Long ago in a galaxy far, far away... What, wrong story? Oh, my bad.

Everyone's heard of Hogwarts, the prestigious school where young witches and wizards from all over the world can come to receive an education. But nobody has ever heard of such a place for other mythical creatures... until now.

Enter Verlyn and Tessa Ramsey, a vampire couple with momentous ambitions. Frustrated at the world's lack of educational centers for children who aren't Muggles or wizards, the duo took it upon themselves to establish Limina Academy for Magical Creatures, a place where the magical races can mix freely and learn without having to worry about exposing magic to people who know nothing about it. Though some amongst the magical communities have expressed concern or outrage upon learning of the project, the school will soon be opening and accepting students for the very first time. Only time will tell whether this ambitious new undertaking will be a failure or a success.

Welcome to the world of Limina! In this story, you can be whoever or whatever you'd like- and we do mean anything. In a world where your teachers range from a slightly loopy centaur to a beautiful mermaid, anything goes and everyone is accepted. So come on in, get comfortable, and enjoy the chaos that is sure to enfold within the halls of Limina. Beware, however; among those who disagree with the idea that the magical races should mix, a special force is rising in opposition. You may, in fact, choose to join the ranks of this opposition, or you may choose to ally yourselves with the students and faculty of Limina. Whichever you decide, you will surely find a place within this role-play.

If you're interested in the history behind Limina, an article from the Daily Prophet concerning the opening of the school can be found here.

- Be nice to your fellow roleplayers. Cooperation is the key to a good RP. Don't god-mod.
- Though it is stated in the Gaia TOS, I will reiterate that cybering is not allowed. Romance is okay, so long as it not gratuitous. Skip past anything more than PG-13.
- No lewd pictures are allowed. People come to read your post, not to be blinded by too much flesh. If you are unsure whether your picture falls into this category, it probably does, but you may PM it to me for my opinion.
- If you will be gone for any extended period of time or if you have any other restrictions (such as only having internet on the weekends, etc.), please make us aware.
- I have final say on any issues that may arise. Respect my authority.

α ρ ρ ʟ ʏ ι ɴ ɢ

- Send me your character's profile in a PM titled "Limina Application" and wait for me to accept it before you post. Reservations are not necessary, but if you want to reserve a teacher spot to make sure it is still open when you finish your profile, PM me a reservation request titled "Limina Reservation".
- For the sake of consistency, only anime style pictures are allowed for character references. No real pictures or 3-D renderings.
- Be aware that if you choose to be a hybrid (e.g. half something, half something else) your profile will be in much more scrutiny. You will need a very good reason outlined in your biography for this to be allowed.

s c н σ σ ʟXʀ υ ʟ є s

- When posting, follow The Miniskirt Rule: long enough to cover everything, but short enough to keep it interesting. There are cases where a paragraph will cover everything. Don't force yourself to write more than is necessary. That being said, this is semi-lit. Use your grammar and spelling and make a decent attempt at each post.
- Post codes are neither discouraged nor encouraged. Your choice. However, I have some requests:
      - For the main content of your post, please use a medium to dark color and font size 11 to 12. I don't want to strain my eyes trying to read your hard work.
      - Regardless of whether it is in the post code or in your post itself, include your character's name at least once in every post. Even though you might, readers don't always know who the "he" or "she" you speak of is.
      - Remember that your post itself is the main attraction. A fancy code means nothing without some meat behind it.
- This story is what you make it. Be inventive and have fun!

Now, below you see a very simple looking skeleton. No tricks; this is all that you need to send in (see rules for more instruction).
If you would like to add a color or two, be my guest, just make sure my eyes don't bleed and that the text is legible without highlighting.

These are going to work pretty much just like an actual school would. They will be assigned randomly unless otherwise specified, two to a room and separated by gender. There are (obviously) more rooms available than what I have listed, so don't worry that you might lose a spot.

