haven't been exhausted from the road in weeks. My eyes are no longer clouded with the dust of the road. But you bring up an... intriguing... proposal. Thought I doubt I'd be as able with my hands as you seem to be."

The priest rummaged in the things he had bought at the market and came up with an empty vial, a skein of milk, and a bowl. He poured the milk into the bowl and set that in the middle of the circle. Then he took a knife and pricked his finger with the tip, squeezing the wound above the vial so that a few drops of his blood fell inside.

"Typically, I would use water," he said, "as the focus there. But fae are a bit odd and for some reason, milk seems to work better. I have no idea if that's because there are some properties that relate it to their race or because there's enough stories about them asking for a bowl of milk from random farmers and housewives that it's lodged itself into the fabric of magic. Either way, I intend to use it. No more banter for a moment, I need to focus."

Seist placed both hands on the table, the vial cupped under one palm. He drew his magic to himself and it hovered there, like a cloud over him, and then he slipped it into the circle. The entire set of runes fairly hummed with power, glowing white and the light reflected on Seist's tanned cheeks and his eyes were unnaturally bright. The power wound through both the robe and the plant and then converged on the bowl. The light died away. The power faded and dissipated like morning fog. Seist fell back into a chair with a heavy sigh of relief, the spell cast and done. Then he leaned forwards, carefully filling the vial with the milk, mixing it with his blood to form a sort of pinkish liquid before capping it off.

((and I'm off to bed. Jen, Kocerou is a now-exiled fae Prince whose orientation is "yes". RJ is Ranger Jay, a scion of the Black Swan, who is a creature intent on disrupting the natural order of the world. Risen is a scion of the Blessed Path, which is an entity intent on upholding the natural order of the world))

page 2208

"Good sir, what am I hired for other than to 'indulge'?" Bazil said with a flourished bow. And yet from earlier words it seemed that the heavy pace of travel would continue yet farther north. He was certainly being taken far from home. "As long as you enjoy it, being able means little," he said as he came around to the side of the table Seist was working on, picking up sounds of glass, something sloshy, and something else taken and returned upon his belt, trying to place each sound and their location. While the sloshing was soon explained, the sound of hollow glass and what he could only guess was a simple tool still puzzled him. He could derive that the tool only needed one hand to use and no additional manipulation. He kept his silence, however, when the mage priest said to be and backed up only enough to give more breathing room.

When the spell became active, Bazil's eyes darted about quickly, pupils unchanged, scrutinizing the rune, script, and pattern looking over the table and the items on top of it with what little time there was. When Seist stepped back from the table, Bazil took the opportunity to take his spot, standing over the table, palm open and hovering just above a portion of the charcoal writing, seemingly intent on studying. "The glass and what it was that you pulled from your belt, what use did either item have? The first a container and the second..." He knew Seist had carried a dagger of some sort after cornering one of Autumn's attackers with one, but was that what he had grabbed or was there something else that could fit what he heard?

((*I'm assuming belt for simplicity's sake as it was not mentioned where the knife came from. If from somewhere else, I'll alter as such afterwards as that is the least of importance to the line.))

page 2209
Kiddo Seanchain
"The glass is an empty vial, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. I added a drop of my own blood into it, to give me something to focus on, and then added the imbued milk, to focus on Autumn with. The milk will pull towards her and I will be able to sense that pull. The other item you heard was my knife, to get the blood."

He put this away and pulled loose a thong that was already tied around his neck, wrapping it around the neck of the vial and making it fast.

"Let me get this mess cleaned up and then we'll go after her," he said, "I got a good track on this already. She's heading east and we should be able to catch her easily if we have horses. Bazil, I'll not ask me to accompany further at this point. This task is my own and I'll not take you from your city. But if you would, please go make my horse ready while I clear away these runes."

Bazil made more of a hurried notion to read the rest of the writing. "It is not my city," he said almost too bluntly as he moved to a different side of the table allowing Seist access to clean, picking up his robe as he came around to it. "And that is a lot of 'we' speak before giving me the option," Bazil chuckled. "For what it amounts to, unless you are outright in traveling alone, I would like to see that said fae did not cross any more trouble with fortune-hunters. Unless the High Priest of Lahmear has found anything different from the man incarcerated, we know not about his partner's whereabouts or if that was his only partner. After stepping up yesterday in the streets, I would hate to see such an effort wasted. If their sponsor was willing to supply them with fae powder, what else might hey have carried?"

