Yes and for some it may be a bitter decision, but it has to be respected, despites the reasons behind it.
Also, as I said before, I do really appreciate the fact bluealaris took time to address the matter, even if I have the feeling things have been sugarcoated for us.
BucketHead1693
Well, signs of the decline of the site were already around since a lot, there's no denying that, but who wouldn't be tired after that many years (especially counting the too many complaints for it not being updatedlikeeveryonewanted, etc)? People are never happy: I probabily would be bitter too.
Besides the fact that also Gaia used to advertise TekTek for contests and such in some cases as it was fine for them back then: I believe there's some slight hypocrisy here. This move should have been done ages ago and the letter should have been kept away from the community, but I still think we don't have any right to judge anyone.

Think of it this way - you make a drawing and post it on Deviant Art. Someone makes a meme out of it and gives you credit. It goes viral, people learn about you and they start following your DA page. But then someone goes and takes your drawing and makes key chains and mugs and sells them on etsy. They are profiting off your work and you are getting no benefits for them doing so. You'd be pretty upset and want to take legal action to stop it, wouldn't you?

Well, Tekton has never been on his own with TekTek. He's had plenty of volunteers helping him along the way who have tried their hardest to keep improving the site. Honestly, if he was done with TekTek, he could have easily passed it off to someone who truly cared for the site but he didn't because let's face it, it was free advertising on a massive scale for recolor.me. It's apparent he's not too happy over losing that benefit. The problem is with the volunteers is that when they had to continually wait for Tekton's help to fix things or get approval for stuff, they would be stuck between a rock and a hard place. It would not surprise me if the amount of volunteers began dwindling due to them knowing Tekton just hasn't cared. It's rather demotivating when keeping something you're passionate about alive. :c

The thing is, as many others have said, more than likely Gaia has been pushing to get this C&D for a while. Legal steps like this take a while to put in place and cannot just be rushed to get filed since it can lead to problems for both parties involved. More than likely they've been trying to take these steps since the beginning of last year when Recolor.me was released and/or they've tried to contact Tekton prior to this only for him to ignore them.

Again, I personally do not care if TekTek remains up or not. I do not care if Tekton decides to just give up, since that's his decision and I ultimately respect it regardless of what else he could have done a long time ago. What I do care about is how immature he is acting about this situation now by posting up the letters and essentially flipping a table all at once after having the letter for two weeks already. Gaia has been nothing but fair to Tekton for a very long time. It just seems extremely tasteless on his part to be doing this because he's well aware what type of response it'd invoke out of the community. :/

honestly just smh at all the people bashing tektek as a site/free service in this thread
tektek provided service(s) that gaia wasn't able to give to their users
(dream avatar, inventory tektek, calculating account worth, etc etc.)
some of these services are still not provided on gaia.
There was a demand for it, so someone went through the effort of building tektek.

Even if it hasn't been up to date, all this hard work was provided for free, and for YEARS.
If you're not helping to pay for server costs, then what right do you have to complain?
    you are essentially a freerider.
If you used it, and it was faulty, sure you can make suggestions
but no one is obligated to take your suggestions...?
just wow the sense of entitlement in some of the posts in this thread

Biggest complaints I've read is that it went down a lot and wasn't up to date.
I can't really speak on server issues bc idk what happened personally
but tektek =/= gaia. People aren't being paid to keep tektek updated.

I'm not saying that posting the C&D letter was classy.
And I'm definitely not taking a 'side'
(whether it be Gaia or Tektek, personally I think gaia was well in their rights)

But can't you criticize Tekton's behavior without bashing his creation
and all the volunteer hours put in (by various people) for years to keep it running?

How can we make suggestions when Tekton went out of his way to avoid Gaia as much as possible and even his STAFF of volunteers had a hard time getting up with him during several of the server crashes Tektek has experienced over the last year. Which I might add rarely happened prior to the release of his own avatar site.

Again that smells worse than Wednesday night's dried blood and food laden garbage and that was nasty. It's a little too convenient by my thinking. He was ready to ditch anything Gaia the moment he put up that ad looking for artists.

honestly as an independent adult (which I assume Tekton is now also)
I have to reiterate that no one is paying him to do this.
Recolor is probably a full time job (he's official staff there)
Tektek is an unpaid side project.
Gaia said that tektek is unofficial.
If Tekton owns the website and its not gaia official and no one is paying him to run it...
he's not obligated to take ANYONES suggestions, or stay in contact.
I mean in my POV the only one he owes anything to is people that help pay server fees.

And honestly server crashes happen. Its a pain to restore/backup things.
I'm not surprised that he was too busy with a real job to maintain a free pet project.
Especially with all the gratitude that he gets.

I kinda admire how his FREE TO USE pet project from 10 years ago is currently still alive.
I would have abandoned it long ago.

I agree.

He threw Gaia under the bus to make himself look innocent and godly. I mean if he wasn't try to rile up the masses he would be on Gaia trying to prevent it from happening.

But no, his last post on Gaia was almost a year ago.

It may have been a free service and an unpaid side project, but it was something he was profiting off of and using it to boost membership to the avatar site he created as well as funded by the ads placed on Tektek.

Yes, the ads were a bad move and they bugged me (quite any ad bugs me... cat_xp ), but I ignored them so much, I learned about Tekton' site from the Gaia forums...quite ironic!
I really hope they did started before with the notices, but we have no way to know and I'm not in the position to trust Gaia again right now, so I prefere to keep my mouth shut.

I do not care aswell, and I do think his behaviour might be questionable but there are surely reasons behind it, as there are behind Gaia's decisions.
What irks me, is that most people are being very rude towards both parts and know very little on the matter. The dreamavatar site was not updated, the site was slow...? Yes, obviously. It was free, and I would say to those complaining: go, make your own if you are tired and can do any better. And for the ones witch-hunting on Gaia: something had to be done for those ads.

How does that entitle Gaians to updates?
Lots of software and code snippets are provided 'as is, without any warranty or promise of future updates'
And people buy/use them, and the creators profit off of them.

Even if he was profiting off ad revenue (where is the proof btw? server costs, ad revenue reciepts?)
That doesn't mean he HAS to stay in contact/update Tektek.
He could lose this revenue if the site stays stagnant, but he can choose not to update if he doesn't wish to?
I just don't see the obligation.

I do agree that the Recolor ads were a conflict of interest though
(my first post says I'm leaning towards Gaia being in the right)
But recolor ads have nothing to do with keeping tektek updated

Yep proof that he was totally not coming back to Gaia and proof that he's just doing all this to give Gaia a huge middle finger and steal people away from Gaia. I had heard rumor (again this is rumor) that he was going to keep recolor.me up until the money ran out. I think the money was close to being gone and now he sees the perfect opportunity to weasel money out of people to keep the site running. This is just in plain old poor taste.

Gaia just needs to create their own 'dream avatar' section. I stopped using Tektek so long ago

I never said it did, but he should at least keep his volunteer staff updated. Which he didn't.

Then people have no reason to get upset if the site gets shut down, be it because Tekton let the servers rot or if Gaia requests the site get shut down if they don't comply with their request.

I've heard the same rumor and apparently something about it only lasting another month or two within the most recent staff/site update on Recolor.me.
