I've recently been introduced to the Dresden Files RPG, which I now officially long to play more off. I don't know who all is familiar with the Dresden Files, or who like table-top gaming, but I was thinking I might devote some time to running something via Gaia if people are interested in it. The game uses the Fate system, so its very story heavy; however, there is still that table-top aspect of die rolling though its Fudge dice. Thus, d6s would be the substitute, which we can get more into later. This system is pretty open, and a good fit as far as table-top transfers over to forum role-playing goes. If people are interested and I do this, I'd walk everyone through character creation, some of the rules, and we could even do the city creation. This game is very group orientated which is very cool. Let me know what you think.

I might be interested in participating in something like this. If you decide to do this, and we can get maybe a couple of new people to play also, then yes. I'd suggest maybe trying to dos some recruiting. The guild has been pretty damn quiet...

I'd be interested as well. I haven't heard of the storyline before but I'll take a look.

I'd like to start the character creation process. Unless you want to wait until we have more people on board and take us all through it together.

I suppose I could technically get you started, there is a critical part of the character creation where we'll need everyone who is going to start out with us.

The first part of character creation is deciding upon a template in which to base your character off of. They have some already made ones in the book, but ultimately it comes up to what you want to play. They are:
-Pure Mortal
-Champion of God
-Changeling
-Emissary of Power
-Focused Practitioner
-Knight of a Faerie Court
-Lycanthrope
-Minor Talent
-Red Court Infected
-Sorcerer
-True Believer
-Were-Form
-White Court Vampire
-White Court Virgin
-Wizard

I'm interested in Pure Mortal, Were-Form, maybe Knight of a Faerie Court, and maybe Emissary of Power. I'd like a little bit more info on the the latter three before I make a decision though.

Were-form is basically like Billie Borden is, in the series. It a human or non-human who has learned to take the form of an animal. The form isn't necessarily supercharged or anything of the sort other than the fact that its not just an animal, its you, with your intelligence, your motives, etc..

Knight of a Faerie Court is a different story altogether and one I may not allow since I want this to take place in the Dresdenverse. As far as is known there each of the Faerie Courts have one Knight. The courts are Summer and Winter. Within the Dresdenverse both positions are currently occupied, though if a case is made I would consider killing off the current Summer knight making room. But know A Knight of a Faerie Court is granted a portion of that Courts power...effectively making a supercharged mortal. This individual however, is bound, body and soul, by a deep compulsion to adhere to the word of the Mother, Queen, and Lady of their court. The reason these knights exist at all is because they have mortal free will, thus they can take actions for the court that plain cannot be done normally.

Lastly, Emissary of Power which I'll take straight out of the book. Emissaries are mortals who’ve been saddled with a burden of great power—and great responsibility—by one of the big dogs in the supernatural
community: vast powers from Faerie or the outer reaches of the Nevernever, one of the true dragons, or something stranger. Emissaries of Power are often the bearers of items of great potency, able to tap into the power of their
patron and bring it to bear on their—and their patron’s—behalf. Such champions are usually more victim than anything, though—powers
such as theirs come at the price of dark bargains, be it a lifetime of thankless servitude and sacrifice, their eternal soul, or other such “petty”
things.
Knights of the Faerie Courts and even Knights of the Cross are technically examples of this. Furthermore, as a representative of said power, you must adhere to the stricture and responsibilities that being places upon you. And at times the being your power comes from may exercise near-total control over your character.

Alright. I think I'm actually most interested in Pure Mortal and Emissary of Power. Emissary of Power would depend on what options are available as far as patrons.

As far as patrons go, give me a few you'd be interested in. It's a fairly open thing. Just keep in mind what your position would mean.
i.e. A god like Thor or Zeus...a dragon even, like Ferrovax from the series. Just think of a being who would have the kind of power to spare to have a emissary.

