1. Intro

In towns, you can find three kinds of items scattered around: papers, flowers and bugs.
On rare occasions, enchanted trunks and gift boxes could appear as well.
This guide will mainly focus on how to get the expensive trash more easily.

First of all, you have to select a location in towns from where you will start collecting trash. I would advise you to use a non-crowded area. That way, no one will already have taken away all the trash before you arrive.
[1] Crowded area [2] Non-crowded area

Just move a few sections to the right or left, up and down and then select a place where you will start. Always start on the right or the left side of a place. Because the easiest way to go hunt for trash is to move from the top of your screen, to the bottom. The middle section never has trash in it, so if you use the right or left path, you will never run out of trash.
[3] Right or left section [4] Middle section you should avoid

The next important thing you have to give attention, is the Gaia Standard Time.
The GST changes more rapidly than the time in real life. One hour in real time equals nearly 10 hours in GST.
This time is important, because trash will appear accordingly to the GST.

There are three times in GST:

User Image Sunrise
(Lasts about 15-20mins Real Time)
Time Start: 6:00 AM Towns Time
Time End: 8:00 AM Towns Time

User Image Day
(Lasts about 50-55mins Real Time)
Time Start: 8:00 AM Towns Time
Time End: 6:00 PM Towns Time

User Image Sunset
(Lasts about 15-20mins Real Time)
Time Start: 6:00 PM Towns Time
Time End: 8:00 PM Towns Time

User Image Night
(Lasts about 50-55mins Real Time)
Time Start: 8:00 PM Towns Time
Time End: 6:00 AM Towns Time

1 Minute Real Time = 10.3 Minutes Towns Time

The best time, with the most valuable trash is Dawn-time User Image
The time with the least valuable trash is Day-time User Image

If you go trash collecting for a long time, you might notice that at a certain point the most valuable trash will start appearing a lot less than when you started. Same counts for bugs. Bugs might even disappear at some point. If you notice this, it is best for you to start using a mule (second account) to collect more valuable trash. So the best thing to do, is not to stick around during day-time that much, but more during dawn and night.

One way to profit from collecting trash is by selling it in the Gaia Marketplace. Once you have bought a trading pass, you can sell items in your very own shop. Trash items can be found under the 'game' tab. Note that when you sell trash, you can set an amount of trash you want to sell. Be careful that you change the price accordingly. E.g. if you want to sell 50 papers for 2 gold each, the buy price should be 100 gold (50 x 2) and not 2g.

5. Alchemy

User Image

Papers and flowers are very much wanted for people who like to do Alchemy. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
The most valuable papers and/or flowers are key ingredients to crafting an Alchemist's case User Image
This case gives you a formula for Alchemy that you can't buy in shops.

That is why certain trash is worth quite a bit in the marketplace. If you know how to find these small components in an efficient and quick way, you could earn a lot of gold by selling them.

Edit: This used to be profitable up to a certain point in Gaia history when they started selling philosopher's caches in shops for 50k. Don't waste your trash on crafting a philosopher's cache!

Also check this very good guide to alchemy should you be interested.
An other handy thread is the Cache bag guide

6. Paper/flower exchange

User Image

Although I would not advise you to do this, as you will not gain any profit from it, there is a possibility to exchange your trash in Ruby's Rack for items.

Here is a site with the whole list of items you can exchange trash for.

The flowers can be exchanged in The Buttercup Cafe.
There is no reason you should ever do this, because there are tons of combinations of flowers and bouquets and ribbons, that the chance someone would ever buy your bouquet is very small.

7. Hints and tips

Trash hidden behind trees.

User Image

You will notice that sometimes, when you hover over a tree, your mouse pointer will become a hand, just like it would on the trash on the ground. This means that there is 'hidden' trash behind the trees. It's always worth checking this out because often there is a lot behind it at once.

If the town you are in has a fully visible tree (where the top is not cut-off) in the top right corner, there will ALWAYS 99.99% guarantee be trash behind it.

Blue bugs

Blue bugs are the 'hardest' ones to find, except for the rare ones. Blue bugs come out at night User Image way more often than any other time of the day.

Quickest way to move through the trash

During dawn, you only have a couple of minutes to get as much of the valuable trash as possible. To me, the easiest way to do this is
1. Start at the top, in the middle
2. Move to the right, in the middle
3. Move to the left, at the bottom
4. Go to the arrow at the bottom

And repeat.

There will never be trash at the right bottom of the town, so no need to explore that part.

Only take the valuable trash when you have a stash of regular trash (when doing alchemy)

Kinda obvious, you waste less time collecting the things you don't need any way.

Use a mule to go trash collecting

The major benefit is that you have no friends that want to 'stalk' you in towns.
That way you don't get bothered when collecting, and you don't have to be a meany butt saying: I don't have time for you, I'm collecting trash. rolleyes

You can also turn off the possibility for people to see your online status and you'll get rid of the stalkers too.

SAVING TRASH IS NOT REQUIRED!

You can perfectly go collect trash, move through lots of towns, without needing to press the red bag in the bottom right corner and select "yes" when it asks if you want to save your trash.

Combine trash collecting with fishing

The smaller fish in Bassken Lake are also worth a bunch, because of alchemy. You can both fish and collect trash in towns at the same time! All you need is a little practice.

Do things in this order:
1. Cast your rod
2. Click your towns window so it becomes the 'active window'
3. Move your mouse back to the fishing game and leave it there until a fish appears.
4. In the meanwhile, you can use your directional buttons to move your avatar in towns, to move towards the heaps of trash / the valuable trash.
5. When a fish appears, just put all your focus on catching it.

It's not as hard as it may seem! And you don't lose time casting a rod when no fish wants to take your bait.

User Image

For catching as much of the fish needed for alchemy, I advise you to use the performance rod plus, and a D bait.
A bait has as much small fish as D bait, just less trash.
Trash on the other hand, is easy to recognize, and so you can filter away the trash by letting it go, and getting a nice bucket filled with the small fish you need for alchemy.

Don't forget to check out this awesome fishing guide.
