Ready and gather all our strength
The night has come of soaring reigns
For the honor, have no fear
The night has come of soaring reigns
For the honor, have no fear
Ristar was most certainly right about one thing. What was done was done, that was for sure. There had been things that were said, feelings that were hurt, and cuts that had been made that would take far too long to heal. Some of them perhaps too raw to ever fully close. It was a thought that tore him up inside and something that he desperately tried to avoid thinking about. Even as her dark gaze met his own, Caine could feel himself crumbling beneath the weight of it all. What he wanted, more than anything in this world, was for Ristar to let him be the one to shoulder the burden of their lives. To be the strength that she drew on and for once, just once, let herself not have to be the strong one. It was something that he knew would be asking too much from her, especially right now, so he kept his tongue still. For now. All he could hope was that there would one day come a time when he could ask just that of the fiery woman.
Her simple sentence did more to his emotions than he had been expecting, the beast of a man realizing that he had messed up once more. He was not trying to lock her out of helping him fix things, rather he had no idea what he was even going to do. A soft sigh pulled from his lips as he shook his head, watching her quietly for a moment. ”That’s not what I meant, I just…” Damnit, was there going to be any point tonight that he wasn’t putting his foot so deep into his mouth he was choking on it? Highly doubting it, Caine sighed and ran a hand through his hair as he tried to gather his thoughts. Before he had the chance to do so, however, Ristar was mentioning checking on their son and walking away. While a large part of him knew that he should give the woman a chance to walk away and get her head on straight, there was something in him screaming to stop her.
Caine knew his love well enough to know that she was on the verge of shutting down on him, if she hadn’t already. This was new territory for the both of them and it scared him senseless. He could handle the fiery temper that fueled his love, that was something that he had experience with. Ristar shutting down completely and not putting up a fight, however, was foreign and uncharted lands. He did not know what to do to make it stop but he knew he had to figure something out and quick. Not letting his mind dwell on the ‘how’ for too long, Caine quickly turned on his heel and stalked after the redhead. Oh, how he wished he had his brunette friend around at the moment to give him advice on how to handle the situation. His petite partner was beyond skilled in shutting down and Austin always proved knowledgeable on how to navigate the situation. There had to be some sort of rulebook that the man kept hidden when it came to handling the Whelan sisters.
All he knew at that moment was that he couldn’t let her go back to the house. Not yet. A fear that he could not quite put his finger on told him that if she got behind closed doors he would lose her. Catching up quickly, Caine reached out and grabbed Ristar’s wrist to still her movements. He was careful to not hold her too tightly but made sure he was firm enough to keep her from getting further away from him. ”Ragnor is fine, Ristar. We are not.” It killed him to say the words, to admit it to the universe, but they both knew that he was right. Steeling himself in his decision the man moved to stand in front of her, his hold staying on her wrist as he did. In front of the woman once more he reached out with his free hand and grabbed her own, squeezing it gently.
”Please, Ri, I am just asking that you stay out here with me a little longer. We both know that you will be the first to know if something is wrong with Ragnor. Do not walk away from me. Not now. My mother always told me that going to bed upset was putting a dagger in the heart of a relationship. We might have said our apologies and uttered our forgiveness, but I am not stupid enough to think that things are okay. Talk to me, Ri. Tell me how you are feeling. Not just about Lyla and Ragnor, but about everything. You have been through hell and back today in more ways than just one. I wasn’t listening earlier, and I hate myself for it, but I am listening now. You asked me to open up to you and now I am asking for the same thing from you.” Releasing his hold on her wrist he lifted his hand to brush some of her curls from her gorgeous features. Even when she was upset and locking him out, Ristar was the most enchanting creature that he had ever had the pleasure of laying his eyes on.
His mind was reeling as he watched her and his heart was pounding at a near deafening rate. Every part of him was screaming that he was making another mistake, that he was pushing her too far. Ristar had made it abundantly clear to him that she did not appreciate being made to do anything she didn’t want to. By getting in her space and refusing to let her leave he was doing just that. Caine knew that he was taking a big risk and leap of faith by stopping her; especially when he could not exactly explain his reasoning behind the decision. All he knew was that the woman he loved more than anything was on the verge of locking him out and he could not risk that. They had worked so hard over the last year to tear down the walls that she had built around her heart and to make her feel safe. The idea of undoing all of that work, all of her growth, in the course of one evening was shattering his heart.
All he needed was for her to trust him, if only for a moment. To give them a chance to truly heal and get everything off of her chest. Once that happened then they could move on. He could scoop her into his arms and carry her back to the safety of their home. Caine would be more than happy to simply hold her for the rest of the evening and keep her hidden away from the world. He would fight away any demon that tried haunting her dreams and keep her safe from everything that tried to cause her harm. For once, Caine would save her instead of leaving her to save herself. She just needed to be willing to open the door, even just a little bit. ”Please, eldurinn minn. I know that I do not deserve you to let me back in and that I am asking for a lot from you. But I am asking. Let go, for once. It’s just you and I. Let yourself be vulnerable, I promise that I will catch you.” With his case plead and out in the open, Caine fell silent. His gray eyes clouded with the storms that raged inside of him, swirling to life with each passing second. His breath held like a rock in his lungs, waiting until she spoke before he could allow himself to breathe again. More than he cared to admit held in the balance of her next set of decisions.

We shall withstand this night of war
Ready and gather all our strength
The night has come of soaring reigns
Ready and gather all our strength
The night has come of soaring reigns