Stepping back, he slipped on the robe, straightening it over his frame. "But yes, I will go see to your horse, though I suppose that would mean I should also find one."

page 2209
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist let Bazil go with some dismay at his words. He wasn't terribly keen on having a companion, but he had to admit that it probably wouldn't hurt for now. Not until he got involved deeper with his usual affairs. He'd have to dismiss Bazil then for certain, even if he did like the man. Still, he had to wonder just what the blind man had meant by this not being his city and why exactly he was so keen to stick close to the priest. Seist shook his head in astonishment. Most of his retainers were happy to keep their distance.

After cleaning away his runes, Seist headed outside to the stable. The vial hung warm against his chest, hidden under his tunic, and he could feel the thin line of power that pulled him towards the fae-girl, like a sort of homesickness. He walked over and took the reins of his horse, stroking its nose.

"She's most likely on foot, so we shouldn't have any trouble catching up," Seist said, "And Bazil? I scryed out the second attacker earlier this morning and found nothing. He's either found someone very capable to hide him or he's dead. From what I know of this city's mages, I would suspect the latter."

The priest swung himself up into the saddle and pointed his horse towards the east.

"Take us the quickest way to the gate," he said.

page 2210

Autumn was in no particular hurry to get to the forest but neither did she feel like lingering near Downswood when she had a new destination in mind. Her pace was a brisk walk (one that she could easily maintain for a great distance over open land) and she listened for any sound of a wild mount that she may be able to persuade to her service. A subconscious veil of magic would suggest to any that she may encounter in her journey that her presence was of little or no import; that she be overlooked and passed by then forgotten as if she had not been there at all.

((I think I have a slight preference for her not finding a mount, but I'm not opposed to her finding a wild horse or something if you wanna have her closer to the forest when Seist catches up to her—which could be a useful option if we want to have her meet the newly exciled prince while keeping Seist away from him. Not saying that we have to, just tossing out ideas.))

page 2223
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist pushed the horses, but not recklessly so. He did not attempt to converse while they road, indeed, such a task would be difficult with the horses moving as they were across the land. The necklace he wore tucked under his tunic pulled him in the direction Autumn had gone, and as he rode, his irritation grew. A day's worth of travel time lost because some ridiculous fae couldn't just return his pendant and be done with it. Hadn't he done plenty for her? He'd even slit someone's throat in a backalley. The fae were not known for gratitude, however, and Seist sternly told himself he'd do well to remember that in the future.

((Jenn, if you're ready for them to catch up you can have Autumn hear the hooves of the horses))

page 2224
Jenannen
Autumn heard the approach of hooves and stopped to listen for a moment. Domestic, she thought mildly disappointed as she resumed walking; she saw no reason to do otherwise. Odds were that the horses bore unknown men to an unknown destination and they would pass her by. If the two horses bore men who were after her they would find her highly more capable of defending herself outside the city where her ties to nature were stronger.

Her magic, subconscious on a level with breathing, remained active. If she was being sought out she would be found, but were she not it would be as if she were not there.

page 2225
Kiddo Seanchain
As the two rode within eyeshot of Autumn, Seist rose up in his stirrups to get a better look. They'd passed a handful of people earlier and the priest had been starting to wonder if perhaps his tracking spell had gone wrong - but no, it was pulling stronger than ever now, like the thought of something left undone in the back of his head, and here was a solitary figure on the road. Not many traveled alone in the Borderlands, not unless they considered themselves quite a capable fighter.

"Bazil, how do you think we should handle this?" Seist asked, pulling his horse into a slow trot, "I must confess I have little understanding of fae nature."

page 2225

Bazil's horse stomped the ground. Muffled words came from the bowed and hooded rider behind Seist followed by a ripple of magic briefly rolling across his skin and reaching beyond.

