User ImageWhat are your thoughts on using black? I've noticed a lot of artists don't like to use black which is incredibly unfortunate. Being a goth and always wearing black and wanting black things, it's sad to see ppl afraid to use it even when creating goth art.

What do you think about using black in art? Is it something you avoid? If so, why? Or are you like me and just do it anyways?

I'm doing a little research and I want to write a blog on the topic.

i def pref vibrant colourful art cuz it gives me dopamine, while dark and black pieces r sad and depressing for me

Kindly Prophet

in college i was taught that black not a real color. it is man made and does not exist in nature and therefore you should not use it. but i would make the exception if the piece request required it such as goth piece. gaia_pawstamp

I think the reason artists don't use black is because of colour theory.
Technically, true black (in most cases) doesn't exist IRL. To achieve black as a colour, you mix together mix blue, magenta, and yellow in equal parts.
Also, most black paints are poorly made and instantly muddy/desaturate a pallette. It's better to mix your own than use black paint.
I only use black as a last resort if I REALLY want something to stand out

Anxious Hobbyist

I've only seen people avoiding the color black when it comes to shading.

User ImageThat's honestly a bit redundant because it does appear in nature lol. I honestly hate the stigma against using black. I understand when ppl have a preference sure but when they say things like that, nah.

User ImageSaying it doesn't exist makes no sense to me. Another person said they were taught that "it doesn't appear in nature" which it does. Think about pupils. o___o

Ah for paints, I don't have much experience but when I did use black paint in the past, I had no issue with it and it seemed fine.

I enjoy using heavy saturated black and white within my art, it's my favorite time to use textures. I still make bright and colorful pieces of art as well, but sometimes the artwork just looks better in black and white. idk I like experimenting when it comes to my art
User ImageThat's awesome. Care to post some examples? I def don't often see just black and white art.

User ImageYeah fair. For me I just use different shades of black and it works out fine. That's def a common reason that ppl don't use it tho.

The idea is that even when something appears black, if you colour pick it in a photo it's always just a desaturated colour. True black is the complete absence of colour being reflected back from an object which doesn't exist in the real world. Just like white isn't a colour but the complete light spectrum mixed together. It's just a scentific definition that also applies to art as it means you achieve more natural lighting, instead of using 'fake black' paints.
The only item that gets close to that is Vantablack which is super cool if you wanna google and look at it. I don't understand it fully, either. I just know of it as I've been taught and did some independant research on it.
