About CAG:
So about a year or so ago I decided to get into art commissions and since then I've ordered from quite a few artists. However, to this day it still amazes me how some artist (albeit VERY good) can sell art pieces in commission auctions for several millions. If you've got that kind of money to piss away then be my guest, but I decided to open the "Cheap Arts Guide" so that people who don't have a handy 87290856mil gold to spend can still get some pretty decent commissions.

For every entry in the Cheap Arts Guide, they are awarded the CAG Approval Stamp:

It is the artist's choice whether or not to display the stamp in their store. Many thanks to [Hyde] and his infinite awesomeness for making this stamp for me! User Image

13.12.08 - Partially open for the time being, I need to hunt for more artists.

15.02.09 - Oh update time! I'm soooo sorry everyone, I've kind of abandoned the guide here. I'm on my summer holidays at the moment so I'm out/busy pretty often. Honestly though I think the only times I'm really super active is during event periods, so Christmas, Halloween, and etc. Anyway, I'll try and do some updating now and tomorrow if I can. Once again, thanks to everyone who's been keeping the guide alive while I've been away/lazy. heart OHH, and new staff member: Tha Valkyrie Ryu!

Indeed, I do actually have a life outside of the computer. I'm a full-time university student with long days and a lot of studying/work (plus actual $$-work), and coming on here to do tedious research and typing is something I don't have the patience for at the end of the day; it isn't a big priority.
I'll also be going on my clinical placement away from home for virtually all of May, so internet access might be limited for me.

The only times I'm really alive on Gaia is during event seasons (so Halloween, Christmas, Anniversaries, etc.) and my own vacation periods; these are the time when when I'll most likely re-open and update the guide.

I hope I'll be able to work on this project of mine in the future. Although I might do little updates from time to time, for now this thread is closed. sad

A quick guide to understanding the listings.

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Anything particularly good or bad about the artist/store (eg. fast worker, inconsistent drawings, etc), plus any additional comments.

In some of the listings there is a "HEY BIG SPENDER" tag attached. These are given to particular commissions which are good quality, but also have a higher price tag attached to it.

Anything added personally by an artist to their own entry is displayed in the comments section under "Artist's Comments".

Recommended Buy(s): Everything is very fairly priced; I'd go with a Full Body Chibi for 3k, or a Usual Full Body for 6.5k. Feeling adventurous? Why not try the Sexy Pin-Up style (prices are the same as the regular avatar style).

Recommended Buy(s):
AuraJitstu: It's only 7k for a single full body and Full Body Couples are just 12k. Aura also has samples listed through her Photobucket slideshow.
Osmet: Osmet offers Headshots, Busts, and Flobs; I'd go with a Colour Bust shot for 3k, but the headshots are also pretty (1.5k). He also offers a lineless style, but I prefer the regular one. You can also look at his slideshow if you're interested.
Samples: AuraJitsu: Bust (3k) || Waist (4k) || Full Body (Couple - 12k) || HEY BIG SPENDER - Realistic Portrait (20k)

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: I feel like both artists have a similar flowing drawing style which I quite like. At with almost 500 pages worth of orders I'd say this is a great place to go to for art.

The Owl's Eye Art Shop
Username/Name of Artist: blue-owl
Recommended Buy(s): Unlike most stores the price varies according to colouring style only (ie. a full-body sketch costs as much as a bust sketch). I would recommend the Full Body Sketch, it's only 1k and very pretty; or go for a Coloured Full Body at only 5k. Also try out the regular art auctions which offer a CGed piece of art.

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Regardless of what you decide to order it's guaranteed to turn out brilliantly. He's a fast worker too so there's not much of a wait for your art, and if you're interested he does an in-store CG art and profile auction about every month.

Wonderland Cafe~
Username/Name of Artist: bosing, KuraiNeko, Night Rain Mitsuki
Recommended Buy(s): All artists are recommended.
bosing: All of bosing's art is done in a detailed ink outline. Regardless of whether you're after a bust or a full body, the price is set at 2k.
KuraiNeko: I would probably pick either a Chibi/Knee Up or Full Body avatar, both with Anime/Cell Shading (11k or 13k). A little more on the pricier side, but well worth the money.
Night Rain Mitsuki: All commissions are available in pencil or pen outline, or colour. I'd probably stick with the Half Body commissions (9k, 10k, 11k). Or, if you've got more to spend, try a Full Body (13k, 14k, 16k).