Bazil pondered, placing a knuckle to the tip of his nose. Around them there was magic - and yet there wasn't, a feeling akin to running one's fingers through oil and water in the same bowl. Both distinct but yet nearly inseparable. The sense was simultaneously intriguing and frustrating.

Nudging his horse to come along side the mage priest's, Bazil spoke, "Nothing stands out, and yet it all does. I say we should have tracked your medallion instead of the fae woman. There is no certainty that she still carries the symbol with her." Then again, had the fae woman parted with it already, anything could have happened to it and there would be no guarantee that it was in hands more difficult to pry open. "I think your charm does lead you correctly though. Something here is... off. But it may be best if I leave. I know nothing about fae kind, but that of her is another. It was just yesterday that she was put on the defensive by two men. Both of us present may retrieve those memories, especially if she is encountered alone. From what time was spent in the woman's presence, I'm but another human to this 'Autumn' as was made apparent the past hours in her acquaintance. What interest there is has been has been in you, Priest Seist, for good or ill, since our chance meet with her. She may reappear to you if I leave."

All had been said in truth as far as he was concerned. Though backing away in such a manner did not sit well against that of the unusual magic that seemed to envelope the area around them, Bazil did believe Seist overwhelmingly capable regardless. "So as you wished before, I will leave you be and return to the city," Bazil said with a nod. All he had wanted to know was if the fae woman's disappearance had been related to the activity of the previous day. Being as far out as they were, however, chances were that such danger coming to the fae had been unlikely, his interest mostly satisfied.

((Assume he departs unless further roped in.))

page 2226
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist listened intently to Bazil's assessment and then nodded his agreement with parting ways. It would be quite intimidating with the two of them, and Seist had no intention of bullying the fae. He just wanted his priesthood medallion back and wanted to know why he couldn't trace its presence. He spurred his horse forwards, approaching Autumn at a brisk pace, intending to draw up short a safe distance away.

page 2226
Jenannen
Having continued listening even as she walked Autumn heard one of the two horses depart as the other approached at a brisk pace. Her heart raced. They had found her and one run off to report? One on one it would be worth the extra effort to preserve the rider for questioning. She had hoped that Seist would be able to provide her with answers, but if she could get the information directly that would be preferential.

Seist, she thought as her heart raced in an unfamiliar manner. What if it were he come for his pendant? He had said he could find it wherever; Autumn flushed at the thought. It had been foolishness on her part to place it as she had.

If it were not Seist she could not afford this distraction. She pushed aside all thoughts save those of the approaching rider and mired the ground before the mount carefully deepening the muddied earth so as to not injure the horse but to sharply impede approach. She wished for the umpteenth time since leaving her forest for the world of man that she could communicate with domestic animals as she could with wild; it would make things considerably easier for her at times like this.

page 2234
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist pulled the horse up short, sensing the flow of fae magic before him, muddying the currents of power. The effect wasn't immediately obvious, but he still hesitated, frowning sharply as his scarred eyes attempted to separate the active fae magic from the benign natural currents of the world. His horse nervously stamped beneath him and he gave it a bit of slack in the reins, allowing it to back up. Autumn was within bow-shot, close enough to call to, but he hesitated to draw any nearer. Not with what Bazil had said and with some spell he hadn't identified active.

"Fae," he called to her, "I wish for my pendant back."

page 2235
Jenannen
“Fae”, she echoed his word choice in her mind angrily. Why did it bother her when he addressed her so? It was not as though she was unaccustomed to being referred to as ‘fae,’ and it was not as though he spoke it derogatorily. There were so many unknowns with this priest and as much as she had wanted to see him only a moment before, presently she wished it were any but he upon that horse.

“I cannot return it to you at this time, mortal,” she reciprocated his address, with a subtle undercurrent of bitterness. She turned to continue her journey pressing the bog toward horse and rider by feel; here in the open, bare soles upon earth, sight was a pleasure, not a necessity. It would be safer for the horse to simply be overtaken by the bog than to advance into it anyway.

page 2235
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist bit back a sharp reply, angry not at her tone of address, but by her refusal to return his pendant. Why did fae have to be so difficult? Quietly, he cursed himself for ever getting involved. Should have just let Bazil sort things out and then murdered both the bandits at a later time. There had been no need to step in directly... but what was done, was done. He swung himself off the saddle and hissed as his feet sunk into the softening road.

