Mine's mostly self study. I work as a multimedia developer (web design, video-editing not production, graphics, corporate branding, stuff like that) so I wasn't able to focus on figure drawings because I was mostly doing other stuff.

I wasted a good 3 years of spare time to actually practice drawing. emo

Yup. Mutli-media pays well, though. Ad companies pay well in general, so I wouldn't consider it that much of a waste ;D

I was thinking of making my mentor tag "so pro" but that would seem really arrogant to people who didn't know that I was pro by the dictionary definition of "being paid to do it" LOL.

Lot of peopel who are students (and just people who think they are good, but really can't draw well worth a damn) call themselves pro anyway, hahaha.

But even within professionals, there are certainly different tiers - I am not anywhere near the top yet, which is why I take classes. I'm pretty competitive.

Yes, you should. It's really easy to get wrapped up in a drawing, so you want to stop back every so often if it's a piece you care about.

There are steps you can do, though, to make it less arduous. For example - thumbnailing, especially value thumbnailing - will let you get the composition down. So that when you actually paint, you don't go into it, work for ten hours, come back, and realize your entire composition's been off from the core.

If a piece is important to me (ie - not a con print, headshot, or a character-only commission), I thumbnail out the anatomy, the composition, and value, before I get started. Then I'll do an initial sketch. I'll also double-check my sketch in PS with flip horizontal. Then I'll move to the refined version.

The thumbnail process can take as long as trying to go into something right off the bat, but I find the results to generally be better.

In an IT company having a multimedia unit is not as prioritized as the software development unit, so I wouldn't boast about having a good pay. Enough maybe, but nowhere near probably on mainstream multimedia companies. D:

One thing I'm proud of though is I was given that opportunity to carve the path and I hope my subordinate will be able to sustain it. D:

You're a pro for me in terms of having that job, practicing it and having technical knowledge to actually explain to me, a student. I guess some people take criticisms offensive enough to make them depressed or feel like they're being condemned for making mistakes.

And thank you for the advice. smile I should try thumbnailing too. I did it before but didn't fully grasp its concept and importance. At least I'm on the right track.XD

NEW FEATURE!!

Hey everyone!
I'll be migrating our Project Archive to HERE within the next few days. There were several reasons for this move:

- This will really live up to our motto of visual learning!
- This feature will make it quick and easy for the mentors to upload their learning materials for the students and so, everything will always be up to date.
- It will also be less work for me for periods when I am busy irl or when I can't make it to a computer.
- Mentors can also select better tags as they see fit, AND as many as they want without cramming everything into a post like what we're doing now. XD
- Students can more easily search the tags they want (and by mentor name or their own name) and browse through our archive for tips and tricks or find their own requests (as long as Tumblr is not being a poophead =v=;d).
- Essentially, I am trying to save everyone's time. @u@d ...and actually put my coding skills to use lmao
- It also looks cooler lol

Mentors, if you approve of this idea, I will go through with it immediately. If not, let me know and we can keep our current Project Archive as it is. :> When posting your redlines/livestreams/advice in the future, please follow the format of the examples I will be posting within the next few days using the materials we currently have (pay particular attention to tags). The only difference for the future is that you will not need to post your own names in the posts, I am just doing it for the first few examples to give credit where it is due. <3
EDIT: Note that you will still have to quote your students to let them know when you finish their request, but basically, anything that you were planning to place in the post may be placed in the new archive above. 8D

I will be inviting the mentors to become site authors soon, so if you know that I do not have your email as a form of off-gaia contact, please send me it. (:
