There's been some unfortunate issues with trading and how items went missing after trades are completed or cancelled. For those who had encountered this problem, please reply to the thread below:

Report your problem here.

There's no need to include any details, just reply to the thread and let us know the time in which the items were lost and that's all we would need.

We'll try our best to revive any lost items. Thank you for your patience.

Finally the database had moved to its new structure and looks like the hardwork we did installing all the new database code is finally starting to pay off. Throughout the day I'll be monitoring the performance of the database to make sure that there are no lag.

Many people's items have been recovered using the automated script (sorry for the lost items such as the olympic shirts earlier). More work will be done and for those who still have items missing, please report to Aerion's support thread.

The problem related to missing item from opening letters or boxes is completely fixed now. The item trading problem is also resolved. The problems are happening because of bugs in the actual web server or commpiler, so there might still be errors when trading or opening items, though now the items will not end up missing.

The server software will stablize once the top priority bugs and database enhancements are dealt with. Meanwhile, I'm working on the item recovery script to hopefully recover all the items that were lost from trading.

It's unfortunate that the instability of the servers had caused these problems, but on the other hand it let us enhance the code so that there won't be item loss in the future due to problems that are not caused by our own bugs. whee

The missing posts from the olympics event and most of the first annual Gaia ball will be recovered soon. Later on, the archived threads will provide the last post information so that they will be sorted properly. 3nodding

We've seen the turmoil of the Q&F and we hear your cries.

[UPDATE] - I have confirmation from L0cke, ALL items lost during these events WILL be retuned. ^_^ Thank you for being so patient during this

As of right now, there has been no confirmation, or delial of a Rollback, the admins have not made an official announcement about such a thing, therefor please don't jump to conclusions. and if a rollback did indeed happen, it was most likely unintentional, so don't go blaming Lanzer wink

for the time being, we ask that you please have patience while this matter is sorted out. we understand that you are upset you have lost items due to this occurance, but I assure you the admins are Probably working on it.

As of right now, please do NOT trade any of the items you have received as a result of this event, as well, it is inadvisable that you use the Bank or the gaian marketplace at this time. 3nodding

So please be patient while this is all sorted out. I'm sure everything will right itself out in time.

This is not a sticky, because we already have too many. I've also added this information to the existing ones, so please keep this bumped if possible! 3nodding

GaiaOnline is currently experiencing inventory issues!

Everyone and their grandmother seems to have noticed this; however, the issue is NOT BECAUSE OF A ROLLBACK.

The issue is, that in liu of the problems on Friday with the bank devouring items and random other explosions (see my announcement at the top of the forum) the admins had formulated a script that would have fixed the problems, avoiding rolling back the Gaia Servers entirely.
Unfortunately, the plan sort of backfired and didn't work out how they had planned. As in all things, nothing ever works how it should the first time. ^^;

The admins and staff are currently working their hardest to remedy any further issues and inventory problems.

Please have patience folks, things will be fixed. 3nodding

In recent days, many of us have seen, or even worse, suffered the results of some inventory malfunctions that have paradoxically caused items to disappear for some gaians or duplicate for others.

In forums like Q&F, the threads start pouring as too many desperate and confused Gaians want to get some answers or vent their anger and frustration.

It is right then and there, in the moment of trouble, when some people really prove to be capable of solidarity, while others seem to be utterly indifferent and hurtful.

When someone has lost their items, due to hackings, system malfunctions or any other reason, it is absolutely normal that this person will be upset.

Think for a moment, if you click on your inventory right now, and half of it is gone, particularly the half that was more important to you, would you be smiling and saying "Well... I'll save for another year and a half, it's all good."?

Having said that, refrain yourself from reciting the TOS and try to have some sympathy. How about saying "I'm truly sorry." Instead of going on and on about things that would mean squat to you, if you were the one in distress??