Humans and creatures that do not need special accommodations are assigned to the standard dorms. Nymphs, mermaids, and other creatures that require water are assigned to the aquatic dorms. Creatures who normally reside in the forest (such as centaurs, giants, and satyrs) are assigned to the forest dorms. Very rarely will exceptions be made; there must be a valid reason for your character to switch dorms/rooms before we will allow it.

sтαɴɗαʀɗ ɗσʀм

      1. Leomaris Aberforth Zephyrus/Quentin Adael Ramsey
      2. Rebecca Mae Ramsey/Charlie Zarkit
      3. Zahir/Louie Simpas
      4. Jena Amani Kader/Gloria Rivers
      5. Charlie Zarkit/Jasper

The standard dorms can be found inside the castle, in a special wing on the fifth floor. Much like the common rooms at Hogwarts, these dorms are protected by a portrait of Limina's founder, Adael Astrid (a grumpy man with graying purple hair and an affinity for cake). Expect him to grumble a little at you before letting you in, especially if you're interrupting his tea time. You can also expect the password to change monthly, and it will most likely always be some flavor of cake. Right now, the password is "Marble with Rum Raisin Icing," but don't tell anyone who isn't in your dorm! Behind the portrait, you will find a cozy and spacious common room, with a crackling fire and bright decor. This large room, equipped with couches, study areas, and a small snack bar, leads to the dorms. Again, like Hogwarts, the girls' dorms are on one side and the boys' dorms are on the other. The hallways that jut from the main common room lead to a great number of rooms, and each can be customized to suit the occupants. To accommodate a large number of students, this area is very large, containing more than one floor of rooms (though so far our characters are all inhabiting the first floor).

αqυαтιc ɗσʀм

      1. Eglantine Mimboro Grotto/Emilia Killshetha
      2. Seuna/Cypress Thatcher
      3. Halcyon Rhea Pearce/VACANT
      4. VACANT
      5. VACANT

The aquatic dorms can (obviously) be found at the lake. To enter, the student must first walk to the end of the dock and either jump or ease in. When underwater, the student will reach a large round door like the one guarding the woodland dorms. The student must speak the password (which is currently "Spiny Coelacanth" ) to the door, which will then open and suck the student through a small underwater tunnel. This tunnel opens into a large pool, where the student can exit and transition back into his or her human form. This pool happens to be in the center of the large common room, which appears to be a large enchanted bubble. This bubble allows the students to enjoy spectacular views of sea life while remaining dry and warm. Decorated with a lovely seaside theme, the common room (like the other two) features cozy areas where students can hang out and study, both underwater (in the pool) and above the water. On either side, the common room splits into tunnels; one set of tunnels for the girls and one for the boys. These tunnels lead to individual bubbles designed for two, which serve as dorms for the aquatic creatures. These, like the other two dorms, can be customized, and may also be changed at the touch of a button to allow the students to see their surroundings outside of the bubble. This is done for privacy purposes (so that the bubble can be closed to the outside while a student is changing or sleeping, but open when they wish to have a nicer view). The lake, much like the forest, has been enchanted so that nobody (aside from a student assigned to them) may see or enter the underwater dorms.

ωσσɗℓαиɗ ɗσʀм

      1. Zilah Garell/Nerys Ginevra
      2. Tha'rumai/Vanyel
      3. Eridessa Dayson/VACANT
      4. VACANT
      5. VACANT

The woodland dorms can be found just a small walk from the main castle building, behind a large wall covered in vines. To enter, the student must whisper the password (which is currently "Orange Rhododendron" ) to the large double doors, which will then open to allow access to the area. The common room is a large outdoor area, arranged to look much like a communal area in a park might. Flowers and a large assortment of plants cover the landscape, and there are special covered gazebos where students may congregate and study. This area is enchanted so that, even in inclement weather, the common area will remain a pleasant temperature and will never be affected by rain or snow. The dorm rooms, much like in the standard dorms, are separated on either side into male and female dorms, and each "room" is a little two-person cottage nestled among wooded pathways. Once again, each cottage can be personalized to suit the students' needs, and the area is large enough to accommodate a large number of students. In order to protect this area from unwanted intruders, many wards and enchantments are in place around the section of the forest so that nobody on the outside can see in or enter. The only entrance to this area is the large set of doors in the wall.

Considering all the variations of mystical creatures over the years, this list establishes canon for the species within our world. If an important fact is mentioned in RP, it will be added here and other RPers of that species will be expected to follow suit for the sake of consistency. If you are the first of a species in RP, this does mean you can (within reason) improvise things that aren't clear elsewhere, but are necessary for your posting purposes.

This list is by no means all-inclusive, but is more a list of ideas and currently existing species. If you would like to play a race not here, feel free to ask. Not listed are species such as elves, fairies, goblins, and demons (for a few examples). If you don't like any of the species on this list, but need ideas, this page has a very detailed list of possible species you can choose from.

Centaurs
Though entirely their own species, these beings appear to have the upper half of a human attached to the body of a horse.

