tab Esperanza Grew up in the Bronx and growing up in an area with a lot of hostility and gang violence genuinely shaped her into a strong determined to succeed woman. She's been through really hard times which have shaped her to work hard in everything that she sets her mind to, even her "life of crime" so to speak... It hasn't been easy for Essie, but more times than not she's managed to find that silver lining and come out of hard situations mostly unbroken. In times of crisis she's had to make some really hard choices but will often make the choice that tests her will the most in order to prove that she can accomplish it without hurting her moral standing.

tab Esperanza was in a Latino street gang that defended her part of town in which was a refuge for most undocumented citizens. During her time in "Las Catrinas" she took a strong stance on volunteering in low income hospitals and protecting her community members from rival street gangs, shake downs from the Mob, and the authorities. Essie made it her job to keep lower income families from ending up on the streets by shaking down Mob banks and robbing other gangs. She did only of this merely to keep her people safe, and not one dollar of the money she stole went to her. What she did was all for the greater good of her people.

tab Essie's a hood-rat... Plain and simple it's only obvious that she would pick up the wisdom of the hood or rather the urban instinct to survive were most of the "animals" are greedy and in all honesty would probably kill you for your shoes. It's a hard knock life out in the ghetto and Essie is fully aware of the evil that is man and intends fully to understand it so she won't become a victim. Esperanza is pretty wise to "The Devil" she's less likely to make stupid decisions because of a pretty face or a tempting offer.

tab Essie is not exactly the person who will let anyone pay for her, if she can't afford it she won't go. She will rarely ever ask for help or feel the need for assistance which could be attributed to her strong-will, but she's not stubborn, if ever there is a situation that requires someone's help she'd never confuse vanity for independence. Her strong standing nature can sometimes be read as "Unapproachable" but that is not particularly true. Esperanza opens up to people slowly... But she's not against the idea of making friends or forming connections with people. If you become someone she really cares about, she'll do her best to protect you at any cost.

tab Despite a growing up in the hood Esperanza was always exceptionally bright and calculative. Essie often did what she had to do to raise money for her community which included selling drugs. When Esperanza made dope she often stayed clear of anything particularly dangerous or addictive, so in her short time out of high school she used her honors chemistry knowledge and hand-me-down apothecary knowledge to make research chems that sold quickly and often. She's also been in a lot of shoot outs had she not been fond of games of strategy or read books on tactical warfare, she probably wouldn't be alive today.

★)) Esperanza didn't have a great childhood, that much is clear. She grew up in a remote part of the Bronx that was very hostile. This area was in and out of control by all the street gangs the Bronx had to offer. This community was so hot, that the cops rarely ever answered calls from there. The community in which Esperanza lived was full of mostly undocumented citizens, which meant her and most of her neighbors were at risk of being deported, had anyone found out. How did this community of immigrants last so long? It had protectors, a group of women that wanted nothing more but to see their people safe and sound. This "gang" Las Catrinas, was lead by Maria Arroyo; Esperanza's mother. Maria had Essie at a young age and did the best she could to keep her out of Las Catrinas. She knew that her daughter looking up to her was all bad news. She couldn't have Esperanza joining her coven and being in danger, as she grew Maria was more and more aware of the the problem that Essie would face which was spending the rest of her childhood as an orphan.The coven, Las Catrinas, had already made some big moves on the rival street gangs even the Mafia, but there was one gang in particularly that wanted the Las Catrinas witches dead. The West Indie Kings, these rough riders from Queens showed a peculiar interest in the coven of witches. The kings themselves were rumored to use forms of dark magic, but Voodoo is what they were accused of practicing most often.
★)) One day in the winter Maria had gone missing. Essie Had stayed with her mother's sister witches and their daughters for nearly 3 weeks, until it was confirmed that she had been murdered by the West Indie Kings. Ten year old Esperanza learned how cruel life was that day. Eight years later Essie has graduated from high school at the top of her class, but has refused to let herself go to college until she's dealt with the organized crime in the Bronx. Against her mother's wishes she had joined the Bronx coven when she turned sixteen and was now the leader of Las Catrinas. Esperanza was playing a very dangerous game with her own life by running down the other street gangs. The Mafia, for their money. The Brotherhood, for their weapons. Essie had yet to go after the Kings, but by now everyone wanted Esperanza and her crew on ice. The Candy Skull and makeup resembling such became a target for any street gang punk. Esperanza was convinced she couldn't save her people without any supernatural help, so she began conjuring. she'd mix concoctions with a drop of her blood and spray protection circles all around her turf to hinder any threat that came their way.

★)) Esperanza's precautions were in vane. The more heated the skirmishes the higher the number of casualties. She had become desperate for a solution, or an answer or something to keep the unfriendlies out of the community, but nothing worked. By the climax of the gang wars Essie's coven was down to eight members including herself. In an attempt to strengthen her forces Esperanza did the unspeakable. She made a Faustian bargain with Mephistopheles a powerful and tricky demon. He told her that in exchange for her soul He would give her the ability to bring life to death and make her enemies suffer a terrible fate. He also mentioned that the contract would not be fulfilled until all of her enemies were slaughtered. Essie was then given the power of Necromancy. The Las Catrinas and Essie started collecting the recent of their dead and the enemy's then began sewing them together. These unholy abominations along with the rotting bodies of any man, woman, or child were commanded to to destroy these gangs under the cover of night. On that horrible night Essie managed to cripple the Mafia and completely topple the Brotherhood. Unfortunately this victory would be very short lived. The Mafia didn't take it too well. The Don paid off the West Indie Kings to put the Las Catrinas on ice, knowing that they're voodoo was more more powerful at full strength than the witches' magic at half. One night in the winter, Esperanza was reminded how cruel life was. Esperanza had been taken in her sleep and forced to watch the slaughter of her friends and her people, but not exactly because she was bound. Because she was the one killing them. Like a dream, she described it. The kings used a powerful concoction. A chemical powder that that turned her into a slave to their commands for a few hours. she was awake consciously, but she couldn't make her body stop. After that traumatizing night she was tried for first degree murder and sentenced to death. On the day of her injection she was told that she was being released somewhere to help her deal with her "Condition" and do to the unknown nature of her capabilities that she was unsafe to be in the state's custody. Esperanza is now being handed over to Arkwright University in order to fully assess her powers and magical ability. Essie lost everything, her home, her family, her friends, her people, despite how hard she worked to save everyone; She failed....