"There's a lot of travelers who use this road," he called to her, already drawing up his magic, "You'll be responsible for a good deal of suffering if you just leave this - merchants with broken wagon wheels, or perhaps even a death if a courier passes by at a gallop."

He knelt, carefully, letting his horse back up and out of the mire on its own. He drew his magic inward to himself and then pulled off one glove, pressing his bare palm into the mud. His magic flowed into it, undoing the strands of spell Autumn had woven, and whispering his own into the road to return it to its normal surface, to draw the moisture out and disperse it into the air. His spell was in direct opposition to Autumn's, and so the touch of his mind was close to hers, a solemn, quiet force, unyielding - but not out of malice, but simply because this was how Seist viewed the world - that others would yield to his will.

Autumn felt Seist’s hand in the mud; his touch on the earth was intimate in a way she had never experienced a human’s touch on her own. As his magic flowed into the earth Autumn was aware of its counter nature to her own, but there was something both foreign and familiar in that touch that made her bolt without a word to the priest.

She relinquished her claim on the earth all together, mired earth and masked passage forgotten. Her only thought was of flight.

page 2238

Seist's magic quickly restored the ground to normal, now that it was unopposed. His head snapped up, startled by the sudden lack of resistance, and at Autumn's flight. Bewildered, he stood and turned, darting to where his horse waited patiently and swinging himself back up into the saddle.

"Bloody batshit insane fae," he cursed, "I swear by the Siblings I will never get involved in their affairs again!"

And he kicked his horse into a gallop after Autumn, all thoughts of Bazil's assessment gone. He swung wide, aiming to cut her off and stop her escape.

page 2241

Seist steered his horse parallel to the fae, wrapping the reins and tying them off so the horse could be allowed to run without being guided. He gripped the saddle with his knees and held tight to the straps with one hand. As he came up close to the fae he leaned out, catching his arm around her chest and hauling her off her feet and up onto the saddle, half-throwing her stomach-down onto it before her. Then he grabbed the back of her shirt with one hand to keep her steady and took up the reins again, drawing the horse back into a canter. He swung it around, back towards the road and the city.

"We're going back to the city," he said, "and you're showing me where you stashed my pendant. Then you can run off for the forest, for all I care."

He spoke with the matter-of-fact manner of someone who was quite used to getting his way.

page 2241

Autumn shrieked in surprise as Seist’s arm wrapper around her hauling her up and across the saddle. His grip on the back of her shirt seemed to be loose enough that she could slip herself out of it and… and what land on the ground for him to come after her again? No, she’d wanted to talk to him, momentary panic aside she still did.

“What?” Autumn’s confusion was obvious in her tone, “you mean your pendant didn’t…” she broke into a relieved sigh mingled with laughter. “Oh.” After a moment her breathy laughter subsided allowing her to continue; “You won’t find your pendant in the city. In fact, I can’t retrieve your pendant there.” She thought better of adding “and wasn’t it your idea for me to run off to the forest?”

page 2241
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist exhaled slowly, carefully bringing his temper back under control. He did not slow his horse, however, nor alter its course, despite what Autumn said.

"Then I hope it'll inconvenience you as much as this has inconvenienced me," he replied, "I know you fae don't care one whit about human gods, but a pendant like that is still not something to toy around with. It was given to me by another priest and do you have any idea just how many priests of Dues and Frain are out there? Very few. So. I'll let you go the moment you relinquish my pendant."

His words were coming fast, clipped and brusque, and he seemed about to continue into a longer tirade, but stopped himself with a sharp breath in.

