Mecha. Also called mobile suits, mobile armor, walking tanks, or even "That damned walking gun", since their creation and deployment by the United States in 2037, have represented the greatest combat machine since the dawn of warfare. They have replaced tanks as the biggest and baddest thing that can be thrown at an enemy. And in the current world, they represent not only power, but wealth, rank, and reputation.
It all started around the beginning of 2061. The United States had achieved its longtime goal of becoming the planet's only hyperpower, with influence and control stemming into every country and corner of the globe. Even China, India, and the EU were struggling to both keep up economically, and militaristically. Tensions were also flaring up, as both Russia and China were producing Mechs at an alarming rate. The US, while housing the most advanced Mechs, was growing concerned at its ability to keep its spheres of influence under control. It was then, that Nature struck out at humanity.
A cold, bitter winter marked the beginning of the next Ice Age, as the arctic decended upon North America, and the upper portion of Asia and Europe. It took less than two years to engulf all of Canada, and the top 20% of the US. France, Germany, Britian, and all of the northern EU nations were caught in ice as well. In these frigid climates, WWIII broke loose.
Russia invaded China to gain more habitable land, while Japan thurst at Australia. The United States moved South, taking over Mexico and Central America. The EU, acting as a whole unit, stormed into Africa. America and the EU also deployed to Australia, while Russia also sent in units to take over whatever it capture in frozen North America. China attempted to fight for its own land, while dispatching forces to bring India under its control. America, which was now centered in the area formerly known as Mexico, pressed against Russia to retake control of the technologically-rich Canada area. And while all this action was going on, valuable men, women, and Mecha were lost.
War raged on for another three years, before all parties grew weary and wore out their resources. A stalemate ensued, with each group concentrating on holding to its own territory, instead of actively attempting to gain more. In this hostile environment, many soldiers and citizens grew tired of fighting only for glory- Each faction held enough land to get it through the Ice Age. Those that sufficiently grew tired left rank to fight as Soldiers of Fortune, Mecha pilots who preformed missions for the factions, for a hefty sum of course. Many pilots died after only a few sorties, but those who survived began to develop an aura around them. Eventually, lone pilots would group up to form Coalitions, where several pilots would cooperate with each other consistantly for mutual benefit. A Coalition can be as loosely or tightly knit as its members want it to be.