Genies, Djini, Jinn
These beings appear to be human, though they often have various colors of skin and hair abnormal to humans.
Djini make their home in a lamp, and when entering and exiting it, their legs turn into an ethereal tail and they shrink down to fit.
Despite popular belief, genies can grant a single master more than three wishes. This causes a more lengthy relationship between the Djini's master and his/herself.
Djini have a period called The Transition that is much like puberty. While in this phase, a Djini will find it extremely hard to deny any wish, be it from her master or not.
Djini are entities created by dark, half-forgotten magic that would be forbidden if it hadn't become so obscure.
While Djini do have limited magical ability on their own, their power is remarkably stronger when granting a wish.

Harpies
Harpy society is clan-based, and each clan functions separately.
There is a tribal government with one member from each clan, but obedience to them is certainly not a guarantee.
Most harpy clans are thieves and steal to survive.
They have long life spans, averaging around 150 years.
They can live longer by devouring humans they have lured with their voices.
Eating humans will also deform harpies over time.
Any magic user has greater resistance to a harpy's voice than non-magic users.
Harpies are generally considered hostile to any race, sometimes even their own.
Harpies can conceal their true form with a human form, which doesn't necessarily reflect their true form.
Most harpies can change forms by two years old, though rarely before that.

Kemonomimi
Humans with some animal qualities, such as fox ears or a monkey tail. These are sometimes mistakenly called "Nekomimi," which actually only refers to cat variants.

Kitsune
Kitsune can be in a two basic forms. One is an astral form, where they are more susceptible to magic spells and attacks, but safer from physical attacks. The other is a manifested form, where they take on a physical form. In this form, their powers are weaker and they are in danger of being physically hurt, or even getting sick, but are able to survive similar to a human with supernatural abilities.
They may eat food to survive, but must feed on the elements (water, fire, etc.) if they wish to recharge their powers. If not, a manifested kitsune may wait and recover their powers very slowly on its own. In order to stay physical, a kitsune has to feed a lot.
Common powers include illusions, shapeshifting, possession, dream walking, and especially the ability to use fox-fire.
Kitsune have enhanced bite, durability, endurance, senses, hearing, smell, speed, stamina, night vision, strength, and can maintain a certain body temperature for long periods of time. They can also fly.
Most kitsune feed off of different things, such as the elements. Though they can feed off of any of the elements, most have the element that they are most attuned to, which gives them the most energy and pleasure.
A kitsune's most attuned element gives them some sort of ability. For example, if a kitsune's element was fire, then they would use fox-fire with ease, have the ability to control fire, and be most comfortable near or within fire. Fire would not harm them. With water, the kitsune is most likely unable to use fox-fire very well, but is exceptional at healing.
A kitsune gains tails as it matures. Usually, they begin with one tail, and gain one every 100 years. However, they may gain a tail when they learn something of great importance. The more tails a kitsune has, the more wisdom and power it has.
A kitsune with two tails is twice as powerful as a kitsune with one, while kitsune with three tails is twice as powerful as kitsune with two, and so on and so forth. The most tails one can have is nine, and after that, the kitsune may join the Celestial Courts, becoming all knowing, and basically a higher level God.

Magical Animals
Unicorns, hippogryffs, dragons
These are not full blown characters. They are beasts, albeit smarter than your average muggle animal, but still a beast. However, they exist around the campus and could possibly be a companion. (Just don't go bringing them into class...)

Merpeople, Sirens
Beings that look like humans when dry, but whose legs turn into a large fin when wet.
Merpeople will dry up and die if out of water too long. The kiss of one will physically heal a human and her tears have magical properties.
Have lungs and breathe air. Typically are afraid of fire and avoid heat as it will dry them out. Possess a weakness to iron.

Metamorphmagus
Humanoids that can change their appearance. Think of a human version of the Pokemon Ditto.

Mino-Leotaurs
Families are often raised in isolation, and pups are raised by the mother alone for their first year of life.
Whenever a mino-leotaur is fed human flesh, they go into a rampage based on how much flesh they've eaten.
After the rampage, they are exhausted and sometimes fall straight to sleep.
Female and male mino-leotaurs are flat-chested.
In their culture, it is uncommon to wear clothing of any kind.
Mino-leotaur lifespans and physical aging are based on will: If a mino-leotaur tires of living, they die, and if they need to mature, they do.

Naga and Nagi
Though humanoid from the waist up, these beings sport a snake tail from there down.