((She is actually likely to have a rough, not exact, idea of how many priest there are out there. Are there priestess of Dues and Frain as well? Would you mind giving me a rough and/or exact idea?))
((There are priestesses. Seist is using priest in the generic sense. All the gods take both male and female, actually, it's just some tend to have more of one gender due to what their domains are. Dues and Frain are a pretty even split. It's a small number of priests though, as there is no official priesthood or manner of rank. Basically, everyone who can use magic is considered to be under Dues and Frain's jurisdiction - regardless of whether they actively follow them or not - and the priests are also mages that have sworn vows. They sometimes mark their eyes like Seist did, but on the whole it's a very casual thing, each person's devotion is considered to be between them and the deities. So if a handful of people are mages in the world... and only a handful of them are priests... not many are running around.))
((I figured as much with Seist using it in the generic, but Autumn's going to spit something back at Seist to let him know that she does indeed know. I was thinking that numbers (including priest and priestesses) would be a likely way for her to do that. If not numbers is there some onther smarty pants way for her to show him that she does have an idea?
Edit: She loves learning and she's fascinated by humans. Religion is actually an area of "study" that she's pursued to some extent. As with the stuff at Lahmear's (speling?) temple she had an idea of the diety even though she's not a follower.

"While Autumn was not devout to a solitary faith, neither was she faithless nor ignorant of the varying religions. She would offer prayer to Allm each season as she followed her wanderlust and began her travels. Esiar had her thanks each time she was able to protect. Her thoughts turned to The Sibling Gods when she was given opportunity to learn."))
((Hmmm. Well, let's do a random character real fast. In the Borderlands, there's only one priest of Dues and Frain in residence, and he's retired. He keeps his devotion secret and even Seist isn't quite sure where he's living now. She could reference him - I leave the details up to you, because he's literally an on-the-fly character.
If she wanted to be mean, she could also call it a dying faith, as that's one of the things critics of the priesthood would throw out. There's some thought that since mages are a pretty selfish lot typically, that there will be fewer and fewer priests as time goes on until there are none left.
Or she could make comment on his scars. It's not a common thing, so the number of priests that have done that will not break three digits. (this is out of ALL the human nations) Some would even consider it a mark of fanaticism.
That help any?))
((Oooh. *squeals* An on-the-fly character I get to play with. I like the idea of Autumn acutally knowing him personally. Now what to have her reference that Seist would pick up on... *thinks*))

page 2241
Jenannen
“Shows what you know,” Autumn muttered under her breath deliberately loud enough for Seist to hear. In a conversational tone she continued on; “I know that there are those who consider yours to be a dying faith. I know that that there are fewer than an hundred who have marked their eyes as yours, including a retired priestess whose eyes are marked in such a manner. And I understand why you need your pendant back, but that is not possible at this time, humanly or otherwise.” She sighed.

“Furthermore, aside from being slung over this saddle I don’t find this particularly inconvenient.”

Seist was quiet a moment. It was startling to hear a fae talk with any sort of knowledge about Dues and Frain, as magic was innate to fae on a level that Dues did not govern, and restraint was certainly not anything fae practiced, as Autumn was demonstrating quite aptly it seemed. But if she knew someone that was a follower... with the scarred eyes no less... that was a very unusual thing. He eyed his captive curiously, wondering if there was any way to coerce her to tell him where this retired priestess resided. Seeing as he couldn't even get his wretched pendant back, it seemed unlikely.

"It'll be plenty inconvenient once we get back to the city," he replied primly, "I am both Margrave and a mage. I can ensure there's a nice little cell waiting for you with wards that would take one of your royalty to break. Tell me what you did with my pendant that it cannot be returned right now."

page 2242
Jenannen
“Yes, let’s toss the dryad in a cell and kill her; that will surely get me my pendant back quickly,” Autumn murmured. “I’m a Margrave and I don’t need to ask politely,” Autumn’s murmuring grew louder as her anger rose.

Though it was more difficult from her position on horseback than it would have been with her feet planted firmly on the ground Autumn’s anger aided her in her efforts. She focused sunlight so as to temporarily blind Seist buying her the moments needed to raise up a briar field about them.

page 2242
Kiddo Seanchain

Seist didn't flinch at the sunlight, just turned his head slightly and shut his eyes tight, accepting the blinding. He felt the fae working her magic but it did not frighten him. He was a priest of Dues and Frain, after all, and one of the side-effects of working their divine magic was sometimes temporary blindness. He'd learned to not be afraid of it and did not need to be able to see to use his own magic. He pulled his horse to a stop and heard it wicker in fear in response to the shifting earth around it.