Each artist does wonderfully detailed avatar arts, whether it's sketched, outlined or coloured. Please get a commission from one of these guys, sure to not disappoint! Wonderland Cafe is currently also the only double entry art store in both the avatar and non-avatar art section.

Specialty: She does do regular avatar commissions, but Chibis are a bestseller.
Recommended Buy(s): Everything is reasonably priced, the most you'll pay is 7k for a Waist Shot (no samples at the moment), or 1.5k for a Chibi. And there's no extra cost for colour!
Samples: Chibi style (1.5k) || Rushed chibi (500g) || Regular - Head shot (3k) || Regular - Bust (5k)
Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Cute chibis, and her regular commissions are also beautifully done.

Toasted Octopus
Username/Name of Artist: Firies, michellehail
Specialty: Not really a specialty store, but both artists do chibis; michelle also draws regular style avatars (full bodies only).
Recommended Buy(s): Well there's only 3 commissions available in total from both artists (chibis from either, or the additional regular style from michelle), and it's all very affordable. I personally prefer michelle's chibi style (at 1.5k a piece), but Firies' chibi's are still very nice (at 5k a piece for the "Traditional" style). Alternatively, why not give michelle's Normal avatar style a try for just 4k?

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Both artists use traditional media (ie. colour pencil) so it's up to you to decide whether that's a good or a bad thing (personally I'm pretty indifferent). I must admit I don't find the full body avatars thaaaaaaaaat great, but they're still pretty decent. And you know, 4k for a coloured full body? Go nuts.

Recommended Buy(s): 4 styles are available, I would personally go with either Style 2 or 3, but anything is good. A Full Body Coloured Avatar ranges between 3k to 10k depending on the Style Type.

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: FallingAngel54 (Customer recommendation): "I got the most WONDERFUL artwork from this artist at one of the lowest prices I've bought. I'm a collector of gaia avi art and hers is amazing!" And you know what, I agree with her. The art really is fantastic; very finely detailed CG art. I have to say this is probably one of the best artists I've come across. Guaranteed not to disappoint!

Specialty: Chibi avatars, but regular avatar commissions are also available (only through bribe)
Recommended Buy(s): I'm all for the Classic Chibi Style, either with a Rainbow Gradient Sketch (1k), or Fully Coloured (1.5k), and it's only another 100g per extra person.
Samples: Classic Chibi Rainbow Sketch (1k) || Classic Chibi Rainbow Sketch (1k) || Classic Coloured Chibi (1.5k) || Classic Coloured Chibi (1.5k) || Simple Chibi (Sketch, 450g/Coloured, 500g)
Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Very cute, and very well done CG Chibis, honestly I expected her commissions to cost craploads, but 1.5k for a chibi of this quality is very reasonable. I think due to the awesome art and low price, slots fill up fast so get your order in as soon as you can!

Recommended Buy(s): I'd probably go for the chibi avatar for 8k; a normal waist shot avatar for 12k is getting towards the steeper side [either that or I'm just cheap ^^;;] but still worth looking into. All commissions are in colour unless you specify for line art.
Samples: Chibi (8k) || Chibi (8k) || HEY BIG SPENDER - Waist shot (12k)
Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: I think 8k is more around your average price rather than your super cheap price, but still affordable in my opinion. There's only 1 sample for the Waist shot at the moment; honestly I find it hard to tell the difference between the waist and a chibi. But still, like I said it's worth looking into.

Specialty: Chibi avatar, animated or non-animated.
Recommended Buy(s): Anything is good really, the most you'll pay is for a single commission 2k for an Animated Full Body Chibi (5k for couples), or just 500g for a non-animated version (3k for couples).
Samples: Non-Animated Chibi (500g) || Animated Chibi (2k) || Animated Chibi (Couple - 5k)
Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Consistently cute and simple chibis; with 400+ pages she must be doing something right.

