This thread gives me the means to share my opinions on avatar outfits whether you are happy with your look, worried about it, trying out a new thing, or maybe you have too much spare time and will use it to read my thread. And feel free to read the rules too...it may save you grief later.

I thought that quote would be a good way to start out this section of my thread. Many people, especially when they first join, assume good looking avatars can only be done by having excessive ammounts of gold and/or really expensive rare items. It is true that what the contents of our inventory are do limit how we can dress. So if you have planned carefully and thought ahead about the look you want, making an outfit won't be soo difficult. Even if you only have enough cloths for just one outfit it CAN be a good outfit.

The importance of Basic Avatar Appearence!!

What is Basic Avatar Appearence? Is is your hair style and color, eye style and color, mouth choice, and skin tone. Of these options given to you when you registered to become a member of Gaia your hair style and color, and your eye style and color will be the most noticable things once you dress up your avatar.
....how you look when naked ninja ....

**Look at your naked self, do you have a unnnatural hair color? If you do your inventory should be ready to compliment that unnatural hair color. If you do have a natural hair color you don't nave to worry as much. This is because if a person in real life would change thier hair color so it was pink they probably really like that color and would use it in thier cloths. Like pink shoelaces, pink wristbands, etc. But a person with brown hair may not go to lengths to make sure they have brown pants or brown shoes.

**Also matching your hair and eye color can make you appear to look better then a person who doesn't. Even if you had a better outfit, it doesn't match your basic appearence, thus you look not good.
BAD EXAMPLE

DID NOT compliment their basic appearence, but instead wears random items. This is a poorly designed outfit.

GOOD EXAMPLE

These avatars incorparated both their hair and eye color in their outfits. The more slots you fill the more potential for your outfit(if planned good)



How to place items on your avatar!

Well we now know how important Basic Avatar Appearence is, so lets use this to our advantage when placing items on our avatar. Where you place items on your avatar is directly related to what color the item is. Working with a single color, monochromatic, can be a diffcult taste because you could wind up looking very bad and feel frustrated. So working with even just 2 colors can be easy on mind and budget. A very easy and common tactic to use is using white or black with your main color.

So where do we place our color? This is different for guy and girl. Guys and girls have different slots in some areas which gives them unique items and potential to use those slots.
GENDER UNIQUE SLOTS:
-Male- Elbow, Knee
-Female-Bra, Ankle
Unfairly the options for the female unqiue slot are larger then then the guy's unique slots.

Optiminally you have an idea for an outfit and an inventory with items you like with a few for each slot you really use. Now heres the tricky part, try to spread out your main color(s) you are using. eek That is tricky! However you can use some tactics for accomplishing this.

Just some spacing, the two examples.

These are the general areas of placing items on your avatar.

If you want your outfit to have the biggest impact try using the main colors your want on the larger areas, The Torso, The Legs, The Feet, The Head.

GOOD EXAMPLES:


Each color in the main body; Torso, Legs, Feet, Head; is somewhere else on the body...AND they compliment their basic appearence.

Find out what you want to be: Before you buy your first item take a look around all the stores, and check out all the non-store items HERE, Price Guides. Also check out certain combos at the Gaia Avatar Creator [which is female only at the moment]for best results, and you can also save the picture and ask for a rating on it. Think about what item you like most and think you can get. Then look around around and think about things would look good with that item. Taking a little time to think can prevent you from creating regretful purchases later on.

The very basics: Shirt, pants, shoes. IN some way, shape or form. Work up from there ^_^ Because since our avatars are little people, and people generally wear at least pants, shirt, and shoes...I think its a good way to begin planning for a nice outfit.

Avatar Appearance effects clothing choices: Yeah having a good well thought blue outfit then having bright green hair is a not favorable... Because if you think about it. If in real life a person took the time to dye their hair pink wouldn't they want to wear items that match, compliment that color they spent time and money on to acheive? It may be a simple matter of push the button here on Gaia, but we are chibi people...with wings growing out of our heads non-the-less. But then again if you are not going for a human look I can turn my eyes the other way maybe.

Some styles take imagination: A good example of this is people who are Kitsune pals...the Fox Items only come in one color, red. People can wear fox items but can have a non-red outfit explaining that their role-play is a blue kitsune, or green. This can also be done for those role-playing their avatars, making the best of Gaia items, simply because the items selection does not have the proper items to truly complete their look.

Follow color rules: Some colors go together, while others simply don't. What colors do go together. Well I find every time I try to place an example or right and wrong I am proven wrong . I am not a divine being that magically think up every possible combination of items on Gaia and thus judge what is absolutely right and thus what is wrong.

So in my best advice you have to be judge of how to make color match wisely. Keep in mind the shading, brightness, and overall look of the item. Yeah that’s pretty general sorry. But I cannot think up all the possible combinations for you. But I can suggest that black and white both go with every color. Since they are the most extreme of the shades in the color world. But remember some black and white items have different shading, and/or aren't the color they say they are. Also getting the color in the same shade on several pieces of clothing would be a standard way to match better. Like getting a dark green with dark green. As opposed to dark green with very bright green for the most part would mot match as well. But I am sure that there are exceptions somewhere.

