Well, there was plenty of lovage here, so Johan picked another fistful, and ran forward to crush the leaves against Steve. If anything, it seemed it was even more effective against the plant the second time around.

Whatever he was doing was making Steve angry, for the vine whipped about, and finally knocked Johan off his feet. As the vine attempted to wrap itself around him, Johan crushed the remains of the Lovage against it, prompting more thrashing. The Sorcerer managed to regain his feet, though he was now damp and sore. Dear Jack, he hoped this would end soon!

With the Lovage gone, Johan searched for another herb to use against Steve. He spied the familiar leaves of Oregano, and remembering their earlier effectiveness, picked some. This time, he tried pelting the vine with the herb, trying to avoid getting knocked over again.

While pelting the vine was effective, Johan thought Steve was getting a bit too close for comfort. He quickly crushed some of the leaves, releasing the herb's spicy scent. But, for some reason, it didn't bother Steve this time, and Johan had to spend several minutes avoiding the vine's grasp.

Johan had to retreat farther and farther from the irate plant. Fortunately, he ended up in a familiar part of the jungle-like greenhouse, and recognized the Lovage that had been so effective before. Ducking beneath a swing from Steve, he grabbed a handful of the herb, and ground it as hard as he could into the vine. It writhed satisfyingly, and shot away from Johan with startling speed. Johan watched it go, then bent over and gasped for breath.

Cadmus ducked out of the cupboard with a large vial in his hand. there were lots of newts tails in it. Kept in the vial because they were most potent when dried. He set the vial down on a small work table and turned as Sheridan returned once more. Cadmus nodded.
"That looks to be plenty enough for this potion at least"
Blood rat was the only thing missing from his ingredients. He sighed no one could retrieve the Blood Rat for him though. He tapped his chin in thought. A slight shimmer in the air to his right was the only warning that something was about to appear. within seconds the shimmering solidified into his Scythe with the vines crawling up the staff. He turned to look at his scythe, he stroked at the vines climbing up the scythe and they started to move. It slipped off as if stretching. As if extracting itself from the scythe a small emerald glowing plant settled on the ground it had little legs that supported in baseball sized body, with vine like arms.
"My Friend I need you to fetch me some Blood Rat."
The Little plant bobbed before he turned back to the students.
I'm going to need you all to gather more of these same herbs so that I can make another potion for Steve as well.
At that he picked up all the herbs that the student shad brought him and he began to crush and mix them.

Sheridan started at the professor. How had they not brought enough ingredients? Really, just what was Professor Cadmus intending to make with all of those? No, nevermind, he was starting to think he did not want to know. For that matter he really didn't want to know just what the professor did or kept in the greenhouse in general.
Ignoring the tiny walking plant (did the professor have -any- non-monster plants?), Sheridan gave a heavy breath and turned to hunt for more of the required herbs. Whatever the professor was making had better work, and fast!

Calder flipped through the book and looked about at the plants about him. It wasn't very hard to spot some of them and when it came to plants, he had a bit of an eye for them. Moving about as the professor and students seemed up to something, Calder plucked off a bit of Zebra Wort. It wasn't something that seemed to cause any real damage, but he did want to see what it did. Picking it up with the cuff as to not get any on his own skin, he moved over and found a thrashing root before pressing it in. It didn't take long at all for the color to change a vibrant stripe pattern. PRETTY!
Calder rubbed some more in and wonder, idly, if he could look like a zebra himself in the future - just for fun of course.

"L-Loreto?!" Hasuko called in surprise as she noticed the plague doctor grab a handful of leaves from the same Southernwood bush she had used. The doctor didn't seem to have any better luck with it than she did. Oddly, it made Hasuko feel a little better.
But that was beside the point. She quickly ran to her friend's side. "What is going on in this class?!" she squeaked, while smacking a questing vine from grabbing her leg. "Where is the teacher? He didn't get eaten, did he?" Hasuko eyed Steve as the giant plant grabbed another bunch of herbs a student tossed its way and stuffed it into its 'mouth'.
"Please tell me that your classes aren't all like this." she said weakly.
Hasuko knew Amityville's classes were going to be challenging but she didn't expect this. She still had to try though, she didn't want to get eaten by Steve. And she most definitely did not want to fail her first class.
"Um..." she quickly scanned around the greenhouse, trying to find something, anything else that could be of use.
There! She recognized that plant! It was Zebra Wort. Hasuko couldn't quite remember what it was used for, exactly, but she remembered some of the more mischievous kids at her school back home often using it in potions. Maybe it could distract Steve? "Loreto," she called. "I think this might work?"
Hasuko grabbed a handful of leaves from the plant and crushed them between her webbed hands to release the Zebra Wort's oils and hopefully make the herb more effective. She then tossed the bruised leaves at Steve.
The giant plant paused and then shuttered briefly, a couple of its vines turning aqua blue with chartreuse polka-dots. Steve seemed confused. Hasuko smiled, that seemed to have worked!