Get over it, it's just pixels damn it stressed
No Gaian that spends his or her time in this community, should ever see these words coming out of their keyboards.
I have news for you: It's not just pixels, damn it.
You and I do not come here and spend countless hours in front of a computer, developing relationships, exchanging ideas, building our avatar to the best of our capacity, to simplify every problem saying that "it's just pixels".
Gaia is people, it's time and it's effort. The pixels are just the part that you are able to see.

That phrase is probably one of the most hypocritical ones because what it really means is: "It's just your items, not my problem, stop whining... now if it were my items lost that would be completely different."

If it were just pixels, and they didn't matter that much, why don't we all just parade around in our skivvies and give our items away? stare

Stop saying that sad cliche phrase, it just makes no sense within our context.

You are not the only one!
When someone, sad and frustrated makes a thread to say he/she is missing some items, that is what the thread is about: his/her loss.

Yes, there are others that may have similar problems, but that doesn't entitle people to use this argument as a "shut-up-and-move-on" antidote for disgrace.

There is nothing more impersonal, than having a personal misfortune being treated like just one more. This is plain indifference, and it just makes people feel more hurt and alienated.

If you feel compelled to say "you are not the only one" do it constructively. Use this argument in a more understanding way and contribute to bringing peace amidst chaos: "I am sure this problem will be solved soon, since there are so many people who are going through the same situation right now. Don't worry, it will be fixed."

The little speech that becomes meaningless
Some words, out of using them too frequently loose their effectivity. How many times have you heard this little speech?

Gaia is free, stop complaining. If you don't like it, leave. The TOS says that Gaia is not responsible for lost items... blah,blah,blah.

Now, think, how many times have that little mantra accomplished anything?
If right at this moment, you discovered that all you pixels are gone from your profile, would that little speech prevent you from making a thread to get help, would it make you feel less worried?

Probably, even in the worst-case scenario, where you can't get back a single one of them, if you found people who were supportive and make you feel like you are not alone in this, you would feel a bit better.

So, then what? xp
It takes effort, but why not try solidarity for a change?
If someone is in distress, sad or just plain angry because of inventory trouble, you may feel the urge to explain the TOS, and many other arguments, but don't.

Your arguments may be right, but that doesn't necessarily help the person. Maybe all he or she needs is to vent. It's only human to feel angry and frustrated, particularly when a person feels she/he has been wronged.
Just imagine it is you who lost your something valuable, and if you can't imagine that, just try to say nothing.

Sometimes, a word of kindness can make someone feel reassured, and make a difference in their mood and attitude.

A community is about individuals caring for one another, and many times some gaians just don't live up to a community's expectations, when they are too self-absorbed. We need to be more understanding and compassionate towards people who are going through a hard time.

The next one could be you.

I noticed after leaving Gaia open on the main page for a bit (went to watch a bit o' TV) that I came back only to notice some weird Spyware on my computer. It doesn't cause many problems, but I still ahve yet to find where it's coming from.

Now, I'm a fairly secure person when it comes to internet crap, so I don't believe this would have come from other sites (yet I won't rule it out as a possibility.)

Has anyone else had a problem like this? It's rather annoying to know a forum I frequent often would be giving me Spyware when my fiancee and I donate around $50 a month now... :\

Dear ???????:

I'm sorry to hear about your spyware problems. My suggestion to you at this point is to install the latest windows upgrade, including updates for Internet Explorer, then run a spyware detector once again.

As far as the banner affiliates on Gaia, the provider is providing us with banner ads with the gaurantee that they won't install spyware on anyone's computers. We have faith in their words and none of us had received any spyware from the banners.

Gaia have a daily user count of at least 100,000 users, if our affiates install spyware, that would make an extremely large amount of upset users. As there is a hand full of Gaians who are experiencing spyware problems, it's my suspision that the problem might have came from other sources, from other web sites, worms, trojans or viruses.

As for donators being able to turn off banner ads, yes that feature will be available real soon. After the item recovery scripts are done it'll be one of the high priority features.