"I regret getting involved in that affair between you and your would-be kidnappers," he said mildly, dropping the reins and slipping a knife free. It was not his belt knife either, but one of the slender blades he used for assassinations. "You try my patience, fae. Cease your magic."

His hand tightened on the back of her her shirt and he brought his other hand up, brushing close to her face with his fingers so he could tell where the skin was despite not being able to see. Then he twisted his wrist so that the knife blade was positioned close to her neck.

page 2242
Jenannen
Autumn’s skin turned to bark in response to the blade’s touch. “There are worse things than death,” she said with a quiet calm that surprised her. She was even more surprised to find that she meant it. The thought of a cell terrified her, but somehow Seist’s blade at her throat did not.

The briars grown sufficiently Autumn had no reason, presently, not to cease as she was asked. “Life is not about what can be taken Margrave,” she said reverently.

page 2242
Kiddo Seanchain
"Let's call make a bargain then," Seist said coolly, "You don't try to run off, I don't try to imprison you. And then we can talk about what you've done to my pendant."

His hand was unwavering and his own magic boiled just below the surface, kept in check by a carefully cultivated self-restraint.

page 2242
Jenannen
With Seist’s conditional acquiescence Autumn’s anger dissolved and she was suddenly quite embarrassed at her behavior; she flushed deeply and hoped desperately that if her hair didn’t mask her blush from Seist that he would attribute it to the way she was slung over the horse. “I’m sorry,” she offered sincerely, “it wasn’t my intention to run but I was frightened.” And still am, she added to herself. “It was four hours after sunup before I left. I did wait,” though if he had he come Seist would have found only a tree (she wasn’t ready to explain that bit just yet). “But what happened just now was… well you… I…” Autumn sighed and shook her head unsure of how to explain that, especially when she still wasn’t sure of what it meant herself.

Seist flinched every so slightly as she pointed out how long he had taken to arise in the morning. She had no way to know the other bandit was dead - she'd been anxious to leave and in no mood to wait around on him. Still. She'd certainly given him a good deal of trouble over this. He did not loose his grip.

"Fair enough," he said softly, gentler this time, "Swear to me you will not try and run again. Then we can talk. Swear three times, if you would."

He knew enough about fae to ask for that.

page 2246
Jenannen
“Thrice you would have me swear not to run?” Autumn’s question was directed at Seist, but she spoke more to herself than she did to him. She was not comfortable with such a blanket commitment. Seist’s blade at her throat had made her realize that it was not death, but captivity which she most feared. In her centuries among humans she had never been bound to a person nor a place. Now it seemed she may be bound to both for a time.

She could easily word her oath carefully, as she had done many times before with humans, but she found she wanted something different with this human. She shuddered in fear at the thought and struggled to suppress her renascent urge to flee. All he wanted was a commitment that she wouldn’t run until his pendant was returned right? She could give him that, couldn’t she?

Autumn raised her eyes to Seist’s and with a profound sadness she asked, “Have you any idea what you ask of me?”

page 2246
Kiddo Seanchain
The way she asked made Seist think that no, he didn't realize what he asked of her. He wasn't one to back down though, especially in something as relatively trivial as this. He'd ask nothing more of her than what he needed to get his amulet back, and then he could let her go her way.

"Somewhat," he admitted, "I just want my amulet back though. That is all. Swear to me you won't run and I will swear to you upon the gods I serve - upon Dues and Frain - that I will do no harm to you so long as you do none to me."

It'd have to suffice. Frain would hold him to that oath and he felt his chest tighten in response, like he was holding his breath, and knew that the gods had heard him. There was a bit of wiggle room, at least. He did not have to take his dagger away, for start, not until she returned his oath with one of her own.

page 2247
Jenannen
Autumn still chose her words carefully, but not with any intention to deceive. “Very well then, until your pendant is returned you I give my word that I will not flee from you. Swearing it thrice will not bind me to my word any more strongly than once.”

