I HAVE A QUESTION!

• How do you know where to place things such as hair strands, clothing folds, etc? It's near impossible to find reference images with the exact style of clothing/hair in the same pose you are doing, so how do you make it look good without having a picture to work from?
  
  Example: I recently drew the hair/tail on this animal base for another website, and received a critique that it was too "stiff" looking.
