Biography tabtabBarstow Holmes was a good, simple man; he'd lived in Asfalis for many years with his wife, Lara, owning a small ranch that he and Lara operated together. They were a happy couple, but they wanted to move on to the next stage in their lives – they wanted a baby. Lara already knew that she would have difficulties getting pregnant, but after several attempts, all of which ended in miscarriages, she finally got pregnant and the baby seemed to be healthy. Barstow and Lara were extremely excited for their daughter to arrive; however, only seven months into her pregnancy, Lara went into labor extremely prematurely.
In the end, Lara struggled for hours during labor, but neither she or the baby could be saved; the baby was just too premature to be able to survive and the extreme strain that Lara's body went through was too much. Barstow ended up losing both his wife and his daughter that day, and he was devastated to say the least. He went home and, having nothing left, considered offing himself so that he wouldn't have to deal with the guilt and sadness of losing his family.
However, as he lay there in front of the fireplace a broken man, Hestia appeared before him and took pity on him. She decided to give him back the daughter that he'd lost, and Barstow was given a beautiful baby girl born from Hestia's hearth. She had Lara's bright orange hair and freckles, and so he decided to name her Darlene, the name that was originally to be given to he and Lara's daughter.
Darlah had a simple but good childhood on the ranch. Throughout her whole life it was just her and her father, but they got along famously. He was always very open about who her real mother was, and though she never actually met Hestia, she loved both her and Lara as her mothers. She spent her childhood taking care of the animals on the ranch and playing endlessly in Asfalis' beautiful countryside, and she couldn't be happier.
However, her world was flipped upside down when her father died of a terminal illness when she was only fourteen years old. Just like that, Darlah went from being a happy, carefree child to a brooding and depressed one, but she at least got to stay in Asfalis. Before he died, her father ensured that the ranch wouldn't be sold and that she would live with some family friends until she was old enough to live on her own, and she did just that.
When she was nineteen, she moved back to her childhood home and began working the ranch to be able to support herself. It was around the same time that her best childhood friend, Bethany, moved back to Asfalis as well and though Darlah felt awful having driven her off when she was depressed over her father's death, she was overjoyed to have her back. It's been three years since then, and Darlah has finally found her happiness again.

Darlah was definitely a social child and had plenty of friends at school, but none of them compared to how well she got along with the nearby farmer's granddaughter, Bethany. Darlah had plenty of fond memories of fishing and swimming in the lake with her, exploring the woods with her, bringing her fresh milk from her first cow and treasuring the fresh fruits and vegetables that Beth grew all by herself and gave to her in return.
Even now, she can remember the day that she first met Bethany; it was a hot day in summer when Darlah was seven years old, and her father brought her with him to the farm nearby to get some fresh produce. The farmer, Emerson, was a big and scary man but quickly proved to be kind, and let Darlah go introduce herself to his two grandchildren, who were outside catching tadpoles. Ever the sociable and curious child, Darlah did just that and meandered up to the siblings, introducing herself and asking very politely if she could play with them.
The little boy, Isaac, took one look at seven-year-old chubby Darlah with the frizzy orange hair and freckles and immediately started bombarding her with questions. Bethany, however, was nicer to her and scolded her little brother for being so forward before asking her if she wanted to help them catch tadpoles. Darlah eagerly accepted and joined the two, and by the end of the day, she was best friends with the two kids.
As a few years passed, she became closer to Bethany than Isaac and soon, they were inseparable. They spent all the time they could together; all Darlah could remember doing when they were kids during the summer was playing outside together, swimming, fishing, or just laying in the grass and talking about their dreams. Even though they were young and naive, Darlah loved Bethany like she'd never loved anyone before.
However, when Darlah's father died when she was just fourteen, a nearly irepparable rift was made in their friendship. Depressed and unsure of what to do without her father, Darlah ended up pushing Bethany away whenever she tried to comfort or distract her. Eventually, Beth stopped trying, and it wasn't until after she'd run away from home that Darlah realized how big of a mistake she'd made. Her best friend was gone and probably hated her, and she was convinced she'd never be able to get her back.
She felt extremely guilty for what she did to Bethany, but Darlah lived with the guilt and loneliness she felt for years until she was nineteen. Around the time that she inherited her deceased father's ranch and began working it herself, she was extremely surprised when Bethany came home after the death of her grandfather and inherited the farm as well. However, she still felt like she'd driven Bethany away for good and avoided her for awhile with Beth's best interest at heart.
Only recently have they started communicating again; Darlah knows that she caused a break in their relationship that will be hard to mend, but she's determined to never lose her best friend again. Though she feels a deep longing to keep Bethany in her life, it's possible that there may be something more...
