Personality»
Tjaard is the sort of mutant who is never at a loss for what to say. He's curious, quizzical, and extroverted. He loves being around people and is personable until he is intentionally off-putting. He's also extremely flirtatious and prone to inappropriate jokes and comments. He's very physical and tends to stick close to others or touch them when it's appropriate and he is given consent. Tjaard tends to surround himself with people and interacts with others as much as possible. He is playful and can often come across as childish, between his jokes and his frequent snickering. For the most part he is light-hearted and easy to get along with, however he does have a maliciously mischievous side and is prone to causing trouble for those who get close to him.
Biography»
Tjaard was born in Everett, where he grew up. His mother was divorced by her previous husband when she became pregnant with Tjaard by another man. She was more than a little surprised when she gave birth to a winged child, but figured the man she had slept with must have been a mutant and raised the baby to the best of her abilities. Although they had little money, the two of them lived in relative comfort during their first couple of years in the states. Starting school was tricky with his mutation, but his wings hadn't fully grown and for quite some time they were able to hide them with baggy clothes and forged doctor's notes about the need to wear hats for the sun.
Shortly before he entered kindergarten his mother found someone and was remarried. Tjaard's new stepfather was sort of deadbeat; making his money on small internet businesses and online poker (an unreliable source of income that often left him relying on Tjaard's mother).
Charlie, Tjaard's stepfather, was quite fond of the small mutant boy. But his fondness was neither wanted nor healthy and quickly the relationship turned abusive. Meanwhile, Tjaard's mother grew distant. It was unclear whether it was America, the marriage, or his mutation, but she spent longer away from home and paid little heed to her child. Eventually it became his duty to forge doctor's notes, to hide his mutation as best he could.
His grades suffered as he grew older and school took more focus and he very nearly failed out of school on several occasions. He began spending more time away from home, out socializing or partying wherever he could. Tjaard found his mutation didn't particularly matter to drunk teenagers, so he let his wings out in dark rooms with strangers. Eventually, however, word spread and Xavier's school discovered his existence. He was offered a chance to leave and took it with only a few second thoughts, enrolling when he was 16. The past year at Xavier's has been healthier and happier than most of his years prior, although his grades are still terrible and his stepfather still requires he come back to Everett on a regular basis to visit (he can fly, after all).
