Great thread!

Adding onto the discussion about the saucers.
The problem that I see with guinea pigs using them is that unlike chinnies when running the back feet don't move close to the front. I hope you guys are getting what I'm saying. Piggies have very short legs and they don't have the hound type of run.

I'm really bad at explaining things like this, but I hope you guys got what I was trying to say.
it's also their vision.

guinea pigs have wide peripheral vision and not so great head on vision and at judging distances and height so they have to turn their heads slightly to either side to get a good view of what they are looking at. its the position of their eyes in their head that makes them have bad depth perception

ive heard stories of guinea pigs on both types of wheels while doing this and it throws off their balance entirely and they end up injuring themselves that way as well

so theres 2 reasons not to use wheels. 1 for the sake of their fragile backs and 2 due to the high likelyhood of them falling or getting flung off in a way that can hurt them

Our vet told us that our guinea pigs need vitamin C supplements next to their normal food (their normal food is: pellets, a lot of hay and vegetables and fruits, the vet told us that this is the right food xD, but we already knew that.) c:

We built a house like this for our pigges: User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Not exactly the same, but something similar. Quite proud of it xD

It is quite easy to make yourself ;O My mom made one herself, out of an old closet xD
I will make a closet like that but for rabbits. It will be different, because rabbits are different xD
I wish I could find some shelves or something for my pigs, or even for the mice I'm planning to get (I have to research then talk it over with the family, who will most likely reject the idea of bringing mice into the home). But there's nothing I can use.
Damn family and their de-cluttering

yup! rabbits need a bit more hopping space 3nodding

hmm, i'm thinking of making a ground type hutch for my guineas to get some outside air during the summer and then make one of those closet thingies for the winter and to keep them in most of the time

Indeed. And rabbits also can hop higher, so the plastic things don't keep them in xD

D': I miss my piggly-wigglies

I grew up with these adorable little animals. They're so unique, and smart too (despite the credit they are given.)

All of mine had different personalities. We always had the same cage, which wasn't very big, maybe medium sized. Enough for 3 or 4 to sleep in. And we would always have the cage open while we were at home so they could run around with our dogs.

Mindy, our little yorkie-poo would baby them, and she was alpha so the other dogs wouldn't mess with her piggies. Wendy, our bigger dog who was evidently raised to hunt and kill cats/rodents (she's super-sweet, and we've only had one incident with a stray. She was abused before we got her, a junk-yard dog) would always sneak in their cage and kiss them....and then steal their carrots, but still.

We had a Guinea Pig names Baby that like to watch TV. Particularly westerns, with cowboys and the like. He was really smart, and I kid you not, figured out the remote controlled the television and would sit on our couch bouncing up and down on them. He would go nuts if you changed the channel. He was soo weird and adorable.

Lindsey, our last guinea pig, lived for 9 years, and she thought she was a dog. Just like her "mom" (our yorkie-poo) she lived for a very long time and always acted as if she was eternally young. I miss them!!!!

Sorry for the wall of text.

Firstly, THANK YOU for making this informative, helpful thread!

I have kept guinea pigs for just over 10 years, and I admit that part of me cringed a little before I clicked on this thread, expecting misinformation and common misconceptions.
But this thread is great! Accurate information and dispelling myths, especially with regards to appropriate cage size (which is something that really pisses me off).

Anyway, I'd better introduce my boys. They currently live with my brother, as we've moved into a rented house and our landlord doesn't allow pets, and our new place isn't big enough to keep guinea pigs indoors in our giant home-made cage.

The Professor (recently died, he had always been sickly and was quite old when we got him, finally had to be put to sleep due to a tumour in his throat):

I miss them, but at least I still get to see them a lot when I visit my brother. smile

And again, to echo what you said in the OP, all 4 boys lived harmoniously together in one cage for more than 2 years, even though they did not live together since infancy and were all introduced to the group at different times and ages.
I am convinced the key was proper introductory periods, and having a big enough cage to get some alone time from each other.
