I managed to find that Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei 300 clip on Youtube, but for some insane reason they had disabled the audio since it as used without approval...
I'm pretty sure that the parody clause of fair usage would cover this, as it is obviously a parody... so, wtf?

I keep forgetting to mention it, but recently I got caught up in a show I think a few of the AG guys might enjoy. Fighting Spirit (a.k.a. Hajime no Ippo), a great show about boxing. It follows Ippo, a high school kid, from his problems with being bullied and low self-esteem, into the world of boxing. This show is seriously full of manly badassery and moments of pure gar.

I'm pretty sure that the parody clause of fair usage would cover this, as it is obviously a parody... so, wtf? I think the legal grounds for fair use in AMVs hasn't really been resolved. From what I know of Fair Use, it might be fine. The problem is, though, that AMV.org, AMV creators, and Youtube are understandably reluctant to start legal trouble with the music companies. I know that when one, who I don't remember who it was, found out about AMVs (because someone moronically sent a letter to Evanescence asking if an AMV was an official video), the record company asked to have AMVs with their artist's songs, (Creed, Seether, and Evanescence). AMV.org did it, because while the request didn't have any legal force (it was just a polite request, not a Cease and Desist Order), it was possible future action might happen, which would draw more publicity, and they don't have enough money to defend against whatever suits might be brought by other companies that then hear about it. All in all, I agree that Fair Use could arguably protect the AMVs. The problem is, that argument's a lot stronger for protecting them from anime companies who would sue, since the anime is actually "transformed" and changed substantially to be set to the music. The music itself, though, isn't terribly transformed in a lot of cases, which might lead to problems with the actual text of the exception. It's kind of a pity, as the anime companies are at least somewhat aware of AMVs and have chosen not to care. Thus, having a stronger argument against them doesn't really give much benefit as it would against the more sue-happy music companies.

Yeah, I heard that there's a new season coming out now, but I haven't seen the older seasons, so if it's a continuation, I think I might be left behind by the current episodes.
