Kareswen stepped back. "At sixteen, I was on one of my first hunting trips with a couple of friends. We were two or three days away when we saw the fires. We rushed back but by the time we arrived the city was dead and the enemy had gone." She laughed bitterly. "We were armed with hunting bows and skinning knives. I'd never held a sword or faced an enemy in my life and everything we knew had just been destroyed. We swore an oath not to stop until we'd slain every last one of them or died in the attempt. The others are dead." She indicated the sword at her side. "I changed quickly."

"You.. Left for a fishing trip.. While the city was under siege, and Osgiliath struggled not to fall?" Ranu tried to compute this sheer ignorance but failed, "I suppose that's reasonable. After all, fishing's an important skill."

((It didn't happen like that I don't think. I think they still won the siege and everything, just the ring didn't get destroyed, though we thought it had and the invasion took us by surprise I think. Can't remember that far back. But I think something happened because all of the elves left...))
Kareswen's temper flared at the veiled insult and her hand moved unconsciously to her sword hilt as she struggled to control it. "Thanks for the exchange of pleasantries." She said finally with mock formality. "It was nice making your acquaintance but right now I have better places to be. I shouldn't have come at all." She turned on her heel and walked away, her long stride making easy progress on the well-known streets as she headed back to where she had left her horse in the gate, untying him swiftly.

"Yes," he called after her, "I should be dealing with this, not talking to children." He picked up his bag, throwing it over his shoulder and walking towards the gate. He had enough food for weeks, the way he would ration it. It was just a question of how he'd get into Mordor.

She ignored him as she mounted with ease, wondering if he thought that that petty insult would upset her. She clicked her tongue, turning her horse and heading towards the main gateway, the gate long since destroyed.

"I came here from an encounter with the orc army. Before that Osgiliath, before that Ithilien and before that Mordor." She urged the horse into a canter. "Where have you been lately, old man?"

"What's Mordor to you?" Kareswen said sharply. "A child's opinion means nothing and an old man has no place in our games." She slowed to a trot, unable to resist turning around and adding a parting shot, "Besides, my mother told me never to talk to strangers."

Kareswen was astonished by the words, slowing the horse to a complete stand-still as she stared after him. "You want me to help you?"

"Everywhere." Kareswen responded automatically. "They're swarming all over the place. If you want to go in you better be handy with a weapon. You won't get in without fighting a few. But as they fight amongst themselves all the time it shouldn't be hard to make it look accidental. Unless you're seen of course."
