✦ The son of a high-ranking politician within the Water clan, Claude comes from an esteemed family of river spirits who hold domain over a collection of small rivers. The Harpers originated from an icy climate, vengeful spirits trapped within the frozen ground until cracks formed in the earth and released them into the rivers that spilled out from under the ice. They laid claim to the formerly desolate frozen lands and rose in status to become minor deities, staking their power over the weaker nymphs and spirits. Due to Claude's father being an insatiable and ambitious man, Claude was raised in a strict, studious household, where he was expected to academically excel and outshine his peers in every respect. He was groomed to become someone worthy of joining the clan's army, as that was his family's goal for him. While his father pursued a political career and aimed for a position at the top, Claude went through rigorous training, refining his abilities in Human form and Serpent form; etiquette and lying and refinement became as natural as breathing as he became learned in the fine art of social niceties and image-making.
Everything he learned was to set him up for a life in political warfare. Though Claude's father desired his son to be his willing foot soldier, Claude refused. Instead of joining the army, Claude pursued an academic career. But his interest in war and military strategy stayed with him for the rest of his education, and continuing onto his career as an archivist. He never ventured far from his once-almost involvement in the army and became a consultant on battle tactics and military strategy. Claude's family was never consisted of outstanding warriors - not when comparing to the best of the best - but they knew how to win. Claude understood complex operations and had a sense for the whole battlefield; he knew how to play the long game in a war. In skill and mind, he was a laudable warrior. His contributions in the recent war were great - and so when the marriage treaty was enacted once more, Claude's name was passed forward, knowing that if anyone could make use of the chance presented, it would be Claude.
