"Good evening. My name is Maria. I'm the cook and housekeeper here. Are you hungry? I've got a vegetable soup on if you're interested."
Maria's soup is usually very good. She uses a recipe from our homeland.

"Of course there's no meat in the stew. Eric's a vegetarian, so to speak. Anton and I have adopted the same diet since we've been working for him."

She looks around, and assuming she finds a chair, sinks into it, relieved. "Oh thank goodness. thank you. I'm really beginning to get sick from going to bed hungry so often. Killing my attempts to build up my strength too." she pillowed her arms on the table and laid her head on them. "The hag thinks my being a vegetarian means I'm being picky to spite her, so she spites me right back. Usually I can get an apple for dinner, or a banana."

Maria shook her head, "Tsk tsk...Poor dear. You won't have to worry about that here. I'm sure Eric will see that you have something to eat, and if he doesn't, I surely will. A growing girl needs her food." She sat the bowl down in front of her and picked up a glass, "Now, what would you like to drink?"

"Well...we don't normally keep that sort of thing in the house, but how about a nice herbal tea? I can make you one that will help with the sleeping bit."

"Why yes dear. I can make you a tea for several ailments. We use herbs for so many things here. They're so much better for you than this modern medicine where there's a pill for everything." Maria put a kettle on for hot water and got several small packets down from a cabinet and and put small dashes of herbs into a mortar and pestle and ground them up, filling the air with the aroma. "Now, I didn't get your name. What shall I call you?"

She watched her, fascinated, despite herself. "skunk. Everyone just calls me skunk."

"Alright. Skunk it is." The tea kettle whistled, and Maria gracefully took the kettle off and poured the water into a mug, dunking the herbs into the bottom of the mug and swirling it all together. "Now just let that sit for a bit and it'll be all ready to go."

"th... thanks," she said, sitting up a bit awkwardly. It was a long time since some one treated her nicely that she didn't suspect of having some ulterior motive. She ate her soup as she waited for the tea to steep, trying to figure out her confused emotions.

"And I think I have some cookies here if you're still hungry. I haven't had anyone to dote on in a while, so please forgive me if I'm a little mothery." She pulled out a tray of chocolate chips cookies and picked one up to munch on.

Her lips gave a small smile, but her eyes got sad and distant as she stared into her soup. Motherly? No one stayed motherly. Her own mother completely changed, completely ignored her after that day... There would always come that point when people no longer wanted to take care of her. She couldn't let herself be hurt that way again. She didn't think she'd survive it. A tear rolled down her cheek as she closed her eyes, trying to push away the memories. Trying to push away the pain. All she had to do was not get close to anyone, she knew. Why was that suddenly so hard?

Eric's furry head nudged against her leg gently.
"Oh dear..." Maria reached for a tissue box. "Did I say something wrong? It's ok to tell me, you won't hurt my feelings. I'm a tough old bird." Maria's warm smile lit up her eyes as she poured herself a cup of tea and sat down at the island.
