That analogy clarifies it. I still don't approve of penalties in zOMG! though. We haven't needed them thus far.
I've actually played Torchlight - I wasn't aware it had an element system actually. I don't recall my attacks ever being gimped. o.O
As to why I'm grumpy... Probably because:
1) It's a game paradigm that I don't think would suit zOMG!. Elemental factors are a mainstay of many other MMOs. zOMG! would have a better niche in the market if it focused on elements in a more purely RP... err.. element.
2) Resistances are penalties. The last time I proposed something with penalties, it got shot down in flames (fairly too, mind). I'm just miffed that it's now getting thunderous ovation.
Ok, I'm looking into this, I pretty much kept them because they're expected.
Similarly, people probably don't notice the Shift or Red effects.
We do and we use it to our advantage o3o

pirate Not optimal, we have the opportunity to address gameplay issues with this and doing so would probably be better long-term. This is both a game and a community, I think the first currently needs more help. Improving it could at the same time improve the second.
One of my goals is to somehow reconcile mechanically relevant with RP Free, and I'm getting close. The current idea, upon closer look, has flaws that need working on and details that need fleshing out. It can be done. I'll prove it to ye and we'll both be happeh.
2) I got Lucky: less people around, most expect this out of an Elemental system due to its RPScissors nature, my idea wasn't very detailed if you look at it closely, the focus is on the random part (we're assuming a typical system remember), and I'm not the first to propose such, you pretty much were.
