Stage one: fruit & sprout (appear together in the shop, but separated on the chart) -- one week
Stage two: bud -- two weeks
Stage three: blossom -- three weeks
Stage four: sapling

Saplings are very unique creatures, if you haven't already noticed! Each sapling is symbiotically bonded to a plant from birth. This is a purely biological process--nothing magical about it. The plant gains water and minerals from the animal; in return, the plants offers up sugars, energy, and some woody protection. Neither plant nor animal could survive on their own. Sapling plants do not have a root system, and sapling animals lack areas of their spine and skull where the plant protects them.

Sapling animal physiology is not prone to mutations. However, because of the variety of sapling plants, these may vary greatly. Common mutations include spikes or flowers.

Sapling diet varies from area to area. They are omnivorous, but may choose to eat mainly plants or animals based on environment or cultural norms. All saplings are also geophagous. This means they need to eat rocks, soil, or sand to get minerals in their diet.

Sapling breeding is still a very mysterious process. It is said that they can breed asexually, or even between two of the same gender, but cross-gendered breedings are the only ones that have been observed. It IS know that both a sapling and a non-symbiotic plant must be involved. These sacred plants, which are called by different names but most often as "Children Trees," begin to go to seed at certain times of year. The parents-to-be then contribute their own genetic material. Trees in different areas produce different kinds of seeds, and those seeds eventually sprout and grow into saplings. While the sprout is rooted, it is necessary for a guardian to watch over it, which is why paired saplings or saplings with family to help them will have more surviving offspring.

All sapling groups are rather unique in their ways of life. It is not uncommon to see younger adults traveling alone, but most saplings prefer to travel in groups. Wandering elders are commonly looked on with pity or fear.

Sapling groups come in all shapes and sizes. A family made up of a mated pair and their offspring may travel together, or several families and lones may travel together in a pack. These packs may be led democratically, by a single strong leader, or an inherited system. Some packs are strictly ranked; others are not.

There are few uniting customs among saplings. Groups have been known to have elaborate traditions and religions… or none at all. While some claim to be seers and magic-workers, they're mostly just cons. There is very little evidence for arcane influence on the islands.

Matings rituals are also varied. It is not uncommon for two saplings within a group to decide to raise children with no romantic attachment to each other. Other saplings are strictly life-mated. It is very rare for a lone parent to raise a seedling.

Saplings will commonly wear decorations made of natural materials. They may also create jewelry from things washed up on shore, such as plastic bags or bottle caps. Mutations such as wood spikes are viewed differently in each culture, too.

All saplings live on a set of four Pacific islands. They are large enough to sustain the entire population. The islands also have very varied ecosystems. The mountains are frigid; there are decidous and tropical forests, as well as long beaches, desert, and grassland. In fact, the only uninhabitable island is the south-eastern one. In the center is a large volcano, and the surrounding land is caked dirt and dry. The few plants that grow cannot support saplings. Some saplings do live on this island, but they are outcasts from their own societies.

There are no humans on these islands. Remember Dinotopia? Yeah. It's like that. However, some human remnants like trash or broken boats still wash ashore. Some Saplings may use these items as decorations.

Hey! These islands need names! Would you like to name the islands? Just message the mule with your four names. If I decide to use them, you'll win 10k gold!

How can I get a Sapling? It's pretty easy, really. Regular events will be announced in this thread. People may also rehome their pets or have give-aways for their sapling's offspring. Just keep lurking!

Keep these things in mind for events:

Flatsales Flatsales are 5k for adults and 7k for growings. Speed-based flats will be on a first-post, first-served basis. You may only try for one pet--no preference list. You may proxy for someone. If you proxy, you are allowed to try for your own pet; however, each request must be in a seperate post. You must also first post for the person you are proxying, and then for yourself. The staff member holding the flat should post any other information approximately five minutes before the flat is held. The flat continues until all pets have been claimed.

