Keanu pressed one hand against his head, feeling slightly dizzy. He could only hope, no, he could only dream, that he didn’t have the virus. Picking up a small cup full of water, he raised it to his lips and gulped it down. The liquid was cold, ice cold, but it felt like bliss to his dry throat.

Today had to be the worst day of his rapidly ending life. Slowly, he collapsed into a chair that was next to him. It was over. All over. Humanity was going to die out and he could do nothing to stop it. No one could. Why? A brand new virus struck all of a sudden. No one knew where it came from, or how it was transmitted. But everyone knew one thing–if you caught it, you were dead. There was no antidote, no medicine to cure it. If you got lucky, you’d be dead before morning.

Closing his eyes, he could feel a migraine coming on. Great. Perfect. What a lovely time to get the world’s biggest headache. It was no surprise that he was ill though, half of his colleagues at the lab had already gone, and the other half worked as if their lives depended on it, and in a way they did. This lab was the only one still bothering to try and find a cure, anything that would help. Everyone else had given up long ago and said their farewells to everything.

At least the lab had one lead, Keanu thought, trying to stay positive. It appeared that the virus didn’t affect tigers. Who would have known? Of course, genetic mutation was illegal, so that was out of the question. Not that his lab really cared about what was and wasn’t against the law anymore, but still. All they could do was analyze and hope. Hope for the virus to die out, hope for the end to come quickly, the hope varied from person to person.

As someone cleared their throat, Keanu raised his head, trying to stop a cough from working its way through his throat. A woman stood there, quite tall with light blonde hair and intelligent blue eyes. She looked at him sharply, noticing his pale features and the faint sheen of sweat that covered his brow.

“What is it, Iolana?” His voice was hoarse. Definitely sick. Keanu looked up at her, his eyes gentle. She was his head research scientist, and they’d been good friends since they were very little. He cared for her very much.

Biting her lip, she paused for a second. “I-I’m sorry.” Her expression was pained, she knew his fate was sealed. Taking a deep breath, she switched her gaze to look over his shoulder rather than at him. It would be so much easier to report things like that. “One of the scientists wanted to see you, he claims he might have found something of interest. He won’t talk to anyone but you about it.” She hesitated once more, “And we’ve managed to isolate the gene that prevents tigers from contracting the virus.”

Keanu jumped up as she said that. Relief washed over his gaze, if they could experiment further then maybe, just maybe, there was some hope. Even if he wasn’t saved, maybe others could be. As he noticed her expression, he stopped. Coughing lightly into his fist, he spoke. “Any luck with it?”

Tears welled in Iolana’s eyes. “I’m sorry. We can’t get it to bond to human DNA. The chemical formulas are all wrong and totally incompatible. We’ve been working on it for the past 24 hours with no luck.” Her voice cracked as she said, “The scientist is in Lab 102. I’m really sorry, Keanu.” With that, she quickly fled from the room, unable to face him any more.

With a groan, Keanu raised himself from his chair. At first, the world span slightly before him, until it seemed to right itself. Wiping his pale forehead, he began to walk outside and down towards Lab 102. It wasn’t too far away.

Soon enough, he reached the door and walked inside. One of his co-workers was in there, but he must have been new because Keanu didn’t recognize him. “You asked for me?” He said, leaning on the table while he fought to catch his breath back. Even the walk tired him out.

The scientist’s eyes blazed. In one hand, he held a small syringe. “Mr. Akana, I wish to share two pieces of news with you. The first is that I have found a strange sample of DNA, unlike any we have ever seen before. I should probably tell you about that later though.” He paused, smiling pleasantly, “And the second is that I may have found a way to fuse the tiger sample to human DNA.”

Keanu looked at him weakly, “Please, call me Keanu.” He listened in silence as the scientist explained his findings. He looked away slightly as the last part was announced. “None of my best staff could do it, what theory is it that you could possibly have?”

The scientist grinned, holding the syringe he had up in the air. “The single gene won’t fit because it is too different from the rest of the DNA, but if you combine the two a little more it flows a little smoother. I ran some tests and found that by inserting a few more genes, the DNA fused together quite nicely.”

Keanu’s head shot up, a dumbfounded look on his face. “Are... are you joking?” His eyes were wide, “Genetic mutation to that extent is illegal, but no one really cares about that anymore.” Taking a deep breath, he considered everything slowly. “What are the side effects?”

The scientist shrugged, “I haven’t been able to test it on a human, yet.” With that, he looked at Keanu pointedly. “Unless you have someone willing to try it out, I somehow doubt that I’ll ever get to test it.” The polite smile was still on his face, almost mocking.

Keanu stared at the scientist, his mind trying to comprehend what he was saying. As the big image struck his mind, he gasped. The sharp intake of breath resonated around the suddenly very silent lab. Slowly, his eyes traced from the scientist’s face to the small syringe he held in his hand, the needle glittering in the artificial light.

Without another word, Keanu strode up to him and snatched the syringe off him, finding a sudden reserve of energy. Not even hesitating for a second, he pressed the needle against his skin and slowly injected the fluid into his veins. It was cold, ice cold. He could feel it working its way through the blood, higher and higher, spreading through him.

“NO!” The scientist screamed, face frozen in horror. “That’s not the tiger sample!” He grabbed Keanu’s shoulders, shaking him slightly.

Keanu’s head began to spin. What was this? This wasn’t supposed to happen, was it? He heard a sudden screech and felt strong hands shaking his shoulders. With a sudden flash of understanding, he realized the fatal error he had made. Breath growing short, he felt a wave of darkness ready to crash over his mind. He struggled, trying to keep it at bay as his eyes slowly closed.

The wave crashed as Keanu’s body went limp.

Everything was spinning. He couldn’t make sense of where he was or what was gong on. Was this death? Why was it so weird? A familiar voice echoed just out of reach of his mind. Somehow, he felt he should know what it said, but nothing made any sense.

His eyes slowly flickered open. A few blurry shapes were in front of him, each a mixture of colours he couldn’t quite put together. A groan escaped his lips as reality sudden caught up to him. Everything snapped into focus before him, and each phrase suddenly made sense.

The scientist was there, a smug grin on his face. Odd. Last time Keanu had seem him he’d looked horrified. And next to him was the face which he’d thought he’d never see again, Iolana, smiling happily down at him. But... there was something different about both of them. It took him a few seconds to realize they both had tiger-like features, from the stripes upon their skin to the ears and tail that he could see.

The events before his apparent ‘death’ flooded back into him. “How am I still alive?” His voice sounded healthy and strong, another odd thing.

The scientist took a step towards him, “First things first, I never had a chance to introduce myself. I’m Ian Blackwell.” Keanu could do nothing but gape. That name was one of the best known ones in the entire world of science. “Stop with the awe and stuff, it gets tiring after a while. It’s much better when no one else knows who you are.” Ian paused for a second, “As for your question, remember that DNA sample I told you I had, that was quite odd?”

Keanu nodded, closing his mouth quickly. Ian carried on, “Well, it turns out that it belongs to a creature known as a ‘Kirin’. I’m sure you’ve heard of them, they’re mythological creatures. And as we know from the legends, they won’t die from illness.”

The smug grin came back onto Ian’s face as he saw Keanu’s brow furrow in thought. “So there are two types of DNA that are immune?” Suddenly, he paused. “What do I look like?”

Iolana smiled at him and held up a mirror, which Keanu looked into. He almost gasped again. He had odd ears, long and furry, and a horn stuck out of his forehead.

Suddenly, the enormity of what just happened struck him. This was it. Humanity had been saved.