Puppets
Puppets are created and spread much like a disease: each puppet functions to spread and create more puppets.
Any prosthetic limb a puppet possesses has extraordinary strength and can crush metal.
A puppet's goal is simply to spread as quickly and efficiently as possible while extinguishing any resistance.
Puppets are controlled by a parasite-like organism that controls them via their prosthetic limbs.
They retain some control over the parts of their body not replaced, and must therefore wear bird-like masks that contain drugs that suppress their emotions.
It is not yet known whether or not there is a cure for being a puppet.

Queztalcoatls
Ancient, immortal feathered serpent dragons descended from the Aztec God himself. It is nearly impossible to fund a full blooded Queztalcoatl. Most are half but see themselves as full.
They have the ability to hide their brightly feathered wings and colorful scales for more neutral colors to appear human. They cannot hide their tails.
They are nearly extinct. (So have a VERY good reason on why your character is one.)
Very minor manipulation of the elements. This is powered up by blood sacrifices by followers. It is something that rarely occurs, so the only one who has true control is the original Queztalcoatl.
Can only be killed by obsidian blades.
Their abilities are powered by the sunlight.

Satyrs, Fauns
Appear like humans with a goat's legs, tail, hooves and horns. Can also have goat-like ears or fur over part of their bodies.
Live very long lives, but are not immortal. Maintain a youthful appearance throughout life.
Very free-spirited; tend to take life as it comes. They dance and party often, and the ability to play pan flute is an almost racial talent.
Herbivores. Typically live in forests and wear minimal clothing, if any.

Selkies
ALL Selkies require their seal pelt to turn into a seal. Without it they are left longing for the sea and under an unbreakable trance that makes them do the bidding of the one who stole it. Side effects of having a pelt stolen/hidden/burned/destroyed is that the Selkie's longing for the sea gets worse with each day to the point that it aches the bones with every glance or thought at the sea or any form of water.
Selkies can mate with each other and other magical aquatic creatures to create more Selkies and other magical aquatic creatures. But only Muggle children can be born from a Selkie and human mate, even if the other partner is a witch or wizard.
All Selkies have strong pheromones that attract the opposite sex. These pheromones get stronger with time. That being said, the male Selkies can control what they can do with their pheromones, but females cannot.
It is acceptable that male Selkies can use their pheromones to their advantage, because there is a lesser chance of their pelt being stolen. But females tend to be more virtuous and more susceptible to pelt theft(because Selkies do not have super strength). Any females that are caught enjoying the effects of their pheromones are usually cast away from Selkie society. It is very rare for this to happen.
Selkie pelts have a very high price on the wizard market as water proof material. Due to the mistreatment of Selkies, they are now protected by the Ministry of Magic.
Selkies have been known to live up to 800 years or more if their pelts have not been stolen. Land-bound Selkies typically live to 400. 200 years if their pelts have been burned. This means Selkies age slowly. The oldest recorded Selkie is 925 years old. She lives in Antarctica with her great grandchildren.

Squibs and Other Non-magical Humans
Sometimes, a mommy wizard and a daddy wizard have a baby that's not a wizard. That baby is called a Squib.
These humans may have magical abilities such as transforming into animals, but they are not wizards.

Undines
Undines lack souls, and this plays a large part in their personalities.
The only way for them to get a soul is for them to marry a male (human or otherwise). If this male is ever unfaithful, he will die within seven years.
They are essentially water elementals and often take a form similar to mermaids.
Also like mermaids, they possess singing abilities and the ability to manipulate water. The older an undine, the better the control.
Undines are almost invariably depicted as being female, and are usually found in oceans, forest pools, and waterfalls.

Valkyries
Valkyries are always females.
They usually have wings and the gift of flight.
They are tall and well built warrior women.
Their eyes glow pure white with no pupils and take a bit of an ethereal air about them when they are around someone who is within hours of dying; this is also when they are strongest.
They are often skilled in broadswords, spears or Norse bows, and arrows.
They all have the ability to move from the mortal realm, to the spirit realm, to the gates of Valhalla and can take anyone with them when they go.
They feed off of the essence of death left behind when the spirit leaves the body.

Vampires
Live forever unless met with a wooden stake to the heart or prolonged sunlight. Comparatively to humans, they age with a logarithmic curve, so while they tend to keep a youthful look for a long time, the oldest and wisest vampires may have some gray hair.
Have no heartbeat nor flowing blood and do not need to breathe, though they may mimic breathing to blend in with humans. Do not sleep. Have superhuman strength and exceptional memory.
Have extraordinarily pale skin and will slowly fry to death in sunlight.
Are repelled by garlic.
Drink human blood through straw-like fangs and cannot process non-liquids, but will not turn a human into a vampire save by injection of their venom.
Turned Vampires retain some of their human traits, such as the ability to eat human food and to sleep. They are less strong and a bit less durable than pure-blood vampires, but also more resistant to sunlight.