Flaffles Flaffles are a hybrid of a raffle and a flatsale. They are like a raffle in the sense that users claim tickets and give preference lists. They are like flatsales in the sense that they are held at a certain time, for a limited time. After time has run out, the tickets are tallied and a random number generator decides the winners. Prices are the same as flatsales.

Raffles Raffles are held for a certain period of time, longer than that for flaffles. They can be either paid raffles, in which a person may buy as many tickets as s/he likes, or free, in which each participant is generally rewarded one ticket. At the close of the raffle, tickets are tallied and the winners are chosen via a random number generator. Raffle pets have no cost outside that for tickets. If a winner did not post a preference list and does not within 24 hours after winning the pet, they will be bumped to the bottom of the list.

Auctions Auction pets are bid on in the thread. The starting bid, minimum bid increment, and high bid are decided by the event holder and posted in-thread. If a bid war occurs shortly before the auction is to close, there will always be a half-hour snipe guard in place. Proxies are allowed, but the gold must be delivered within twenty-four hours of the pet being won; otherwise, it will go to the next-highest bidder.

Contests Contests run in the thread for a certain amount of time. Entries are judged by the event holder based on the posted criteria. The event holder may choose other judges to assist. Contests may or may not have a fee. Contest entrants may not edit their entry or use material from the entries of others.

Games Games may be pre-planned or posted spontaneously in the thread. Game rules will be posted in the same way.

Breedings The owners of pets in breedings are strongly encouraged to give away the extra offspring if more than two are produced. These events may not bring any profit for the event holders. Beyond that, rules are decided by the parents' owners. These events are usually
held out of thread.

Customs Customs vary by colorist opening. Details can be found in Staff information.

On Roleplaying...
Saplings are definitely not RP-required and will grow regardless of participation from their owners. RP'd pets may receive perks such as edits or extra 'luck' in breedings. If an owner gives away bred offspring and requests that they be RP'd, the offspring may be rehomed if the new owner does not follow through. Pets that are left unclaimed for long periods of time may also be rehomed.

Fruit Festival

User ImageGood ol' Tomahawk thought it'd be fun to throw a fruit festival on the south-west island (because everyone knows those trees produce the best fruit, year-round.) He just didn't realize how much fruit saplings can eat! So now he's running back and forth into the forest, collecting food for his hungry guests. Oh, Tom. You're so silly.

Throughout the event, staff will be dropping off the below fruits in the thread. If you see that, you'd better rush yourself and your sapling to the guild RP thread to gobble it up before someone else does! (If you don't have a sapling, you can play as a forest creature who's crashing the party.) To claim a fruit, you must post in the RP thread with a short response of your sapling snacking at the party. You should put the image of the fruit you're claiming in your post, too. If there's no fruit available, you're still welcome to join the RP!

Blackberries are worth three points; cherries, two; and strawberries, one. The person with the most points at the end of the event wins one free semi-custom from Milorganite.

These rules are down here at the bottom because they're mostly common sense, but they're worth reading!

Drama. Please keep it out of this thread. Do not beg for pets or complain about your lack of having any. Do not argue about the fairness of event rules. Don't sit around being passive-aggressive or self-depreciating, because, at least from me, you will NOT receive a gentle snuggle or pat on the back. If any sort of drama DOES crop up in the thread, I would appreciate it if thread regulars make no response, including to call someone out. Allow staff to handle any situations.

Advertising. Please do not post ads here. This includes ads in your post style. Yes, having a small, right-aligned trailer that says "View my art shop!" is just as bad as having it normally in every one of your posts. Of course, if shops come up in conversation and yours is mentioned and asked about, I do not mind you posting a link. Also, if you are a thread regular and you are hosting an event of some kind, message the mule about it and we may work out some sort of ad you could post. Do not do this without permission.

Cheating. If you are found to cheat at any event, including using another person's material in a contest entry or using mules in some way, you will be disqualified from that event and your participation in future events may also be denied.

Stealing. Don't. Do it.