Heh! yeah.. A LONG time. But I don't take it for granted. And memories? I remember the chat, you know? There were 8-20 of us in there talking and rambling on about the items. And I remember when we though 3K made us rich.. blaugh !! But most of all I remembed how close all of us were because there were so few of us. No one was ever alienated or considerd 'new' because at the time we were all new.. Personally, it's not much like a community to me anymore but it still is, in an odd way. Not as much as I would want it to be.. ._.;

I'de have to say the Halo. I'm borrowing someones right now, I wont say her name because I dont know if she wants me to, but i'm borrowing it because I wanted to wear it and look cute and innocent--far from what I really am. But I just don;t like the halo that much because so many people want it--so many people will do anything for it. And it's really annoying--i'll wear it and people will just randomly IM me on AIM and PM me on Gaia--I mean, that happens with other items too. But with the Halo everyone automatically think's that you're rich or something. I have things that make me look rich but in all reality my gold is like...BLAH. blaugh

Arwen: Where do you usually hang out nowadays? (forums)

Oh oh! Lotto/games! I run the FFW thread {16500+ pages! whee }!! Giving away fairys on a montly basis at random.. blaugh I also hang out in...the COnvention thread because I will be attending Otakon 2005! ^O^ And Q&F. Some of my information is lost but I try to keep the random rude comments on the down-low. mad But all in all I just kind of...FLOAT around..

Arwen: Do you miss the old Gaia? Where the number of users were 300+ and only 300 are online at times.

Yes yes yes! I mean, not to be mean to anyone. Gaia is for everyone but it's just so big and everyone has problems and it stresses the mods and admins out! It's so...it hurts me to see how they are treated sometims.. I also miss it because like I said earlier, it was more like a community, everyone knew everyone and it was so much easier for us all. Now there are so many people.. And I may use the Gaian Exchange but I kind of hate it because so many useres on Gaia have mules to make more gold off of the charity. It's disgusting. I'm not 100% sure but I am pretty sure that if the GE came out and there were only about 300+ on it wouldnt be the way it is now. And I do know that if it wasnt for the users of Gaia, it might be gone because of the $$ it costs to run. 3nodding

Arwen: If you can have one wish here on Gaia, what would it be and why?

To all readers of the Gaia Times,

The Gaia Times Newspaper will be taking a well-deserved break from Gaia Online. I ask that all those who are going to submit Advertisements to me to please hold them off. You can submit your advertisements after September 24, 2004. Any advertisements submitted before September 24th will be deleted. So I ask everyone to please hold them off for now. You can start submitted them again AFTER September 24th.

Right now I'm very busy in real life and being a Moderator has really stressed me out. (I encounter lots of angry users, mass loads of PMs, and threads) So I ask you to NOT submit them to me.

What are Gaia Journals?
Gaia Journals are designed for you to have your very own personal space on Gaia to write out your thoughts. Your Gaia Journal is your space, so you choose what it looks like, who can read it, and who can comment on whatever you decide to share. You can have a journal just for you and your friends to read and comment in, a public space that the entire Gaia community can view and respond to, or you could even use your Gaia Journal to keep a private diary all for yourself, that no one else can read. You could even replace your LiveJournal, Xanga, or other weblog with your Gaia Journal. It's all up to you!

What do I need to know to get around Gaia Journals?
A good place to start is with the Journal Listing button. Clicking this will take you to a list of all the journals made by other Gaians. All journal lists are given in order from most to least active, so those most recently updated will be right at the top. No need to hunt around to see if someone's updated! To read a journal, just click on its title. If you'd like to view several journals at once, mark the boxes next to them and hit the 'view marked journals' button to read them all on one easy page.

Since there will be lots of journals, you might want to sort them into a form that's a bit easier for you to find things. For starters, Gaia Journal already works along with your Friendslist! All your friend's journals are in a nice list you can see by clicking on the friendslist link. So if you're not using your Friendslist yet, now's a good time to start!