Username/Name of Artist: Jodie The Pooh, Mizusagi, Tiaroi
Recommended Buy(s):
Jodie The Pooh: The chibi style is very cute at only 800g, or go for a regular Full Body avatar at just 1.2k.
Tiaroi: Tiaroi has the standard avatar styles, I'd probably go with the 3/4 style for 3k, just pay a little extra and get a Full Body for 3.5k.
Mizusagi: Her main style is chibis, but also does some normal avatars too. It's 1k for either a Full Body Chibi, or a Waist-Up Avatar. Mizusugi doesn't have many samples at the moment.
Samples: Jodie The Pooh: Full Body (1.2k per avatar) || Chibi (800g) || Headshot (500g)

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: You know, even though they're mainly using MSPaint as their medium, they've got to be pretty good at what they do to still make avatar art look good; I very much like the colouring style (it's a bit like water colours), it reminds me a little of the Roald Dahl book illustrations by Quentin Blake. Mizusugi's samples are in pencil but if you order from her it'll still be done on computer.

Recommended Buy(s): The Full Body Chibi is a great buy for 1k, or upgrade to the CG Colour for an extra 1k, it comes with a background! Or alternatively you can just upgrade to Colour Pencil for 200g. The colour prices apply to all commissions.

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Quite nice chibis here, or even give her regular style a try! There's always open slots and not much traffic so getting an order in shouldn't be too much trouble. Just remember to pick up your art from her shop!

Username/Name of Artist: MissShiori
Specialty: Specialises in face portraits, ie. Head shots.
Recommended Buy(s): Realism Coloured Portrait, nicely shaded and detailed. If you wanna be cheap and say 2.5k is steep for just head shot, these are very good head shots. Alternatively it's 1k for the Sepia portrait, or 1.9k for the Chibi Coloured portrait.

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: The store is VERY new (therefore lack of samples for the moment), but from the samples she's a great artist and she knows what she's doing.

MOO! Avi Art Shop
Username/Name of Artist: Moke Moo Moo
Recommended Buy(s): I'd say that everything here is pretty cheap (especially for CG-style art, although it's a bit steeper for couple commissions). Chibis go at 5k a piece, the most you'll pay for a solo commission is 15k for a Full Body, or just settle on the Waist shot for 6k.

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: The first thing I thought when I looked at this store was "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH PRETTY." You know, for CG art at this fantastic quality I really expected it to cost a lot more. Seriously, get an order in if you can 'coz this is some great stuff. I especially love the chibis... so damn cute... Artist's Comment: Oh, you might want to add that slots fill up VERY fast, so it can be difficult to get one.

Crystal_Archer: It's 3.5k for a Coloured Full Body Chibi (or 2.5k for a sketch). Coloured Regular Full Body Avatars are more around the cheaper-standard price of 10k.
hpanna47t: The chibis are at a set price of 1.5k; hpanna also offers regular avatar commissions - for a Full Body Avatar the price differs between 1k, 2.5k, and 3k depending on the style.

Recommended Buy(s): Princess of Nobody draws both chibis and regular avatars, but her overall pricing is very affordable. I'd go with a Full Body Coloured Chibi for 1.6k, or a Normal Style Coloured Full Body Avatar for 2k.
Samples: Full Body Coloured Chibi (1.6k) || Normal Coloured Full Body Avatar (2k) || Normal Coloured Full Body Avatar (2k)
Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: It's hard to judge with a lack of samples (the ones I've included are the only ones there at the moment), but by looking at what's available she's pretty consistent with her drawings and I like her style.

Psycho Sako's Cheap Avatar Portraits!
Username/Name of Artist: PsychoSako
Specialty: Avatar portraits (ie. Heat/Bust shots), although there are a few waist/full bodies floating around I think.
Recommended Buy(s): Highly detailed CG portraits for just 1k.
Samples: Portrait (1k) || Portrait (1k) || Portrait (couple - 1k)
Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Seriously, this is ridiculously awesome art. If you don't s**t your pants just a little bit just looking at the samples I suggest you take that cork out of your a**. Moving on, the artist has also pointed out that the thread moves pretty fast, so you should hang around in the thread to avoid your order getting lost in the pages. And due to the popularity it seems to be somewhat difficult to get an order in. Artist Comment: "You might want to mention that because i have a life, it's not all that often that i start a queue, but when i do, slots go fast. :3"

Recommended Buy(s):A Coloured Full Body Avatar costs about 6k or 8k depending on how complicated your avi is (for non-coloured it costs 1k less). Coloured Chibis are also a cute buy at 3k. mangabent also offers a unique comic strip commission, so you can create your own little comic strip with your avatar - prices are dependent on number of boxes, box size, colouring, etc. Check out the store for more details.

