The report log is backed up, in some cases, three to six months.

But it's a PUBLIC FORUM.
PUBLIC.
PUUUUBLIC.

The ability to look at post history can be very important.
For example, I own the Site Feedback regulars guild, and well, the userbase as a whole rule it. When someone requests to join, we vote on it. When someone wants another user to be let in, we vote on the possibility to be let in. So when someone wants to be let in, we look at their post history and decide whether they should get our vote based on etiquette, how regular they are, and other different things that vary from person to person.

If you want "privacy", then you might want to get off Gaia. It's open to people who aren't even signed in/up. Heck, you might want to get off the internet.

And besides, if you don't say anything wrong, you won't get banned for it. If you didn't flame someone, you won't get in trouble. Simple as that.

Agreed. This is exactly why I'll never support the idea of hiding our post histories. It's like expecting people in public to not hear to anything you say on a street corner.

Wild Bookworm

I'm between two minds on that. I have found post history useful at times , especially if I am suspicious of a trade or something - it can be some indication , as well as the profile , of who you might be dealing with , and it's not idle curiosity nor do I have any ulterior motive.

On the other hand , if I wished to change my name and "start afresh" , I would have to bump my way out of my post history to remove quotes with the old account name. All your own posts can be deleted by you , but not the quotes , obviously.

So I'm not sure which I would prefer.
This is a HORRIBLE Idea! No offense.

I agree with your reasons; they are quite good. However, getting rid of post history would be horrid. When I am about to accept a person into my RP, I check their posting history to make sure they are literate enough, and that their samples weren't stolen from somebody.

However, tell it to me straight - is it flaming when you call someone a hypocritical ******** when they're going on about how it's wrong to use hurtful insults and derogatory terms, and when you explain your view calmly, they turn around and call you a 'stupid b***h'?

Yes.

You never have to fight fire with fire. You may feel that it's your obligation to defend yourself, but a) there are ways to do so without flaming, and b) you can always report the violation and leave it alone. An insult is an insult, whether provoked or unprovoked.

And, in that vein, it doesn't matter how old a violation is. If it's a violation, it is our responsibility to inform (or, if you wish to use the term, warn) the user that they have violated the guidelines of this site. Yes, warnings are a form of punishment, but they also serve as a source of information. If we don't warn users that they've committed a violation, they can take it that their behavior is just fine and continue to make the same mistakes over and over again.

If you find it impossible to hit the delete key after you've typed out a response flinging insults at someone or bringing someone's parenting into question, then that is your irresponsibility.
I don't like how others can see my post history, because that's how most scammers find their prey (from posts in the exchange forum). But I still use the post history to check on people who are requesting to be my friends.

There is a limit on your post history, based on number of posts rather than the passage of time. I usually post around an amount that sets my post history limit at about two months ago. Posting more often will shorten the limit.

Heh… I tend to have 2 weeks in my post history… stare

But, not everyone posts nearly as much as I do… Another compromise I've thought of may be X pages, rather than X time period. Again, with a minimum value of 1. (0 would mean "unlimited", or "same as now", of course!)

Also, I want to point out that there are ways to search post histories besides the "official" Gaia method. There's nothing wrong with it, and it has its own flaws. But it also has no limits… If it's publicly on the site, it will be returned… (No details to prevent abuse!)
I agree!
I mean we have a choice for users to see our friendslists, it should be the same for everything else!
Why don't moderators just make a set rule, such as you can only report a post a month after it was posted? confused

Because then people would be able to get away with things, especially in fast moving thread.

Yeah, I guess thats true.

I still say flaming is flaming, and if you do it, expect to be caught, no matter how long after it is.

Public enough to have private guilds and messages AND profiles? Don't even start with this one.

People don't just report from post stalking. They use it to harass users for donations, to get dirt, etc etc. I've had in the past a few times where people bitched about how I wasn't really poor enough to not give them donations. All because they went to an exchange thread I'd made a two weeks ago selling an item.

Again, I know there are cons and pros to this. But it does need some improvements.

I said... Public forum? O.o;;
The forums are public.
The private guilds don't show up in your post history.
Nor do private messages. |:
They're private; the forum is public.
Hard to comprehend?

If someone is harassing you, report them. Don't make the rest of Gaia suffer because people have asked you for things; report them and move on.

Simple.
well if someone murdered someone else (IRL) and didn't get caught for a few months. and then someone reported the murderer, even though it was a few months later the murderer still will be punished for the action done.

it's similar to how gaia works~ reporting a post that leads to giving warnings is to stop that user from doing it again. so it's more than just having that post deleted.

Agreed, the FORUMS are public. However, why should my POST HISTORY be? Didn't answer to the profile thing. No, I understand what you are saying though. Believe it or not, you can tell when someone is posting in a guild even if it doesn't show in their history. Lolz at post counts.

Hiding my post history isn't making anyone suffer. I wouldn't have to use a mule for things such as the exchange, LI section, so forth. Lulz @ reporting. As if that works quickly anymore.