If you come across a journal you'd like to keep track of while browsing Gaia Journal, you can just click the 'subscribe' button at the top of that journal. Then when you come back later, just go to Journal Listing and click on 'subscriptions'. There you'll have a list of all the journals you've subscribed to. Don't worry about subscribing, because if you change your mind later, you can always edit your subscriptions later. Now you know how to find and keep track of other Gaian's journals so you can begin to read and comment in them.

"Autosend" PM's
An "Autosend" PM is an automated message from Gaia. Examples are the PM from admin when something is sold in the marketplace, or the automatic message that comes when a moderator moves a thread.
These messages from Gaia cause your PM's to behave odd. Symptoms are seeing the PM bubble, but when going to your Inbox, nothing shows. Occasionally will cause forums to act odd also.

This allows you to Subscribe to threads that you are taking part in, and list them all in one place to make it easier to see if they have gotten updated. Tired of browsing through pages and pages of threads, only to find out that the thread you wanted to see hasn't even been updated? Be tired no more.

Subnavigation - has been changed slightly in a few places, and should work a bit better. thread subscription will show in all forum-like places, and the profile / journal / friendslist *should* show in said areas.

( oh. and memberlist finally got it's look & feel updated! yay! biggrin )

cheese_archive database is not a happy database today gonk It is not working. When you encounter that (mainly in the bank) there is nothing that can be done. Please try again later!

Problems with PM's!

Sometimes when you look in your inbox, it is suddenly showing things that were in there days ago! It is believed that a single server is experiencing lag, however with the load balancer in use, we can't tell which it is. Sasha, Rufus and Reinhart are three servers that are working fine. Please try them.

Also, it seems as if the problem where the links were set to http://www.gaiaonline.com/profile/ is still there on some servers.
Try to use the User Image

button instead.

How many times have you seen cybering threads in Gaia? And, how many of those times have you reported any of these threads?

Lately, the trend of creating cybering threads is becoming increasingly popular among the people who frequent forums such as The Chatterbox. At any given moment, you can browse through page 1 and see a number of threads where people are freely cybering and posting pictures of their breasts and genitals.

New users see so many of these threads, they think that's the easy, fast way of becoming popular and making friends.
The other users, the oldbies, who supposedly know better are either indifferent or giving in to the temptation and joining the cybering masses.

If you are in either group. Think again.
Regardless of what your feelings about porn and cybering are, Gaia is not the place for random strangers to have orgies. When we all signed up for Gaia, we agreed to a PG-13 code of conduct. Yes, PG-13 can be fuzzy at times, but for certain explicit sexual acts and images do not follow under that category.

So, if you're into cybering, you can do it in a million other internet places. If you are not, just looking (away?) is not the way out. Report these threads, and hopefully the people who create them time and time again, will eventually get discouraged.
Also, maybe the moderators will enforce more strict disciplinary action and we will have a cleaner Gaia. That's what you signed up for. It's time that you do a little work to get it.

Updates and progress...
Avatar rewrite continues...

Pretty much just finished updating all of the older clothing items and now moving onto the latest items from the recent item updates. Once all of that is done, have to figure out how to make all of the "special" items such as the sashes and the more unique items work with the new layering system.

Oh and the hairs... need to be redone. One problem we've had with the old hairstyles is that the process we use to "mask" out the hair when you wear certain hats adhere to an older masking system that was dependant on a specific set of hairstyles. Basically, the new process will be a more universal approach that will work with any new hairstyle we add and it'll even fix the "knock off the back of my hair" glitch when wearing hats. So, what this means is more reworking of older items to fit the new system. crying

Fishing is moving along pretty smoothly, there are still some left over graphics that need to be created which I overlooked in the rush of things. I never realized how many little tiny graphics needed to be created for a game. I think these types of graphics tend to be taken for granted(underappreciated), but they play a necessary role in all games. sweatdrop

After this stuff, Halloween is upon us. L0cke and I are hard at work on making some cool graphics for Halloween. Kekeke... without giving too much away, Halloween is gonna be a fun, frantic time for everyone. wink

Anyways, that sums up this update... I'll keep you guys posted as things develop. domokun

Finally got a chance to round up the winners of the Art Arena's Vampire Hunter D contest. Also finalized on the Halloween event today. As we have more resources to make a better event this year things will be a lot more fun. whee

There were a number of database related fixes made last week, users might have noticed the post count is working again, as things like the archiving script is once again working in the background.