Autumn didn’t understand it, and maybe it had to do with fae having a greater tie to fate, but once her word was given she was bound. That was why fae were loath do so; at least to her understanding. She had spent far more time with humans than she had with fae, but she had yet to meet a fae for whom it did not hold. That didn’t mean that there weren’t those out there for whom it did not.

page 2247
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist was quiet a moment, thinking it over. It was said that fae could not lie - but could still deceive quite well for that restriction - and that a fae's word was absolute. Even more so if it was sworn three times, that they would be compelled by some power beyond them to see the task through to completion. He didn't see a reason to force Autumn to swear it any further, as if she planned treachery he could just chase her down again. A bit wary, he drew the dagger back and slid it back into the sheath, loosing his grip on her as well and letting her slide off the horse and onto the ground. He kept his power in tight check, ready to draw it up in a heartbeat if need be.

"I didn't come as early as you would have liked," he said gently, "because I was exhausted from the night before. I was... out most of the night, ensuring that the second bandit wouldn't track either you nor anyone else down."

page 2247
Jenannen
Autumn reached for Seist’s assistance in sliding off the horse. As she took his hand she felt a chill not unlike that of the lifeless cold blade which he had held only a moment before to her throat. She flicked her gaze to his face and caught a glimpse of a memory long forgotten; stirred and chased off by her attempt to grasp it. She gasped. Had it not been for Seist’s hand she would have fallen roughly to the ground.

Autumn blushed,”Even had you come you would not have found me. I was where your pendant is now.” Autumn wasn’t sure how to respond to the rest of Seist’s… confession?

"Well then," he said mildly, seemingly unruffled by the moment of contact between them, "I'm intrigued. So tell me - where were you and where is my pendant now?"

He crossed his arms and leaned back into the saddle, smiling at her. It was a pleasant enough expression, untouched by the hostility that had been there just a moment earlier. She'd piqued his curiosity now.

page 2247
Jenannen
“I’m actually not entirely sure myself,” Autumn admitted. “I mean it’s in my tree, but I’m not sure where that is right now. That was actually one of the things that I had wanted to ask you about last night. You said you weren't sure what the Baroness would want with a fae, but I wanted to ask you; is she a collector?"

page 2247
Kiddo Seanchain
Seist replied carefully. He did not want to involve anyone in this further and from what he had learned - that and the rumors - this was not something he should be dragging someone into. He'd have enough trouble just protecting himself, he suspected.

"It is my understanding that the Baroness is very keen on knowing all that happens within the Borderlands, be it part of her territory or not. I would imagine that her information regarding this recent war among the fae is rather lacking, and without the dragon contacts necessary to learn of what's happened in the southern areas, she is trying to find out directly from a fae source. It's not a position you'd want to be in, if my guess is right. I'm afraid I can't give you anything more substantial than that."

He quickly changed the subject, to distract her from that line of thought. Hopefully.

"It's... in your tree," he said flatly, "Alright. You're going to have to explain this one to me."

page 2248
Jenannen
Autumn shook her head in agreement as Seist said that it was not a position she’d want to be in.

“I’m a dryad,” Autumn explained, “and dryads live in trees,” she offered Seist a bright-eyed smile before ducking her head slightly. “Dryads are bound to their trees. We stray too far and it kills us,” Autumn stated. “And here’s where my question came in; I am not bound to my tree, but rather my tree to me, in as much as I can tell. So you see,” Autumn paused briefly, “if the Baroness is a collector, well I’d be a novelty item.” She glanced back up at Seist, “This information the Baroness is after, it would help you?”

page 2248
Kiddo Seanchain
"I've heard of dryads," he said, "I've not heard of one that takes her tree with her, however. That is... very unusual indeed."

He frowned suddenly, snapping his head up and looking back in the direction of the city, the full implications of what she had described sinking in. Then he shifted in his saddle, staring down intently at her, as if he was finally seeing her for the first time, his brown eyes narrowed in concern and worried thought.

"How many people know of this?" he asked urgently, "The Baroness could very well be one of many problems, should this knowledge of what you are spread..."

page 2248
Jenannen
“Many humans haven’t even heard of dryads, so that’s good I guess,” Autumn smiled up at Seist. “ I don’t blame them though, in general we’re rather reluctant to reveal ourselves to humans, and even other fae can have trouble finding us.”

Autumn shifted uncomfortably under Seist’s scrutiny.