Veela
Beautiful humanoids who can lure humans in with the sound of their voice. When angered, they turn into monstrous and dangerous bird-people.

Werebeasts
A human that, when a certain cue (often a full moon) hits, transforms into a carnivorous animal and goes into a berserk rage.
A bite or other exposure to the saliva or blood of a werebeast will turn the attacked into one.

The Ins and Outs of Limina: FAQ

What sort of subjects are at this school?
Any imaginable muggle school course, plus a few others to either help creatures adapt to living in the human world (e.g. Human Disguises) or to celebrate the magical world without requiring access to magic (e.g. History of Magic or The Elvish Language).
      A non-inclusive list of subjects:
        - Sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.
        - Maths like algebra or calculus
        - History and Culture courses about humans and about other species
        - Languages such as English, French, Elvish, German, and Orcish.
        - Technology classes
        - Athletic and health courses
        - Music and Art courses
        - Courses derived from the magical realm such as Non-magical Potion Brewing, Human Disguises, and Care of Magical Animals.

How does the school year/career work?
As per Hogwarts, Limina is a school for grades 1-7, equating ages 11-17 at the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The year is split into two semesters, with a break around the end of the calendar year and another during the summer months. There are more general classes for lower level students and more difficult, specialized classes for their higher-level peers.
Stepping past the fourth wall, let's be honest and say that no one in the RP land actually cares to create a whole schedule for their character, nor does anyone actually care if you're meeting graduation requirements. If you pick a class or two to have your character in (perhaps coordinate it with others via the OOC or by joining a populated class), everything will go splendidly.

What about different ages among the magical creatures?
Indeed, it is hard to accommodate both a 200 year-old dryad with a 16 year-old Squib, and in order to deal with the possibility, age is not a factor in acceptance to Limina. All students, even those who are well into their adult years, undergo the same 7 years in order to graduate. Though it is possible for one to take tests to get the credits for certain classes without having to take them, one would still need to fulfill all graduation requirements and take at least one full year of courses.

Why are Squibs allowed?
Imagine you are a member of a family where you are the only child lacking magical abilities. While your sisters and brothers go to Hogwarts, you are almost forced to turn your back on the magical world and live a normal life despite knowing about the magical world. Squibs are accepted since Limina offers an education equivalent to that of any Muggle school, but does not force them to shun the magical.
This arrangement also has the benefit of allowing actual humans in, which benefits the overall diversity of the school and helps both sides come to accept and live happily among the other.

Dorm accommodations?
      Yes.
Seriously though, there are a few sections of dorms outlined in the locations section below. There are some based near the lake at the foot of the school, some near the forest a bit farther away, and some between the school and the city, with a more urban feel. Though some creatures are given priority to certain areas, (such as merpeople to the lakeside) any species may request to be put in either of the three dorm areas. Any sort of roommate arrangement can be decided via OOC or IC.

Are there any other school accommodations for different species?
Of course, with giants, centaurs, merpeople, and pixies, the school has to be variable. All of the classrooms are larger than your average, with nesting-doll-like doors ranging from small to large and an assortment of desk and chair sizes. Though we try to arrange it based on the class rosters, if there is not enough of a suitable size, the situation will be remedied within the first few days of classes. Any other special needs will be met to the best of the school's ability. Feel free to roleplay it up.

What was that about portals in the intro?
The founders of Limina, acutely aware of the reality of offering a school for all species but being located in England, had an interesting discussion about trying to find a plane ticket for a Centaur. When the reality hit that wizards would have to be hired to apparate creatures to and from the school, they realized they had to come up with something better. One brave wizard stepped forth with an idea very similar permanent portkeys; instant transportation between two locations only requiring an object to be touched. He had managed to make one work via an old threshold, where one would simply walk into Mordor a magically attached threshold in another location. In cooperation with Limina, he founded the Portal Center near where the school was to be built.

The nearby city, Callis, sprung up after the Portal Center was established, enabling the then town, now city, to become one of the most traversed in the world due to being a crossroad between many locations. The Portal Center hosts many door-like links to different places globally; Tokyo, London, Beirut, and New York to name a few. They are traversed in a similar manner to the wardrobe of Narnia, the doors from Monster's Inc, or portals from the game Portal, whatever suits your fancy.
