I ... *Bard stares up at Maggie, suddenly very aware of her warmth. His own face begins to redden*
I... I... ...Maggie?

Bard, I . . . *Maggie just looks at him, wordlessly, for a moment, breathless again, but this time from the impact of her own emotions. She struggles to find her voice, but her eyes speak more clearly of what she's feeling than she ever could*
*She closes them abruptly, trying to force herself out of the daze she's in* I'm sorry, I . . . *Her face burning even more, she tries to lift herself off of him, to at least get to her knees since she hasn't the first clue how to get back to her feet in the skates*

*Bard shifts a little, wincing as he does*
Maggie... I do believe I'm bleeding....
*he props himself up on his elbows enough to see the long bloody tear Maggie's skate has made in his new jeans*

Oh good Lord in Heaven . .. *She follows his gaze, her color quickly going from red to white as she sees the gash on his leg. An expression of guilt flickers across her face as she realizes what it was that cut him, but it's quickly replaced by a more serious look as she scoots down along the ice to inspect it more carefully.*

*Bard begins to laugh in self-defeat. He lays back on the ice and heaves a sigh. A crowd of concerned and curious skaters has formed around them.*
"Hey, you okay, buddy? I called 911. Hang in there!"
*Bard mutters, half to himself* Why, Maggie, would you like to see an Emergency Room? It'll be ever so much fun....

Northwestern Memorial Hospital - Emergency Room - 45 minutes later
*The ER of Northwestern Memorial Hospital is clean and professional as one would expect. Here and there, little Christmas decorations have been hung to liven up the austerity. Doctors and nurses move quickly from patient to patient.
Bard sits on an examination table while the resident physician stitches up his leg. He's a bright serious looking young Indian man, a few years younger than Bard. The name tag on his labcoat reads 'Dr. K. Shivanamian'*
"You're rather fortunate Mr. Awenson. This could have been much deeper." *he stands up* "Only fifteen stitches. Now that wasn't all that bad, now was it?"
No, Doctor. *Bard smiles rather fakely*

*By this point, Maggie is significantly less overwhelmed by this new environment. In fact, while she's still quite worried about Bard, part of her can't help but be interested and a little amazed by how efficiently the staff here handle things*
*She watches the doctor closely as he finishes up and talks to Bard, and then ventures to address him herself, clearly both impressed and sincerely grateful* Thank ye very much, Doctor.

*Doctor Shivanamian beams at Maggie* "Well, we do what we can, don't we, Miss?"
*he removes his gloves, disposes of them and washes his hands. He turns to Bard* "You should make a clinic visit in two weeks to have that checked. Until then, keep off your leg as much as possible, and use the cane we gave you."
*He turns back to Maggie, placing his hand on her shoulder* "Make sure your father does as he's told, okay?" *he gives her a wink, then wanders off to his next appointment*

*Maggie blinks in confusion and starts to correct him* Oh, he's not my . .. *But the doctor is already gone, and she says, half to herself* Well, good heavens.
*She shakes her head a little, but then quickly turns back towards Bard, obviously still concerned about him*

*Bard watches the Doctor wander off with a mixed look of bemusement and horror. With a sigh, he reaches for the cane and eases himself off the bed. He winces, but manages to walk over to Maggie with relative ease.*
Well, my lovely daughter, shall we be off?

*Maggie gives him an odd look, but then lets out a sound that's half-sigh, half-laugh, and nods* Aye, I daresay ye're more than ready te leave this place. *she glances at the cane, a bit worried yet, and still feeling more than a little guilty about inadvertantly cutting him with her skate* Are ye . . . in much pain from it?

*Bard slowly limps down the hallway with Maggie at his side*
Just my pride.
*He stops, all at once at the threshold between two corridors and stares at the floor*
I'm so sorry, Maggie... I wanted to show you all the wonderful things here in my time. I'd hoped you'd really love it here. But what have I shown you. Noise, and lights, and pollution. Bitter exes. Crass commercialism. Now a hospital. It's a wonder I haven't gotten us shot!
I'm sorry. You deserved so much better than I've shown you. You must be so disappointed....

*Maggie shakes her head, reaching out to rest her hand on his arm* Oh, nay, Bard, I'm not disappointed. 'Tis true that some things . . . *she takes a moment to choose her wording carefully* . . . didna go so well as ye'd hoped. Still, ye've shown me so many new and amazing things here, things I could ne'er even have imagined. I'm glad I could see them with ye.
*she smiles, if a little sadly, her tone sincere and almost a bit wistful* No place is perfect, but . . . your time, your world . . . it really is wonderful.