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Pricing - cheap. Quality - awesome. The drawings are very well done, and I love the regular avatars and the chibis equally - it's impossible for me to choose between them! One of the best I have to say; definitely another new favourite. And due to the larger waiting list (15 slots) it might be easier to get an order in than some other places!

Username/Name of Artist: TV HERO, Tele The Fruity VayJay
Recommended Buy(s): TV HERO has 2 styles offered, regular avatar or chibi. I'd go with the Normal anime style avatars go for 4k (if you want a sketch it's 3k), but chibi avatars go for just 1k (or 500g for a sketch). Tele does not have any samples up at the moment.
Samples: Normal/Anime Avatar style (4k) || Normal/Anime Avatar style (with background - 4k) || Normal/Anime Avatar style (sketch - 3k) || No chibi samples yet!
Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Coloured pencils are used for regular avatars so it's up to you to decide whether you like that or not; overall the style is a bit sketchy but I personally kinda like that. Chibi's are done on computer, however there aren't any samples yet for the time being. The store is very new and slots are still empty (I think) at the moment, so give these guys some work to do!

Skynn Deep
Username/Name of Artist: wolfgirl_chaewon
Recommended Buy(s): Inked and Coloured Full-Body avatar, it's very rare to get any full-body commission for just 14k, let alone coloured. For couples it's just 17k.

Benefits, Shortcomings & Other Comments: Fantastic drawings regardless of what you decide on, but her commission list is constantly full. She doesn't work in any particular order either, and due to the large waiting list you can be waiting for months until your order is complete (she took 3 months for mine). But I have to say she is DEFINITELY worth the wait.

About the Store: A little store selling adult-style items - candles, love potion bottles... condoms... I know you giggled in your mind there, because I did. Items range from around 100g - 350g depending on what you want.

Other Comments: The store seems a bit new so I think there's still some items waiting to be released. I'm still amused by the condoms.

About the Store: Customizable mochis! You can select the mochi flavour, various toppings, and facial expressions. Price range is 200g - 500g. Adoradolls (adorable pixel dolls) are also available, but only through bribe/regular store auctions.
Samples: Flavour selections || Topping selections || Facial expressions || SunsetFlare's "watermarked" mochi order || Adoradoll
Other Comments: The limited variety of other items is compensated by the very cute mochis that she makes, and that she's a ridiculously fast worker (if you catch her online!) I would like to see more from her, but the mochis are a great buy for now. Don't forget about her Adoradolls!

A Psycho Circus
Username/Name of Artist: frenzyotaku, tandemonium
Specialty: Creepy-themed food and pets.
About the Store: Rock candy, a bowl of slime, a pet toad in a wooden cage... psycho circus indeedy. Estimated price range is 300g - 4750g.

About the Store: Probably the best food store around - cakes, salad, onigiri, chocolates... estimated price range is 25g - 500g, with the exception of 1 item which is 5k.

Other Comments: Seriously, with a massive staff of 9 there's a LOT to choose from in this store. I don't know what else to say about it, other than it is a big pile of awesome. Pink Sugar also has their own award system given to other exceptional food art stores.

Specialty: A little bit of food, but their specialty is drinks (namely tea - of course!)
About the Store: A wide range of drinks and little snacks can be found here, as well as a customizable drink (bamboo spoon and chocolate sauce!) Estimated price range is about 50g - 500g depending on what you order, with a single item in the "Gift Shop" area for 800g.

Specialty: A cafe-themed store with a very large variety of pixel foods, gifts, avatar edits, as well as avatar art. Note: this entry covers only the non-avatar art aspects.
About the Store: The store has a very extensive range: decorative sweets and drinks, hookahs, hamster dolls, elaborate avatar edits... estimated price range is 50g to 1k.

Other Comments: Quantity doesn't not necessarily mean quality, but Wonderland Cafe definitely presents excellent quality in all items available for sale. Currently standing as the only double entry art store in both the avatar and non-avatar art section, this is definitely a one-stop shop for your art purchases.

Other Comments: Impressive stuff, no? I don't know... in my opinion it takes a lot of skill and creativity to compose anything, whether it's classical or alternative.

Other Comments: I guess if you wanna be cheap you could argue that 1.5k is along the steeper side of food, but I have to say these are pretty impressive cakes and are definitely worth the money; if you're not interested in the cakes it's not hard to pick up something else in store that will tickle your fancy. I guess the only gripe I have is the slightly smaller food menu.
