The breeze drifted across the field and the tall grass bowed beneath it in a sweeping arc. It cleared the air bringing a fresh crisp feeling as the sun began to set casting the world in golden, red rays. By now the mess hall was filled with laughter and whispers, dinner was never a quiet affair in Amity. Wylie didn’t mind the noise but he needed solace. He knew he wouldn’t be missed, it was expected that some of them would be missing tonight before the choosing ceremony. The ceremony was a commencement of adulthood and it was honored by a huge feast. Many of the factions would wait until tomorrow to hold such a party, when they had their new initiates. However, defecting from Amity in favor of another faction was common practice with Amity born children—more so than any other faction. Tonight was the farewell meal because it was known that not all of them would return the following night. Wylie knew he wouldn’t. He had known before the test, he had known since he was a small child. He had always played too rough, ran too fast, and spoke his mind more than he should. His mother had called him their wild child, the one who played with the coyotes. It was an unspoken truth that he would leave them for Dauntless one day. His parents still loved him all the same, and he would miss them. Yet, they would be glad for him more than they were sad because that’s what Amity did to show kindness.

“But I should have said it.” Wylie spat out in frustration. He kicked at the dirt and the cows in the pasture mooed in retort. Even the cows in Amity were against violent gestures.

His parents were always accepting, they understood, and so it hadn’t needed to be discussed before. Yet, Elsey was in denial or perhaps she had never understood to begin with. It was always difficult to tell with her. They had been together—always. Twins were like that, or so they had been told. She was his shadow. Why hadn’t they discussed this before? He was going to Dauntless and she could never follow him there. Elsey was…what was Elsey? He hadn’t asked her about her test results. When they had walked home and he had beamed his pride at getting Dauntless she had looked horrified and cried. It was as if it hadn’t occurred to her until that moment that he may not be like her. He hadn’t even made plans for how to look after her once he was gone. How could he have done that?

Wylie huffed his frustration and threw himself upon the ground with the dying sunlight. He didn’t want to think of Elsey now. He wanted to think of Amity and the home he would be leaving behind. His hands dug into the soil and he relished the feeling of life it brought him. His eyes gazed to the sky and as the sun blinked out and the stars winked good evening flirtatiously. Longing filled his chest. Why couldn’t he be like them? Why couldn’t he be like the men and women who smiled so fondly and never fought? Why couldn’t he be the man that showed kindness to all? The man that could stay here. The man that could protect Elsey always.

He couldn’t be that man, because he wasn’t Amity. He was a strong man. He was a brave man. He was the man whose heart raced wild in a fight. He was the man who flirted with danger. He was the man that would be a soldier to the nation to protect not just Elsey but everyone. That wasn’t so bad…was it?

The heavy footfalls Wylie had overheard were now much closer. He propped himself up on his elbows to inspect the trespasser. Perhaps it was a fellow classmate trying to enjoy the last night in Amity. Instead he saw his father. His father was a tall man built with strength from years of farming. His skin was honey colored and his hair a fiery orange. They looked nothing alike. Elsey and Wylie had taken all their looks from their mother. “What gave me away?” Wylie called out.

“The cows.” His father chuckled. “The cows always talk more when you’re around.”

            “I guess I didn’t get Elsey’s gentle touch.”

“No that you didn’t.” His father scoffed with mirth.

Wylie smiled but it faded, “Did she go to dinner?”

“Wylie, son.” His father paused placing a heavy calloused hand on Wylie’s shoulder. “I believe that you are Amity. I see it in the kindness you show your sister. But you and I both know that in the end your heart belongs in Dauntless.” Wylie remained silent but looked at the ground. “You have to let Elsey go.” He said in a rather stern voice which was quite uncommon for him, “She will be cared for here in Amity or in the home of her new faction. While you love her you have to let her go…”

“Faction before blood.” Wylie mimicked with him. A stone fell in his stomach but he nodded his head in faux agreement.

“Yes. Now…come home for the night. The ceremony is early and I know you will need all the sleep you can get. Who knows what awaits you in Dauntless.”

Solemnly Wylie followed his father to their home. He had thought he was needed home so they could spend some time as a family. He had tried to speak with his mother and father by the hearth but both seemed to already be distancing themselves from him. So he retired early. He glanced at Elsey’s door which was closed (which was strange because she typically never shut it) and raised his hand to knock. Instead of rapping his knuckles on the wood his hand fell to his side and he went to his bed—his door wide open.

            ~*~*~*~

Wylie awoke to voices in the kitchen and sunlight streaming through his window. It was here. Today was his last day as Amity. He changed slowly etching the memory of the worn orange clothes into his mind. They felt safe but safe to Wiley was boring. He joined his family in the kitchen who were eating fruits and talking about tonight’s celebration to welcome the new initiates. His eyes flickered to Elsey who wore the dark orange clothes and he wondered if she would always wear orange. She spoke with a smile to her parents about the evening’s festivities yet he saw it didn’t reach her eyes. Not once did she look at him. Not once did he say something to her. It was going to be a long day.

            ~*~*~*~

To say the bus ride to the ceremony had been tense was an understatement. His family had been silent—which was a grave thing indeed for Amity. The only spark of life Elsey had shown was when an abnegation boy gave up his seat on the bus for her. She had given him a flirty smile and an endearing whispered thank you. The red of his face clashed with his gray clothes. Wyllie snorted and kicked the kid’s shoe “accidentally”. His mother had given him a warning glare but no verbal scolding.