Alright, so I was talking with Stoic and he decided he wanted to start as a pure mortal with the possibility of becoming and emissary later on. Verse entering in stuck with that position. Emissary of powers aren't really able to just give up that position. More often then not within the series, the only time these powers transfer so that one is no longer that Power's Emissary is when they die. The only other time I've seen it happen is through being unable to carry on that Emissary's purpose.

The next step would be your High Concept. This is who your character is, what they’re all about. Certain templates can have requirements. That usually means a reference to your template within your high concept. For example, Harry Dresden’s High Concept is Wizard Private Eye. That’s because as a wizard you have to reference that template within your High Concept. In the books he works as a Private Investigator working on supernatural cases within the Chicago area.
He works with Lt. Murphy, she is a pure mortal who works as the head of Special Investigations, they’re the group assigned to dealing with all things strange within the city; the things that can’t be quantified normally within police reports-i.e. magic, demons, ghouls, Loup Garou, etc.. This job is a huge part of who she is and related strongly to what she believes in-the sanctity of the law. Therefore, her High Concept is Special Investigations Lead Detective.

Your High Concept is also an Aspect, which is a major part of this system that I’ll cover when we get closer to actually starting. You will have several of these by the time we’re done with character creation.

In short, your High Concept is a phrase that sums up what your character is about—what and who they are.

Well. I'm kind of thinking of maybe going with a student of mythology. I don't know if that's enough to go on for a High Concept...

Technically, Student of Mythology would be enough. If you can think of a way to spice it up, or if you think of something more applicable to your character later we can change that.

Next comes the Trouble Aspect.

With High Concept being what and who you are, your character's Trouble is the answer to a very simple question: What complicates your high concept?

Generally a Trouble fits into one of these:
Internal struggle/personal conflict and External struggle.

For example with Harry Dresden, his trouble is Temptation of Power. With Lt. Karren Murphy it is, Unbelieving Bureaucracy.

Both have no easy solution. Dresden's is both an ongoing internal and external struggle; with minor victories and defeats. Murphy's because it's not something she can fix by kicking a** and taking names.

They can also be between both like Micheal Carpenter's Family Man. When there is trouble involving that aspect, it's not going to have an easy solution and he isn't going to walk away from them.

It can also be a little bit more literal and brought down upon themselves like with Molly Carpenter's Doom of Damocles. She violated one of the Laws of Magic and was spared from the Headman's axe by Harry, so now it internally represents the temptation of quick power, and the external fact that she is being watched by the White Council with unforgiving scrutiny.

In short, your experience with your trouble makes you a stronger person in that regard. Dealing with personal struggles leaves you vulnerable to being tempted or cajoled, but it can also give you a sense of inner strength, because you know the sort of person you want to be. External problems often cause trouble, but people do learn hard lessons from the troubles they deal with. They especially learn how to maneuver around many of the smaller issues their troubles present.

Hope this gives you a good idea of how to come up with your characters struggle. If you have any questions, just ask.

Alright so Stoic is officially running with Student of Mythology as his high concept.

He was having some issues with coming up with his character's trouble though. The problem was, it was so open-ended that he was just plain having trouble narrowing his scope of things. I started by telling him what I did when I first made a character.

I thought about who I wanted him to be, how I wanted him act, and make his decisions, and I wanted to give Jar something he could use readily as a compel to hold me to that. So I thought about it and realized he wasn't going to just walk away from a job, or someone who needed his help, and in most situations he wouldn't just let things be 'satisfactory'. So in the end I came up with Can't Leave Well Enough Alone for my trouble.

He ran with the idea of something with learning, wanting to know. His character loves the stories, the magic of it all, and pursuit of the truths behind them. He also wanted it to be something I can essentially use against him because lets face it. Trouble is trouble. So I expanded on it with him.
Maybe he can't stand being kept out of the loop, or just plain not knowing . Maybe he saw something when he was younger and wants desperately to find proof to explain it.

In the end we ended up with his trouble being Can't Accept Anything Less Than the Truth.

It's a great defining aspect of his character, and one that can get him into a lot of trouble.