“Most humans see me as nothing more than fae,” she answered with a shrug. “Ardja knows I am a dryad, but she doesn’t know about my tree. Xhavelle knows what I just told you.” Autumn looked thoughtful for a moment, “I don’t think that anyone else that knows about my tree is alive anymore,” her expression conveyed a sorrow that her words did not. “Though there may be others at the various jobs I have taken that have deduced I am dryad. Grounds keeping is what I usually find employ in; much less human interaction than a floral shop.”

Seist sighed heavily and tapped absently on the side of the saddle with the excess reins. She hadn't been completely discreet, but he had to admit that his idea of secrecy bordered on paranoia. Most people were uneducated about the fae as well, and might not even recognize the rarity of what Autumn claimed she was. He'd certainly heard no rumors and he made it his business to keep tabs on what the less... devout... of his kind were up to. Besides, she may only be free with this information with him because he was a priest and she knew some of what Dues and Frain demanded of their followers.

"I suppose that's safe enough," he finally said, "I'll not betray your secret to a soul. But on to other matters - what did you do with my pendant?"

page 2248
Jenannen
“Thank you,” Autumn replied with a sigh of relief. “I told you, your pendant is in my tree, and I ask again if information about the fae war will help you. I mean no disrespect, but I’d prefer not to stand around here,” and as Autumn said that she earthed the briars she had raised. “I’d prefer to be on my way to the forest, but if that is,” her toned gained an undercurrent of bitterness, “against your will,” and then returned to normal, “I’d prefer to be on your way.”

page 2248
Kiddo Seanchain
Trust the fae to be cryptic. In her tree. And her tree was... with her? So how was she supposed to get to it?

"I'd prefer you to be on your way to the forest," he said, "But not with my pendant. I'd appreciate if you... called your tree or whatever it is you have to do to get it back to me. And - "

He hesitated, wondering if he should really say what he planned. His only hesitation was because she was fae. Were she human, he wouldn't have waited this long. And the only reason he was even realizing that perhaps he should do this was because she acted human at moments, as if the years spent among his kind had worn away some of the rough arrogance that was so typical of her kind. Well. Among most. There were some that genuinely liked humanity above their own people, but he had read that dryads typically were not among their numbers.

"I'm sorry I misjudged you," he said, no hint of dishonesty in his voice, "I thought you spirited the pendant away out of malice. It doesn't sound like that is the case. I would appreciate news of the fae war as well, since you've graciously offered. All I have heard is rumors."

page 2248
Jenannen
“You ask how many others know, then you ask me to retrieve your pendant here in the open and in broad daylight no less.” Autumn giggled and smiled up at him.

“I did as you asked and did my best to keep it safe and out of sight,” Autumn replied solemnly. “I am aware of what such medallions mean to their priests.” Then she smiled at Seist mischievously, “had it been your signet ring you had given me, Margrave, I may have done just such a thing.”

“I have no information presently, which is why I would like to be on my way. Like it or not I am now involved.”

page 2248
Kiddo Seanchain
"We're well out of eyeshot of the city!" Seist exclaimed, flinging his hand in its general direction to demonstrate, "but very well, I suppose we can put a bit more distance if you insist. Gods know I've wasted enough time already, what's a few more hours?"

He shook his head in mock dismay and eyed both her and then his ring warily, running his thumb over the grooves.

"I would never dare give out my signet ring," he said solemnly, "Can you imagine the damage that could be done with it? I'd come home and find that a letter instructing my steward to move the stables into my personal quarters had arrived and they'd carried my instructions out while I was away. Here, if you're willing, I can let you ride double for a time. Put some more distance between us and the city before you turn into a tree."

Seist pulled himself further up in the saddle, giving her room to swing up behind him if she so chose.

page 2248
Jenannen
“Thank you, in this instance I prefer to err on the side of caution. I am aware the danger of being discovered. What do you mean you’ve wasted enough time? I am keeping you from something?”

Seist’s comment about his signet ring served to send Autumn into a fit of laughter. In a breath between laughs she replied, “There you see what I mean?” and in another breath, “That could be fun.”

As Autumn’s laughter subsided her cheeks colored, “I’m afraid I don’t know how to ride, but I would be willing.” She stared at the horse in consternation.