His family continued their silent march to the ceremonial auditorium and took their seats among the throng of brightly clothed people. Amity was chatting happily with another their clamor bringing peace to the tense atmosphere. Wylie felt himself unwinding in their idle chit chat. His muscles relaxed and his mind felt at peace. The excitement for the ceremony was returning. His eyes glanced to the ceremonial bowls in anticipation and they lingered on the sizzling coals.

Elsey fidgeted in the seat next to him and his eyes turned towards her. She ducked her head quickly trying to hide behind her long loose hair. “Elsey…” Wylie whispered.

“It’s fine.” She countered quickly. Her voice was steady but her knuckles were turning white from clenching the arm rests.

“I…” Wylie trailed off annoyance burning his tongue, “I just wanted to ask where you’re going. We didn’t talk about your test-”

Wylie was cut off as the crowd hushed and Erudite’s leader took the stage. She spoke of becoming an adult, of choosing a faction. Together as a whole they repeated her, “Faction before blood.” He noticed that Elsey had remained silent.

            Then the names began.

As they got closer to his name he felt excitement and dread simultaneously. He was ready for Dauntless. He felt that longing. Yet he wasn’t ready to leave Elsey. He didn’t even know where she was going to go. Would she go to Erudite and become a teacher? Would she stay in Amity and tend to the herd? Would she choose abnegation and their grey clothes? He didn’t know.

“Wylie Thorn.” The announcer said cutting through his panicked thoughts. Without meaning to he squeezed Elsey’s hand but didn’t dare look at her. He couldn’t. He felt like he was stabbing her in the back even though really it was her eyes piercing into him. He stood stiffly and only released her hand at the last moment.

“Let her go.” He repeated to himself like a mantra as he took the stairs confidently.

He was handed a knife. He sliced his palm. His blood sizzled on the coals. Then the dauntless cheered and he turned to them a smile forming on his face for the first time all day. In a haze he shook a man’s hand and others patted him on the back. A seat was made for him and he felt at home.

“Elsey Thorn.” The announcer interrupted silencing the Dauntless.

His eyes immediately found her in the crowd. She rose and walked to the stairs. She was more graceful than he had been. Wylie leaned forward as she picked up the knife. “Who are you Elsey?”

            “Dauntless.” The announcer called.

Wylie’s mind spun and while the Dauntless cheered he heard his mother cry. He saw Elsey take a staggering step back and while she had made it to the Dauntless section on her own she looked only half conscious. Her expression of shock must have been identical to his. She slumped in her chair and looked at the now bandaged small cut as if it weren’t real. “What did you do?!” Wiley whispered all the horror dripping from his tone.

“I chose blood.” She whispered and this time it was final.

            ~*~*~*~

The ceremony concluded and the Dauntless rose up a chorus of howls and cheers. Instantly they were on their feet. Wiley pulled Elsey up along with him—he wasn’t entirely sure she was in her right mind. What had she done? Now wasn’t the time to think of that though. The Dauntless were moving. “Come.” He beckoned and he began to pull her with him in the throng of black clothing. When they reached the street the Dauntless ran.

Wiley found himself smiling despite the circumstances. No one was going to tell him to slow down. Elsey ran beside him, impressively keeping up, yet when they reached the pillars for the train tracks she was panting heavily. “You can do this.” Wiley whispered. “It’s just like a tree.” Yet he made her climb first—just in case.

“The train’s coming…” Elsey whispered as it approached. “They never stop.”

“Neither do we.” A boy chuckled elbowing Elsey in the ribs playfully. “Let’s go Amity girl.” He cheered as he ran along the tracks and leapt onto the train car.

Elsey had the nerve to blush. “Let’s go.” Wiley said rolling his eyes. He ran along the tracks and mimicked what the previous boy had done without thinking twice. It felt exhilarating. He turned back around and noticed Elsey had yet to board the train.

“I don’t think that Amity girl is going to make it.” Someone spoke behind him. His heart leapt to his throat and Wylie raced back to the door. Elsey was the last girl on the platform. She was running alongside the train but it was obvious she was tired—the run here had exhausted her. If she didn’t speed up now, she’d never make it.

“What happens if she doesn’t get on the train?” Wylie demanded frantic, but he already knew the answer.

“Then she’s not Dauntless.” One of the people chimed behind him.

Without further hesitation Wylie slipped his fingers around the handle of the door and swung his body out as far as it could. He was in real danger of slipping and dying. “But I won’t slip…” Wylie reassured himself. “If I do, I’ll die and Elsey will be factionless—alone.” Wylie’s eyes tore away from the ground and looked back at Elsey. “Faster Elsey!” He shouted, there was an edge of begging in his voice. “All you have to do is take my hand!”

She put her head down and it looked like she was trying to pick up speed. Someone shouted in the background, “The platform is ending!”

Wylie clutched the handle more securely, “NOW ELSEY!”

Elsey ran and his eyes furtively glanced towards the ending of the platform. She wasn’t going to make it. Oh god, she wasn’t going to make it. There was barely any platform left—but she was so close. “Wylie!” Elsey shouted, knowing too that the end was here.

“Don’t you dare give up!” He shouted back, his throat tightening.

The platform ended. Wylie’s breath caught. Elsey jumped.

Wylie just barely caught her wrist. The sudden wait on his one hand yanked his body down and out. His grip on the handle was gone. They were both going to tumble out of a moving train to their deaths. Of all the ways to die, Wylie wished it could have been anything but falling. Yet they didn’t fall. The other Dauntless had grabbed him. Together they pulled the twins back into the train car.

“You chose Dauntless and you can’t even keep up with the train?” Someone asked incredulously.

Elsey was shaking and out of breath but she managed to still be Elsey by flicking her hair over her shoulder and giving them a smile, “I just like to make an entrance.”