Malodore whirled at the sight of something green rushing it - then stopped as it realized this green, at least, wasn't Steve! "Ah! Yes... ah... I'm not sure where Professor Cadmus is," it said, truthfully.
As for the rest... oh, where to begin? And having a serious talk about how zany Amityville Academy could be while vines grabbed at their ankles probably wasn't a very good plan. "I've not been in a class like this before, no, but... I did say it was hands-on experience, yes?" it said with a sigh. "Every day is an adventure. Indeed."
That said, it reached out and stripped some leaves off the same plant Hasuko had used, crushing them as she had and heaving them at a different vine, turning that bit of Steve a lovely, confusing plaid.
"Good choice," it added, approving, as the vine stopped moving. It could practically see the ??? floating over Steve's leaves.

An adventure?! Hasuko looked incredulously at the plague doctor. This wasn't an adventure. This was a nightmare with a high probability of being eaten.
But... maybe this was nothing to Amityville students? Everyone else around her seemed to take the giant plant's attack in stride. Maybe this really was an adventure to them? Sure, they were all upset but even that seemed more like annoyance than any real fear. Everyone seemed to be attacking Steve with grim determination.
Hasuko watched as Malodore attacked Steve with the same herb she had used with even more spectacular results. Plaid! "Good job!" she called, forcing herself to congratulate her friend with more enthusiasm than she truly felt.
The kappa sighed, looking around for something else to use. She plucked some Calendula roses off a nearby bush and tossed them over to one of Steve's questing vines nearby. The vine snatched them up and stuffed them into Steve's maw.
Steve shuttered and Hasuko looked up in interest. She couldn't quite remember what the roses were good for but apparently it was having some sort of effect?
All of the sudden, Steve whipped several more of its vines over in Hasuko's direction, avidly searching for her. "Kyaa!" Hasuko yelped. She kicked at a vine and scrambled away, trying to get out of its reach. It was like the roses were attracting Steve, rather than discouraging the giant plant.

"Oh, you don't need to worry too much," Malodore advised, lifting its coat to hop primly over a writhing plaid vine. "Even if Steve eats you, you won't be damaged. I've seen people come out just fine."
... Possibly reassuring? It hoped?
Another, non-plaid vine lashed right at Malodore's head, nearly knocking its hat off of its head. The plague doctor clapped one hand on the brim of its hat and glared at the vine. "Don't touch that," it snapped, reaching out with its free hand. Its claws met a plant, and without hesitation it snapped a good chunk off and scratched at the vine with it.
The vine reacted immediately, twisting away and making heaving motions, kind of like one of Riley's tentacles preparing to expel vomit. The plague doctor belatedly looked at the mess of plant matter in its claws.
Oh. Black Cohosh. That explained it.

Hasuko was still trying to scramble away from Steve's overly affectionate vines. "I don't care! I don't want to get eaten!" she cried at her friend. A vine grabbed her and Hasuko struggled to disentangle herself.
She lost her balance and fell atop a bed of garlic. The crushed herb released a pungent smell that would have been great at any other time but right now all it seemed to do was make Steve's vines grip her even tighter.

"Bad Steve!" Malodore said severely, turning its attentions to the vine currently wrapped around Hasuko's ankles. Some tantalizing berries were fairly dripping from brambly vines overhead, and the plague doctor grabbed at them, throwing the berries down onto Steve's vine rapid-fire.
The blackberries burst over the vine in small pops of juice, staining Steve, Hasuko, and Malodore alike - but the protective properties made the vine loosen and rear back like a frightened snake before it twisted away.
"And stay away," Malodore grumbled at the retreating vine; it then crouched and held out one hand to Hasuko. "Are you all right?"

"I think so?" Hasuko said shakily. She got back to her feet with the plague doctor's help, breathing a silent thanks to all kami that her water dish hadn't spilled. That would have been an even bigger disaster. "Thanks, Loreto." She said.
Hasuko glared at a stray vine that was still wiggling nearby. She grabbed some leaves off an Angelica bush growing nearby and threw them at the vine, watching in grim satisfaction as the vine snatched them up and shoved them into Steve's mouth.
If ever a plant could make a wry face, Steve certainly would be doing so. Hasuko remembered all the faces she used to make when she had to drink Angelica leaf tea when she was sick. The herb was good for colds but it was so very bitter -- even when toned down with honey. Raw must taste horrid.
Serves him right, she thought.
