  • So what's the deal?
    Pretty simple. Art contest. Read further posts for the contest and sub-contest rules
  • When does the contest end?
    May 31, 2006, 11:59 PM EST
  • Who can enter?
    Anybody with 'net access!
  • Do I need to upload anywhere specific?
    deviantArt is preferable, for my own reasons, but you can host anywhere. However, I'd like to ask that whatever gallery you upload to be publicly visible, so I can make my own comparisons to check for art theft.
  • Don't you trust us?
    For the most part, yes. But a gallery I and others can view easily will make it easier for the skeptics to see you're legit, or for me to check up on an artist who has been accused of art theft.
  • How long do I need to keep the image up?
    At least until I add it to the list of entries (I will host it on my own Photobucket). You are allowed to delete the image from your own gallery after that, if you want to.
  • What sort of art do you expect?
    Anything I can identify as fitting the guidelines I set out. Watercolor, CG, crayon, pixel, anything!
  • Pixel art? So I can do avi edits or dolls?
    Yes, but you'll need provide very convincing evidence that the doll base, and all hair/clothing/etc, belong to either you or an artist you're collaborating with (avi edits are exempt from proof of base ownership, but still need to provide evidence of all other efforts).
  • Oh, so collabs are accepted? What's the rules on that?
    No more than two artists per entry, to make it easy to split the prize evenly. If you want to collab with multiple artists, you'll have to submit multiple entries (yes, you're allowed to do that)!
  • Am I allowed to have multiple colorists color copies of the same lineart?
    Absolutely. It's your lineart, after all, you can do whatever you want with it so long as it meets the contest guidelines! As long as you only have one colorist for each copy you submit, everything is fine; you can submit as many copies as you want! However, only one copy can win a prize.
  • What if the other artist decides to forfeit their half of the prize?
    They'll need to post & say so. Call me a skeptic, but I need to hear it from the person giving up the prize, not the person the prize is going to.
  • If I do collabs, am I allowed to submit individual entries as well?
    You bet!
  • What happens if my collab and my individual entry both win?
    If the individual entry ranks higher than the collab, you will receive the higher prize, while the artist you collaborated with will receive the full prize for whichever place the collab ranked.
  • And if the collab rates higher than the individual?
    The two prizes will be combined and split evenly.
  • Can I win in both the main contest and the chibi contest?
    No. You are more than welcome to submit to both the main and chibi contests, but because there is only one chibi prize, it will not be given to anyone who has won a prize in the main contest.
  • Do I need to draw my entry in CLAMP style?
    Only if that's how you normally draw. I'd much rather see contestants apply themselves to their own style, than submit an inferior entry because they were trying to copy somebody else's style.
  • Am I allowed to sign or watermark my entry/entries?
    Yes, but please do so in the corner of the image. I'd really rather not see entries with symbols and signatures plastered all over the main portion of the image.
  • What happens if I don't like one of your rules?
    Feel free to post about it, but be civil. I will do my best to deal with your issue and may even alter the contest guidelines accordingly, but if you really piss me off I will not hesitate to bring in a moderator.
  • Your rules say "pose is up to the artist." Does this mean that I can draw them [~]?
    You can draw anything you want so long as the image does not violate the Gaia ToS, although I'd like to request no "romantic" or violent images.
  • No violence? But I can still draw them holding their weapons/using their magic, right?
    Yes
  • Can I draw them holding other objects?
    As long as it's in their character to hold such a thing, yes. No lazer guns or beer bottles! Things like teacups, flowers, and Mokona are fine.
  • How big can I make the image?
    Keep it reasonable. If you're going to do a wallpaper, I'd prefer 1024x768, but please keep it under 1000x1000 otherwise. Please keep an eye on the filesize as well. Your entry will not be disqualified based on size but it's annoying if they're too big.
  • Can I do a chibi drawing of the Magic Knights for my submission into the main contest?
    Yes! Just be sure to follow all other existing guidelines of the main contest.
  • The chibi contest doesn't specify costumes, only that they must be from the anime/manga. Does this mean I can draw [~]?
    You are allowed to draw chibi characters wearing any outfit they wear in the anime or manga. This includes Hikaru's kendo outfit, Emeraude's armor, etc.
  • What's with the titles you've given the contest & categories?
    Those are the English translations of the titles to Japanese Rayearth songs, bweheh.

GIRLS, BE AMBITIOUS!

I got a hefty amount o' money for Christmas. While wandering thru SunCoast with the intent of abusing my boyfriend's employee discount, I came across the DVD box set of Magic Knight Rayearth season 2. Watching it for the first time in year, I realized how much I really love the costumes from that series. And thus was spawned the idea for this contest.

Draw the Magic Knights!

  • All three Magic Knights must be in the image
  • Hikaru in the middle is preferable but not required
  • Pose is entirely up to the artist, but please keep it modest
  • They must either be in their final armor, their costumes from Autozam / Chizeta / Fahren, or their OVA school uniforms
  • No mix-&-match! They must either all be in armor, all in the foreign costumes, or all in the school uniforms!
  • Full-body or waist-up images are preferred.
  • Entries must be at least partially in color
  • No complex backgrounds, please. Your entry won't be disqualified but I'd rather keep things simple.
  • Excluding copyright info, no text.
  • You can enter as many images as you want, but can only win one prize
  • Rules are subject to change, but not in ways that will disqualify any existing or in-progress entries

Do not post about it or harrass the artist - I want to keep unnecessary drama at a minimum. Contestants who harrass other contestants (for any reason) will be disqualified.

Contestants, please be aware that traced, eyeballed, and other copied images are not allowed. It is not original art if you draw the exact same image you're using as a reference, and by both Gaia's and my own standards it is a form of art theft!

Alright, I know some of you are too lazy to do a fullbody/waist-up, or that it just isn't your style. Or maybe you've already done one, but out of the kindness of your heart decided you wanted to do something more. For you, I present the chibi sub-contest.

Chibi rules

  • You can draw any character who has a name. IE, you can draw Mira, but not Mira's mother.
  • Costumes must be from the manga or anime. No OVA costumes!
  • If you use a manga costume that is not in the anime, please let me know which issue/page the costume is from.
  • Pose is entirely up to the artist, but please keep it modest
  • One character per entry in non-couples entries, please
  • Couples or Mokona+Primera images are acceptable
  • Yes, you can draw Ascot's beasts or enemy monsters, if they are called by name at any point in the series
  • Yes, you can draw the GTO/FTO, Chizeta's Djinn, and the Mashin / Rune-Gods / whatever-the-hell-else-they're-called
  • Entries must be in color