Right now the spotlight is focused on Gaia Fishing, still tweaking the gameplay and values of every item. Can't wait!

How to header!
It's come to my attention that some users don't know how to put a nifty picture in the header of their journal. All you have to do is first go to the 'Preferences' page, and look for the 'Journal Header' field. Next, click on the '[help]' link and copy the following:

then click on '[help]' again paste what you just copied into the field. Now you can customize your header image by just replacing kaia_header.gif with whatever image URL you want (keep them in good taste and within ToS standards, of course). And then click on 'Save Preferences' and ya got it. whee

I'm hard at work on getting Avatar Rewrite done and next thing you know, screens get leaked... stressed

I've read some of the comments and there seems to be many misconceptions about the new Avatar system... so let me clear things up for you guys. sweatdrop

New poses will be CHOOSEABLE. This means you can pose your avatar with any of the new armposes that we're adding. Posing will work(once I'm done redoing all the graphics) with ALL of your old items. ALL OF THEM. This is why Avatar Rewrite is so frustrating, because it is my job to ensure that EVERY item works correctly how it's supposed to in EVERY pose and with EVERY possible combination. With the new system, you'll be able to wear way more combinations of clothing than you ever could before. Ever wanted to wear a cape over a coat over a shirt? You will be able to.

We've been working on this for a long time, and we feel the set of poses we've chosen can best accomodate all of the neat things we have planned for stuff like Battle system, Fishing and other games, as well as your every day stuff like instruments and whatnot. domokun

Think some of the stuff you've seen look weird? Just imagine them with all of the cool stuff you will be able to hold in them. wink

Now, to dispel some rumors...

1) You will NOT lose your existing pose because of the new system. If you want to pose them that way, it's your choice. You want to use a new pose, go for it. It's all UP TO YOU. Your avatar can look just like it does now til the end of time. 3nodding

2) The Avatar System release does NOT mean that Battle System is ready. In fact, the Battle System is still in the planning phase. Sure, we've created the character designs for a lot of it(some of that was planned when we first started Gaia), but at this point, we're still in the planning stages so please don't jump the gun and assume weapons will be here so quick. When they come, it will be a glorious day for all of us, admins & mods included. 3nodding

3) It will not cost you anything to change your pose. Click, choose, save changes.

4) You will NOT have to delete your avatar to change poses.

Hello everyone:

I would like to take a minute to announce Jakobo as Gaia's latest administrator. Jakobo had been an active member of the anime community as a staff member for many conventions around the west coast, and this year Jakobo had been helping Gaia with organizing our panels at Fanime and Anime Expo. Since then Jakobo had been an active moderator in our community as well as a developer.

From this day forward Jakobo is now one of Gaia's official software developer, focusing mainly on community features such as the upcoming moderator control panel, password recovery system, new user tutorials and anything we can think of that will make everyone's work a lot easier as a moderator. whee

At the same time, Jakobo will be working closely with other administrators to determine the future direction of the Gaia community. From rules and guidelines to community culture, we'll be counting on Jakobo's great insights to help lead Gaia in becoming the best community to be around.

When surfing Gaia, you may be presented with a white screen that has nothing else on it. Simply refreshing will cure this. It seems to be connected to certain servers in the Gaia cluster.

Ghost PMs? (15Oct2004)

Some users have reported opening their inbox only to discover they have "new" messages they deleted days ago. This could be caused by several things, ranging from a cached page to the server itself being out of sync. This problem should fix itself over time.