Koma-chan here shows how to nicely put red and green together and not look like a X-mas reject! Gold star for Koma-chan!! 4laugh And other cute avatars.

Be wary of very common commons: If there ever were items that were for advanced Gaians these are them, the common commons(Flame Set, Goth Set, Mink Set for example). For whatever reason they are the most common purchase for new users. And are bought as a set *shivers* and not be used in a way that does not do the avatar or the item justice. That is my opinion on these items. The same nearly borders for people buying the Goth set items of either gender. Very common, not done well with most people in my opinion. Heres some creative examples of nicely done Flame cloths.


Key tips to accessorize: A very common comment in Avatar Talk is to add accessories to your avatar. Good places to add items to your avatar are your neck, your eyes, your head, and the newly made side slot. Things like Romani Sunglasses or Emo glasses are a very nice way to add a new dimension to your avatar, or maybe color visors. Uncommon collars or store bought lockets(cheaper) can ease any sort of odd neckline your shirt may have. And head items are always a good touch. Someone who pulls off a head item creatively has good fashion skills . Other more easy ways to accessorize is to add gloves.

Having something on your head is good: This will be the most common comment ever heard in Avatar Talk. And as Gaia gets bigger with more items, stuff for your head will become more common. Also is good for when you have no idea what to do for your avatar....you've given up, just cover up your head as much as possible and feel the joys!

To expand on this some hairstlyes look horribly stupid with certain hat/head items. Mostly store-bought hats. So check the store preview carefully and see if your hair gets weird floating chunks or if it squeezes your head oddly. And I like brown paper bags, so sue me.

Items as a Set: Origionally I had this only listing ways for clothing items as a set, or one peice clothing like the Kimonos, Yukutas. But there other types of sets too. Anyway for the most part sets do not look good together, and are very common. An example of using a set in a uncreative way would be buying the whole Inverse Set. Yes it would match but thats just not creative. So if you can use some items of the inverse set with other Gaia items you will actually look more unique and better.

Though there are some items that do not look well without the other. This can include, but is not limited too, Tuxedos, animal parts( example: Cat Ears and Cat Tail go best together), the Pimp Set, Gown's with (at least) the shoes they come with, etc. I say etc. because this is based on my opinion, and if you have any more you think should be added to the list please post and give me your opinion.

Here I have collected several avatars that may be wearing parts or a complete set. But have done some things to make them set apart from someone else wearing essentially the same parts of the outfit. We call that accessorizing.


Have your own specail theme: Maybe your goal is to always wear the Bunny Luv, or to never have pants. It could even be that you are attached to your hair color and everything you own much revolve around it. CaoSlayer is one bad santa heart .

Very very rare items do NOT make the uber avatar: Yes there are some items that you will never own, a like a Halo, Headphones, Jacked-up shirt? Well we have to live without them and move on. And those who have such items are not necissarilly good looking.
So my point is don't just get the set and think you are complete. Use these items creatively, the same goes for using any items that may be the fad of fashion at the time.

Don't worry: Worrying about how you look and getting pissed off at people is not worth it, its just pixels. 3nodding

Being poor isn't an excuse: Getting offensive about why you are poorly dressed, then blaming it on poverty is not acceptable. Complete outfits can be made with under 2,000 gold. And when you start a new account you get 400 free gold plus peasant cloths. This is a link for the Sponser links which give free gold!!

Then make a few posts and you can buy a trading pass withen your first hours of being on Gaia Online. Or you could buy a shirt, pants, shoes, then save the rest of your gold.

Most of all be sure to make yourself happy: Even if technicially your avatar is not the best it could be, or the most origional, just do what makes you happy. As long as you really do like the way you look you have every right to look that way.

<center>Black and White item guide Part 2!!

Not updated since Oct 1st, but when I do its gonna be totally redone! ^_^ My goal for update it end of the year 2004

The Whiteness Scale!!
The white scale is biased on a few things, one is the outline color of the white item, two is the shading on the white item. For example the White Street Pants have a lot of grey shadding in them and thier outline color is grey/black. While, Felicia's shoes have a more blue toned outline, and have a blue tone shading. So that breaks the white items of Gaia down into two basic group, the grey shadded group and the blue shadded group. Mixing these groups most likely will result in a bad mix of white items.

There is also the intensity of which the item is shadded. Some items have very little shadding while others have intense shadding. To make this simple I will use a mild, moderate, and servere scale for shadding. Example of mild is Bunny Luv, example of moderate is Lex White Shorts(Male-White Sneakers), example of servere is White Street Pants.

The Grey lined shade group: Example, White Street Pants, abbreviation is...(G)

The Blue lined shade group: Example Felicia's Shoes(Male-White Sneakers) abbreviation is...(B)

Mild: Mild use of outline color, example Bunny Luv...1

Moderate: Use of shadding is apparent throughout thingy but it does not intrude on the whiteness of item, example Felicia's Shoes...2

Servere: Use of shadding is more then 50% of item color, example White Street Pants...3



Female items White
The ability to tell wheather an item it outlined in grey or blue can become contraversal in very lightly shaded items. So in some items what I may see as blue you may see a grey, and vice versa. ^_^
