Ambrose thought carefully about what Lin had said, and then smiled again. "You know, I think that might be it!" He said, then looked at the water. "Once more..." He murmured, then cracked his knuckles a bit. Twirling his finger a bit, the water came up again, spun in its mini vortex. However, this time he spread his hands apart, expanding the water particles. He stretched them until he sensed they were about to break again, then focused on letting the water freeze. Slowly, with one hand he grabbed his pencil again. This time, when he threw it at the shield, it bounced off, but he didn't celebrate, for after a few seconds, a crack appeared where the pencil had hit, and it shattered and fell to the floor before melting again. "Almost...Almost..." He murmured, concentrating now.

Lin actually clapped and bounced gracefully and softly up and down in extreme excitement.
"Oh that was wonderful, Ambrose! Simply wonderful! You learn so fast! Almost the way my people do. Are you sure you don't have some Elven blood in you?"
She giggled softly at what she said, completely joking... which was quite odd for her to do at this school.

He looked down at her bouncing, giggling self and had an extreme case of posessiveness. God, he'd never heard that giggle. Had anyone else ever heard it? He hoped not. He wanted that all to himself. If only he could bottle it...or her...and keep it in his pocket forever...Damn it, what the hell was wrong with him?! She was an elf, a delicate, hatred oblivious little elf. He...he was a giant, a callous handed bodyguard who'd shatter her like glass if he wasn't careful...Damn it...
He forced himself to smile and laugh at her joke, shaking his head. "No, I'm quite sure. We're a family of white magic sorcerers and sorceresses. I do believe my great Uncle married an elf, though they were never blessed with any children." He said, scratching his chin.

Lin laughed a little louder and nodded. "Well, that is too bad that they did not have any children, but your intelligence and speed at learning is just like an Elf's. It is quiet remarkable!"
Lin then happened to glance at the clock by the library entrance and gasped. "Oh no! My class is going to start in 3 minutes! I have to go!"
She jumped back to the table gracefully and started gathering up the papers and pencil she had borrowed from the library. She knew she could take them with her to her class. While she was doing this, her lilting voice hurriedly spoke to Ambrose. "I am sorry, but have to go to class, and quickly. I will be free in 3 hours from now and will be in the gardens if you wish to work more on the shield. I will be able to help for 2 hours, if you wish, and then I have independent study with Professor Akakios. I would love to work with you again on this, but if you are busy, I understand."
She stood and smiled quickly at Ambrose. "You really did an incredible job in such a short amount of time. Thank you for letting me look at your textbook with you. Farewell."
She then raced out of the library and toward her class, her dress billowing behind her. She almost looked like a fleeing spirit through the library and the halls. It was eerie but also beautiful.

"I'll be...there..." He said, then realized she wasn't even paying attention. "God damn it..." He shook his head, then sighed when he realized he had a class as well. Thank God it was meditation. He needed all the spiritual cleansing and calming he could get...

3 hours later, Lin found herself practically skipping toward the gardens. She LOVED new classes and was always so invigorated after getting new textbooks!
Once she was in the gardens, she set her books on one of the benches and smiled at all flowers and bushes around her. "Good day, everyone! I know you cannot respond vocally, but I just want to spread my excitement! New classes and textbooks are wonderful!"
A few moments later, the flowers and bushes swayed slightly, almost as if blown by a gentle breeze, in response to Lin's greeting and excitement.

"Looks like they're happy to see you." Ambrose remarked stepping up behind her. He'd never admit that he'd been let out of class early and had been brooding on a garden bench for the past half hour, wondering why sixty seconds had to take so damned long to pass.

Lin gasped softly and turned around to see Ambrose standing behind her. She smiled brightly in greeting and nodded.
"Good evening, Ambrose. Yes, nature usually is very happy to see an Elf, fairy, nymph or other creature who interacts directly with nature. I have been in this garden so often since I've been here, however, so I have a special bond with these flowers and bushes in particular."
She then blushed slightly and looked to the side in slight embarrassment. "I am sorry to carry on so. At home, it is very natural to talk about these things with other individuals. I always forget that people here in the West are not as familiar with communicating with nature the way my kind does. I realize it might look and sound odd."

"No, no, it's quite all right." He assured, sorry that she'd stopped talking. "In fact, I find it quite fascinating. To think some people can communicate with these things that have no apparent language or intellectual system...It's just...amazing." He said, smiling at her.

Lin turned her face back to Ambrose and she smiled brightly again. "I am so glad you put it that way! So many people do not realize that each piece of nature has its own intellectual infrastructure but also a larger collective awareness with every piece of nature around it! You can communicate individually with a specific part, such as a flower or bush, or communicate with the entire section of nature where you are. It is quite fascinating."
Her eyes then lit up even more and she raced over to her textbooks on one of the stone benches. "Oh! I received 5 more textbooks today in my last 3 classes. Isn't it wonderful?! I am so excited to read them."
She was holding her books again and then she turned back around to look at Ambrose. "Did you get any new textbooks this afternoon?"

"Uh...yes, one. A book on how to find inner piece. Meditation class. Lia wanted to do it, so I guess I did too." He said, shrugging.

Lin gasped and went over to Ambrose quickly, looking up at him with shock and excitement. "Meditation?! Really? Elves are experts at meditation! We mostly meditate instead of sleep! Are you certain there is no Elven blood in you whatsoever?"

"Um...wait a second. Don't laugh at what you see in a second, ok?" He asked, and muttered an old spell he'd been taught long ago. Suddenly in front of him appeared a huge tapestry. At the top it read 'Rinaldi Family Tree'. "See, it goes back for generations, years and years of Rinaldis. And all teh way down here at the bottom is us. I haven't pulled this thing out in God knows how long. They even keep updated pictures of everyone on this thing above their names. See, here are my parents, then me, and then Ophelia, and then Iz-What?" He trailed off, confused as he pointed to where his baby sister's picture had been. Instead, there was a huge black spot where her face and name had been burnt off. Written in a bright red color over the black was the single word 'DISOWNED' in capital letters.
Shocked for a moment, Ambrose reached forward and felt the spot where it had once read Isadora Danni Rinaldi. "They...They took her off the tree...They took little Izzy off the tree...Oh, baby..." He stared at it for a moment, then shook his head to clear it and looked apologetically at Lin. Lifting his finger, he had the tapestry roll up just enough so that it seemed to end at his parents. "Sorry about that, it just caught me by surprise. Anyway, the white circle under almsot all of our names means white magic. Only...only a few people hve black circles, and green circles mean elf. Let's see...start at the top..." He murmured, and tried to immerse himself in his search. All the while he was thinking, 'they took her off the tree. No one, not even any ofthe few other dark magic users in the family have ever been taken off the tree...I can't let her see this...Or Lia. She'll gloat...Oh, Jesus...' He thought, shaking his head as he went over the tree.

Lin nodded and didn't say anything at Ambrose's outburst. Even if his sister chose to use black magic, it was obvious Ambrose still cared for his little sister deeply. So she would not speak her own opinions at all on the matter. She merely kept her mouth shut as her eyes danced across the old parchment in wonder.
She always found family history and genealogy quite fascinating, and the spell Ambrose had used to make his physical family tree appear before them was incredible!

Ambrose continued his search, and almost dismissed another row when something caught his eye. "Ah!" He said, and pointed to something on the tree. "Here...right here...I forgot he married into the family. Charlemagne Bliss. Uncle Charley...See, half his circle's white, half is green. He was half elf. A genius, I swear. He could whip up an earth shield before you could blink..." He smiled with the memory, then looked at Lin. "Guess you were right after all." He said, and smiled.