New Day, New Hires...

Things are proceeding according to plan. The lead architect informs me that the facility is roughly 90% complete. He assures me that it will be fully operational in 14 days. I gave him 7. I LOVE doing that. It's just like on an episode of Star Trek TNG when Picard would ask Geordi to do something, and then Geordi would tell Picard an arbitrary number of time, and then Picard would tell him to do it in half the time. That Picard was a smart one. It just goes to show that employees always give their bosses BS timeframes. You work in this business long enough and you learn these things. Take it from me.

Speaking of lousy employees. I've just had another series of hires at the facility. Hopefully, these guys will be fare more successful than the last batch.

I've a few business meetings to attend to at the Durem Reclamation Facility today. Apparently, some of the water samples and specimens taken from there will help with forward the research going on in my secret test facility underneath my mansion.

I can't wait to see what results will come of it. I can feel my grin growing even wider. twisted

starting today, Gaia will be showing you a whole new look for the Gaia World.

well, dusk, dawn, and night - to be exact. and... just so that you don't have to be online at midnight pacific standard time just to see what it looks like at night, we're instituting GST or... Gaia Standard Time.

GST works like this: there are two gaia days to each day in RealLifeTM. it will be midnight on gaia at 12:00am (PST) and 12:00pm (PST). if you connect to gaia from another timezone, you will still see GST based on PST.

GST gives Gaia more of a real-world feel, and in the very near future, as we add features to the site, there will be many features that interact with the GST system. For now, enjoy the new look, and...

...you'll see why really soon...

HOOPLA and All that Jazz...

OH HO HO HO... it seems that LabTech013's antics have raised a stink in the Gaian public.

Let me reassure all Gaians that there is nothing fishy going on underneath my mansion. First of all, LabTech013 isn't really even a LabTech. He is/was one of my construction workers. He is/was such a drama queen. By secret underground test facility, I simply meant new swimming pool/jacuzzi combo. You see, my son Gino's birthday is coming up on October 31st and he wants to invite all of his friends over to the mansion to hang out. I, being the gracious father figure that I am, simply just wanted to provide him with a swimming pool/jacuzzi combo so that his friends will think he is cool(cause he wouldn't be otherwise rolleyes ). I merely call the construction project "Secret Underground Test Facility" for fun. Really, nothing to be worried about. domokun

first off, thank you to everyone for your patience.

gaia avatar system 2.0 is online!

a few quick notes about the changes:

* when clicking on your profile link you will be directed not to your inventory, but to a static page so that you don't have to load your inventory every time you need to go to something else in your profile like your journal or friendslist.

* the profile page has changed slightly, now with two options. View My Inventory which will take you to a page with *all* your inventory, and Customize Me which will take you to what you normally see when you go to your profile. this is where you customize your avatar.

* when customizing your avatar, you now have the option of "posing" your avatar. there is a button just below the avatar preview where you can change your hand position. thes hand positions will come into play very soon... but, i'll let V0 tell you about that later on today.

for now, enjoy the new avatar system which should work alot better than the old system, but as with any new system, we are working out the slight bugs in the system for the first week or so.

ALL questions or problems about the new avatar system should be reported to the Questions & Feedback Subforum: Avatar 2.0 Q&F.

The new avatar system was going to be a one month long project, but because of the high number of possible combinations the new system provides, the project ended up taking almost three months to complete. crying The new system will not only allow possibilities for new types of items and comibnations, but will also introduce new features that will allow current avatars to be used with our upcoming games and features such as the Gaia housing project. 3nodding

Most of our time right now are focused on the Halloween event. I'm sure everyone will enjoy the events and items available next week. wink Gaia Fishing will be released shortly after Halloween.

Since the new avatar system touches so many aspects of Gaia, there are many different areas that we did not account for during testing. We are working hard on fixing all the existing bugs right now, starting with the new user registration problem. whee

One bug at a time, hopefully we can get the major problems fixed before we collaspe. sweatdrop
